Spoiler Hilarious! That sums up last night's movie "Sunday Morning Stripper" at the AFI Showcase at the ArcLight Cinema. I must admit, I didn't know what to expect given the title. And it would be my luck that I couldn't pin down the exact theater it was playing in and had to ask the attendants at the complex to direct me. I felt a bit awkward saying, "uh, excuse me, can you tell me which theater is showing "The Sunday Morning Stripper?" And there I was, "whispering" as if a bolt of lighting was going to strike me for uttering those words.
The cast was impressive - A few talented unknowns teamed up with a some of our all-time favorites: Bruce Bruce (BET ComicView), Reynaldo Rey, and Jenifer Lewis.
The story was about a young lady who sang in the church choir. Each time she'd get up to do her solo, she'd get the "spirit" and start stripping off her clothes and throwing them out into the congregation. She did this every Sunday. Needless to say, the word got out and church attendance reached an all-time high! Brothers from all over the city showed up for service on Sunday. As she got going, they would throw dollars at her feet and get up and start shouting as she danced in the spirit.
In the end, the Pastor (Bruce Bruce) was pressured into putting an end to it. So, he went to visit her and talk with her about her Sunday performances. It was then that he learned her motivation behind it. She revealed her emotional scars to him and confessed that during those moments, she was truly doing nothing but praising the Lord for delivering her from all that she'd gone through in her life. Turns out that she had been molested growing up.
The following Sunday, Pastor brought it all home and delivered a sermon directed especially at those who stood in judgment of this young woman. By the time he was done, he'd delivered a message saying that God brought us in this world naked and will take us out naked and instead of judging this young woman for her style of praise and worship, we should instead praise the Lord using our full body as well. He then advised the congregation that if they wanted to get "butt naked" and shout, then do so. The service ended with the congregation, both men and women, getting the ghost and taking off their clothes and running around the church! It was absolutely hilarious.
