James Mangold is making Swamp Thing for Warner Bros and DC – but he’s insistent that the film will be standing alone.
While he might have a highly-touted Bob Dylan biopic releasing this week, director James Mangold has otherwise been engaged in a frenzy of franchise filmmaking of late. There was last year’s Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny and next up, he’ll be turning his attention to a Star Wars prequel film which is said to chart the formation of the Jedi Order.
After that, the filmmaker will be turning his attention to a Swamp Thing movie for Warner Bros that will add to the growing number of entries in the new DC Universe.
Mangold has been talking just a little about that Swamp Thing project which presumably is some years away from production, given that any given Star Wars film doesn’t exactly whizz through the Lucasfilm system these days.

After having brought the iconic franchise to an end, James Mangold is looking back on Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny's underwhelming reception. The 2023 movie saw Harrison Ford return as the titular adventurer who, after his goddaughter gets wrapped up in the quest for the eponymous device, must race against time to find it before a former Nazi scientist and his mercenaries do. Co-written and directed by Mangold, the first to direct an installment in the franchise aside from Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was met with mixed-to-positive reviews and was a box office failure.
During a recent interview with Deadline for his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, Mangold was asked about the lackluster reaction to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The co-writer/director recalled how its development came when the Dylan biopic was on hold amid Covid and Chalamet's Dune schedule,...

Many hoped that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would wipe away the bad taste of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but the long-belated sequel didn’t quite hit the mark. The film received mixed reviews and was one of the biggest box office bombs of the year, grossing $384 million worldwide on a budget said to be well over $300 million. While speaking with Deadline, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold said he was hurt by the reaction to the film. “Challengers” star Josh O’Connor has joined the cast of Steven Spielberg’s new film.
As previously announced, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson will round out the call sheet on the yet-to-be-titled film. Universal Pictures will release the movie on May 15, 2026.
Spielberg is directing from a script by David Koepp, whose previous work with the filmmaker includes “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” The studio has described the project as a “new original event film,” though specific plot details haven’t been revealed. The screenplay is based on a story by Spielberg and expected to incorporate sci-fi elements. Kristie Macosko Krieger, who has collaborated with Spielberg on everything from “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” to “West Side Story,” will serve as a producer.

Quentin Tarantino is a man of his own choice, liking whatever appeases him and praising it unhesitatingly, and bashing whatever displeases him and lashing out at it unwaveringly without even fearing the outcome. That said, his choices – especially regarding the entertainment industry’s pieces, in particular – stand out as much as his extraordinarily remarkable personality as well.

For one, he praised the critically commended 2021 thriller masterpiece from Nicolas Cage, Pig, for simply blowing him away. At the same time, what most fans are failing to relate to is Tarantino’s love for Harrison Ford’s worst Indiana Jones film: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the two most popular film franchises created by George Lucas, and a startling theory explains how their stories could be connected. Exhausted from Star Wars' troubled production and worried the movie would be a flop, Lucas went on vacation to Hawaii with his friend and fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg instead of attending the premiere. While there, Lucas pitched his idea for what would eventually become Indiana Jones, and the first movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released four years later in 1981.
With the same incredible filmmaking and love for adventure serials that permeated the Star Wars original trilogy, it's easy to understand the fan overlap between both franchises despite the different genres. There have naturally been times when Star Wars referenced Indiana Jones and vice versa, but the world-famous archaeologist may have a more direct connection to the galaxy far, far away. By...

Despite Harrison Ford remaining a popular actor, Indiana Jones isn't the franchise with the most longevity, resulting in some then-entertaining quotes that haven't aged well. Following the famed Star Wars alumnus' character's various quests for supernatural artifacts from the ancient world, Indiana Jones was never entirely politically correct. In addition to this, "Indy" leans heavily into the outdated James Bond trope of there always being a pseudo-Bond Girl around, generally needing to be rescued.
Even some of the best quotes in the Indiana Jones movies don't have the intended effect today. Despite the efforts of the later movies to show more respect for the histories they engage with and create better female characters, they struggle to compete with some of the earlier installments, which are generally considered the best Indiana Jones movies. Indiana Jones delivers great action and witty quotes, but which parts of them audiences want to take at face value fluctuates.

Steven Spielberg's four Indiana Jones movies have all suddenly disappeared from Disney+ worldwide. Released in 1981, Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced Harrison Ford's intrepid archaeologist to the world, and he would subsequently return in four sequels, three of which Spielberg would direct. Spielberg's final installment in the franchise was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), with director James Mangold taking the reins for the fifth and seemingly final installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
Disney+ has now removed Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull worldwide. As of writing, Disney has not addressed the removal of the films. If you want to watch the classic “Indiana Jones” films on Disney+, you are out of luck right now. Currently, all the films have been removed except for Disney’s film “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
The franchise landing page on Disney+ does not include “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “Indiana Jones the Last Crusade,” or “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
Now, all that is available is Disney’s film and two specials about the film.

While Disney owns the “Indiana Jones” franchise, Paramount has the distribution rights to the first four films.

Steven Spielberg only had this James Bond actor in mind to play the father of Indiana Jones, Henry Jones, in the third Indy film, The Last Crusade. George Lucas imagined Laurence Olivier for the role, which was initially written to be a more serious one. However, Spielberg wanted to cast Sean Connery in the role and try to outdo his James Bond role.

Connery was initially hesitant to take on the role as he was done with franchise roles after the 007 stint. He signed on to the film after Spielberg agreed to make his character a match for his son. Connery even went on to do a famous ad-lib that was hilarious and a little disturbing at the same time.

At 77, Steven Spielberg isn’t holding back! The legendary director just dropped some truth bombs about his post-War of the Worlds flicks, admitting that the films that followed didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s not every day you hear a titan of cinema reflect so candidly, but Spielberg’s honesty shines through as he acknowledges a string of less-than-stellar projects.

Actor Shia Labeouf has fallen far from his 2000s heyday, mainly due to a series of abuse allegations and arrests for harassment, disorderly conduct and battery. Labeouf has spent the past few years attempting to rehabilitate his image, including a 2-hour-long interview on Jon Bernthal's podcast in 2022 where he talked about his path to sobriety and his many regrets.
Labeouf has also apologized for a more trivial offense: his trash-talking of director Steven Spielberg in the aftermath of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." The 2008 film, which had originally promised to revive the franchise and maybe even set up Labeouf's character as the Indiana Jones of the new generation, was a critical disappointment, and Labeouf didn't handled it well at the time.

Despite all its shortcomings, Steven Spielberg’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave fans one of the most iconic moments in the entire franchise, which sees Indy taking shelter from a nuclear blast in a refrigerator. Interestingly, the seeds for this scene were sown decades back during the scripting of one of the most influential films of all time.

Like the film itself, the opening and ending of Back to the Future are iconic, and it’s hard to imagine them otherwise. But this was almost the case until Universal cut the budget for the film.

While in most cases, a reduced budget often impacts a project negatively, in Back to the Future‘s case, it was certainly a blessing in disguise.

Cate Blanchett touched down in Toronto for a wide-ranging talk about creative conflict on film sets, making big-budget films “risky,” and why her six-time Oscar-nominated film “Carol” struggled to find funding.
Blanchett, who is at TIFF supporting Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ show “Disclaimer” and Guy Maddin’s film “Rumours,” was welcomed at the Royal Alexandra Theatre with a standing ovation after fans lined up early to acquire rush tickets to the event.
Early in the conversation, Blanchett talked about her love for performing theater in front of a live audience, leading her to address the “streamers out there” that don’t release viewership data.
“We want the numbers,” Blanchett said. “Not so we know how much money is being made, but we want to know how many eyeballs have been on things that we have made. That’s greatly important.”

Eve Hewson is in early talks to join the upcoming untitled event film set to be directed by Steven Spielberg, TheWrap has learned. If Hewson joins the project, this would be a reunion for the pair, as Hewson was also in Spielberg’s Academy Award-winning “Bridge of Spies.” The untitled Universal project is set for release on May 16, 2026.
The actress most recently starred in the new Netflix limited series “The Perfect Couple” opposite Nicole Kidman and Dakota Fanning and she’s set to return in Season 2 of “Bad Sisters” on Apple TV+ in November. Hewson is also known as the daughter of U2 lead singer Bono.
The untitled Spielberg event film is based on a story by the writer-director with a screenplay by David Koepp, a frequent Spielberg collaborator, who also wrote the scripts for “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds,” “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull...

Shia Labeouf may have played the fan-favorite, charming, and considerably awkward Sam Witwicky in the Transformers film series, but his real-life personality differs by major extents. To say the least, the actor, filmmaker, and performance artist is one of the most confident people in the entire industry with an aggressive personality that directly contradicts Sam’s.

This has been justified by all the times the actor has perfectly displayed his strength without hesitating. But while his knocking out Tom Hardy, who is easily one of the most badass actors in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry, in a friendly brawl is one thing, the actor recently once again almost got into a street fight that could have ended in an absolute disaster.

According to the unofficial Indiana Jones fan census, everyone pretty much agrees that Mutt Williams, played by Shia Labeouf in 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is the franchise’s least favorite offspring. Why? Well, not only does Mutt come out of nowhere as Indy’s long-lost son, but his leather-jacket-wearing, greaser persona just didn’t sit well with fans who were expecting something a bit more classic Indiana Jones.

People felt Shia Labeouf was a total miscast as Mutt Williams, with many struggling to believe that this annoying kid could possibly be the son of Indiana “freakin'” Jones! There was a strong sense that the franchise was just trying to cash in on Labeouf’s then-popularity. But does Mutt really deserve all that hate?
Why Indiana Jones Fans Absolutely Could Not Stand Shia Labeouf’s Mutt Williams?...

In a world dominated by superhero movies, two revered filmmakers, Steven Spielberg and James Cameron, are a class apart. They have never delved into the blockbuster genre but have produced some of the highest-grossing films of all time. Over the years, both have gained the reputation as two of the greatest directors in cinema history. They also lead the list of highest-grossing directors of all time.
However, Steven Spielberg ranks as the #1 highest-grossing filmmaker of all time. James Cameron, who ranked #2, is $2 billion short of dethroning Spielberg, who has a seven-year lead in filmmaking against him.
Steven Spielberg has grossed over $10 billion worldwide, making him the highest-grossing film director in the world. Meanwhile, James Cameron came in second with over $8 Billion. Steven Spielberg grossed $10 billion with 37 films. However, Cameron grossed over $8 billion with only 14 films. Despite Steven Spielberg ranking as the top filmmaker, Cameron has more blockbusters.

Harrison Ford shines as a villain in What Lies Beneath, showing his potential beyond heroic roles. Despite What Lies Beneath's mixed reviews, Ford's performance as the antagonist was chilling and memorable. Ford has not played a former villain since What Lies Beneath in 2000.
Over the course of his acting career, Harrison Ford has starred in numerous critically acclaimed movies and played many beloved characters, but there is one thing that has been sadly missing from his catalog. Ford's breakthrough in Hollywood came when he starred as Bob Falfa in George Lucas' American Graffiti. Although the 1973 comedy-drama certainly isn't what Ford is most known for, it helped build his relationship with Lucas. Consequently, American Grafitti was a key factor in Ford securing the role of Han Solo in Star Wars in 1977, which was when the actor truly rose to prominence.

An unreleased script by Frank Darabont reveals a hidden connection between Hellboy and Indiana Jones. The crossover involves a reference to Hellboy's true name, "Anung Un Rama," in the unproduced fourth Indy movie script. Both franchises share pulp inspirations and a similar lineage, hinting at a potential crossover in the future.
Hellboy has quite a bit in common with Indiana Jones, so its somewhat surprising that the two characters have never crossed paths on any of their adventures. Yet there is a hidden crossover between the two franchises that fans never got to see, an unproduced movie thats been hidden away on the far corners of the internet like some lost Ark of the Covenant.
The crossover takes place in Frank Darabonts unproduced script for the proposed fourth Indy movie, then titled Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods. The story follows a similar arc to that seen in...

Every actor has a magnum opus accompanied by a few skeletons here and there in their proverbial closet of filmography. For Shia Labeouf, it was one of the Indiana Jones outings that landed at the feet of moviegoers with a dull thud at the time of release.

Labeouf – overcome with a dangerous concoction of frustration and disappointment – made the grave mistake of pillorying the director after the catastrophe of the big-budget feature.
And it just so happened that the director in question was none other than, industry heavyweight & 3-time Oscar winner, Steven Spielberg. Uh-oh.

Emily Blunt is in early talks to star in Steven Spielberg’s next film.
The movie, like all of Spielberg’s productions, is shrouded in secrecy, but it is an “event film,” so think special effects and vast scope. It’s based on a story that Spielberg conceived and boasts a screenplay from David Koepp, who wrote “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Universal Pictures will release the film wide on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Blunt is coming off an Oscar-nominated turn as the alcoholic wife of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” as well as “The Fall Guy,” an action-comedy that was well-received by critics, but failed to ignite at the box office. She’s no stranger to massive productions, having previously starred in the likes of “Edge of Tomorrow” (going toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise) and “Into the Woods.

Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt is reportedly in talks to play one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s next film, due out in 2026.
Having co-starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer last year, Emily Blunt could be about to work with another household name director. According to a new report, she’s in ‘early talks’ to play one of the leads in Steven Spielberg’s currently untitled 2026 film.
According to Deadline, the secretive film will have two lead characters, one of which would most likely be Blunt if the deal’s made.
As we heard last month, Universal and Amblin have set the release date for Spielberg’s mystery film: the 15th May 2026. That’s a similar summer slot to Spielberg’s biggest, most accessible movies, including Jaws (June 1975), E.T: The Extra Terrestrial (June 1982), Jurassic Park (June 1993) and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull (May 2008). Steven Spielberg and George Lucas worked together to develop the highly successful Indiana Jones franchise. But Spielberg has always asserted that Indiana Jones is Lucas’ story first. However, he did take credit for making one small contribution to the franchise.

Spielberg has been very loyal to Lucas when it comes to the Indiana Jones movies. Although a team effort, Lucas initially came up with the idea. And Spielberg simply did his best to bring Lucas’ ideas to life, even if he didn’t agree with them. The filmmaker wasn’t a huge fan of the direction Lucas wanted to take in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull for instance. But he acquiesced to his friend’s instincts.

You can chart Steven Spielberg's evolution as a director by the "Indiana Jones" films. By 1981, the former wunderkind had gotten the wind knocked out of him by the muted reaction to his erratic 1979 burlesque "1941" (which earned him a tsk-tsking from John Wayne) and was hungry for a rebound. Teaming up with his buddy George Lucas, he made "Raiders of the Lost Ark," a rollicking pastiche that has since supplanted the '30s and '40s serials that inspired their action-adventure in our cultural consciousness.
1984's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" saw Spielberg wade further into the horror pool he'd explored two years earlier in "Poltergeist," a suburban nightmare that neither he nor director Tobe Hooper can take full credit for. "Temple of Doom" might just feature some of the most exhilarating pacing and grandest spectacle of the filmmaker's career, but that's difficult to appreciate beneath the film's racial insensitivity and general mean-spiritedness.

Steven Spielberg's new sci-fi movie will be his first summer blockbuster since 2016. The untitled movie also features UFOs, a favorite topic from the director's early years. The movie has a chance to reverse a recent negative box office trend for Spielberg movies.
Steven Spielberg's new movie will revive a trend from his career after a decade. The iconic director, whose early works include the TV movie thriller Duel and the Goldie Hawn-led The Sugarland Express, is best known for blockbuster releases including the iconic movies Raiders of the Lost Ark (the first of the Indiana Jones movies) and Jurassic Park, as well as tentpoles that balance popular and prestige sensibilities such as Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. Over the course of his career, he has been nominated for 23 Oscars, winning three.

Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and the box office is looking grim. The “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa” is on track to score the lowest No. 1 Memorial Day weekend in nearly three decades, since 1998’s “Casper,” with an estimated $31 million take. But traditionally, the holiday weekend is a big one for moviegoing – kids are out of school, adults have three days off and the summer movie season is ready to roll.
For that reason, it feels like a good time to look back at the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend box office openings of all time, dating back to 1996. Now it’s important to note these are Memorial Day weekend openings not Memorial Day weekend box office champions – “The Day After Tomorrow” pulled in over $85 million when it opened in 2004, but the top film at the box office for the holiday weekend was holdover “Shrek 2.”

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is one of the most significant films in Steven Spielberg’s career. The alien film still finds itself in discussions among cinephiles. After its first 1982 release, the film has been re-released multiple times. However, when the movie was re-released in 2002 to mark its 20th Anniversary, Spielberg made some notable edits in the theatrical cut.

The Jaws filmmaker executed several changes in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’s 20th Anniversary re-release. While some scenes were added, many were enhanced to improve the movie’s quality. But Steven Spielberg regretted how he edited the guns out of the film. He believed the change should not have been made as it ruined the movie.

Franchises can die due to weak films that don't resonate with fans, leading to financial struggles and loss of interest. Continuations of classic franchises with lower-quality sequels, like Indiana Jones 4 or Terminator 3, can turn fans away for good. Changes in tone or storytelling, such as with Mission: Impossible II or Fantastic Beasts 2, can alienate fans and harm a franchise.
Franchises often have a shelf life with an expiration date, and it only takes one movie to turn a fanbase away from an expansive franchise. Hollywood is currently in the era of franchises and big IP expansions. Almost every movie that strikes big at the box office belongs to a larger franchise of films, but no franchise lasts forever.
While these film series create large dedicated fanbases, it's difficult to keep viewers engaged and coming back for more. If the series releases a weaker film, or something that feels like a conclusive ending,...

Steven Spielberg’s next film has set a summer 2026 release date, which suggests he’s got something blockbuster-y up his sleeves. More here.
Last month we covered the widely-reported story that emerged online, stating that Steven Spielberg’s next film would be a UFO movie. This, of course, would mark a return to subject matter that has fascinated the directing legend throughout his career. Across films like E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and War Of The Worlds, Steven Spielberg often explored very personal and intimate themes set against the vast backdrop of the infinite and unknowable mysteries of the universe.
The other thing these films all had in common was that they made a lot of money, embellishing Spielberg’s status as a major box office draw. That was a reputation that he first established in 1975 with Jaws, a film that is generally regarded as...

The last time Steven Spielberg brought a film to cinemas, we got the semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age drama The Fabelmans. While he's kept busy as a producer on other things, we've not heard all that much about future directing plans. All that changed today as Universal has announced a new "event movie" from Spielberg scheduled for release in 2026.
Much of the specific details on the film are still being kept quiet – though Variety recently reported that the director has been developing a new take on UFOs as part of his typically hefty To Do list, which means we could be in for a new close encounter.
And behind the scenes, the new project will mark a reunion for Spielberg and David Koepp, who wrote the likes of Jurassic Park, War Of The Worlds and Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, among others.

The king has returned ... and he's bringing a very familiar collaborator along with him. It's been a long, painful year and a half since Steven Spielberg last blessed us with his work in "The Fabelmans" -- look, we'd take a new Spielberg joint every six months if we could -- but there's some light on the horizon once more. One of the most talented and prolific filmmakers in living memory is already looking ahead to his next production, which we now know will hit theaters almost exactly two years from this very moment in time.

Universal Pictures has dated an “untitled event film” directed by Steven Spielberg for a wide release on Friday, May 15, 2026. The story will be by Spielberg and the screenplay by his frequent collaborator David Koepp. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce.
While no further details were shared at present, Variety reported last month that Spielberg’s next project will “likely” be “a UFO film based on his own original idea” and written by Koepp. The May 2026 release is Spielberg’s original idea as written by Koepp, and a Spielberg UFO film would surely be an event film.
When reached by IndieWire, a spokesperson for Universal Pictures declined comment on the UFO detail.
Of course, most Spielberg films are event films, with many written by Koepp, including: “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” (a UFO film!), and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Combined, those...

Steven Spielberg has lined up his next feature film, which will be released in 2026.
Universal Pictures is backing the movie, which will open in theaters on May 15, 2026. It’s unclear what the untitled project — which the studio described as a “new original event film” — is about, though Variety previously reported that Spielberg is working on a UFO story.
David Koepp, whose previous work with the filmmaker includes “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” is writing the script from a story by Spielberg. Kristie Macosko Krieger will produce the film.
Spielberg, who does not need much of an introduction, is Hollywood’s most commercially successful filmmaker, having helmed blockbusters like “Jaws” and “E.T.,” on top of the “Indiana Jones” and “Jurassic Park” franchises. He’s also a three-time Oscar winner for “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan.”
He most recently directed “The Fabelmans” for Universal.

Everyone knows the mongoose is one of nature’s slipperiest animals. Not only can they run at 20 mph, but they’re also resistant to snake venom! Indiana Jones does impact the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark, proving the common theory wrong. The myth that Indiana Jones did nothing to affect the plot is based on hypothetical events. Indy's relentless meddling drives the plot, impacting the narrative and preventing the Nazis from harnessing the Ark's power.
