The film is loosely based on the Martinis' own childhood experiences.
Alec Baldwin, Cynthia Nixon, Rory Culkin, Timothy Hutton and Kieran Culkin were attached to the film for four years.
During production, Alec Baldwin worked 7-day weeks, splitting his days between the film and the television series 30 Rock (2006).
