In an industry saturated with superhero movies, Hancock is perhaps the weirdest of them all, and Charlize Theron, for one, is proud to be its star. With an abundance of projects that range from epic (Avengers: Endgame) to vicious (The Dark Knight), from disturbing (The Boys) to hilarious (Deadpool), from solemn (Joker) to cringeworthy (Batman & Robin), there exists a space for films outside Marvel and DC for films like The Crow and Kick-Ass to thrive without getting stampeded on by the comic book industry.

Heath Ledger predicted the success of The Dark Knight before his death, Andrew Garfield shared this week.
Garfield said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he and the late actor crossed paths shortly after Ledger finished filming Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
“He was so smug about it,” Garfield said of Ledger talking about his time on Nolan’s set. “I was like, ‘How did that go?’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, it’s really good.’”
Ledger died at age 28 of an accidental drug overdose about six months before the release of The Dark Knight, but his predictive powers turned out to be true: The film broke several box office records, and the Joker star earned a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

When "Terrifier 2" arrived in 2022, it signaled the arrival of a new horror star. Though Art the Clown, the homicidal harlequin at the center of the film, had already appeared in a couple short films and 2016's "Terrifier," it wasn't until the sequel arrived and gained notoriety for its sheer barbarity that Art began to truly permeate pop culture. Now, with "Terrifier 3" set to debut having already caused walkouts during its opening scene, it looks as though Art is well on his way to becoming this generation's slasher superstar.
Much of the cultural caché accumulated by this particular slasher killer is down to actor David Howard Thornton, the man who has played Art since the character's solo film debut in 2016. After landing the gig due to some nasty improv during his audition, Thornton went on to define Art as a voiceless, unstoppable killing machine with a grim sense of...

Even in his portrayal of the Joker, Christopher Nolan found the influence of time and distortions of matter playing a huge part. In The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger created history with his Oscar-winning portrayal of the Batman villain. But for Nolan, the movie was the culmination of a nightmare that chased him for decades since he was a teenager.

In many ways, Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is rightfully considered the best Batman adaptation to exist on screen. But it doesn’t merely constitute a comic book story brought to life. Nolan’s films take inspiration from the triptychs of Francis Bacon, the 20th-century painter who used his canvas to bring raw and unsettling images to life.
The Dark Knight movies mirrored those triptychs. The 3-part story that delved into the rise of a hero, the fight between good and evil,...

Following the massive success of his recent biopic, Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight trilogy director Christopher Nolan is staying at Universal for his next project, which has now officially set a July 17, 2026 release date.
Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but Matt Damon - who previously worked with Nolan on Oppenheimer and Interstellar - is reportedly in talks to play the lead role.
The studio is being incredibly secretive about this untitled film, and the trades can't even get a straight answer about which genre it falls into.

The first Joker movie came out in 2019 and made over a billion dollars at the box office. After a success like that, a sequel was inevitable. Joker: Folie à Deux came out this past weekend, and it has been overwhelmingly rejected by audiences and critics alike. The box office has tanked, the reviews are brutal, and everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is scrambling to figure out what the hell happened.
The Hollywood Reporter has sniffed around for answers. Some fun things it's uncovered:
After the success of the first film, director Todd Phillips was given a large amount of creative control on this project. Phillips spent opening weekend "in seclusion" on a ranch he owns. Probably a good call. There was no test screening for this film, which is unusual for a movie that costs this much; Folie à Deux cost $200 million to make.If you're wondering where in the hell all that money went,...

The Dark Knight's Christopher Nolan Was Not on Board with Joker 2's Original Ending
Prior to the premiere of Joker: Folie à Deux, an anonymous source had leaked the disappointing ending even DC fans couldn't believe was true.
Instead of having Arthur Fleck end his story, well, as the Joker, still, he still ends up with nothing. Not with "Lee" Quinn, and certainly not his legacy as one of Gotham's "villains.

Christopher Nolan is staying put at Universal, with the filmmaker setting his next film at his Oppenheimer studio. His Oppenheimer supporting player Matt Damon is also in talks to star in the feature, which has a release date of July 17, 2026, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The news comes amid speculation as to where and when Nolan would make his next feature. He publicly split with longtime home Warner Bros. in late 2020 amid its controversial Project Popcorn initiative, but has expressed an openness over the past year to do business with the studio again.
The new movie is a coup for Universal, which scooped up Nolan for Oppenheimer. The film exceeded expectations at the box office and earned Nolan his first Oscars, for directing and as a producer for best picture. It took home five other wins.

Despite everything that's been going on with Joker: Folie à Deux this week, a case can easily be made for 2019's Joker being one of the best comic book movies ever made.
It certainly left a lasting impression, anyway, with a nail-biting final act featuring Arthur Fleck becoming "Joker" and gunning down talk show host Murray Franklin. His actions inspired Gotham City's disenfranchised to rise up and riot, leading to the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne.
As for Arthur, he was freed from captivity and gleefully watched the chaos unfold while smearing the blood on his face into the shape of a smile (we'd later learn Joker was captured and sent to Arkham).
There have been rumblings for years that original plans called for Arthur to use a knife to cut a smile across his face. Now, that's been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Here's an excerpt from the...

While die-hard fans may primarily remember Timothée Chalamet for his early role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, the actor is now a household name and in high demand across Hollywood.
Following his standout performances in Oscar-nominated films like Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and Little Women, Chalamet has landed major roles in blockbuster projects. His latest endeavors, Dune and Wonka, have both achieved significant success.
Given his popularity, it’s no surprise that Chalamet can afford to be selective with his projects. When you’re in such high demand, you have the luxury of choosing roles without the pressure of accepting just any offer.
In this context, Chalamet was recently asked by The New York Times about the possibility of appearing in a superhero film—a genre he has yet to explore.

Even if his early role in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is what die-hard fans would remember most about Timothée Chalamet, the actor is today in high demand worldwide and a household name in Hollywood.
Following his triumphant roles in the Oscar-nominated films Lady Bird, Call Me by Your Name, and Little Women, Chalamet has secured major motion picture roles. The Dune trilogy and Wonka, his two most recent projects, have both become enormous hits.
It is understandable that Chalamet is an actor who can pick his projects. When you’re in such high demand, you – of course – get the opportunity to choose what you want to do without the pressure of having to play just about any role.
In light of that, Chalamet has recently been asked by The New York Times about his potential appearance in a superhero movie, a genre the young actor has not yet been in.

Joker: Folie à Deux Report Reveals Controversial Ending Was Originally Part of the First Movie - Main Image
A new report revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux's controversial ending was originally planned for the first film.

While ending a movie like that might be seen as bold and gutsy, it is clear that the general audience has rejected the idea and it has become the subject of online discourse with different interpretations on what it might have implied.

The general reception to the ending of Joker: Folie à Deux has been a complete 180 to that of the first film, which saw Phoenix’s Arthur smearing blood on his mouth to create a smile. While the scene was commended by fans and critics, Todd Phillips’ original plan for the scene would’ve been more in line with The Dark Knight.

While one can go back on forth over the best incarnations of Jokers onscreen, it’s important to acknowledge that each interpretation so far isn’t exactly similar to one another.

Todd Phillips' "Joker: Folie à Deux" is a fascinating animal. It's slow, depressive, turgid, and far too long at 139 minutes. It's a musical, but the musical numbers feel lazy and disinterested; no one seems to be moved to passion by the songs they're crooning. And yet, it comes to a fascinatingly deconstructionist conclusion. At the end of the film — not to give anything away — Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) comes to a pretty bleak conclusion about being the Joker, finding that his chaotic clown fantasy isn't all that appealing. This is galling to his would-be girlfriend Lee (Lady Gaga) who is all too eager to become a criminal clown herself. Phillips seems eager to rip down the myth of the Joker, and superhero cinema in general. More than ever before, it feels like the genre is at an end.

[This story contains spoilers for Joker: Folie a Deux.]
Is anyone out there laughing? It seems very few are, given the dismal reception to Todd Phillips’ Joker: Folie a Deux, the follow-up to his $1 billion-hit, Joker (2019), which was nominated for 11 Oscars and won best actor and best original score. A sequel with Phoenix reprising his role as Joker/Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn seemed like one of Hollywood’s safest bets this year, despite Joker not setting up a narrative to be continued.
So, what gives?
The sequel hasn’t just been met with disappointment, but also a sense of betrayal from some fans of the first. There are certainly issues upon which your mileage may vary: the film is at times sluggish, the jukebox tunes are largely mid-20th century tracks with multiple reprises, and Phillips demonstrates a lack of commitment to cinematic musicals (and an unexpected commitment to ’70s variety...

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 promised a visual spectacle that continues Arthur Fleck’s story from the first film. However, it ended up being very divisive among the fans. Todd Phillips probably made the boldest or dumbest attempt, depending on who you ask, with his latest film. The ratings of the film are plummeting at a fast rate, even dropping below some infamous DC films.

When Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" was released in the summer of 1992, a number of fans and critics remarked how little screen time Michael Keaton's Dark Knight had in the movie, with so much real estate given over to Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and Danny DeVito's Penguin. While this unevenness was already the case in the first "Batman," most people assumed that Jack Nicholson's star power being bigger than Keaton's at the time accounted for that. For "Returns," the narrative became that Burton was simply more interested in the colorful, audacious villain characters than the goody two-shoes Dark Knight.
However, as the 30-plus years have demonstrated since the release of "Batman Returns," the open secret about the character of Batman and the films he appears in is that all of his villains — and, if applicable, his allies — are a reflection of himself.

Christian Bale is considered to be one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. The actor has been in the industry for over three decades, cementing his reputation through his credible acting.
However, the credit for his stellar exposure in the industry lies with iconic director Steven Spielberg. It was his 1987 war film, Empire of the Sun which gave a 13-year-old Bale his big break. Most fans don’t know that this opportunity came purely due to luck being with Spielberg at the time of the making of the film.

Joker: Folie À Deux is now in theaters, and while the ending of Todd Phillips' musical sequel has proven to be highly divisive (much like the rest of the movie), one particular moment has led to some speculation that the events of this film could connect to Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.
Major spoilers follow.
Folie À Deux concludes with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) returning to serve out his sentence in Arkham after initially going on the run following a car bomb explosion outside the courtroom. Fleck catches up with Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), but when she rejects him for renouncing his Joker persona, he allows the cops to take him back to the institution.
After being told that he has a visitor, Arthur makes his way down the corridor before being stopped by a clearly unstable young inmate played by Connor Storie,...

Joaquin Phoenix dons his clown makeup once again in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the follow-up to his Oscar-winning performance from 2019. This time, he’s joined by fellow Oscar winner Lady Gaga, who plays another iconic DC Comics villain, Harley Quinn.
The comic book sequel takes place after the events of “Joker,” with Phoenix’s killer clown Arthur Fleck on trial for the murders he committed in the first movie. His lawyer, played by Catherine Keener, argues that Arthur and Joker are two different people. She claims that after years of childhood abuse, Arthur developed an alter-ego that’s separate from his own mind. The prosecution is led by assistant district attorney Harvey Dent, played by “Industry” star Harry Lawtey, who’s later known as the disfigured villain Two Face in the Batman comics.

Yes, “Joker: Folie à Deux” is a mess. Yes, it is a lackluster follow-up to 2019’s “Joker” that made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide. Let’s just say that Joaquin Phoenix definitely won’t be winning a Best Actor Oscar for this sequel.
But, what “Joker: Folie à Deux” does do is position itself as a so-baffling-it’s-amazing soon-to-be cult classic. And this also might not be the last of this particular “Joker” universe created by director and co-writer Todd Phillips, as the film serves a trio of origin stories for other villains, for better or for worse.
Sure, Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck is dead, but as we soon learn, he never really was The Joker after all. Arthur is an empathic, mentally ill character who became a larger-than-life symbol, so much so that he couldn...

This article contains some spoilers for "Joker: Folie à Deux."
The two "Joker" films directed by Todd Phillips, 2019's "Joker" and this month's "Joker: Folie à Deux," are movies primarily centered around the Joker (played by Joaquin Phoenix), as the titles suggest. Although these are two comic book films that can genuinely be called character studies, that doesn't mean that Phillips and his collaborators leave out other famous figures from the "Batman" comic books. The first film featured Thomas Wayne aka Batman's dad in a key supporting role (not to mention an appearance of the future Dark Knight himself as a youngster), but "Folie à Deux" involves Harley Quinn as a major co-lead, played by none other than Lady Gaga. Although neither of these movies are interested in setting up future characters or storylines, that doesn't mean Phillips and company can't throw in a handful of Easter eggs here and there.

Thanks to the long history of comic book characters, there are often many fan theories circulating about any given comic book movie, especially after the first trailer has been unveiled. Fans pick up on the most minute details, using them to fuel predictions about where the plot is headed or which characters are waiting in the wings to be revealed. Sometimes they're right on the money, thanks to a rich background of details to pull from Marvel, DC Comics, etc. But for every fan theory that's right, there are dozens that are just plain ridiculous and unnecessary. It should come as no surprise that "Joker: Folie à Deux" has inspired plenty of fan theories leading up to its release, but there's one fan theory that has only just emerged with the release of the movie.

With all due respect to Bozo and Pennywise, pop culture’s most popular clown is probably Joker, Batman’s archvillain who started making the Caped Crusader’s life hell back in 1940. That’s when the so-called Clown Prince of Crime first appeared in comic books, quickly becoming the Caped Crusader’s top nemesis — and, along the way, the most iconic of all superhero baddies. When Tim Burton hatched his Batman in 1989, the Joker was the villain. The most acclaimed and commercially successful of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy was The Dark Knight, which featured Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker. Jared Leto’s Joker in Suicide Squad was universally loathed — as was the film — but even that movie made bank. And, of course, 2019’s Joker brought in more than a billion dollars worldwide, going on to win Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar. We as a society may be racked with a fear of clowns,...

Joker: Folie à Deux is set in the same universe as Batman, technically. It takes place in Gotham City, and obviously the Joker is one of Batman's most famous enemies. But Batman himself doesn't really appear in these Joker movies, save a young Bruce Wayne turning up in the first film. Also, at the end of Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, is stabbed to death in prison by a man identified in the credits only as "Young Inmate," played by Connor Storrie. So obviously Joaquin Phoenix isn't going to be fighting Batman anytime soon.
One explaination is that these Joker movies borrow things from the Batman mythos but don't actually take place in that same universe. Maybe this is a world where the Joker rises and falls without ever actually encountering the Caped Crusader. But there might be a way for the movies to have their cake and eat it,...

It may be tough to remember now -- we've all lived so many lives since then! -- but when "Joker" was released in 2019, the film sparked concerns that it could lead to violence. Director Todd Phillips questioned the backlash, comparing his film to "John Wick" and telling the Associated Press, "Why does this movie get held to different standards? It honestly doesn't make sense to me." The film, after all, was about a white man committing extreme violence because he felt shafted by society, and in the thick of the Donald Trump administration, it felt like Joker could prove to be a hero to a certain subsection of the population.
"Joker" didn't, of course, lead to mass outbreaks of comic book clown-inspired movie theater violence. The movie went on to break a billion dollars, and it won two Oscars out of eleven nominations: one for Joaquin Phoenix's lead performance...

Last year, we heard that Spyder Dobrofsky – who worked on the scripts for such flicks as The Housewives of the North Pole and One Christmas Wish, as well as Mom’s Day Away, and made his feature directorial debut with the mystery thriller Spiral – was making a holiday horror movie called Down Below and had assembled a solid cast for the project: the legendary Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight) stars alongside Bai Ling (The Crow), Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect), and Doug Jones, who is best known for his creature (or heavily made up) performances in films like The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Hocus Pocus. Now, Down Below has been sent out into the world, as it was given a digital release this week and is available to rent or purchase on Amazon’s Prime Video at This Link.

After Dune hit theaters in 2021, Dune: Part Two became one of the biggest movie events this year and is highly anticipated for the next Oscars. When Denis Villeneuve announced a new sequel, fans went wild, especially those who have read the books. Since it’s a saga, many expect the adaptation to keep going all the way to the last book.

However, Villeneuve has made it clear that he doesn’t plan to do anything else in the universe after the third movie, and if that’s the case, he really needs to wrap up Paul Atreides’ story properly. Maybe he can learn from Christopher Nolan’s experience, as he spent over a decade handling fans’ hopes for more Batman movies.

The first time two different actors won Oscars for portraying the same character was when Marlon Brando won for playing Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather and Robert De Niro won for playing his younger version in The Godfather Part II. It didn’t happen again for over four decades until Joaquin Phoenix won for playing Arthur Fleck in Joker, following Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Clown Prince of Crime in The Dark Knight.

Many would argue that the two variations are not the same character. Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival will hand its Special Award for a Production Designer to six-time Oscar nominee Nathan Crowley during this year’s edition, which runs November 16-23 in Toruń.
Crowley is perhaps best known internationally for his longtime collaboration with Christopher Nolan. He has received five Oscar nods for his collaborations with the British filmmaker. Their films include Tenet, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, Interstellar, and The Prestige. Crowley was also nominated for Damien Chazelle’s First Man.
Beginning his career at the Brighton School of Art in the UK, Crowley moved to Hollywood in the 1990s where he landed a Second Unit Art Director role on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He then worked on films by directors like Barry Levinson and Joel Schumacher. His first collaboration with Christopher Nolan was on Insomnia.

Poland’s pioneering EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival revealed Tuesday that industry veteran Nathan Crowley will receive a special award for achievement in production design at the event’s upcoming 32nd edition in Toruń.
Crowley is best known for his long-running collaboration with Christopher Nolan, which earned him Oscar nominations for production design on The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet (he also was nominated for Damien Chazelle’s First Man). On the small screen, he picked up an Emmy nomination for his work on the HBO series Westworld. By no means slowing down, his recent work includes the adaptations of Wonka and Wicked 1 & 2, and he is next booked to design the new Avengers films for the Russo Brothers at Marvel Films.
“Known for his practical approach to production design, Crowley excels at creating immersive, detailed worlds, blending traditional and modern techniques,” Camerimage organizers said in a statement.

"Batman: The Animated Series" wound up being as definitive an account of the Dark Knight as its title suggested. So when a new Batman cartoon finally came afterwards, it was destined to never escape the shadow of "Btas." But "The Batman" (which aired from 2004 to 2008) made a noble effort and remains one of the more unique spins on the Caped Crusader.
"The Batman," developed by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi, was the first animated Batman in 12 years that was unconnected to the DC Animated Universe (The shared setting that began with "Batman: The Animated Series" and concluded with "Justice League Unlimited").
Bruce Wayne in "The Batman" was voiced by Rino Romano, and Joker by Kevin Michael Richardson, rather than the beloved Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker duo. Bruce Timm modeled "Batman: The Animated Series" on the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons, while Jeff Matsuda gave Gotham City an anime makeover.
