After decades in the industry, The CW’s executive vice president of talent and casting Lori Openden is retiring this month. In her stead, the network’s senior vice president of talent and casting Dana Therodoratos — who has worked with Openden at the network since 2006 — will step into the role to oversee casting of all CW series, pilots and original scripted digital programming.
“Under Lori and Dana’s guidance, discovering and showcasing rising new talent has been a hallmark of The CW brand since its inception, providing this network with a proud legacy of launching breakout stars that is second to none,” said CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. “With her vast experience and so many memorable casts and credits to her name, Lori has left an indelible mark on both this network and this industry, and we cannot thank her enough for all of her contributions. In a sign of hostility in the war between the WGA and Hollywood’s largest talent agencies, Gersh Agency has come under fire from TV and film writers for canceling a network meeting that it had arranged for a now-former client.
Writer Jorge Reyes disclosed the incident in a series of tweets on Monday. Reyes asserted that he arrived on Monday for a long-scheduled meeting at the Fox network only to find that it had been canceled. The network, according to Reyes’ tweets, later told him the meeting was canceled by his former reps at Gersh.
Reyes could not immediately be reached for comment. Gersh confirmed the substance of Reyes’ account in a statement issued Tuesday.
“Gersh set these meetings several months ago before the strike when Mr. Reyes was a Gersh client. When the client signed with another agency, the meetings were removed from the books as is normal protocol.

Tomorrow night at 10 marks the debut of Sundance's Hap and Leonard, a period buddy drama based on a series of Joe R. Lansdale novels, and starring James Purefoy and Michael Kenneth Williams as the two title characters: respectively, an ex-con and his gay Vietnam vet best friend. In the late '80s, they live on the bottom rung of life in East Texas, and keep getting caught up in trouble, starting in the TV show with the arrival of Hap's ex-wife Trudy. The adaptation, primarily directed by Jim Mickle and written by Mickle and Nick Damici, has mixed success. Purefoy and Williams have good chemistry together in the Terriers vein, and Leonard couldn't have been better tailored to Williams' slow-burning charisma if Lansdale had somehow gotten a glimpse of The Wire before writing the first book. But Purefoy's always-sketchy American accent goes particularly haywire as he tries to sound Texan,...

It is the pointed and tightly wound, can't-miss-a-word dialogue and slow-burning-til-massive-explosion story lines that set up "Mad Men" to be a perennial award winner, but it is without question that is its actors, with their nuanced performances and emotional journeys, that make the show such a hit.
While Jon Hamm's Don Draper is the undisputed lead, the troubled and mysterious ad man with a dark past and present day jawline that delivers as many messages as his mouth, the show relies almost as much on its female scene-stealer, Joan Holloway, played by the irreplaceable Christina Hendricks.
It's her early 60s charm -- she seems to bow down to the ludicrous male-female paradigm and inequitable power structure of the era, while actually turning it on its ear to run the office and sometimes, the personal lives of its inhabitants -- that make her performance so powerful, but there's no mistaking that her body,...

It's no stretch to say that "Mad Men" has been a career-defining show for most of its core cast. But that doesn't mean the actors didn't have careers before that.
In honor of "Mad Men" beginning its fourth season on Sunday (July 25), we at Zap2it decided to dedicate our latest Z-wind to three of the stars of the series: Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks and Elisabeth Moss.
Hamm had been a working actor for the better part of a decade before landing the role of Don Draper. He may have been best-known for his role in "Kissing Jessica Stein" (where he co-starred with his long-time girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt), but he also had a string of TV roles, including stints on "Providence" and "The Division" and guest spots on "Gilmore Girls" and "CSI: Miami."
He also did seven episodes of ABC's short-lived series "What About Brian," which brings us to our first clip.

In an interesting announcement, actor Tom Hanks revealed the cast for the upcoming Universal Pictures comedy "Larry Crowne" via a photo on his Twitter account.
Hanks snapped a shot of the casting board, something seen in practically every film production office, which displays head shots of all the major lead and supporting roles in the film. Hanks though took the shot at enough of a distance that the names are blurred, leading to many playing "guess the headshot".
From left to right we have: Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Cedric the Entertainer, Rami Malek, George Takei, Dale Dye, Peter Scolari, Bryan Cranston, Wilmer Valderrama, Taraji P. Henson, Malcolm Barrett, Mamie Gummer (unconfirmed), Bob Stephenson, Jon Seda, Maria Canals Barrera and Holmes Osborne.
Mbatha-Raw is best known for her work on British TV in shows like the short-lived "Bonekickers", as the sister of time-travelling former companion Martha Jones in "Doctor Who...

The Pacific – Episodes 1 And 2
Guest Review by Andrew James
Stars: James Badge Dale, Joe Mazzello, Jon Seda, Joshua Biton, Brendan Fletcher | Directed by Timothy Van Patten & David Nutter
The Pacific is the eagerly anticipated HBO World War II drama by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. If that sounds a bit familiar it’s because HBO, Hanks and Spielberg were also the team behind Band of Brothers, which The Pacific is kind of a successor to.
Whilst many comparisons will be made between the two shows, The Pacific is closer in theme to Vietnam based TV shows such as Tour of Duty. Where Band of Brothers was concerned with Europe’s last great ground war, which was recognisable to western troops at the time, the Marines in Pacific are fighting in strange, alien landscapes, in unfamiliar and unknown locations with hard to pronounce names.

The decades-old taboo that drama series with minority leads cannot work finally might be broken.
Halfway through the castings of broadcast drama pilots this season, the top-billed actors on four pilots are non-Caucasian.
What's more, the four projects are among the highest-profile drama pilots this year.
The spy couple at the center of J.J. Abrams' "Undercovers" for NBC is played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Boris Kodjoe. "Undercovers," co-written by Abrams, marks his first pilot directing effort since "Lost" six years ago.
Forest Whitaker is the lead on CBS' "Criminal Minds" spinoff; Laz Alonso tops the Fox action-drama "Breakout Kings," directed and exec produced by Gavin Hood; and Freddy Rodriguez headlines CBS' CIA drama "Chaos," directed and executive produced by Brett Ratner.
Last year's crop of broadcast pilots included only one fronted by a minority actor, the LL Cool J starrer "NCIS: Los Angeles." The season before that, there were no pilots led by minorities.

While African-American men only nabbed 4% of the slots on the Hot 100 list, they pretty much ruled the roost when it came to this category. Indeed, it was nearly a Top 10 sweep with only Wilson Cruz and Mario López sneaking in at the end. As for Asians, B.D. Wong landed at #14 and Daniel Dae Kim came in at #18 while Sendhil Ramamurthy pretty much carried the torch for Indian representation by placing #12. The next highest-ranking man of Indian descent was British native Dev Patel, who made quite an impact in Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Alas, the success of that movie only propelled Dev to #28.
After Cruz and López, the next highest ranking men of Hispanic descent were Gael García Bernal and Guillermo Díaz at #s 20 and 21, respectively. Pop singer Ricky Martin clocked in at #26 followed by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo at #40.
With any luck, the election of Barack Obama will remind all of us...

Meet David E. Kelley's newest discovery -- Charity Wakefield.
After making Calista Flockhart a household name by tapping her as the title character in his legal dramedy "Ally McBeal," Kelley has cast 27-year-old English actress Wakefield as the female lead in "Legally Mad," his new quirky legal drama for NBC.
Jon Seda also has been cast in the Warner Bros. TV-produced project, which centers on Brady Hamm (Wakefield), a twentysomething woman who takes a job at her father's law firm and quickly becomes the practice's center.
Brady is deeply devoted to her father and chose to work for him despite being offered several prestigious clerkships out of law school. She is easygoing, deadpan funny and disarms with charm.
Seda will play the rugged, grumpy but lovable Joe Matty, who is an equal-opportunity offender.
The two join previously cast Kristin Chenoweth.

Rock, Lopez among UPN star powers
UPN is adding some star power to its lineup for next season, picking up two series toplined by Denise Richards and Shannen Doherty, a drama executive produced by Jennifer Lopez and starring Vanessa L. Williams and a comedy executive produced by Chris Rock. The network also stayed in the family with its series orders. While only 60% of its pilots were produced/co-produced by Viacom entities, all four of its series pickups -- the comedies Everybody Hates Chris and Love, Inc. and the dramas Sex, Lies & Secrets and South Beach -- hail from UPN's sibling studio Paramount Network Television. UPN is still finalizing its schedule, which will be unveiled to advertisers Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York, but sources indicated that comedies Girlfriends, Half & Half, One on One and its freshman spinoff Cuts are looking good to return. There also was buzz Tuesday about a possible second-season pickup for Kevin Hill, UPN's acclaimed drama starring Taye Diggs that has been on the bubble after failing to gain traction with viewers.
