While visiting their friend Chong Kwai (Ray MacDonald) in Thailand, cousins Ted (Bo-lin Chen) and May (Kate Yeung), May's friend April (Isabella Leong), and April's boyfriend Kofei (Yu Gu) are introduced to The Ten Encounters, a Thai book detailing ten ways to see ghosts. For fun, they try out some of the easier methods and get sucked deeper and deeper into the game until it becomes tragic, even after Ted and May return to Hong Kong.
The Eye 3 (Gin gwai 10) is the third movie in a trilogy of Eye movies by the Chinese Pang Brothers, Danny and Oxide. The '10' in the title does not indicate that this is the tenth film in a series. It refers to a book that details 10 ways to see ghosts. The Pangs, along with Mark Wu, wrote the screenplay. The other movies in the series include The Eye (2002) (2002) and The Eye 2 (2004) (2004).
No. There is just one reference each to the previous Gin gwai movies as 'the Condemned Cornea Transplant' (Gin gwai) and 'To Attempt Suicide While Pregnant' (Gin gwai 2), so Gin gwai 10 can be viewed as a separate movie. It is linked to the previous Gin gwai movies only by the fact that they all deal with people who can see ghosts.
It was filmed in Cantonese with small amounts of Thai and Mandarin. English subtitles are provided.
The movie offers only nine steps in no particular order. The most convenient way, according to Chong Kwai, is to use the Thai Spirits in a Glass technique (similar to a ouija board). Other methods include: (2) peeking between your knees, (3) combing your hair at midnight in front of a mirror, (4) rubbing graveyard dirt over your eyes, (5) opening an umbrella indoors, (6) playing hide and seek at midnight while carrying a black cat, (7) serving dinner at a crossroads, (8) the Special Eye Mask (no details given), and (9) playing dead in a used funeral suit. Be warned that, once started, you must continue through all 10 steps or misfortune will hit you.
Ted and May don funeral garb and enter the spirit world. They become surrounded with ghosts but use their breaths and Ted's fart to keep the ghosts at bay. They find Kofei and April. Suddenly, they hear bells ringing, signaling that they must return to the real world. It's revealed that Kofei is dead and that April committed suicide. Meanwhile, Chong Kwai and his mother (Pisamai Pakdeevijit) attempt to bring back Ted and May. Ted and May awaken in their funeral suits and see that they are back in the apartment hallway watching the break-dancing boys. When the boys pass through them, they realize that they are also dead. In the final scene, another young man in the bookstore looks at The Ten Encounters, which features caricatures of Ted, May, April, Kofei, and Chong Kwai in the pages. The shopkeeper offers the buyer a discount, and he accepts.
