Director Matthew Mishory and producer-financier Bradford L. Schlei have acquired rights to the L.A.-set punk novel “What We Do Is Secret” by Thorn Kief Hillsberry.
Mishory, director of “Mosolov’s Suitcase” and “Fioretta,” will direct the film adaptation, which will enter development immediately, and produce with Schlei through their Rubber Ring Films. Schlei’s credits include “Swingers,” “Spun” and “Some Folks Call It a Slingblade.” Author and screenwriter Tony O’Neill will adapt the book.
The film adaptation will have a different title than the book, since there was already a 2007 film named “What We Do Is Secret,” which starred Shane West as Darby Crash of the Germs.

Phillips named “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split, according to the filing, which took place on Sept. 18 in Santa Barbara Superior Court.

Since our first edition was so popular, AfterElton.com now brings you Part 2 of “Hot Men of Fall TV”, where we take a look at a whole new crop of sexy actors from the upcoming fall season. This bunch is particularly “gay-friendly”, featuring as it does several actors who in many cases made their names portraying gay characters.
It bears mentioning again, however, that the network’s upcoming programs are sadly lacking when it comes to representing actors of color. In a television climate that’s seeing such great strides in the depiction of Glbt characters, we can only hope network executives won’t lose sight of the fact that boosting the number of racial minorities on the small screen remains an important goal.
Michael Arden, The Good Wife (CBS)
Before turning to TV and movies, openly gay actor Michael Arden was a successful Broadway star with a string of well-received performances under his belt.

Welcome to The Television Balcony, where I'll be bringing you the obscure or overlooked big-screen exploits of small-screen stars. We're opening the Balcony with a screening of What We Do Is Secret, an independent film starring Shane West (currently featured on The CW's Nikita) as the charismatic lead in the real-life story of a legendary punk rock band.
On paper, What We Do Is Secret (2007) is like my own special version of hell: a biopic about a genre of music I can't stand fronted by an actor whose work I hardly know. In reality, however, it's one of the best obscure films I've seen in a long while, centered around one of the best individual performances I've ever seen.
Given anyone that I've taken an interest in on the small screen, I'm more interested in the small movie they did years ago than the big blockbuster. This time, it's Shane West's fault.

In honor of the film's North American premiere, and its poster of course, the talented folks at Studio No.1 take a moment to discuss process, politics and posters. - It's unlikely I'd find someone who'd argue with me when I say that a memorable movie poster is a rare thing. With that in mind Ioncinema.com brings you the first in our new Poster Spotlight series; The Art of the Movie Poster. The Germs The Germs are the L.A.-based punk unit founded in 1977 by legendary frontman Darby Crash, guitarist Pat Smear (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), and bassist Lorna Doom. Drummer Don Bolles (named for a murdered newspaperman) joined shortly thereafter. The day before John Lennon's assassination, Crash tragically committed suicide at the age of 22. As a result, the Germs disbanded until 2005, when the film What We Do Is Secret went into production. Movie's lead Shane West joined Smear, Doom, and Bolles to revive the Germs. Collaborations include Belinda Carlisle, Joan Jett, and Jack Nitzsche. "Lexicon Devil," from the 1979 release GI, is melodic mayhem. Currently touring. This past weekend I caught part of Steve-o: Demise and Rise on MTV, which documents Steve-o's downward spiral into drug and alcohol addiction and subsequent intervention from the Jackass crew. It was sad to see one of the greatest actors of our time squandering all his skateboarding and rapping talent, but the whole time I kept thinking, "Please Steve-o, keep it together long enough to make Jackass Number Three... or at least another season of Wildboyz". Fortunately he will live to huff nitrous oxide another day, but the truth is, a lot of his best buds have already started to move on without him. Believe it or not, Steve-o's Wildboyz partner Chris Pontius has just landed a pretty sweet gig that could possibly be his ticket to bigger and better things. According to The Hollywood Reporter [1], Pontius will star in Sofia Coppola's next film Somewhere. He will play Sammy,...

Fango heard from Noah Segan, the busy genre actor who will soon be seen in Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel’s Deadgirl, Ti West’s Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever and Deon Taylor’s Chain Letter, updating us about Someone’S Knocking At The Door, which he stars in and produced. We also got some new exclusive pics and a festival poster for the Chad Ferrin-directed feature, which we first told you about here; you can see ’em below.
“We are presently about to premiere Someone’S Knocking in competition at Amsterdam’s Imagine festival, where two of Chad’s other films have premiered,” Segan (first photo) tells us. “It is a fantastic relationship to maintain, and Deadgirl will play there as well. We are very shortly going to announce an amazing domestic fest premiere for Someone’S Knocking, at a very well-regarded and hip program here on the West Coast.

Peace Arch Entertainment has announced a release date for the DVD release of the Germs biopic, “What We Do Is Secret”. The disc is due out on November 4, 2008. The movie tells the story of Darby Crash, born Jan Paul Beahm, the band he forms with friends in the late 1970’s La punk scene, and his five-year plan to become famous from it. The Germs first broke onto the California punk scene with their first single, “Forming/Sexboy”, in 1977, and are sometimes credited for being the forbearers of the “hardcore” punk movement of the 1980’s with their loud and fast dissonant sound. Crash, known for forming an almost Manson-like cult around himself of fans, committed suicide [...]...

For punk rock fans - and those who just miss those out-of-control years of punk, graffiti, glam rock and heroin - comes "What We Do Is Secret," an unsatisfying biopic of the Germs, the seminal La punkers led by Darby Crash.
While Crash Od'd like Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols, this is hardly on par with the more riveting 1986 film "Sid & Nancy." In fact, it's more like "Sid & Sid." Crash seems to have been a closeted homosexual who strangely enough hid this aspect of himself while fearlessly showing his insanity and guts onstage.

The "fake documentary" technique can be a useful way for a biopic to cut to the chase, or it can be a cheat. In What We Do Is Secret—Rodger Grossman's dramatization of the life and death of The Germs frontman Darby Crash—it's a little of both. Grossman tells the full Germs story, from Crash persuading his friend Pat Smear that he had a "five-year plan" for world domination to Crash overdosing on heroin the night before John Lennon was murdered. In case anyone misses the point, Grossman inserts scripted first-person interviews in which his characters tell the audience what The Germs were about. And in case we miss that, Grossman has the characters converse in the most pointed way possible, asking each other questions like "Is this what we wanted?" and making pronouncements like "The Germs are the most unpredictable, the most chaotic, the least-understood band in L.
