Fresh off removing himself from the block with a Veto win on Wednesday night’s episode of “Big Brother,” Xavier Prather holds the number one ranking atop our Gold Derby predictions for a second week in a row. Viewers think the 27-year-old lawyer from Milwaukee is playing the best game (so far) and is most likely to take home the $750,000 grand prize. Xavier found himself on the block this week next to Claire Rehfuss even though Head of Household Sarah Beth Steagall didn’t nominate him. Instead, a spin of the roulette wheel following Alyssa Lopez‘s High Roller’s Room victory determined his fate. Once Xavier pulled himself off the block, Sarah Beth replaced him with Derek Xiao.

Premiering last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, if there was one thing everyone could agree on about Aaron Sorkin‘s directorial debut “Molly’s Game,” it was that it was very… Aaron Sorkin-y. Even if his chops behind the camera still need some work, the dialogue is exactly what you’d expect. It’s no “The Social Network” or even “Steve Jobs” (which was pretty underrated, if you ask me) but it does feature Jessica Chastain gamely chewing into the screenplay while wearing some outrageously beautiful/trashy attire.

At 15 tonnes each, the gargantuan cabins that comprise the new Las Vegas High Roller – a viewing platform that somewhat apes London’s Eye but done American style – is a phenomenal achievement.
Even on the face of it, the High Roller is worth a spin due to the sheer technical achievement of assembling the cabins after a 500 mile trip from their original construction site, to the final destination.
The Las Vegas strip was already a stunning visual achievement, but just wait until you’re looking across the entire city from the skies in one of the 28 individual passenger cabins.

Measuring 550 feet tall and capable of carrying over a thousand passengers, the record-breaking “High Roller” officially opened for business yesterday on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images The main attraction in the shopping and entertainment district known as The Linq, the High Roller looks both decadent and terrifying, featuring 28 spherical cabins weighing 44,000 pounds each, encased in steel and glass. Each “pod” can hold 40 people, and is equipped with its own sound system and video monitors. The wheel itself, which is lit by 2,000 Led lights in changing colors, takes 30 minutes to complete a single rotation. Photo: Casino Enterprise Mgmt After three years of design, planning and construction, the High Roller now passes the 541-foot Singapore Flyer (built in part by the same engineering company) to capture the title of the world's tallest Ferris Wheel. In case you hadn't noticed, hillbillies are cashing in on their 15 minutes of fame on reality TV. From "Duck Dynasty" to "Moonshiners" to "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," we're in the middle of a redneck revolution.

There have been countless movies made about poker; there’s a machine in Hollywood just making movies about the game and its players. Poker tournaments are now on par with major sporting events, it’s a part of the mainstream now more than ever. We cheer for the heroes and even the degenerates from time to time; it’s a great game that can make for a great film. Here are my favorite movies to feature the game, sound off in the comments below and share your own.

When Sucker Punch arrived in cinemas earlier this year, it’s fair to say that its reception wasn’t particularly warm. While the film had its defenders, the overall consensus was that Zack Snyder’s dark action movie was best avoided.
My initial response to Sucker Punch was less than positive, but I was still intrigued to learn that the film had been heavily edited for its theatrical release. Warner, anxious to make Sucker Punch as audience-friendly as possible to ensure a potentially lucrative 12A certificate, had the film trimmed by almost seventeen minutes. Could it be, I wondered, that Snyder - a normally decent director, whose Dawn Of The Dead remake I greatly enjoyed - was forced to compromise his vision for the mighty dollar?...

To the discerning film fan the modern multiplex can be a depressing and woefully uninteresting place to quench one’s thirst for cinematic pleasures. Filled as it so often is with unrelentingly banal and superficial Hollywood spectacles that fail to even be the simplistic fireworks displays that they appear to promise to be.
To find a film that is also actually about something is like trying to find a tiny nugget of gold in an increasingly deep pile of manure. Aiding you in avoiding the bulk of the pile is a kind of consensus opinion that tends to spread quickly regarding those films that simply add to that pile and in particular those that load it on in wheelbarrow fulls. This often doesn’t seem to make a difference to box office receipts though, Transformers 3 being a recent example of this trend, and sometimes this advance word also just gets it plain wrong.

Chicago – We’ve seen a lot of overly stylized films based on video games and comic books but rarely has there been a movie more derivative of other mediums yet not actually based on one than Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch,” a movie loathed by dozens of major critics (and defended by our very own Patrick McDonald) and recently released on Blu-ray and DVD in a 17-minute longer extended cut.

Eighteen minutes of footage have been added to Zack Snyder's fantasy adventure Sucker Punch for a brand-new director's cut on the upcoming Blu-ray.
Warner Bros has announced that the DVD and Blu-ray editions of the film will hit UK shelves on August 8.
Both formats include four animated features which aim to take viewers deeper into the filmmaker's immersive world.
The film stars Emily Browning as Babydoll, a young woman who retreats into a fantasy realm when she is locked up in an asylum.
She urges four other young girls - reluctant Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), outspoken Rocket (Jena Malone), street-smart Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and fiercely loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) - to band together and try to escape a terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue (Oscar Isaac) and Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino), before the mysterious High Roller (Jon Hamm) comes for them.

We have come to love Zack Snyder’s visual style, attention to detail, and ability to adapt comics to the silver screen. But, we don’t really have a sense of what he can do on his, without someone else’s work to rely on for inspiration. That is, until this March when he unveiled Sucker Punch, a personal project that had been gestating in his mind for years and he finally was given the opportunity to make it a reality.
Some reality. The mind-bending storyline is a visually and aural feast but is somewhat soulless and cold, not just from the over-reliance on CGI for background and texture but for the total lack of attention to characterization. Like the computer backgrounds, everything is on the surface, giving the cast little to work with, turning them into two-dimensional players on his digital chessboard. Most of that explains why the film fizzled both critically and commercially.

Sucker Punch is a sort of live-action fairy tale from the mind of Zach Snyder (300, Watchmen) that puts a young girl named Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who is blamed for her younger sisters death after they both watch their mom pass away, only to be left with their evil step father. She is taken off to a mental institution where she engages in a mental fight for her life as she delves deep into her subconscious she meets up with other interesting and might I add very good looking characters that she kind of replaces from her reality. Enter Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung) who take on these crazy missions with Baby Doll each time she is confronted in reality. Baby Doll is left with the ultimate decision on which path to take at the end,

Sucker Punch was one of my most anticipated movies this year, and as much as I enjoyed watching the action sequences in the film, it ultimately ended up being a disappointment. Warner Bros. has announced that they will be releasing an extended R-rated directors cut of the film. I'm not sure if that will make it any better, putting more blood and gore into the film wont help that terrible script that Snyder wrote. It will feature 18 extra minutes; hopefully of action and not dialogue. The Blu-ray will also include the Animated Shorts: Sucker Punch Prequel Stories feature, a maximum movie mode hosted by director Zack Snyder, and a digital copy of the film.
I wish I could be more excited about this, but I think I've seen all I wanted to see from this movie. What do you think? Will you be picking up a copy?

We're not even halfway through 2011, but it's safe to say that Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch has been one of the year's biggest disappointments [1]. When Snyder premiered footage from the film at San Diego Comic Con 2010, many fans (myself included) ate it up, anticipating a mind-bending, genre-blending, roller coaster ride of geeky goodness and that anticipation built with each and every piece of material released [2]. Then the film came out. And it was incoherent, boring and - frankly - tame. Maybe that'll change on June 28 when Warner Bros. releases an R-rated, extended cut of the film on the Blu-ray with an extra 18 minutes of footage. After the jump, read about one of the extended scenes and more. Thanks to /Film reader Kees for the heads up on this news, which comes from DVD Active [3]. There they show the sales page for the upcoming Blu-ray release. It'll feature the R-rated extended cut with 18 extra minutes,...

[1] Despite the flurry [2] of [3] attention [4] that Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch received from sites like ours upon its opening last weekend, the film so far has been a commercial disappointment. Sucker Punch fell short of its projections when it opened last weekend, losing first place at the box office to Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Its $19M opening weekend gross was Snyder's second-worst to date -- his worst being last fall's Legends of the Guardian: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, which grossed $16M. (All figures come from Box Office Mojo [5].) And at a mere 20% on Rotten Tomatoes, Sucker Punch has proved to be a critical flop as well. But there's still a large chunk of that $82M budget needs to be earned back, and in an effort to draw in moviegoers for the film's second weekend, Warner Bros. has posted the first six minutes of Sucker Punch online. Watch it after the jump.

Yesterday evening London’s Vue Cinema played host to the UK Premiere of Sucker Punch, Zack Snyder’s latest visual indulgence. In attendance were most of the stars of the picture, along with a string of celebrities who definitely didn’t let the damp weather get them down!
The film, which hits cinemas on the 1st of April, stars a group of sexy starletts, Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung and packs quite a visual punch – even boasting what I would call the best damn dragon to ever grace the big screen!
Our intrepid reporter, Al Simmons was on hand to document events and provide us with a slew of exclusive images from the event, check them out after the official synopsis below and don’t forget to read his Premiere report and our Sucker Punch review too!

Summer is approaching, and that means that over the course of the next few months we will be treated to several films featuring muscular men in a variety of "macho movie awesome" displays - blowing things up, driving really fast, letting loose with thousands of rounds of ammo, etc. These will all be tremendously stupid films (to varying degrees, let's say). I bring this up, because they will all fly, more or less, under the critical radar. Critics will give them low ratings, and move on, and it is unlikely that you'll be forced to notice. "Ehh. This one isn't good. Duh. Whatever."
Sucker Punch is a film that is similar in many ways, except that the skantily-clad people pulling the triggers are women. Hot women. The call to arms is thus upon us, and not only will you hear more about this movie (and the particulars of its horribleness...

Scientists are constantly exploring the wonders of the human brain, particularly the subconscious. One of the discoveries is that in times of extreme trauma the brain can shut down responses to it’s surroundings and can either erase the experience or retreat into an alternate reality. This is one of the main themes of Zack Snyder’s new film Sucker Punch. Unlike his previous movies, this is not a remake ( Dawn Of The Dead ) nor an adaptation of a graphic novel ( 300, Watchmen ) although much of the imagery here is inspired by other films, TV shows, animation, and comic books. In Punch, Synder’s main heroine enters another reality in her mind. And then another reality within that one( similar to the dream levels in Inception ). Once again Snyder uses state of the art effects to create these different worlds.
The film begins after two theatrical curtains lift to reveal a simple bedroom backdrop.

Writer-director Zack Snyder's (300, Watchmen) new genre-bending action movie, Sucker Punch, opened nationwide last night. While it contained plenty of action-packed footage of Babydoll (Emily Browning) and her four fellow patients—Rocket (Jena Malone), Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), Amber (Jamie Chung) and Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish)—of the sadistic Lennox House mental hospital fighting dragons, orcs, zombie cyborgs and robots in breath-taking fantasy worlds, there was at least one scene that did not make it into the final cut. In a recent interview with Nylon (via CinemaBlend), Browning unleashed her anger at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for forcing Snyder to edit a love scene between Babydoll and High Roller (Jon Hamm) or risk losing the movie's PG-13 rating.

Girls, Guns and Rock N’ Roll…things we have seen before and something that Sucker Punch has loads of as Zack Snyder takes his unique visual style and lends it to his own story this time. A visually strong film, this an expected Alice in Wonderland with Machine Guns tale, about imagination and survival. Snyder doesn’t take any risks with the story nor does he show us anything we haven’t seen before but the appeal is merely the team of pussycat doll girls with lots of guns and Matrix style fighting skills. Still, a majority of the film feels like a giant music video while the story is as bland, absent and obvious as it gets.
One thing I can say is that I know why Chris Nolan, Legendary and Warner Brothers felt like Zack Snyder was the right choice to direct their upcoming Superman film. He is...

Zack Snyder‘s latest visual feast is his most divisive film yet, which is saying a lot. To clarify, this makes Watchmen seem safe and overly commercial in comparison. Sucker Punch is the type of film that will garner both violent hatred and unabashed love, with very few reactions falling in the middle-ground.
If Alice in Wonderland were made today with our unhinged pop-culture sensibilities, this is what we would get. Sucker Punch feels like an overloaded mash-up of manga, anime, video games, and comic books. The storyline even follows a video game structure, in the typical sense, which some will undoubtably criticize.

Hey gang! Regardless of how weak the script and acting was in Sucker Punch, I had an absolute blast watching it! It was a geeks fantasy come true, a movie about hot girls sexily dressed girls fighting off steampunk zombie Nazi's, robots, dragon's, samurais, villainous pimps and ugly cooks, all part of an elaborate plan to escape an insane asylum.
As much as I wanted to think the story of this film made sense it didn't. This movie was honestly just a collection of incredibly awesome, visually stunning action sequences. For those of you that have been looking forward to a new Heavy Metal movie… Sucker Punch is it. This is Heavy Metal brought to life. Awesome fantasy sci-fi art mixed with some great pulse pounding music.
Zack Snyder doesn't really have a talent for writing, but he's got an incredibly vivid imagination, and he did an fantastic job directing the movie.
