Two hotly-favored competition frontrunners, Spain’s motherhood-focused “Lullaby” and “Utama,” shot on an awe-inspiring Bolivian Altiplano, swept the board at a historic, 25th Málaga Film Festival which said a lot about the current state of the Spanish film industry.

Running March 18-26, the Festival proved a vibrant affair, galvanised by renewed interest in the Spanish cinema after a buoyant reception for its major movies at Berlin, as well as the joy of proving the first time many industry attendees had seen each other in person in two years and backing from Spain’s Avs Hub plan for a vastly larger industry presence.

In Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s “Lullaby,” coming after Sundance hit “Piggy” and Carla Simón’s Berlin Golden Bear triumph “Alcarrás,” Spain would look to have a third art pic breakout in just the first three months of 2022, all driven by a young generation of women cineastes, directors and producers.

The event is a major showcase of Spanish and Latin American content to the international market.

The world premiere of Jorge Coira’s Codigo Emperador, starring Luis Tosar, opens the 25th edition of the Málaga Film Festival (Mff) today (March 18), marking the first time the Spanish and Latin American-focused event has run in-person for two years. The spy thriiller also opens in Spain today.

Gael Garcia Bernal is set to star in the Marvel Studios Halloween special currently in the works at Disney Plus, Variety has confirmed with sources.

Plot details for the untitled special are being kept under wraps, but sources say that Bernal could be playing a character based on the Marvel character Werewolf by Night. Two different characters have shared that moniker, specifically Jack Russell and Jake Gomez. Both were capable of transforming into a werewolf at will while retaining their human intellects. The special would begin production in early 2022.

After signing a first look film and TV deal with Netflix, Jennifer Lopez has set yet another project with the streamer, this time a science fiction film called “Atlas” that “San Andreas” filmmaker Brad Peyton will direct.

In “Atlas,” Lopez will play a woman fighting for humanity in a future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. To out-think this rogue AI, Atlas must work with the one thing she fears most — another AI.

Aron Eli Coleite wrote the latest draft of the screenplay based on an original script by Leo Sardarian.

Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will produce “Atlas” for for Safehouse Pictures, as will Brad Peyton and Jeff Fierson for Asap Entertainment and Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina for Nuyorican Productions.

Filmmaker Niki Caro and Charlize Theron are teaming up to develop a feature film about women’s fight for equality in big wave surfing for Netflix.

The feature is based on Daniel Duane’s New York Times Magazine article, “The Fight For Gender Equality In One of the Most Dangerous Sports on Earth,” and the four women — Bianca Valenti, Andrea Moller, Paige Alms, Keala Kennelly — who are fighting for the right to compete in big-wave contests.

The four women form a powerful bond as they surf dangerous spots including California’s Maverick’s and Maui’s Jaws while asserting their right to join the male-dominated competitions.

After debuting well over a year ago at Sundance Film Festival, Florian Zeller’s The Father has emerged as one of the most acclaimed films of the season, earning six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Now, the director is planning his follow-up and it’ll be familiar to anyone that knows his work.

He’s embarking on an adaptation of his play The Son, which forms at trio with The Father and another one of his plays, The Mother (which Isabelle Huppert performed in 2019). Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern have now come aboard his feature film adaptation of The Son, Deadline reports.

Adapted by Zeller and Christopher Hampton, the film follows Peter (Jackman) “as his busy life with new partner Emma and their baby is thrown into disarray when his ex-wife Kate (Dern) turns up with their teenage son, Nicholas. The young man is is troubled, distant and angry, playing truant from school for months.

Brandi Carlile has earned accolades — and Grammy awards — as the songwriter of such personal works as “The Joke,” “The Story,” and “The Mother.” This spring, she’ll share an even more intimate, lengthy tale with the release of her first memoir, Broken Horses. Due April 6th via Crown, an imprint of Random House Publishing Group, the book follows Carlile through her childhood to becoming one of music’s most agile and hard-to-pin-down artists.

In an interview with Rolling Stone this summer, Carlile described the book as an amalgamation of things.

After hitting indie gold with their beloved 2012 drama “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” filmmaker and composer Benh Zeitlin and composer Dan Romer have reunited to craft another sweeping score for Zeitlin’s much-anticipated followup film. More than seven years in the making, “Wendy” finally premiered at Sundance in January and is gearing up for a theatrical release at the end of the month.

Before Daniel Craig hangs up his license to kill, the Museum of Modern Art will offer up a film series tribute to the actor’s big screen career. The program, which will run from March 3 to 22, comes on the eve of Craig’s final appearance as James Bond in “No Time to Die.”

“I couldn’t ever imagine being put in a museum, but what an honor and a thrill to be shown at MoMA,” noted Craig.

The film series will trace Craig’s evolution from European arthouse regular to A-list superstar. It will include notable early turns by Craig in the likes of John Maybury’s “Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon” (1998), Roger Mitchell’s “The Mother” (2003) and “Enduring Love” (2004), and Matthew Vaughn’s “Layer Cake,” the stylish crime thriller that helped the actor land the 007 franchise.
