Lido Pimienta is at home in Toronto the day after releasing yet another visual feat — this time, it’s the Orly Anan-directed video for her song “Coming Thru,” which features her presiding over an opulent table that brims with lush fruit and food. Her son, Lucian, chatters happily in the background of the interview as Pimienta walks around in her house, a place that seems to abound with just as much sound and color as her recent video set. “There’s not a single wall in this house that...

“Contra” had its world premiere at the 16th Zurich Film Festival, and is set for a Christmas release in German-speaking territories by Constantin Film, one of the world’s top independent distributors. Pti will give the film a physical market premiere at February’s European Film Market.
Wortmann has been one of German cinema’s leading directors since the early 90s, with films like “Maybe, Maybe Not” (“Der bewegte Mann”), which was the most successful German film of the 1990s, soccer drama “The Miracle of Bern” (“Das Wunder von Bern”), and “Pope Joan” (“Die Päpstin”).

For his second feature film, German filmmaker Jan Speckenbach is tackling familiar material, with a twist. In Speckenbach’s first feature, “Reported Missing” (aka “Die Vermissten”), a father goes searching for his estranged — and now missing — daughter and is shocked by what he finds along the way.
In his “Freedom,” Speckenbach appears to be working through a similar idea, but told through a very different perspective.

Nearly all the recurring players on the Masterpiece on PBS show Sherlock are based on fictional folks found in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes tales. The most obvious exception? Molly Hooper, the morgue registrar played by actress Louise Brealey. In fact, the show’s creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss at first only intended the Holmes-assisting Hooper to appear in the show’s first episode. But over the years, Molly has become a genuinely beloved character as viewers tracked her unrequited crush on Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular sleuth and her predictably doomed romance with Andrew Scott’s villainous Moriarty.

Why spend your Easter weekend in the 21st century when you could take a trip back to the Roman Empire with a stopover in the Dark Ages?
Barabbas premiered earlier in the week, but there will be plenty of chances to watch it over the holiday weekend. Follow his journey to faith with four chances to watch the entire mini-series this weekend. It all starts Saturday at 12p Et/ 9a Pt.
In addition to the re-airing of Barabbas, Pope Joan is also returning to Reelz for the holiday. Pope Joan follows the story of a young woman living in Germania in the 9th century who feels a calling to the priesthood. By disguising herself as a man she manages to rise through...

During this papal interregnum, the best source of Vatican news is coming from South Philly blogger Rocco Palmo, whose blog reportedly is the go-to site for news and gossip about papal succession. When it comes to films about the church, I’m partial to nun films ("The Nun’s Story," "The Sound of Music," "The Trouble With Angels," "Therese," "Black Narcissus") than pope movies, because the pontiff is usually a distant authoritarian rather than a fleshed-out character. Still, I have some favorite film popes, including, improbably, John Goodman as Pope Sergius in "Pope Joan" (the 2009 movie starring Johanna Wokaluk as the 9th-century woman who, though Vatican historians say it never happened, according to legend posed as a male, and was elevated to pope). As Pope Joan, Wokaluk says something to the effect that women are superior to men because Eve ate the apple for the love of knowledge and Adam...

Her time as the Pope was short-lived, and her tenure was omitted from papal records. The epic movie event Pope Joan will be re-airing on ReelzChannel this month and again in March to celebrate National Women's History Month (Nwhm). March is officially Nwhm and what better way to celebrate than to honor a legendary woman whose alleged existence has been denied for over a thousand years.
Pope Joan is the story of a controversial figure of historical record who disguised herself as a man and rose to rule the Catholic Church in the 9th century as the first and only woman to sit on the throne of St. Peter. The movie, based on the international bestselling novel by Donna Woolfolk Cross, features the performances of John Goodman, Johanna Wokalek and David Wenham.

When Donna Woolfolk Cross first stepped on set of the movie adaptation of her book Pope Joan, she literally got goosebumps watching the words she wrote transform into hundreds reenacting a market scene.

The world of the 11th-century was one in which the overreaching arms of the patriarchal Catholic church controlled every aspect of women’s (and most men’s) lives; a woman was told when she can have sex, with whom, and for what purposes. She was told what power she could have in her family and who she must obey (men). And for a nun in the middle ages, it was a dozen times worse. Nuns were the bottom of the rung, and still are, in the catholic church, beholden to their male leaders *cough* oppressors. Although the holiday season means time off work for most other industries in the U.S., it means it's awards season for the film business, which in turn necessitates plenty of tributes and accolades to be presented on the East and West Coasts at your local repertory theater in advance of the Oscars where movie stars can be seen and Q & As are conducted. Yet in New York and Los Angeles, there will be a wealth of other options as neighborhood theaters flood their screens with contemporary cinema from other parts of the world, classic movies in their full bigscreen glory, and certain-to-be-fun nods to the holidays, whether it's Halloween or Christmas. If you live in one of these areas or see fit to travel, these are the events worth the trouble over the next few months.

Cologne, Germany -- "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier, celebrity philanthropist Sir Bob Geldof, German star Nora Tschirner ("Rabbit Without Ears") and Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond ("Close Encounters of the Third Kind") will be among the VIPs attending this year's Zurich Film Festival, which runs Sept. 23 – Oct. 3.
Zurich received worldwide attention last year after director Roman Polanski, en route to accept the festival's lifetime achievement award, was arrested by Swiss police on a decades-old sex charge. For its 6th edition, Zurich is hoping cinema, not scandal, will be in the spotlight.
Other luminaries making the trip to Zurich are directors Milos Forman, who will receive a retrospective tribute at the fest, and Oliver Stone, whose "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" closes the event. Also set to attend is actor Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon") and German actress Johanna Wokalek ("Pope Joan," "The Baader Meinhof Complex").

Berlin -- German director Doris Dorrie, hot off the comeback success of her latest comedy "The Hairdresser," has signed on to write and direct one or more feature adaptations from "Verbrechen," (Crime), a best-selling series of short stories from author Ferdinand von Schirach.
The first project will be "Gluck" (Luck), based on the story of the same name in the collection. It follows the relationship between two young people in Berlin: Irina, a prostitute and war refugee, and Kalle, a homeless punk.
Constantin Film, which produced "Hairdresser," is also on board for "Gluck" with Oliver Berben ("Pope Joan") producing. Constantin Film boss Martin Moszkowicz will act as executive producer. Shooting is planned for April/May of 2011 in Berlin and Eastern Europe. No talent is attached yet.
"Verbrechen" was published last year and immediately stormed the German bestseller charts, selling more than 200,000 copies. Translation rights have been sold to 30 countries.

In addition to authoring “Pope Joan: A Novel,” I was closely involved in the movie version that premiered last fall in Berlin. Having had the advantage of working in both genres, I learned that book-lovers – who lament, “Why is the movie never as good as the book? – are asking the wrong question. The question should be: “Why is the movie always different from the book?”
The answer lies in the nature of a screenplay. Each page of a screenplay equals roughly one minute of screen time. Do the math: 140-page screenplay = 2-hour-and-20-minute movie. Now consider: My novel runs a little over 400 pages.
Here’s what matters: The movie needs to capture the soul of the book — the part that made readers love it. I’m so lucky this happened with “Pope Joan.” The theme of my novel is female empowerment through learning. That theme has survived intact — and very movingly — in the film.

For the entire length of my writing here at Cinematical, there are a few films that have been on the forward trajectory since I started in 2006. One was Jackboots on Whitehall, which took a while -- understandably -- considering the time it takes to film a movie focused on action figures. The other is Pope Joan, a film stalled by a myriad of cinematic plagues.
In early 2007, John Goodman was sued for backing out of his role as Pope Serguis. Not too long after, Constantin Film halted production. The production was slapped with more drama when the director was fired for comments made to a newspaper. But then they got a new director, and things looked on the up and up. That is, until star Franka Potente backed out in May of 2008. Then the film got another jolt back in the plus column -- John Goodman returned and David Wenham signed on.

There is so very much to recommend the new film Pope Joan, the epic German-made, English-language biopic of the legendary (and, many would say, apocryphal) ninth-century woman who ascended to the papal throne while posing as a man. First of all, there's the idea of a woman ascending to the papal throne, which is endlessly intriguing. Then there's the other part of her myth, which involved her having a secret lover and a child before she was discovered and torn apart by a vicious mob. Last and hardly least, John Goodman plays her successor, Pope Sergius III, who is the only pope thought to have ordered the murder of a another. Pulpy! And of course the Vatican hates it. So when can we see it in the U.S.?...

A new German language movie, Pope Joan, starring Baader-Meinhof Complex’s Johanna Wokalek has caused a bit of a stink with Catholic priests and bishops in Italy this week.
You’d think they’d be more outraged with the lurid actions of some of their own than have time to whinge about a new movie based on the medieval legend of a female pope.
Yes, that is what has got their goat. A no-tail pope! One newspaper, albeit one for priests, said the film held an:
“extremely limited vision.”
The film directed by Sönke Wortman, based on an American novel, also stars John Goodman as Pope Sergius and David Wenham as Pope Joan’s lover (although he looks exactly like his character in Lord of the Rings). Now you might be thinking the history of Roman popes was a pure as the driven snow, but you’d be dead wrong.

Pope Joan, which depicts a female pontiff rumoured to have existed in the ninth century, has been criticised by the Roman Catholic Church for its 'extremely limited vision'
Blockbuster Hollywood films such as The Da Vinci Code, and its prequel, Angels and Demons, have often fallen foul of the Vatican in recent years. Now a new movie looks set to spark anger in the Holy See due to its depiction of a female pontiff.
Pope Joan, based on American novelist Donna Woolfolk Cross's book of the same name, stars German actor Johanna Wokalek as the titular character, with Lord of the Rings' David Wenham as the lover who supposedly brought her to Rome, and Us actor John Goodman as Pope Sergius. The film is based on persistent rumours – denied by the Roman Catholic Church and, to be fair, the majority of historians – that a female pope existed in the ninth century.

Cannes -- Cannes may be the celebration of Le Cinema, but increasingly, European filmmakers are turning to the small screen to get their movies made.
Oliver Assayas' Out of Competition entry "Carlos," which had its first market screening Saturday ahead of its festival bow, is just the latest in a flood of hybrid productions that span the gap between film and TV.
Examples include Swedish crime sensation "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," the critically acclaimed Brit noir trilogy "Red Riding" or German Oscar contender "The Baader Meinhof Complex." All were made simultaneously as films and as TV series, giving producers a double-dip of commission cash and film subsidies to build their budget.

Cologne, Germany -- Leading German indie producer/distributor Constantin Film has extended its first look deal with Cologne-based operation Little Shark Entertainment for a further two years.
Little Shark was behind period drama "Pope Joan" starring Johanna Wokalek, David Wenham and John Goodman. Based on the Donna W. Cross bestseller on the legend of 9th-century female Pope, the film was one of Constantin's biggest hits of 2009, scoring $25 million at the German boxoffice.
Little Shark principles, director Sonke Wortmann and producer Tom Spiess, are also an established force in non-fiction. They produced Germany's most successful non-fiction film, the soccer documentary "Germany -- a Summer Fairytale," (2006) which grossed some $35 million in its home territory.
