The Demon Disorder marks the directorial debut of Steven Boyle, it’s also his first credit as a writer, or rather co-writer along with Toby Osborne. He’s no stranger to film though, or to horror for that matter, having effects and makeup credits on films ranging from Daybreakers and Ghost Ship to Boar and Two Heads Creek. And he’s channelled that experience into a tale of dark secrets and demonic activity somewhere in the Outback.
It begins with a nightmare of an old man shackled to his bed turning into a waking nightmare as Phillip wakes up and finds his brother Jake in the barn looking at one of their pigs, skinned but still alive.

Most of the time, Ethan Hawke is an indicator of quality -- or, if not that, then an ambition to make something meaningful. He's always taken the craft of acting seriously (something that spurred a good-natured war of attrition between him and Robin Williams while filming "Dead Poets Society"), but he's not haughty about it. He played a vampiric hematologist for The Spierig Brothers in 2009's "Daybreakers" and even joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as an Ammit-worshipping weirdo who pours glass shards in his shoes for "Moon Knight." Also, let's not forget that time he decked himself out in garish accessories to play the incredibly-named Jolly the Pimp in Luc Besson's eye-popping space opera "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (a reminder that bad people can make spectacular art).
Alas, 2013's "Getaway" is the rare occasion where it's hard to imagine Hawke having signed...

Director Scott Mann’s thriller Fall, which stars Grace Caroline Currey (Shazam!: Fury of the Gods) and Virginia Gardner (Halloween 2018) as a pair of characters who get stuck at the top of a 2000 foot tall radio tower, was given a theatrical release, but it wasn’t really a break-out hit. It made $21 million worldwide, on a budget of $3 million. More viewers watched it on Amazon, purchased it on Blu-ray or DVD (order it Here), or caught it on Starz or Netflix… and Fall was so successful on Netflix, it was enough to get back-to-back sequels greenlit by Capstone Studios! Mann will be writing and directing Fall 3 himself, but he has decided to hand the helm of the middle installment of this trilogy over another director. Or, as it turns out, other directors. Capstone Studios’ CEO Christian Mercuri has announced that Fall 2 is set to be directed by the filmmaking...

In an interesting bit of remake news, a 2006 film that was produced by horror icon Wes Craven will be remade for a new horror reimagining. The Breed starred Fast & Furious family member Michelle Rodriguez and Oliver Hudson. Variety reports that director brothers Sean and Bryan Furst will be sitting in the director seats for the new incarnation, which has been described as an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” The brothers will produce the horror film together through their company, Curmudgeon Films.
It has also now being said that Grace Caroline Currey, who is known as Mary in both Shazam and Shazam: Fury of the Gods, as well as starring in 2022’s suspense flick Fall, is set to star in the remake for the Furst brothers. Up next from Wyrmwood writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner is a shark attack survival movie titled Beast of War, and Variety brings news that the shark horror movie has been acquired for distribution by Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go USA for North America.
The period Wii film is loosely based on real-life events.
Beast of War “follows a warship carrying hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WWII. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil and blood. While a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives, their biggest battle is yet to come. In the dark below, the ultimate apex predator — a great white shark — hunts in the wreckage and is drawn to the smell of fresh blood in the water.

Something’s up in suburbia again. And this time- it’s something sinister. When it comes to horror movies, we all have our preferences in terms of style and sub-genre. Some of us favor a nice haunted house, while others may be looking for a creepy found footage piece, or even the occasional possession situation. In either case, you may find a taste of what you’re looking for in today’s episode where we take a retrospective look at a fun horror film with more punch packed into it than you may have expected. There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

It’s hard to overstate just how big the “Saw” movies were in the 2000s. The original low-budget horror film is about a serial killer who forces his victims to mutilate themselves to survive his deathtraps was such a hit that every single year, a new sequel would come out for Halloween season. And every single year, it printed money.
But although the many “Saw” films rely on an easily repeatable premise, they’re not formulaic films. Indeed, they’re highly unusual in their scope and ambition, telling a multilayered story across many timelines simultaneously, with a vast mythology and a complex moral code. There’s a genuine ingenuity to most of the “Saw” movies that can take your breath away, whether you get wrapped up in its grotesque world or simply marvel at how ambitious it gets.
So let’s play a little game, and take a look at...

Daybreakers is one of the most overlooked vampire movies of the modern era, but its sci-fi elements really do shine and its clinical vibes are not what you’d expect from your average bloodsucker tale. It’s inventive, entertaining, and definitely worth a look.

He may have been preceded by characters like Lord Ruthven and Carmilla, but Dracula is still the quintessential vampire, with Bram Stoker’s iconic novel boasting over two hundred cinematic adaptations and inspiring most modern vampire media. That being said, vampire movies have long worked their way out from beneath the shadow of Stoker’s gothic opus, offering up insanely varied stories about our favorite blood-sucking beasts.
And with Chris McKay’s upcoming Renfield proving that there are still fresh spins to be had on the Dracula formula, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the most under-appreciated vampire movies out there. Evil doesn’t span eternity without a little help.
In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Emmy nominee Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula (Oscar® winner Nicolas Cage). Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.

MGM+ is shoring up its original content selection with the pickup of a new fantasy-adventure comedy, The Portable Door, an MGM+ original film that will be coming exclusively to the U.S. market in April.
The movie stars multi-time Golden Globe nominee Sam Neill and Patrick Gibson, joining two-time Academy Award winner Christoph Waltz, and Sophie Wilde.
The award-winning Jeffrey Walker directed the film, which is adapted by Leon Ford (Griff the Invisible) from Tom Holt's popular seven-book fantasy series.
"The movie centers on Paul Carpenter (Gibson) and Sophie Pettingel (Wilde), lowly, put-upon interns who begin working at the mysterious London firm J.W. Wells & Co., and become increasingly aware that their employers are anything but conventional," the logline reads.
"Charismatic villains Humphrey Wells (Waltz), the CEO of the company, and middle manager Dennis Tanner (Neill) are disrupting the world of magic by bringing modern corporate strategy to ancient magical practices,...

Nicolas Cage has played a lot of kooky characters in his career thus far, but this April he ticks off another icon to his list: Dracula. The Oscar-winning actor plays the classic vampire in the new action horror-comedy “Renfield,” and the first trailer promises a rollicking good time.
Nicholas Hoult stars as the titular character in this film, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
“The Tomorrow War” and “The Lego Batman Movie” filmmaker Chris McKay directs from a script by Ryan Ridley (“Rick and Morty”), and the cast also includes Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz and Adrian Martinez.

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Vampire movies have been a part of cinema for a long, long time. Sure, a great many of those movies center on your classic "Dracula in a cape," and at times, that can be great. But vampire flicks that go a little bit outside the box have always been a little bit more my speed.
Such is the case with "Daybreakers," an ambitious, kind of crazy mid-size movie that has largely slipped through the cracks in the years since its release. I'm here to propose that we absolutely should not let it slip away entirely.
Directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, aka the Spierig brothers, the film takes place a decade after a plague turns most of the world's population into vampires.

If it's Halloween, it must be "Saw." The franchise, first conceived by genre maestro James Wan and scribe Leigh Whannell, set the horror world ablaze. So much so, that by the time the fourth entry hit theaters in 2007, Lionsgate Films positioned the franchise as part and parcel of the Halloween season itself. Like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger, franchise antagonist John Kramer, otherwise known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) became a horror icon. Often only heard in voiceover through the use of Billy the Puppet — an indelible piece of horror iconography — John Kramer radically subverted horror expectations.
John Kramer, dying from colon cancer, develops a series of tests for those he perceives as taking their lives for granted. He traps ostensible participants in deadly scenarios, forcing them to make difficult choices to survive. While the series postures as some kind of moral imperative, it mostly serves as a series of Grand Guignol exhibitions of outrageous,...

Kind blue eyes. That’s the most striking part of the poster for The Black Phone, the latest Blumhouse horror movie from director Scott Derrickson. Filling the poster is the face of the Grabber, a kidnapper and child murderer who terrorizes a Denver suburb in 1978, covered with speckled gray paint. A mask covers the Grabber’s jaw, giving the killer an unsettling permanent grin, while a top hat and wide glasses accentuate his upper face. But it’s those eyes that stand out the most, somehow kind and sad, despite their ghastly surroundings, making the Grabber all the more terrifying.

After establishing himself as one of the greatest leading men from Generation X, Hawke developed a reputation for playing sensitive and vulnerable characters, given to fits of thoughtful melancholy. Ethan Hawke is no stranger to horror, having played roles in films like the vampire thriller "Daybreakers" and the supernatural horror, "Sinister." Hawke reunites with "Sinister" director Scott Derrickson in the upcoming "The Black Phone," in which he plays a terrifying figure dubbed the Grabber, a sadistic child-kidnapper who also happens to be a part-time magician.
Hawke played an extremely nuanced, convincing villain in the Disney+ show, "Moon Knight," bringing the character of Arthur Harrow to life, which is brilliantly interpreted by Hawke (as usual). Needless to say, Hawke will infuse a considerable amount of menace into his character...

Arachnophobes, beware, you’re in for a scare.
A new horror about a super-sized spider is hitting the Croisette from Cornerstone Films, which will handle worldwide sales and introduce the pic to buyers in Cannes.
From writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner, “Sting” centers on a spider hatched from a mysterious object that falls from the sky into a New York City apartment building. When 12-year-old Charlotte finds the spider, she decides to keep it as a pet, and name it Sting. But as her fascination with Sting grows, so too does the arachnid’s size — and appetite for blood.
Neighbors’ pets start to go missing, and then the neighbors themselves. Soon Charlotte’s family and the eccentric characters of the building realize that they are all trapped, hunted by a ravenous spider with a taste for human flesh, and Charlotte is the only one who can stop it.

Applications are open today for Aacta Pitch: Bite, a feature film development initiative in partnership with Monster Pictures.
The call out is for horror or elevated genre feature film concepts; the theme of ‘bite’ can be taken literally, as in monsters, vampires, zombies or cannibals, or metaphorically, as in to ‘take the bait’.
The winner will receive $10,000 in development funds and an Australian theatrical distribution agreement with Monster Pictures, as well as two tickets to the Aacta Awards and a 12-month Aacta professional membership.
Last year’s theme was isolation, and in addition to the winning project, Julia Corcoran’s Burning, a further five projects were also optioned.
Keeping in line with the overall spirit of the initiative, the project ideas must work effectively with minimal locations, small casts and lower budgets.
“After such a successful first year, Monster Pictures is really looking forward to sinking our teeth into this year’s initiative.

Netflix is an ever-changing, constantly growing treasure trove of hidden gems and secret delights (here’s everything new on Netflix UK this month). Sometimes, a teeny bit too secret though.
Who hasn’t sat down to watch a horror movie and found themselves scrolling endlessly, either not being able to find something they’re in the mood for, or not really knowing what half the titles are, or if they’re any good?
We’ve scoured the full current catalogue available to watch in the UK now and picked out the best scary movies. It’s a mix of classic and new, and a range of slashers, horror-coms, mumblegore, monster movies and more to hopefully scratch that itch with ease.
We’ll keep this updated as and when titles drop in and out of the service.

Grant Hardie and Chris Brown.
Monster Pictures’ Grant Hardie and Pictures in Paradise’s Chris Brown have formed a genre film investment and production company in partnership with new international financier Fairvale Entertainment.
They plan to launch with a slate of five films budgeted at $2.5 million – $3 million to be produced in Australia and New Zealand, and aim to have all released by 2023.
Today the Monsters in Paradise partners called for projects from Australian and New Zealand writers, producers, directors and creative teams. There will be a strong focus on inclusivity including female, Indigenous and Lgtbi filmmakers.
“We intend to create a mini-studio with a pool of talent, like the Blumhouse model, with the add-on of distribution in Australia,” Hardie tells If.

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

After leaving us with a bombshell season 1 ending, Daybreak won't live to see another day.
The genre-bending series Daybreak fought off countless ghoulies during its 10-episode first season, but it couldn’t avoid a cold death at the hands of its streamer. Netflix canceled the post-apocalyptic series, which was only released on October 24th.
Series co-creator and executive producer Aron Eli Coleite addressed the cancelation in a statement to fans, who he dubbed “daybreakers,” on Twitter: “No one is as heartbroken as we are that we can’t share more of this ride with you. But we are so grateful to have gotten to bring it so far.” You can read Coleite’s full statement here.
Based on a comic of the same name by Brian Ralph, Daybreak was set in a near-future in which teenagers are the last survivors of an atomic bomb, though some...

Filmmaking brothers Michael and Peter Spierig have boarded the supernatural thriller series adaptation of the popular literary “Ben Walker” franchise, developed by Stuart Ford’s Agc Television.
Rob Carlson at UTA negotiated the deal on behalf of the Spierig Brothers with Agc Television President Lourdes Diaz, Agc’s VP of Legal & Business Affairs Anant Tamirisa, and VP of Scripted Television Matt Bankston.
Ford, Diaz, creator Christopher Golden, and Pete Donaldson for Donaldson Media & Consulting will executive produce.
The Spierig brothers hit the ground running in 2003 when their debut feature “Undead” won the Fipresci Award and enjoyed a North American release handled by Lionsgate. Their follow up, “Daybreakers,” starred Ethan Hawke and was a hit at that year’s Midnight Madness in Toronto, before again enjoying a theatrical run again handled by Lionsgate.
Since then the two have found continued success with features such as “Predestination” – once again with Hawke in the leading role,...
