A giant wall of whispering books, almost like a Borgesian brain of fiction, encircles the table at which Christoph Hochhäusler, myself and the owner take place to discuss their films. The idea of the interview was to get Petzold’s take on Hochhäusler’s The City Below (2010) and Hochhäusler’s take on Petzold’s The State I Am In (2000). Chicago – The third week of the 12th Annual EU Film Festival at the Siskel Film Center is nearly upon us and we’re back to give you an idea of what to expect in the second half of arguably the best fest in the Windy City. We feature great new films from Ireland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

The first half of EU 2009 (which you can read about here and here) produced some excellent films including Ireland’s “Kisses,” Denmark’s “Worlds Apart,” and France’s “Shall We Kiss?” There’s nothing that we’ve seen that’s quite as notable as “Kisses” or “Worlds Apart,” the two best of the fest through week three, but there is a quartet of films well worth seeing this weekend. BERLIN -- Fatih Akin's Golden Bear winner Head-On picked up another honor Wednesday when the film's editor Andrew Bird was nominated for Germany's top editing award, the Schnitt Prize. Bird will go up against Natali Barrey for her work on Jan Krueger's Rotterdam Tiger winner En Route; Bettina Bohler for Christian Petzold's thriller Wolfsburg; Christian Lonk for rural melodrama Hierankl from director Sebastian Steinbichler; and Jurgen Winkelblech for Norbert Baumgarten's east-west comedy Liberated Zone. In the documentary category, Anja Pohl was nominated for editing the sleeper hit The Story of the Weeping Camel; alongside Mona Brauer for Pepe Danquart's Tour-de-France doc Hollentour; Benjamin Ikes for Jorg Siepmann's music documentary Golden Lemons; Inge Schneider for Andres Veiel's drama school portrait Addicted to Acting; and Valerie Smith for 7 Brothers by director Sebastian Winkels. Winners of the Schnit Prize -- which is backed by regional subsidy board Filmstifftung NRW and film association VG Bild-Kunst -- will be announced at a ceremony in Cologne on Nov. 29.

COLOGNE, Germany -- Fatih Akin's Head-On, the Golden Bear winner at the Berlin International Film Festival, leads the nominations for the German Film Prize, Germany's biggest film awards, with four mentions, including nominations for best picture and best director, as well as best actor noms for stars Birol Unel and Sibel Kekilli. Sonke Wortmann's boxoffice hit The Miracle of Bern, Leander Haussmann's '80s tragicomedy Berlin Blues and Christian Petzold's drama Wolfsberg were close on the heels of Head-On, picking up three nominations each.
