Two hotly-favored competition frontrunners, Spain’s motherhood-focused “Lullaby” and “Utama,” shot on an awe-inspiring Bolivian Altiplano, swept the board at a historic, 25th Málaga Film Festival which said a lot about the current state of the Spanish film industry.
Running March 18-26, the Festival proved a vibrant affair, galvanised by renewed interest in the Spanish cinema after a buoyant reception for its major movies at Berlin, as well as the joy of proving the first time many industry attendees had seen each other in person in two years and backing from Spain’s Avs Hub plan for a vastly larger industry presence.
In Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s “Lullaby,” coming after Sundance hit “Piggy” and Carla Simón’s Berlin Golden Bear triumph “Alcarrás,” Spain would look to have a third art pic breakout in just the first three months of 2022, all driven by a young generation of women cineastes, directors and producers.

After signing a first look film and TV deal with Netflix, Jennifer Lopez has set yet another project with the streamer, this time a science fiction film called “Atlas” that “San Andreas” filmmaker Brad Peyton will direct.
In “Atlas,” Lopez will play a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. To out-think this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most — another AI.
Aron Eli Coleite wrote the latest draft of the screenplay based on an original script by Leo Sardarian.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce “Atlas” for for Safehouse Pictures, as will Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson for Asap Entertainment and Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions.

Jennifer Lopez is humanity’s last hope.
Well, at least that’s the premise of “Atlas,” a sci-fi thriller set to star the “Jenny From the Block” singer and “Hustlers” actress. Brad Peyton, who orchestrated on-screen carnage in “Rampage” and “San Andreas,” will direct the film. “Atlas” unfolds in a bleak-sounding future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. Obviously, this extremist approach to achieving a pacifist paradise doesn’t go down so well with Lopez, who finds herself teaming up with, as the official logline puts it: “the one thing she fears most — another AI.” Dun dun dun!
“Having the chance to direct Jennifer in the title role of this movie is a dream come true, as I know she’ll bring the incredible strength, depth and authenticity we’ve all come to admire from her work,” Peyton said.

On Monday morning, French playwright Florian Zeller’s first feature film, The Father, collected six Oscar nominations. And it seems there will be more where that came from. Speaking via Zoom after nominations were announced, Zeller revealed to Deadline that he’s currently finishing up an adaptation of the newest of his plays: The Son—and he knows exactly who he wants to cast, too.
A story of the slow slide into dementia, The Father is told from the point of view of Anthony (Anthony Hopkins), as he wanders confused through a mental hall of mirrors, failing to recognize his daughter (Olivia Colman) and his environment. The Son forms a trio with The Father and another of Zeller’s plays, The Mother. Florian Zeller always knew he wanted to make his directorial debut with a film version of his Tony-winning play “The Father” and that it would be in English. While he knew that he wanted Sir Anthony Hopkins to play the title character, he never expected this to happen. “The character’s name became Anthony. I knew it was not an easy dream to fulfill, because he is Sir Anthony Hopkins. But I did not want to close the door to this possibility because I knew he would be very powerful in this part.” Zeller was part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel, conducted virtually by this writer (watch the exclusive video above).
In “The Father,” an elderly man refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman). As he tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, himself and even the fabric of his reality.

The Mother — that role that was once cautioned against for young actors — is far more realistic than it used to be. This year’s crop of comedy actress Emmy nominees plays an array of characters that embrace the authenticity of motherhood as a piece (not entirety) of the female experience, relegating June Cleaver archetypes firmly in the rearview mirror.
