It’s a new year and there are already a host of incredible physical media releases from some of our favorite labels. It really is an embarrassment of riches and given what has been previewed for the next few months, we’ll be eating very well indeed.
But let’s get into the very best home video releases of January 2025!
New Line Cinema “Seven” 4K
2025 is finally the year that some of David Fincher’s masterpieces make their way to 4K. “Fight Club” is in the works for later this year and “Panic Room” and “The Social Network” (which had previously only been available in one of the ultra-expensive Columbia Pictures box sets) are hitting in February. “Seven,” whose new 4K transfer was previewed at the TCM Festival last year, finally makes its way to home video. And while some have taken issue with the new image, which saw Fincher...

In the 1990s, the Muppets began a trend that, sadly, was interrupted. In 1992, the troupe of puppets starred in "The Muppet Christmas Carol," which cast Muppet players as characters in Charles Dickens' immortal Christmas story. The Muppets followed that with the excellent "Muppet Treasure Island" in 1996, which took a similar tack; the Muppets were mere actors putting on their own modern production of a literary classic. This was a clever use of the Muppets, and there was every reason to believe they would continue with high-end literary adaptations.
Sadly, the trend ended in 1999 with the release of the lackluster "Muppets from Space," the troupe's last theatrical feature film for 12 years.
In the intervening span, though, there was one additional visit to the world of literature. In 2005, ABC aired the TV movie "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," starring Ashanti as Dorothy Gale. Kermit the Frog played the Scarecrow, Gonzo played the Tin Woodman,...

After annihilating a bevy of assassins including Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox), O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), her Crazy 88s and her advisor Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus) in a veritable tsunami of blood in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, The Bride (Uma Thurman) goes on to the other names on her list. Bud (Michael Madsen), Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah), and the most evil of them all, their leader Bill (David Carradine). Kill Bill: Vol. 2 has more character development and backstory than Vol. 1, though Tarantino did spend a good amount of time on O-Ren Ishii’s past via an animated segment, which no doubt saved the production a few million dollars. For example, both Bud and Bill are brothers and murdering bastards but they have a gentler...

As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.
Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.
Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.
But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

Say goodbye to those New Year greetings and memes, because February is almost here. Time to really sink our teeth into 2025 and how it’ll look, and of course that means beefing up your watchlist. As always the libraries of Hulu and Disney+ (and multiple available bundles) are here to help, with new shows and movies (both family friendly and… a little unfriendly) available to stream.
Along with ongoing episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Disney+ will debut all of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” Season 2 and plenty of other great titles for young viewers. “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” special will recapture the magic of a live performance, and “Harlem Ice” follows a girls’ figure skating team through their competitive season.

The vibes on your media shelves are about to get very cool, as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and Jackie Brown will all receive 4K Ultra HD SteelBook releases on January 21st, 2025.
The third and “fourth” films made by Tarantino represent the director truly coming into his stride as an auteur. Jackie Brown, adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch, featured Pam Grier as a flight attendant drawn into a criminal enterprise. It was a career-revitalizing role for Grier, alongside an ensemble cast including Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro.
The Kill Bill saga featured Tarantino paying homage to some of his favorite genres, including martial arts movies, blaxploitation, spaghetti westerns, and more. Uma Thurman stars as The Bride (aka Beatrix Kiddo), a woman out for revenge after losing everything on her wedding day. The two-volume epic also starred Lucy Liu,...

Mobile phones were created to make our lives easier but somehow, we have become slaves to them. Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve agrees. As one of the hottest directors right now, he has certain rules he expects his cast and crew members to follow and there is one rule he absolutely swears by – ‘Say No to Cell Phones.’ As far as he is concerned, distractions like scrolling through social media undermine the focus required to deliver a masterpiece. He made the Dune films; he knows what he is talking about!

This “detox” from mobile phones seems to have become a hallmark of the filmmaking process in Hollywood and Denis Villeneuve isn’t the only director who has forbidden his people from doomscrolling on his set.

Ryan Reynolds got buried alive in a shallow grave in the underrated 2010 thriller Buried, and it’s the same exact plot as the CSI episode that was guest-directed by Quentin Tarantino. Since Reynolds’ last few roles have been snarky and self-aware, there’s a misconception that Deadpool is the only character he’s capable of playing. But in Buried, he gave a straightforward dramatic performance as an American truck driver buried in a wooden coffin with a Zippo lighter and a cell phone in the Iraqi desert.
Reynolds gave one of his best performances in Buried. The movie takes place entirely within the coffin and the only other actors speak to Reynolds over the phone, so he has to carry the entire film on his shoulders, and he does so ably. He gets the audience swept up in this man’s desperate attempts to be found and rescued with the...

For better or worse, sequels form an intrinsic element of cinema's landscape. Whether the movie in question happens to be the continuation of a modern film series or the revival of an old and seemingly dead franchise, sequels are here to stay. This state of affairs has had mixed results, with the more detrimental outcomes including franchises ruined by unnecessary sequels to highly anticipated sequels that became major flops despite high expectations. There's also an argument to be made that many are born out of financial motivation, as opposed to a genuine desire to produce a quality film.
In any case, it's fortunate that several standout examples have effortlessly sidestepped the pitfalls associated with the worst sequels of all time, producing an inspired continuation of where the story last left off that rivals or even surpasses the original in terms of quality. It's a trademark of some of the greatest...

The best Kill Bill quotes are powerful echoes of the kung fu revenge films and spaghetti westerns that inspired Quentin Tarantino's beloved, bloody duology. Loaded with action, tons of laughs, excessive violence, and Tarantino's signature dialogue, Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 are widely regarded as two of the eccentric director's best movies. These movies tell the story of The Bride, the now-iconic protagonist who sliced her way toward killing the titular Bill, claiming revenge on her former crew and master.
Though the duology was short-lived, and it remains unclear whether Tarantino will make Kill Bill 3, the Kill Bill movies managed to seamlessly blend genre and styles while maintaining Tarantino's brilliant writing style that led to many memorable lines. Along with the unstoppable Bride at the center of it all, there was a collection of standout characters in the Kill Bill movies, delivering dramatic, funny,...

A martial arts and katana expert explains what Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Volume 1 gets wrong in one fight scene and demonstrates the correct technique. Released in 2003, Tarantino's first Kill Bill film marked his follow-up to Jackie Brown (1997). Starring Uma Thurman in the lead role as The Bride, the action movie follows a former assassin who seeks revenge against the team of assassins who left her for dead, with numerous over-the-top action sequences featured throughout the film's runtime.
In a recent video for Insider, Seki Nobuhide Sensei analyzes The Bride's fight against Gogo Yubari in Kill Bill, revealing that her opponent makes a few critical mistakes when it comes to using her weapon, an iron ball on the end of a chain.
Seki reveals that, not only is the iron ball too large to be practical, but the fighting techniques used in the scene are less effective than they could be.

Writer and director Quentin Tarantino is a well-known true-blue cinephile, a deeply devoted fan of films from a variety of genres and eras. He's a fan of everything from sleazy grindhouse exploitation films to classic westerns like the films of Howard Hawks, and he wears his influences loudly and proudly in his own films. So when asked about his favorite films of all time, he has different answers depending on how he feels. There is one movie that he claims to always include in his favorites, however, and he's been pretty effusive about his love for it on more than one occasion.
In an interview with The Talks, Tarantino shared his favorite three films (at that particular moment) and explained that even though two of his top three might shuffle around, he will always feel the need to share his love for the Sergio Leone spaghetti western "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in Quentin Tarantino’s case, it seems a foot might be worth even more. The director’s alleged love for feet is no secret—it’s like a cherry on top of his already flamboyant directorial style. From the iconic ‘wiggle your big toe’ moment in Kill Bill to those foot massages in Pulp Fiction, the director, 61, has turned foot shots into a cinematic trademark.

Quentin Tarantino has always been one to wear his cinematic influences on his sleeve, and the Kill Bill duology is certainly no exception. The classic revenge tale is a love letter to various types of films, with the influence of Westerns like The Searchers and classic exploitation films of the 70s easy to spot throughout both volumes. However, above all else, Kill Bill is Tarantino's take on a martial arts movie, with a few titles in particular being heavily referenced by the two-part film.
There are several ways in which both Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2 clearly homage some of Quentin Tarantino's favorite martial arts films. Most of the time, stylistic influences in the shot composition and art direction of the film are dead ringers for famous kung fu movies. In other instances, entire story elements and even straight-up named characters are lifted from standout entries in the genre.

Michael Madsen was arrested in Malibu on Saturday morning on charges of domestic battery following “a disagreement between” the actor and his wife, DeAnna Madsen.
Authorities based at the Malibu/Lost Hill Sheriff’s Station responded to a call shortly after midnight on Aug. 17. The 66-year-old actor was arrested for a domestic battery misdemeanor under Penal Code 243(e)(1), meaning force or violence was allegedly used against a cohabitant. The actor was booked at the Station at 1:40 a.m.
“It was a disagreement between Michael and his wife, which we hope resolves positively for them both,” a representative for Madsen said in a statement to Variety. Madsen is no longer in custody after posting a $20,000 bond.

Gordon Liu's iconic roles in kung fu epics showcase his traditional kung fu styles and choreography. The variety of fight scenes in Legendary Weapons of China makes it a standout film for Liu. Kill Bill Vol. 2 ties back to Liu's previous projects, showcasing his kung fu skills on a larger scale.
Gordon Liu has one of the most impressive filmographies of any kung fu movie star, with multiple iconic titles to his name. A Chinese actor and martial artist, Gordon Liu studied real kung fu from a young age, eventually getting his big break in the film industry thanks to a production company owned by the famous Shaw brothers. At the 2004 Grammy Awards, all eyes were on industry heavyweight Quentin Tarantino and his “Kill Bill Vol. 2” soundtrack – but it was an unknown indie film that walked away with the trophy. In a major upset, Zach Braff’s directorial debut “Garden State” clinched the award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, besting Tarantino’s widely presumed frontrunner.
Braff, then best known as J.D. on the NBC comedy “Scrubs,” made “Garden State” for just under $3 million. Yet its eclectic soundtrack, featuring tracks from The Shins, Coldplay, and Iron & Wine, became a massive commercial success – selling over 1.3 million copies and going platinum. Still, winning against Tarantino seemed impossible according to Braff. “I certainly didn’t think there would ever be a chance where I would beat Quentin Tarantino at anything,” he admitted.
When presenters announced “Garden State” as the winner, Braff could hardly believe it. “I remember being...

Zach Braff told The Ringer as part of a recent oral history on the iconic soundtrack to his 2004 comedy-drama “Garden State” that Quentin Tarantino approached him and jokingly cursed him off when Braff’s film won the Grammy Award for best compilation soundtrack for visual media over Tarantino’s “Kill Bill Vol. 2.”
“I was up against Quentin Tarantino. I certainly didn’t think there would ever be a chance where I would beat Quentin Tarantino at anything,” Braff said. “My father wanted to come, and I was like, ‘Dad, there’s no way I’m gonna win a Grammy. Tarantino is winning the Grammy, and you’re wasting your trip from Jersey out here.’ And then we fucking won! I couldn’t believe it.”
Braff continued, “Tarantino jokingly said, ‘You stole my fucking Grammy, man!’ and then gave me a big smile and a hug. He was super sweet and supportive.

Garden State was released in theaters on July 28, 2004, telling the offbeat story about a struggling actor who finds love and a new lease on life after returning to his hometown following his mother’s death.
The romantic dramedy, which currently boasts an 86 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed more than $35 million at the worldwide box office and won best first feature at the 2005 Independent Spirit Awards. Its acclaimed soundtrack also made fans flock straight from the cinema to the nearest record store, with the album later beating Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Shrek 2 for the Grammy for best compilation soundtrack album.
Despite being helmed by and starring Zach Braff, who was in the midst of becoming a major TV star on Scrubs, and starring Natalie Portman, Garden State faced numerous roadblocks. It struggled to secure financing and was ultimately made with a constrained budget of $2.5 million.

The Garden State soundtrack was an insanely popular compilation with the likes of The Shins, Coldplay, Iron & Wine, and more. So championed it was that you might be surprised to learn that it actually won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. Also up that year was Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 2, whose selection of Johnny Cash, Shivaree and Ennio Morricone had to “let go” of the gold to Zach Braff’s jukebox.
Zach Braff remembered that Quentin Tarantino had a far better attitude about Kill Bill losing out to Garden State than he did Pulp Fiction falling to Forrest Gump. As he told The Ringer, “Tarantino jokingly said, ‘You stole my f*cking Grammy, man,’ and then gave me a big smile and a hug. He was super sweet and supportive. I was the kind of film-school kid that would have put a Reservoir Dogs poster on my wall.

Zach Braff never thought he’d beat out Quentin Tarantino at any awards show, let alone the Grammys.

Kill Bill Vol. 2 pays homage to Westerns like The Searchers, showcasing Quentin Tarantino's love for revenge-filled narratives. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope draws inspiration from The Searchers, echoing themes of rescue and vengeance seen in the Western classic. Pixar's A Bug's Life cleverly mirrors Westerns like The Magnificent Seven and Three Amigos, showcasing the genre's influence on unlikely animated films.
As such an iconic and uniquely American genre, Western movies have inspired a high number of seemingly unrelated films. Pulp Fiction turned 30 this year and fans love the film even more when they hear the rare behind-the-scenes stories from the Quentin Tarantino classic. Well, here’s one that most fans might have missed — John Travolta was never the first choice for the role of Vincent Vega. Tarantino had another actor in mind who worked with him in his 1992 film, Reservoir Dogs.

Michael Madsen is a frequent collaborator on Tarantino films. The Quentin Tarantino feet trend is a famous aspect of his work, sparking dialogue among audiences and critics. Tarantino's foot fixation in films isn't just about narrative or aesthetics, but rather a creative choice by the director. Despite controversy surrounding his conduct, the foot fetish in Tarantino's work hasn't affected his professional relationships.
The Quentin Tarantino feet trend is now a famous aspect of the filmmaker's work. There are several elements that make Tarantino's movies so unique from their level and style of violence to the dialogue and multiple pop culture references, to the frequent shots of feet (especially womens feet). The trend has been noticed in several of Tarantino's films and was brought up once again following the release of his most recent movie, Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. Some have suggested it is Tarantino living out his personal foot fetish through his movies.

We’re back to BOOsics on this week’s episode of Nightmare on Film Street, talking about horny ghosts, drunk vacationers, and Jennifer Tilly! Join your horror hosts Jon & Kim as they sit down for a sober discussion about the ins and outs of having sex with a ghost, as depicted in the unsurprisingly underseen 80s sex comedy High Spirits (1988).

High Spirits is an unhinged tale of a Hotel owner trying desperately to save the family castle by pretending that it’s haunted. Thelma & Louise, a landmark feminist film, balances progressive elements with lively adventure. Geena Davis believes the movie should never be remade due to its cultural impact and unique place in cinematic history. The film's portrayal of female empowerment and defiance of traditional gender roles inspired cinema as a whole.
Geena Davis explains why Thelma & Louise should not ever get a remake. Directed by Ridley Scott with a script written by Callie Khouri, the 1991 crime drama follows the two titular friends, a homemaker and a waitress, who embark on a road trip that takes an unexpected turn when they commit a crime and are pursued by police. Besides Davis, the cast includes Oscar winner Susan Sarandon, Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel, Kill Bill: Volume 2's Michael Madsen, Happy Gilmore's Christopher McDonald, Groundhog Day's Stephen Tobolowsky, and two-time Oscar winner Brad Pitt in one of his first major roles.

Twenty years ago, Kill Bill: Vol. 2 made quite the splash when it reached theaters. Quentin Tarantino movies always do. Some folks basked in its trenchant, loquacious splendor, marveling at how the most grandiose and blood-soaked depiction of vengeance yet in a Qt joint could ultimately boil down to a custody dispute between two parents sitting across a table. Others criticized its grittier, more intimate concerns as a letdown following the severed-head glory of Kill Bill: Vol 1… and, finally, there were even those who simply couldn’t get over that amusingly cynical thesis about Superman which the titular Bill drops right before the end of the flick.
If you don’t recall, the scene comes after David Carradine’s antagonist tranquilized Beatrix Kiddo, aka the Bride (Uma Thurman), with enough drugs to force her to listen to a long conversation. But then in Tarantino movies, they’re all long conversations.

Val Kilmer left no stones unturned when he wrote his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, which was released in 2020. With a title ripped off from one of his famous lines in Tombstone, the book was a brutally frank, tell-all tale of Kilmer’s life, including his love, loss, and regret. In one of his confessions in the book, the Batman Forever actor revealed his crush on co-star Angelina Jolie.

Interestingly, Kilmer wanted a kissing scene with Jolie in the film and even jokingly told director Oliver Stone about it.

Uma Thurman has been to Cannes more times than she can remember, either to pledge support for the glamorous annual charity event amfAR or with films as diverse as the genteel Merchant-Ivory period film The Golden Bowl (2000) and Quentin Tarantino’s ultraviolent Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), in which she reprised her badass role as The Bride. The film that propelled her to stardom, Pulp Fiction, won the Palme d’Or there, and Thurman hasn’t forgotten what it did for her. This year, she’s back with Paul Schrader’s Oh, Canada, the kind of smart, character-based indie on which she earned her spurs.
Deadline: How did you get involved with Oh, Canada?
Uma Thurman: Really, I just got the call through my agents to read a Paul Schrader script and meet with him. I’m so glad I did. I love Paul Schrader.
Deadline: Did you know him already?...

Kevin Costner would often like to imagine himself as a one-man army, if possible, who is capable of handling almost every single hurdle and blockade thrown in his direction with utmost precision and decisiveness. This character trait may also be the reason why the Hollywood actor makes choices bold enough to surpass even Quentin Tarantino when it comes to sequel treatment in films.

Where one might look to find Kill Bill Vol. 2, Jaws 2, and Back to the Future Part II, Kevin Costner stands firm on the prospect of sequels insomuch that he would not even dare to touch his Oscar-winning property, Dances With Wolves, that he himself directed, produced, and starred in.
In hindsight, perhaps sticking by this one rule has made Costner one of the most substantial and enduring stars to have walked the Hollywood red carpet,...

Lynda Carter is paying tribute and honoring the late Jeannie Epper, the Wonder Woman stunt performer.
Epper died on Sunday at the age of 83. She performed stunts in the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series and films like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Kill Bill: Vol. 2.
“I have a lot to say about Jeannie Epper. Most of all, I loved her. I always felt that we understood and appreciated one another,” Carter wrote in a message posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “After all, it was the 70s. We were united in the way that women had to be in order to thrive in a man’s world, through mutual respect, intellect and collaboration.”
Carter continued, “Jeannie was a vanguard who paved the way for all other stuntwomen who came after. Just as Diana was Wonder Woman, Jeannie Epper was also a Wonder Woman.

Quentin Tarantino does not view Kill Bill as two separate films. That should be acknowledged upfront as fair. After all, it is this detail which allows Tarantino the ability to claim Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as his ninth instead of 10th film (thereby delaying any obligatory early retirements). And to be sure, Tarantino shot Kill Bill as one epic vision that was only encouraged to be broken up by, ahem, Harvey Weinstein while Tarantino was finishing up principal photography.
So while the story was released as Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, they’re two sides of the same tale. Be that as it may, there’s no denying that they’re two incredibly different sides. Whether a creative choice made in post-production after realizing he had hours more of running time to play with, or because the filmmaker was already at his most indulgent...

Quentin Tarantino has scrapped The Movie Critic, which was supposed to be his 10th and final movie as a film director. Brad Pitt reprising his role as Cliff Booth in The Movie Critic made Tarantino's now-scrapped final movie a sequel of sorts to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which would have suffered without Leonardo DiCaprio returning as Rick Dalton. The chances of Leonardo DiCaprio returning as Rick Dalton in The Movie Critic were very low given his reluctance to star in sequels.
Before it was scrapped, Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood sequel, The Movie Critic, was already doomed. Set in Los Angeles in 1977, Tarantino's The Movie Critic was going to be based on a real-life film critic who wrote reviews in a porn magazine. Though Tom Cruise was rumored to be starring, the only actor confirmed to be cast in The Movie Critic was Brad Pitt,...

April 25, 2024 – A trio of stellar actors give voice to the featured members of the Dickens family as Academy Award winner Kenneth Branagh portrays Charles Dickens, Oscar nominee Uma Thurman plays Catherine Dickens and Golden Globe nominee Roman Griffin Davis gives life to Walter Dickens in Mofac Animation’s upcoming The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
Renowned for his big screen adaptations of William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie tales, Branagh changes gears to portray one of the greatest authors of the ages for The King of Kings. As Charles Dickens, Branagh portrays a man conflicted between his burgeoning career and his role as father to the Dickens clan and, in particular, his youngest son Walter (Davis). It’s his wife, Catherine Dickens, brought to animated life by Thurman with an even balance...

In “Boy Kills World,” Bill Skarsgård has burning eyes and model cheekbones, sinewy arms popping out of a dirty red athletic vest, and a feral pout that makes him look like Jean-Claude Van Damme crossed with Lou Reed. He plays a deaf-mute avenger, known only as Boy, who kills people in insanely violent ways. Yet through it all, the character retains his innocence. He’s a wounded wild child in a man’s body.
Raised in a mountain hideaway by a martial-arts trainer and resistance fighter called the Shaman (Yayan Ruhian), who may remind you, at first, of the Zen master in “Kill Bill: Volume 2,” Boy had his past taken away from him by a vicious totalitarian regime. During the Culling, an annual ritual where law and order is maintained by having criminals confront each other in a state-sanctioned televised death match, Boy saw his little sister, Mina (Quinn Copeland...

Samuel L. Jackson is an acting legend who has starred in numerous movies of all genres. Among his major movies are School Daze (1988), Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Oldboy (2013), and Chi-Raq (2015), Tarantino’s films Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004), Django Unchained (2012), and The Hateful Eight (2015), but he also has two extremely popular roles in his filmography – that of Nick Fury in the MCU, as well as that of Mace Windu in the Star Wars franchise.
We know that Mace Windu died in The Revenge of the Sith, but the character had already been a fan favorite by that moment and since then, there have been numerous calls for Windu to return to the series, implying that the character did not die during the fated battle against Palpatine. Samuel L. Jackson was recently asked about it and he made his opinion on the matter quite clear.
