Steven Moffat has been writing episodes of Doctor Who for many years now. The anticipation for Lulu’s return on General Hospital is high. After a bomb destroyed the Floating Rib restaurant in 2020, Lulu — then played by Emme Rylan — ended up in a coma. Ever since, she has been in a long-term care facility. But the meds she was given took a toll on her liver. So, she underwent a risky transplant operation. The donor, Sam, died from a heart attack while in recovery, and Lulu’s mom, Laura, has been begging her daughter to emerge from her comatose state. Lulu’s return is imminent, and we now know when Alexa Havins will officially take on the role. And it’s just around the corner.

Steven Moffat, the former showrunner of ‘Doctor Who,’ still plays a significant role in the series’ universe.

He recently discussed his involvement in this year’s Christmas Special titled ‘Joy to the World,’ in which ‘Bridgerton’ star Nicola Coughlan will appear.

The title, a typical Moffat play on words, hints at the character’s name, Joy, and sets the tone for the holiday episode.

In a revealing chat with a regional BBC station, Moffat unveiled some tidbits about the special, marking his 50th script for the show and possibly his last for a while.

He explained that he had no plans to return to ‘Doctor Who’ after his last episode ‘Boom,’ being occupied with various projects like the play ‘The Unfriend,’ the miniseries ‘Inside Man,’ and ‘The Devil’s Hour’—a series produced by his wife Sue Vertue’s company.

Exclusive: Sky Studios has boarded the TV adaptation of Ben Aaronovitch’s ‘Rivers of London’ and is developing it with Tom Winchester’s drama indie Pure Fiction. With Sky Studios attached, the series will bow on Sky in the U.K. Deadline understands there is U.S. buyer interest although no confirmed deal yet.

Pure Fiction and Sky Studios are working up the series, which is an adaptation of the first book in Ben Aaronovitch’s urban fantasy series. Slow Horses prodco See Saw is an investor in Pure Fiction, which Winchester, who was formerly President of Heyday Television, set up in 2022. See Saw is also a production partner on the Rivers of London series.

AMC Networks has bought out its partner for the cable channel BBC America, the company announced on Friday.

The entertainment giant spent $49 million in cash to acquire full control of the channel from BBC Studios, which held a 50.1 percent stake in the network.

The channel was originally launched in 1998 by the commercial arm of the BBC, then known as BBC Worldwide, which allowed the British public service broadcaster to present its comedies and dramas to a stateside audience while allowing it to tap into various advertising opportunities.

BBC America was originally distributed by Discovery Communications, but the partnership ended in 2014 when AMC Networks acquired a minority stake in the channel. It continued to operate under a licensing agreement with BBC Studios, during which it replaced a considerable amount of British programming with re-runs of “Star Trek,” “Law & Order,...

I did wonder how well Good Omens would translate from book to screen. Well, it worked, and now we’re ready to see how it all comes to an end. Well, sort of. We’re not “ready” ready, but it does need an ending.

This is one of those series that can’t be duplicated. There isn’t anything else out there that matches the energy, but there are a fair few shows that come somewhat close. It all depends on the elements you want to gain from Good Omens in other works.

I’ve always admired Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone because Serling so masterfully hid social activism in science fiction stories.

In the 1950s and early 1960s, there were some things he couldn’t say outright.

He was a fierce advocate for racial and sexual equality at a time when those ideas were considered taboo to talk about on television.

BBC America now fully and officially belongs to AMC Networks. The company revealed that it acquired the remaining 50.1% of the channel from BBC Studios in a deal that took place last Friday.

The remaining half of the company was paid for in $42 million cash, which was distributed from the savings balance sheet. “We now own 100% of the iconic channel with full operational control, and look forward to what the future holds,” Patrick O’Connell, executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of AMC Networks, said during the company’s third quarter earnings call for 2024.

O’Connell assured analysts that moving forward AMC will continue to have a “close commercial relationship with BBC Studios” when it comes to the channel, ensuring that the brand and its programming remain at the same caliber. The company will continue to fully consolidate BBC America, as it did prior to this transaction.

Kemi Badenoch has become the UK Conservative Party leader, beating her colleague Robert Jenrick in the final vote, to become the first Black leader of a British national political party.

Badenoch previously engaged in a social media war of words with Doctor Who star David Tennant. She said she “wasn’t afraid of Doctor Who” after the pair clashed on trans rights.

Badenoch won by more than 10,000 votes from a total poll of more than 130,000. Party members across the country voted in the contest, which followed the Tory party defeat in the UK general election this summer, after which defeated prime minister Rishi Sunak said he would stand down.

Conservative Party chairman Richard Fuller introduced the conference to announce the result in London 11am Saturday morning. Sony Pictures Television has expanded its UK television production by acquiring a majority stake in the new Belfast-based company Hot Sauce. Hot Sauce was founded by acclaimed writers Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson, known for their work on BBC shows like “The Salisbury Poisonings” and the police drama “Blue Lights.”

The deal gives Sony Pictures Television control over Hot Sauce and allows the company to join Sony’s other UK production studios. Financial terms of the acquisition were not released. Matthew Justice, head of UK and European television for Sony Pictures, said the deal strengthens the company’s position in British drama.

Lawn and Patterson started Hot Sauce as a creative partnership after working together at BBC. Their drama “Blue Lights” was a big success, receiving a renewal for two seasons before the second one even aired. Sony Pictures Television (Spt) is getting into business with the creators of BBC hits The Salisbury Poisonings and Blue Lights.

Spt has forayed once again into the UK drama market by giving majority backing to Belfast-based Hot Sauce, the new label run by Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson. Hot Sauce joins the likes of Left Bank and Bad Wolf in the Spt stable. The percentage stake in the fledgling outfit and deal terms are undisclosed.

Steven Moffat, known for his work on ‘Doctor Who‘ and co-creating ‘Sherlock,’ recently shared his experiences and views at the Toronto International Film Festival.

With a Christmas special titled ‘Joy to the World‘ on the way, Moffat is set to become the writer with the most episodes of ‘Doctor Who’ under his belt, reaching fifty with this release.

Moffat humorously highlighted the unique aspect of ‘Doctor Who,’ where the lead can be replaced, unlike most other shows. This feature, he pointed out, adds a playful complexity within the community, especially among the actors who have previously played the role.

Each actor, including David Tennant, believes they are the quintessential Doctor, which Moffat finds both amusing and challenging.

During the festival, Moffat discussed the concept of storytelling through reboots, using ‘Doctor Who’s’ regenerations as a prime example. He believes all stories are essentially reboots, where new storytellers reimagine characters and plots in their unique ways.

A few months ago, we learned that Doctor Who's future isn't as safe as most fans expected after the BBC and Disney+ teamed up to produce Russell T Davies' splashy new revival of the long-running sci-fi series.

BBC Studios is unifying content sales under Janet Brown.

Having brought several divisions closer together over the past year or so, the BBC’s commercial arm will launch a Global Content Sales division with Brown overseeing content sales across all regions while centralizing global operations and content investment.

As part of the change, BBC Studios will recruit for a new EVP, Global Content Sales based in London and reporting to Brown. This role will serve as a key global partner for the BBC Studios’ production team and invested production labels, which includes the likes of Baby Reindeer producer Clerkenwell Films and Steve Coogan’s Baby Cow.

Brown joined BBC Studios in 2022 and has been leading on sales in North America and Latin America. She will continue reporting to Rebecca Glashow, CEO of BBC Global Media & Streaming.

When Ncuti Gatwa recorded The Graham Norton Show last Thursday, he delivered what appeared to be good news for Doctor Who fans: his third season as the Time Lord would shoot next year.

Gatwa’s comments were briefed to the press by The Graham Norton Show‘s publicity team on Friday morning, but his quote mysteriously changed when the chat show broadcast on BBC1 later that evening.

Speaking to Norton on the famous red sofa, Gatwa originally revealed: “We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year.”
