It’s a new year and there are already a host of incredible physical media releases from some of our favorite labels. It really is an embarrassment of riches and given what has been previewed for the next few months, we’ll be eating very well indeed.

But let’s get into the very best home video releases of January 2025!

New Line Cinema “Seven” 4K

2025 is finally the year that some of David Fincher’s masterpieces make their way to 4K. “Fight Club” is in the works for later this year and “Panic Room” and “The Social Network” (which had previously only been available in one of the ultra-expensive Columbia Pictures box sets) are hitting in February. “Seven,” whose new 4K transfer was previewed at the TCM Festival last year, finally makes its way to home video. In the 1990s, the Muppets began a trend that, sadly, was interrupted. In 1992, the troupe of puppets starred in "The Muppet Christmas Carol," which cast Muppet players as characters in Charles Dickens' immortal Christmas story. The Muppets followed that with the excellent "Muppet Treasure Island" in 1996, which took a similar tack; the Muppets were mere actors putting on their own modern production of a literary classic. This was a clever use of the Muppets, and there was every reason to believe they would continue with high-end literary adaptations.

Sadly, the trend ended in 1999 with the release of the lackluster "Muppets from Space," the troupe's last theatrical feature film for 12 years.

In the intervening span, though, there was one additional visit to the world of literature. In 2005, ABC aired the TV movie "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz," starring Ashanti as Dorothy Gale. Kermit the Frog played the Scarecrow, Gonzo played the Tin Woodman,...

After annihilating a bevy of assassins including Vernita Green (Vivica A. Fox), O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu), her Crazy 88s and her advisor Sofie Fatale (Julie Dreyfus) in a veritable tsunami of blood in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, The Bride (Uma Thurman) goes on to the other names on her list. Bud (Michael Madsen), Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah), and the most evil of them all, their leader Bill (David Carradine). Kill Bill: Vol. 2 has more character development and backstory than Vol. 1, though Tarantino did spend a good amount of time on O-Ren Ishii’s past via an animated segment, which no doubt saved the production a few million dollars. As January wraps up, Hulu is keeping the momentum going with an impressive lineup of new titles next month. Whether you’re into movies, TV shows, or both, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout February.

Hulu is starting strong with over 60 new titles arriving on February 1 alone. Some standout additions include Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2, as well as all four seasons of the classic ’90s drama New York Undercover.

Reality TV fans will also have something to look forward to with the season six premiere of The Kardashians.

But as exciting as the new arrivals are, there’s always the bittersweet reality that some beloved titles are leaving. In February, Hulu will only be removing movies, so TV lovers can breathe easy. However, the list of departing films includes some good titles, like Titane (2021) and Spencer (2021), which earned Kristen Stewart an Oscar nomination.

Say goodbye to those New Year greetings and memes, because February is almost here. Time to really sink our teeth into 2025 and how it’ll look, and of course that means beefing up your watchlist. As always the libraries of Hulu and Disney+ (and multiple available bundles) are here to help, with new shows and movies (both family friendly and… a little unfriendly) available to stream.

Along with ongoing episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man,” Disney+ will debut all of “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” Season 2 and plenty of other great titles for young viewers. “The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl” special will recapture the magic of a live performance, and “Harlem Ice” follows a girls’ figure skating team through their competitive season.

Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, and his Kill Bill films, are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this March. More here.

The work of Quentin Tarantino is decently represented on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format, and after the releases we’re talking about here, there’s only Death Proof, Four Rooms, Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight that are going to be missing.

That’s because at the end of March, we get the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debuts of Jackie Brown, Kill Bill Vol 1 and Kill Bill Vol 2. All three are coming our way courtesy of Lionsgate, and all three now have a UK release date of 31st March 2025.

The vibes on your media shelves are about to get very cool, as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 1, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and Jackie Brown will all receive 4K Ultra HD SteelBook releases on January 21st, 2025.

The third and “fourth” films made by Tarantino represent the director truly coming into his stride as an auteur. Jackie Brown, adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch, featured Pam Grier as a flight attendant drawn into a criminal enterprise. For better or worse, sequels form an intrinsic element of cinema's landscape. Whether the movie in question happens to be the continuation of a modern film series or the revival of an old and seemingly dead franchise, sequels are here to stay. This state of affairs has had mixed results, with the more detrimental outcomes including franchises ruined by unnecessary sequels to highly anticipated sequels that became major flops despite high expectations. In partnership with Lionsgate, the free, ad-supported channel will launch Dec. 10 on The Roku Channel. It will feature 50 Cent’s personal favorite films and TV series drawn from Lionsgate’s library of 20,000-plus titles, including “The Expendables,” “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” “Rambo” and a handful of movies starring the rapper himself. The 50 Cent Action Channel will also run episodes of “Power,” the drama series executive produced by 50 Cent that spawned the Power Universe.

Quentin Tarantino has always been one to wear his cinematic influences on his sleeve, and the Kill Bill duology is certainly no exception. The classic revenge tale is a love letter to various types of films, with the influence of Westerns like The Searchers and classic exploitation films of the 70s easy to spot throughout both volumes. However, above all else, Kill Bill is Tarantino's take on a martial arts movie, with a few titles in particular being heavily referenced by the two-part film.

Veteran actor Michael Madsen, known for his iconic roles in Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, was arrested early on August 17 following an alleged domestic altercation with his wife, DeAnna Madsen. Garden State was released in theaters on July 28, 2004, telling the offbeat story about a struggling actor who finds love and a new lease on life after returning to his hometown following his mother’s death.

The romantic dramedy, which currently boasts an 86 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes, grossed more than $35 million at the worldwide box office and won best first feature at the 2005 Independent Spirit Awards. Its acclaimed soundtrack also made fans flock straight from the cinema to the nearest record store, with the album later beating Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Shrek 2 for the Grammy for best compilation soundtrack album.

Despite being helmed by and starring Zach Braff, who was in the midst of becoming a major TV star on Scrubs, and starring Natalie Portman, Garden State faced numerous roadblocks. It struggled to secure financing and was ultimately made with a constrained budget of $2.5 million.

The Garden State soundtrack was an insanely popular compilation with the likes of The Shins, Coldplay, Iron & Wine, and more. So championed it was that you might be surprised to learn that it actually won the Grammy for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album. Also up that year was Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 2, whose selection of Johnny Cash, Shivaree and Ennio Morricone had to “let go” of the gold to Zach Braff’s jukebox.

Zach Braff remembered that Quentin Tarantino had a far better attitude about Kill Bill losing out to Garden State than he did Pulp Fiction falling to Forrest Gump. As he told The Ringer, “Tarantino jokingly said, ‘You stole my f*cking Grammy, man,’ and then gave me a big smile and a hug. He was super sweet and supportive. I was the kind of film-school kid that would have put a Reservoir Dogs poster on my wall.

Well, here’s one that most fans might have missed — John Travolta was never the first choice for the role of Vincent Vega. Twenty years ago, Kill Bill: Vol. 2 made quite the splash when it reached theaters. Quentin Tarantino movies always do. Some folks basked in its trenchant, loquacious splendor, marveling at how the most grandiose and blood-soaked depiction of vengeance yet in a Qt joint could ultimately boil down to a custody dispute between two parents sitting across a table. Others criticized its grittier, more intimate concerns as a letdown following the severed-head glory of Kill Bill: Vol 1… and, finally, there were even those who simply couldn’t get over that amusingly cynical thesis about Superman which the titular Bill drops right before the end of the flick.

If you don’t recall, the scene comes after David Carradine’s antagonist tranquilized Beatrix Kiddo, aka the Bride (Uma Thurman), with enough drugs to force her to listen to a long conversation. But then in Tarantino movies, they’re all long conversations.

Lynda Carter is paying tribute and honoring the late Jeannie Epper, the Wonder Woman stunt performer.

Epper died on Sunday at the age of 83. She performed stunts in the 1970s Wonder Woman TV series and films like The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

“I have a lot to say about Jeannie Epper. Most of all, I loved her. I always felt that we understood and appreciated one another,” Carter wrote in a message posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “After all, it was the 70s. We were united in the way that women had to be in order to thrive in a man’s world, through mutual respect, intellect and collaboration.”

Carter continued, “Jeannie was a vanguard who paved the way for all other stuntwomen who came after. Just as Diana was Wonder Woman, Jeannie Epper was also a Wonder Woman.

A founding member in 1968 of the Stuntwomen’s Association of Motion Pictures, Epper’s more than 150 film credits also included Catch Me If You Can, Romancing the Stone, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Princess Diaries. She was spotlighted in Double Dare, Amanda Micheli’s 2004 documentary about stuntwomen.

Her death was first reported by Deadline sister publication The Hollywood Reporter.

Jeannie Epper, who was a stunt double for Lynda Carter in the original “Wonder Woman” TV series and performed stunts in many movies and TV shows, died Sunday evening at her home in Simi Valley, Calif. She was 83.

Born in 1941, Epper went on to perform stunts on over 150 feature films like “Catch Me If You Can,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” “The Princess Diaries,” “Kill Bill: Vol. 2,” “Flight” and many more.

She was featured in Amanda Micheli’s 2004 documentary film about stuntwomen, “Double Dare.” The movie followed Epper and fellow stuntwoman Zoë Bell over several years of their stunt work.

Epper was a founding member of the Stuntwomen’s Association of Motion Pictures in 1968, became president of the association of 1999 and remained an honorary member. She also received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 from the Taurus World Stunt Awards and was the first woman to be selected for the honor.

Quentin Tarantino does not view Kill Bill as two separate films. That should be acknowledged upfront as fair. After all, it is this detail which allows Tarantino the ability to claim Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as his ninth instead of 10th film (thereby delaying any obligatory early retirements). And to be sure, Tarantino shot Kill Bill as one epic vision that was only encouraged to be broken up by, ahem, Harvey Weinstein while Tarantino was finishing up principal photography.

So while the story was released as Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, they’re two sides of the same tale. Be that as it may, there’s no denying that they’re two incredibly different sides.
