Director Baghdasaryan reportedly searched for two years for an actress who could play the role of Mariam. He wanted to find someone who could not only learn sign language for the role, but could also make contact with deaf children. After auditioning women from half a dozen countries, he finally chose an unknown actress, Janet Hovannesian.
