Thirty years ago, Common looked back ruefully at his favorite genre in “I Used to Love H.E.R.,” his classic riff on hip-hop as a wayward ex-girlfriend. “She was really the realest before she got into showbiz,” he lamented. The couple patched things up after that, and Common grew from a prematurely scolding young man to a genial elder statesman, upholding what he sees as rap’s traditional values with a smile and a serious commitment to his craft. It’s been a happy marriage, for the most part.

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

June is busting out all over, especially on streaming. Whether it’s hiding from the heat or taking a break from school and work, Disney+ and Hulu are here to satisfying your mid-year entertainment needs.
Disney+ will premiere the first new live-action Star Wars since 2023’s middling to “The Mandalorian” Season 3 and “Ahsoka” with “The Acolyte,” starring “Squid Game” breakout Lee Jung-jae. The series is set before the events of “The Phantom Menace” with a familiar master-padawan storyline but new characters and a new era where that dynamic unfolds. The streamer will also premiere various new options for kids and family-friendly programming, as well as new episodes of “Doctor Who” starring Ncuti Gatwa.
On Hulu, FX comes in hot for the summer, along with an adaptation of Candice Carty-Williams’s “Queenie,” the brat-pack documentary “Brats,” and yes — more “Love Island.” The TV and film library continues to shift with new and expiring titles,...

Today, The Rolling Stones‘ debut album turned 60. Hats off to Mick Jagger and company for staying together this long against all odds! Here’s a look at their debut album’s triumphs and tragedies.
13. ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You’
The lively rhythm here is ruined by some questionable lyrics. In this song, Jagger compares himself to an enslaved person. It’s tasteless, but what would you expect from the same band that would later give us such racist atrocities as “Brown Sugar” and “Some Girls?” At least this song didn’t hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 like “Brown Sugar” did.
12. ‘You Can Make It If You Try’
Placed near the end of the album, “You Can Make It If You Try” is a self-empowerment song that feels tedious and endless. The Rolling Stones made it. They tried. This song didn’t help them get there.

The Rolling Stones’ No Filter tour continues.
Announced in 2017, the legendary rock band is preparing to return to the stages after taking a break for over two years. The last tour date they performed was November 23, 2021, in Hollywood, Florida.
The tour has faced quite a bit of setbacks. In March 2019, frontman Mick Jagger had to undergo a heart operation, postponing that year’s North American leg of the tour. Then in 2020, much like the rest of the world, the Covid-19 pandemic forced another North American leg postponement. The following year, drummer Charlie Watts had to sit out the rest of 2021 tour dates due to a reported heart surgery. Watts died that year on August 24.
The English rock band hasn’t been on tour since 2021. The upcoming tour in April will be the first tour since Watts’ death.
The No Filter tour will include stops in cities like Seattle, Denver and Los Angeles.

After decades of living an infamously under-the-influence lifestyle, The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards has shared that he’s been relatively “straight” recently, enjoying his time without cigarettes, drugs, and the frequent drinks he once had. This may make it seem like Richards is turning into a new man, but fear not, his signature Brit grit is still as strong as ever, and some of his stubborn stances remain unchanged, like his unsavory opinion of rap music.
“I don’t really like to hear people yelling at me and telling me it’s music, aka rap,” Richards said in a new interview with The Telegraph, before driving his point home with a subtle “complain about my wife” jab. “I can get enough of that without leaving my house.”
With the quote, Richards — who also suggested in 2015 that hip-hop is only “a drum beat and somebody yelling” for “tone-deaf people” — manages to belittle an entire cross-generational,...

The Rolling Stones built their reputation by playing blue-blooded rock music. Yet many of their No. 1 hits were heartstring-tugging ballads. Here are some of The Rolling Stones’ best ballads from their 60-year career.
(l-r) Rolling Stones members Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, Mick Jagger, Mick Taylor, and Keith Richards | Pa Images via Getty Images 1. ‘As Tears Go By’
The Rolling Stones essentially covered this song by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. They handed it to Marianne Faithfull (Jagger’s girlfriend at the time), who recorded her version first.
Somehow, the 20-something Jagger convincingly conveyed the longing and loneliness of old age with just a few lines of lyrics in a song lasting less than three minutes. The gently plucked acoustic guitar and syrupy strings added to the effect. The Stones dropped the folk-tinged “As Tears Go By” in 1966, and it stands as one of their finest ballads decades later.

The Rolling Stones eventually developed into a band capable of writing their own No. 1 hits, but they relied on cover songs and kind composers giving them music on many of their early tunes. John Lennon and Paul McCartney gave the Stones the song that became their first hit. Mick Jagger and Keith Richard gave away a top-10 hit to another musician before The Rolling Stones notched a top-10 tune of their own.

The Rolling Stones‘ “Start Me Up” is one of the band’s most famous songs. In addition, it has a lyric that’s completely disgusting. That hasn’t stopped it from appearing in an Applebee’s commercial!
The Rolling Stones | Michael Putland / Contributor The Rolling Stones’ ‘Start Me Up’ is gross but somehow not controversial
For better or worse, The Rolling Stones were never afraid to be tasteless. For example, “Sympathy for the Devil” came at a time when Satanism in rock music was a lot more controversial. Mick Jagger sang “Midnight Rambler” from the perspective of the Boston Strangler at a time when his murders were fresh in the public consciousness. “Brown Sugar” is just about the most offensive classic rock song of all time.
“Start Me Up” doesn’t go as far as the latter two songs, but it’s still disgusting. Furthermore, it doesn’t seem to...

Thus, making it the most-watched half-hour series launch in Bounce history.
The initial airing was also pushed with a special presentation on Bounce’s sister network, Ion.
“It’s the storytelling. It’s wonderful and I think there needs to be something said about how it really well represents black women in America today. That’s a real breath of fresh air,” said executive producer and David Hudson. “It’s fun, it’s funny, it’s engaging, it’s reflective. I think it has real broad appeal for a lot of women, men as well.”
Hudson adds: “Straight off the bat as we started...

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, it’s hard to argue The Rolling Stones aren’t one of the most popular bands ever. Paul McCartney claimed George Harrison got the Stones their recording contract, but whether or not that’s true doesn’t matter. They made the most of their opportunity and created several seminal albums along the way. They also found success on the Billboard singles chart. Eight Rolling Stones songs reached No. 1, but some ranked higher than others.
Note: We ranked The Rolling Stones’ eight No. 1 hits based on weeks atop the Billboard singles chart and total weeks on the chart. The only place we had to make an editorial decision was at the No. 4 spot.

The premise was simple enough: A no-nonsense, non-conformist, feminine “guy’s girl” journalist sets out to make a man fall in love with her — all for the sake of a big break at work. When “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” hit theaters on February 7, 2003, the Kate Hudson- and Matthew McConaughey-starring romantic comedy ushered in a new generation of a revived rom-com sub-genre: quippy romances all about female journalists.
In the Donald Petrie film, Andie Anderson (Hudson) half-jokingly pitches the idea of using all the “what not to do” tips of Composure, the Cosmo-esque fastest growing women’s magazine she works at, to prove the opposite: being disinterested and not clingy works better to land a husband, or better yet, find true love. Classic rock songs are awesome … except when they’re not! Here’s a look at five classic rock songs with highly offensive lyrics. To keep this list relevant, it only mentions hits or tunes from hit albums. Notably, the only Beatles track on the list was directly inspired by an Elvis Presley song.
The Beatles | Icon and Image / Contributor 5. The Beatles’ ‘Run for Your Life’
In “Baby, Let’s Play House,” Elvis Presley sang “I’d rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man.” That’s creepy and possessive. At least it’s only a small part of the song.
According to the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John Lennon built The Beatles’ “Run for Your Life” around Elvis’ terrible line. John admitted he wasn’t a big fan of the song — although George Harrison inexplicably liked it.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

For 45 years, the Rolling Stones’ Love You Live has been one of rock’s greatest teases. About 75 percent of the double LP was recorded in arenas and stadiums during the band’s 1976 tour, and presented competent but rarely exhilarating or necessary renditions of concert warhorses and deep cuts. But tucked away (on side three) were four songs cut at Toronto’s tiny El Mocambo club in March 1977, when the Stones played a surprise set billed as “The Cockroaches.”

If you’re looking for new movies and TV shows to watch on Amazon Prime Video in April, you’ve come to the right place. This month doesn’t bring a ton in terms of new Prime Video originals, but there are a few noteworthy titles. “Outer Range,” premiering April 15, is a new series that’s essentially “Yellowstone” but sci-fi. Josh Brolin plays a rancher fighting for his land in Wyoming who encounters a supernatural twist.
There’s also “A Very British Scandal,” which stars Claire Foy and Paul Bettany and focuses on the divorce of the Duke and Dutchess of Argyll, and the second season of the animated series “Undone” on April 29.
In terms of Prime Video movies, Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton star in the thriller ”All the Old Knives” which is streaming on April 8, and noteworthy library titles being added in April include “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,...

Good news for all you Brolin-heads! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for April 2022 is highlighted by one very intriguing TV project starring Thanos himself.
The Josh Brolin-starring Outer Range premieres April 15 and looks like it could be a wild ride. The synopsis is terse and reads “A rancher fighting for his land and family stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness, forcing a confrontation with the Unknown in ways both intimate and cosmic in the untamable American West.” That, combined with an enigmatic first trailer, has our interest piqued.
Also on the TV side of things this month is season 2 of the beautifully rotoscoped series Undone on April 29. Rosa Salazar returns as Alma, a woman who may have become unstuck in time to help save her scientist father’s life. Before that, the British TV series The Outlaws makes its debut...

The news about Charlie Watts, who died yesterday at 80, deeply impacted the Rolling Stones drummer’s colleagues and peers — but also subsequent generations of rockers. Like the Stones, the Black Keys cut their teeth on blues songs and went on to write their own material, songs that never lost sight of their gritty origins.
For the last show of their 50th-anniversary tour, at Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center in December 2012, the Stones invited the Black Keys to join them onstage. (Other guests: Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, and John Mayer.

The unbelievably sad news that Charlie Watts has died is just beginning to reverberate around the world. The public knew he was going to miss out on the upcoming Stones tour since he was recovering from surgery, but the 80-year-old drummer had survived past health scares unscathed and it truly seemed like he was made of steel.
Watts joined the Rolling Stones in January 1963 and is the only member besides Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to appear on every record. He also didn’t miss a single concert throughout his 58-year history in the band.

Showtime has given a pilot order to comedy The Wood, based on the 1999 feature film, from Justin Hillian, Rick Famuyiwa and Showtime sibling Paramount Television Studios.
Famuyiwa, who co-wrote and directed the film, will direct the pilot and executive produce with Hillian, who will pen the script. The pilot order was announced during Showtime’s virtual TCA presentation Tuesday.
The Wood is an honest look at friendship and dating from the perspective of three young Black males born and raised in the gentrifying L.A. suburb of Inglewood, fondly referred to by locals as the City Of Champions. The trio’s struggles to balance fatherhood, ambition and loyalty force them to question if they are growing apart … or closer together. Back when WarnerMedia (which technically no longer exists in the same form) announced that it would be premiering its entire slate of 2021 films on HBO Max, this is the kind of month they likely had in mind. For HBO Max’s list of new releases in August 2021 is highlighted by an honest-to-goodness blockbuster.
The Suicide Squad is set to premiere Aug. 5 on HBO Max. This film featuring some of DC Comics’ most curious villains borrows its name, format, and many of its characters from the David Ayers-directed 2016 film Suicide Squad. This time around, the rogues gallery is directing by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) and his colorful disposition. In addition to The Suicide Squad, August sees the arrival of the Hugh Jackman-starring Reminiscence on Aug. 20.

HBO Max will arguably debut its biggest Warner Bros. release yet on August 5, when James Gunn’s take on “The Suicide Squad” makes its day-and-date premiere on the streaming platform (the comic book blockbuster is also coming out in theaters nationwide).
But beyond “The Suicide Squad,” film fans will find a copious amount of features on HBO Max in August 2021, including a new Hugh Jackman movie, plus classic ‘90s favorites like “Basic Instinct,” “The Birdcage,” “The Fugitive,” “Deep Cover,” “Malcolm X,” and “The Shawshank Redemption.”
Ahead, every new movie and series coming to HBO Max in August 2021, plus the top titles leaving the service before September 1.

The news of Dusty Hill’s death, announced Wednesday by his bandmates in Zz Top, deeply impacted everyone from fans to fellow musicians. Not surprisingly, that list includes Dan Auerbach. It’s easy to draw a straight line from Zz Top to the Black Keys, especially from the rawness of the group’s first few albums to the Keys’ earliest, equally stripped-down takes on the blues. “They were a blues band with their own sound,” Auerbach says, “and that’s hard to do.”
But the connection between the two bands ran deep.

Apple TV+’s docuseries 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything makes it seem like The Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main Street album was more fun to record than listen to, and that sets a high standard. The record distills the band’s sounds, from acoustic world music political ballads, through deep heartfelt blues, to honky tonk so funky you have to shake your ass. The group plays country, Southern blues, R&b, and the almost-punk-before-punk “Rip This Joint.” “Tumbling Dice,” is a radio staple. Keith Richards even took the lead vocals on a track to keep you happy. There was so much material, it came out as a double album. What could be more fun than that?
