Omar Sharif Jr. got early career advice from his celebrated grandfather, the legendary Hollywood actor Omar Sharif best known for his Golden Globe-winning performances in 1962’s “Lawrence of Arabia” and the title role in 1965’s “Dr. Zhivago”: Acting is not enough.
“My grandfather used to always say there’s nothing more boring than being an actor,” the 38-year-old Sharif told TheWrap with a chuckle. “Later on in his life, he used to take roles just literally to pay off gambling debts. It wasn’t for anything else. It was to cover costs at the racetrack.”
Despite his grandfather’s words, Omar Sharif Jr. did become an actor — and he recently joined the cast of the long-running Israeli rom-com series “Beauty and the Baker.” But being a performer is indeed not enough for the younger Sharif, who has been an outspoken LGBTQ activist since famously coming out as gay in...

In the world of K-pop, an artist’s most precious commodity isn’t necessarily their angelic voice or tight double pirouette — it’s time. That’s because for the majority of male K-pop idols, looming in the distance is the guarantee that once you reach your late twenties, you’ll have to serve in the Korean military for 18 months.
So when Suho, the 30-year-old leader of multi-platinum juggernaut Exo, appears onscreen as he calls in from Seoul a week after his discharge, the most noticeable thing about him is a sense of serenity.

Captivated by the seemingly many personas of late actor Omar Sharif, Egyptian filmmaker Mark Lotfy and Swedish director Axel Petersén delved into the legendary star’s eventful career, tracing how the politics of 1950s Egypt formed the international star’s complex character.
Their new documentary, “The Life and Times of Omar Sharif,” shows in particular how the policies of President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the political climate of the time led him to change his name and convert to Islam, and later to become a cosmopolitan individual who was equally at home in Cairo, Paris or Los Angeles.
Sharif’s life and career are described as a “dramatic balancing act, set on an East-West axis, illustrated by the hundreds of characters he played, on and off screen, in the changing political landscapes of Hollywood and the Middle East.”

In 1984, the Oscar-winning actress Sophia Loren (“Two Women”) and her then-11-year-old son Edoardo Ponti starred in the TV movie “Aurora.” That little-remembered film began a lovely collaboration between the legendary actress and Ponti, Loren’s younger son by her late husband, producer Carlo Ponti.
Edoardo Ponti gave up acting and switched to directing after earning a fine arts degree in 1998 from USC in film directing in production. And he directed Loren for the first time in the 2002 drama “Between Strangers.” Mother and son both earned acclaimed for their 2014 short, “The Human Voice,” based on Jean Cocteau’s one-act 1930 play.
Their latest collaboration-and Loren’s first film since “The Human Voice”- is the Italian drama “The Life Ahead,” a contemporary adaptation of Romain Gary’s 1975 best-seller “The Life Before Us.” The still-stunning 86-year-old Loren plays a Holocaust survivor named Madame Rosa who becomes unlikely friends with a rebellious 12-year-old...

Since Ring hit Japanese cinemas in January 1998, The Ring series has seen a whopping 12 movies released. Those have been divided into various sub-franchises, with Japan and the Us telling their own stories and South Korea getting a look in with The Ring Virus. The most recent efforts have been 2017’s Rings in the Us and last year’s Sadako in Japan. Both underperformed, and though Rings earned a box office haul of $83 million on a $25 million budget, that’s just a fraction of its predecessors.

Omar Sharif in 'Doctor Zhivago.' Egyptian star Omar Sharif, 'The Karate Kid' producer Jerry Weintraub: Brief career recaps A little late in the game – and following the longish Theodore Bikel article posted yesterday – below are brief career recaps of a couple of film veterans who died in July 2015: actor Omar Sharif and producer Jerry Weintraub. A follow-up post will offer an overview of the career of peplum (sword-and-sandal movie) actor Jacques Sernas, whose passing earlier this month has been all but ignored by the myopic English-language media. Omar Sharif: Film career beginnings in North Africa The death of Egyptian film actor Omar Sharif at age 83 following a heart attack on July 10 would have been ignored by the English-language media (especially in the U.S.) as well had Sharif remained a star within the Arabic-speaking world. After all, an "international" star is only worth remembering...

The bad news was confirmed Friday morning: Omar Sharif, the Egyptian-born actor who shot to superstardom in the 1960s after scoring back-to-back-to-back hits with "Lawrence of Arabia," "Dr. Zhivago" and "Funny Girl," died on Friday in a Cairo hospital. He was 83, and had also been battling Alzheimer's. According to his agent Steve Kenis, the cause was heart attack. And here's a bittersweet irony: In what likely will be his last feature film, Laila Marrakchi's amusing dramedy "Rock the Casbah," Sharif gives one of his finest performances of recent years -- as a ghost who invites us to join him at his own funeral. As fate would have it, I've had only one opportunity to speak with Sharif, during a 2003 interview graciously arranged by the folks at Sony Pictures Classics to promote "Monsieur Ibrahim" (for which Sharif would win a 2004 Cesar award as Best Actor). The conversation would also serve well as background material for a.

Omar Sharif, the handsome, Egyptian-born actor best known for his Oscar-nominated role as Sherif Ali in David Lean’s Lawrence Of Arabia (1962) and the title role in Lean’s follow-up Doctor Zhivago (1965) has died. Sharif appeared in other notable films including the title role in Che! (1969), Juggernaut (1974), and Funny Lady (1975). He had made a comeback of sorts in 2004 with Monsieur Ibrahim, which had won him the coveted César Award. Sharif was quite the renaissance man, speaking four languages, and was considered one of the world’s foremost experts on the card game Bridge, having written several books on the subject and he licensed his name to a Bridge computer game. Sharif remained close friends with his Lawrence Of Arabia costar Peter O’Toole until O’Toole’s death in 2013. Omar Sharif was diagnosed with Alzheimers in 2012 and died today of a heart attack at a hospital in Cairo.

How about that young and exciting German actor who portrayed the teenage Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf? Yes, Tom Shilling! And that awesome young guy in AfterSchool? I need to know if he has done more movies! Ezra Miller!

"They ought to be in More pictures!" seems to be the perfect expression for these gifted young actors who have shown such talents but remain relatively unknown and waiting for more movie audiences to discover them.

Indie producers skirt ban; SAG panel gets screeners
The MPAA's modified screener ban has been breached. Members of the SAG nominating committee have been sent video screeners of Monsier Ibrahim, which Sony Pictures Classics is releasing in the United States beginning Dec. 5. The move appears to be the first instance of a film distributed by an MPAA member company finding its way to a group other than the sanctioned Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Under the terms of the current screener ban, SPC, a unit of Sony Pictures Entertainment, may not send out screeners for its films to anyone but members of the Academy who have signed the screener agreement, but in this case, the screeners are being issued not by SPC but by the film's French producers, the husband and wife team of Laurent Petin and Michele Halberstadt Petin, who produced the $5 million-$6 million film through their ARP Prods. in association with France 3 Cinema and Canal+. SPC acquired domestic distribution rights to the film last May.

Omar Quit After Embarrassing Banderas Flop
Movie veteran Omar Sharif was so embarrassed by his role in Antonio Banderas flop The 13th Warrior he quit acting. The Lawrence Of Arabia star was so disappointed with the 1999 movie he decided never to make another film. Sharif, who has only just come out of semi-retirement to film French movie Monsieur Ibrahim, says, "After my small role in The 13th Warrior, I said to myself, 'Let us stop this nonsense, these meal tickets that we do because it pays well.' I thought, 'Unless I find a stupendous film that I love and that makes me want to leave home to do, I will stop.' Bad pictures are very humiliating, I was really sick. It is terrifying to have to do the dialogue from bad scripts, to face a director who does not know what he is doing, in a film so bad that it is not even worth exploring."...
