Creating an original musical in the year 2024 is an achievement in its own right, even if it’s only part of the reason why Joshua Oppenheimer’s new narrative feature “The End” is so audacious. Audiences seem to flock to new musicals like “Wonka” and “Mean Girls” because they offer an only slight alteration on a previously existing work of intellectual property that they are already familiar with, and even this year’s divisive “Emilia Pérez” has ostensibly sold itself on being a “musical for people that hate musicals.” If there’s anything that “The End” does that is most worthy of admiration, it’s that Oppenheimer does not insert a hint of derisiveness or irony within his razzle dazzle, Golden Age style musical. If it weren’t for the very specific correlations made to recent events in world history, “The End” could have feasibly have been released in the...

Born in New York City in 1986, Lindsay Lohan began her performance ventures at the tender age of three as a Ford model, quickly becoming one of the most successful child models in the industry. Her early work included over 60 television commercials, including a notable Jell-o spot with Bill Cosby – an association that now carries uncomfortable undertones, given subsequent revelations about Cosby’s conduct.
However, it was in feature films that Lohan would truly shine. Her breakthrough came in 1998 with Disney’s remake of The Parent Trap, where, at age 11, she masterfully played dual roles as separated twin sisters. The performance showed the world not only her natural charm but also her remarkable technical skill for such a young actor, earning critical acclaim and establishing her as a rising star. The early 2000s marked Lohan’s ascension to Hollywood royalty. Her starring role in 2003’s Freaky Friday opposite Jamie Lee Curtis...

Today's contender for least surprising news is that Universal is still begging Robert Zemeckis for another Back To The Future, despite the fact that he's on record that it won't happen until he and co-writer Bob Gale are dead. But in a Hollywood thirsty for "established IP," the studio can't...

Well, it’s often said that when a woman changes her hairstyle, she’s on the verge of a significant transformation; but what about the women who simply change their hair without ever cutting it? Wigs have been the unsung heroes of the film and television industry for decades, helping actors slip into character while keeping the audience entranced. Yet, as time has passed, our relationship with these hairpieces has taken an unexpected turn. Once seamlessly woven into the fabric of storytelling, today’s wigs often stand out like a sore thumb. So, what gives?

2006’s The Barbie Diaries was one of my favorite Barbie movies ever, despite being derivative of everything of the era, especially Mean Girls. Watching Time Cut had me feeling the same way, but I suppose it didn’t evoke as much of a positive reaction as the other one, and I’ll tell you why. Time Cut follows Lucy, a high schooler whose sister was murdered before she was born. Lucy finds herself wondering what it would’ve been like with her sister alive, only to learn about it when she accidentally time travels to a few days before her sister’s death. Look, the premise is madly intriguing, and that’s also why it’s a difficult film to make. I found myself circling back to the idea of a “wholesome” slasher, a “feel good” horror. Doesn’t make sense at all, yet it makes complete sense, no? Netflix...

Lacey Chabert has been part of the Hallmark Channel’s “old talent” roster for years. That shouldn’t be a bad thing.
Though her acting career has spanned decades, she is best known for Mean Girls. However, her list of roles on television, film, and voice acting in animation and games is nothing short of intimidating.
She is also only 42 years old. That’s not really “old” by any realistic metric.
So why did an executive for the Hallmark Channel allegedly push for the replacement of her and other “old talent” on the network’s projects?

According to a report by People, court documents reveal that 79-year-old Penny Perry, a former casting director for Hallmark, filed a complaint against multiple execs.

Back in 1968, George A. Romero made his feature directorial debut with one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Night of the Living Dead – and while doing so, he also introduced the world to flesh-eating ghouls that became a new definition for the world “zombie.” Romero, who passed away in 2017, went on to make several more zombie movies over the decades… and recently, his daughter Tina Romero revealed that she’s making her own feature directorial debut with a zombie movie called Queens of the Dead. Deadline reports that Charades has acquired the international sales rights to the project – and while doing so, they unveiled the first image from the film! You can check it out in this article.

Two exes dating siblings and spending the holidays together... what could go wrong? Well, according to the newly released Our Little Secret trailer, everything that could go wrong will go wrong.
Lindsay Lohan headlines the Netflix original Christmas romantic comedy as Avery, who spends the holidays with her boyfriend Cameron (Jon Rudnitsky). However, once she begins to meet his family, she discovers that her boyfriend's sister is dating her ex-boyfriend, Logan (Ian Harding). In order to avoid causing drama, Avery and Logan decide to keep their past a secret.
As the trailer reveals, 10 years prior to dating siblings, Logan had gotten down on one knee and proposed to Avery. Unfortunately for him, she turned down his proposal in front of a whole crowd. More than likely, that's where their relationship turned sour and caused them to be "resentful exes," as the movie's synopsis teases. An awkward proposal will definitely do that!

Julian Casablancas and his band The Voidz stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday (October 23rd) to perform “Square Wave” and “7 Horses,” two songs from their new album Like All Before You. Watch the performances below.
Looking as Voidz-y as ever, Casablancas strutted around the stage in a leather vest and a singular glove while he bathed himself in Auto-Tune. There’s nothing wrong with a button nose and two eyes made out of coal, but the upcoming holiday romcom Hot Frosty is more concerned with the iconic snowman’s other body parts.
Namely, his six-pack abs.
(And yes, we’re resisting the urge to make a corncob pipe joke.)
(Netflix)
In recent years, Lacey Chabert’s name has become synonymous with Hallmark.
But her newest holiday jaunt is a Netflix production, which means she’s free to be a little more risque than usual.
And that’s a very good thing, as you want to be free to swing for the fences when you’re making a movie in which a character from a kids’ song transforms into a shredded himbo with a penchant for public nudity.
Thankfully, from the looks of the trailer, this movie is fully aware of the absurdity of its premise and leans into it...

There’s been a strange phenomenon in Hollywood of late – films that are song-and-dance musicals, paired with marketing that seems designed to hide that very fact. The song-packed Wonka wasn’t advertised as such; the Mean Girls musical adaptation was soundtracked by Olivia Rodrigo songs in its trailers rather than its own numbers; even Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga spent the Joker: Folie À Deux promo tour claiming the film isn’t a musical. And while that phenomenon isn’t exactly new (audiences coming to Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd back in 2007 weren’t informed by the trailers that it was a full-on Stephen Sondheim adaptation), it seems particularly prevalent today.
One film that’s been more overt about its status as a Broadway adaptation is Jon M. Chu’s two-part take on Wicked. If early teasers were oddly song-lite, more recent trailers are clearer about it being a musical.

Jerry Ciccoritti directs the Christmas romantic-comedy feature that hits the streaming service on Nov. 13, just in time for the holiday season. Rounding out the cast are Dustin Milligan, Katy Mixon, Lauren Holly, Joe Lo Truglio, Craig Robinson and Chrishell Stause.
Hot Frosty follows widow Kathy (Chabert), who is going through a rough stretch until she uses a magical scarf to bring attractive snowman Jack (Milligan) to life. The pair begin to fall for each other but have limited time before he starts to melt.
“Clearly, you’ve been doing your push-ups,” Chabert tells the well-toned snowman before his transformation.
Later, Jack (Milligan) tells a neighbor, “I’ve never been on a date before. I need your help with Kathy.”

Within minutes of sitting down with each other at Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, Reneé Rapp and Cynthia Erivo realize that they’re both Capricorns. They gush over how cosmic this meeting is, after years of mutual admiration from afar. “Now it all makes sense!” Erivo says. “A Capricorn is someone who knows their own self and what they want, what they will stand for, and what they will not. It’s always really fun and refreshing to see.” Rapp agrees: “You’re, verbatim, exactly the same way.

Jenna Fischer teared up as she reflected on her journey to being breast cancer-free just two weeks after sharing her initial health news.
“I never had a big shave-your-head moment,” Fischer told “The Today Show” host Hoda Kotb in a special interview segment on Monday. She explained that losing her hair and vomiting were some of the fears she had going into chemotherapy. “I did not throw up, but I did lose my hair … I would kind of do a real elaborate combover.”
On Oct. 8, the “Office” actress shared that she was cancer-free after being diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive Breast Cancer, which she learned about through a regular checkup.
“I went in for my routine mammogram. It’s that annoying appointment that I’d been putting off, and then three weeks later, they said, ‘There were a few spots that are difficult to see; you have dense tissue. We...

While art doesn’t always require an audience, Square Enix’s choice-driven adventure game Life is Strange quickly found a home among young gamers (especially in the queer community) with an affinity for indie music and quirky sci-fi adventures thematically akin to Twin Peaks. Inspirations aside, Life is Strange has found longevity of its own, and since 2015 has blossomed beyond the scope of its initial cast of colorful, preppy characters with successful sequels highlighting America’s cultural diaspora.

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

I’m back! Well, not quite but working towards it. We're going to do an 80s theme in early November, okay? But let’s start with a question and a list to prove that I have actually been watching movies (and am alive) though I’ve rarely been writing and miss it terribly.
Has it been a good, bad, or ugly year for the always threatened Movie Musical genre?
The greatest of all movie genres is always threatened with extinction but it's also resilient and still with us almost a century after its debut. The year isn't over so the initial bolded question is premature. Mean Girls was a dud early in the year and the highly anticipated Joker Folie A Deux is currently flopping which serves it right for sidelining Lady Gaga (of all people) and being so uncomfortable about calling itself a musical. But we've...

Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcom "Family Guy" debuted in 1999 as, effectively, a crass redux of "The Simpsons." This was a telling development in popular culture, as "The Simpsons," which debuted a full decade earlier, was seen as the crass redux of most traditional sitcoms. The below-average boob Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta) was replaced by the boorish moron Peter Griffin (MacFarlane). "The Simpsons" often presented juvenile humor, but was clearly made by smart people who liked to slip high-end literary and scientific references into their scripts. "Family Guy," in contrast, well full-bore fratboy, leaning heavily into tasteless (and darkly funny) jokes about sexual assault, racism, and celebrity culture. "Family Guy" pivoted on pop culture references, specifically remembered by those born in the mid-1970s.
"Family Guy" also aged up its child characters. On "The Simpsons," Bart (Nancy Cartwright) and Lisa (Yeardley Smith) were 10 and 8 respectively. On "Family Guy," Chris (Seth Green...

After playing a dangerous lottery game with John Cena and Awkwafina for the action comedy Jackpot!, Paul Feig could tackle the upcoming Lionsgate feature The Housemaid, starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried about family secrets coming to light. Sweeney and Seyfried are in final negotiations to join the Hidden Pictures/Feigco Entertainment thriller written by Rebecca Sonnenshine, based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden.
In addition to their starring roles, Sweeney and Seyfried executive produce alongside Alex Young and McFadden. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman will produce.
Here is the official logline for The Housemaid courtesy of Lionsgate:
In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling young woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple… but soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.
“I’m thrilled to have The Housemaid join our upcoming slate.
