Josh Brolin is looking back on a tense moment he had with Denzel Washington on the set of American Gangster.
In an interview on the In Depth with Graham Bensinger, the Dune: Part Two actor recalled a moment when he said he felt he and Washington were going to get into an altercation.
“Denzel and I, by the way, get along very well now,” he said before sharing the anecdote from set. “We almost got into a fight.”
In the 2007 film, Brolin played Detective Trupo, who is investigating Washington’s character Frank Lucas, a Harlem drug dealer in the ’60s and ’70s. While filming, there was a heated moment Brolin alleged after Washington changed Brolin’s line for a scene at the last minute.
“Denzel was a little late to set and there was a whole thing there,” Brolin said. “And then he showed me the lines … he didn’t change any of my lines,...

Despite the first Dune movie picking up a nomination for Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards, Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director. Understandably, this didn't sit very well with a lot of people - including star Josh Brolin.
Brolin, who played loyal Atreides War Master Gurney Halleck in both movies, was very vocal about Villeneuve being overlooked the first time, and is even more adamant that the filmmaker should be recognized by the Academy for his work on recent sequel, Dune: Part Two.
“If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting,” Brolin tells Variety. “It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”

Three years after the tragic on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Alec Baldwin’s indie Western Rust was finally unveiled before the public on Wednesday. The film received a warm reception from a supportive crowd at Poland’s Camerimage Film Festival, an industry-favorite event that famously highlights the craft of cinematography.
Prior to the premiere, Rust‘s director Joel Souza and Bianca Cline, the cinematographer who stepped in after a wrongful death lawsuit was settled, participated in an in-depth feature with The Hollywood Reporter to share their story of returning to set a year and a half after the accident to complete the movie. The Rust team and one of Hutchins’ filmmaker friends gave impassioned speeches at the premiere in Poland, explaining how they continued working on the film only because the potential financial gain from its theatrical release would benefit the late cinematographer’s widower and son.

We first heard that Cape Fear was being adapted for the small screen last year, and the trades have now announced that Apple TV+ has ordered a 10-episode series with Nick Antosca on board as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
The project also has two filmmaking legends involved, with Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese set to executive produce.
One of the lead roles has been cast, with Javier Bardem set to play Max Cady.
Bardem has some experience playing remorseless killers after his Academy Award-winning turn as Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men. Cady is undoubtedly an even more twisted and vile character, however, so it will be interesting to see what Bardem brings to the role following Robert De Niro's iconic performance.

Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese’s planned remake of Cape Fear is set to star Javier Bardem, it’s been revealed.
The first ever television collaboration between cinema giants, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg is moving forwards with a mighty casting announcement: Javier Bardem will be taking the lead role in an upcoming small screen remake of Cape Fear.
The report, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, states that Bardem will take on the role of the unhinged stalker Max Cady, the narrative’s charismatic but psychopathic antagonist. Bardem’s casting sees him join a short but distinguished list of actors who have graced the role: Robert Mitchum played Cady in the 1962 film and Robert De Niro portrayed the character in Scorsese’s pulpy 1991 take.

Stephen King‘s “Constant Readers” have read about the character Holly Gibney in the pages of his Bill Hodges trilogy, the novel The Outsider, the If It Bleeds short story from the collection of the same name, and his crime novel Holly. Now, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Holly is also at the heart of his next novel, Never Flinch, which is set to reach store shelves on May 27, 2025.
A couple of years ago, King told The Kingcast hosts Eric Vespe and Scott Wampler, “I could never let Holly Gibney go from the Mr. Mercedes books. I mean, she was supposed to be a walk-on character and she just kind of stole the book and stole my heart.” Obviously, Holly still has his heart. Javier Bardem is a wonderful actor, a man whose filmography is filled with a diverse array of characters whose appearances span the genre spectrum. He is also, it would be fair to say, an actor who's really good at playing villainous psychopaths — be it No Country For Old Men's Anton Chigurh, Skyfall's Silva, Pirates Of The Caribbean's Captain Salazar, or Lyle, Lyle Crocodile's mendacious Hector P. Valenti. And according to Deadline, another unhinged wrong'un is now in Bardem's sights, as he has signed on to play the notorious killer Max Cady in the latest retooling of Cape Fear, which Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Nick Antosca are currently setting up at Apple TV.

On Monday, Nov. 18, Apple TV+ announced a new 10-episode series adaptation of “Cape Fear,” executive produced by and starring Javier Bardem as Max Cady, a killer who gets out of prison and haunts the lives of married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden. Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese are also onboard as executive producers.
The series is based on the 1957 novel “The Executioners,” which was previously adapted into the 1962 “Cape Fear” starring Robert Mitchum as Max Cady and Gregory Peck as Sam Bowden. That film was remade in 1991 by Scorsese, whose version starred Robert De Niro in an Oscar-nominated performance as Cady. Nick Nolte and Jessica Lange played the Bowdens, while Juliette Lewis earned a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nom for her role as the Bowdens’ teenage daughter Danielle.

Back in 2023, Apple TV+ officially ordered a series adaptation of ‘Cape Fear.’ The show is set to adapt Universal’s 1991 remake of a 1962 film under the same name, which was in turn based on the 1957 novel ‘The Executioner’ written by John D. MacDonald.
The film is about a convicted rapist who uses his knowledge of the law and its loopholes to seek revenge on a former public defender. He blames the lawyer for his 14-year prison sentence, claiming the lawyer purposely sabotaged his defense during the trial.
The series is being developed by UCP and Amblin. It will be the first TV project that Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg worked on together. They are executive producers along with showrunner Nick Antosca, who has worked on shows like ‘Channel Zero’ and ‘The Act.’ Other executive producers include Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin, and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat.

At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now, Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner – and Deadline reports that Javier Bardem has signed on to play the villainous Max Cady in this new take on the story!

Apple TV+ has given a formal green light to Cape Fear, a TV series executive produced by two Oscar winners, Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. They are joined by a third, Javier Bardem, who will star and executive produce.
Created by Nick Antosca (The Act), Cape Fear is based on both John D. MacDonald’s novel “The Executioners” — which inspired the 1962 feature of the same name directed by J. Lee Thompson from storyboards devised by original director Alfred Hitchcock — as well as the 1991 remake directed by Scorsese.
In the 10-episode series, described as a tense, Hitchcockian thriller and an examination of America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Amanda and Steve Bowden when Max Cady (played by Bardem), a notorious killer from their past, gets out of prison.

Known for his roles in No Country for Old Men and Avengers, the 56-year-old shares his experience with addiction, violence, and ultimately, personal growth.

He described how the knife struck his belly button, “the densest ligament in the body, and it slowed the knife down enough to stop it from hitting any vitals.”
During this frightening time, Brolin was with his wife, Kathryn, who handed him his phone so he could call his ex-wife, Alice Adair, with whom he shares two children.
Reflecting on the conversation, Brolin wrote, “She’ll talk to the kids about what I loved most about them… and how I know they’ll grow into a future that they can feel proud of.

Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fitting Criterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs to Cecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol, Barbara Loden, and Samuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside the Bob Dylan doc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,” a series featuring Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close to Freddy Got Fingered for least-expected 2024 addition) Jackass: the Movie.

Nearly 40 years later, Josh Brolin still remembers Steven Spielberg‘s advice from the set of The Goonies.
Recounting the 1985 film as “probably the greatest experience of my life,” the Oscar nominee revealed what the producer told him on the set of the Richard Donner-helmed adventure comedy.

Spielberg had a more straightforward approach to the script, which he developed with writer Chris Columbus. “He looked at me, and he goes, ‘Yeah, just act. Just say what’s on the page.’ He wasn’t being an a—hole, he was right,” said Brolin.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “Emilia Pérez.”]
“Emilia Pérez” begins and ends in darkness — literally and figuratively.
The latter comes courtesy of writer/director Jacques Audiard and his audacious script, which delves deeply into the prisons we make for ourselves and for others based on expectations, perceptions, and self-deceptions. As Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofia Gascón) transitions from cartel boss to a champion of those whose lives were lost to cartels, her attorney Rita (Zoe Saldana) matures into a woman with a satisfyingly successful career but a wisp of a personal life, and Emilia’s ex-wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) — who does not know that Emilia has undergone gender-affirming surgery — steps from a gilded cage into one even more dangerous. As their lives and relationships intersect and collide, cinematographer Paul Guilhaume takes the film from dark to sunny to a dark night of the soul come to life in the desert.

“Emilia Pérez” begins and ends in darkness — literally and figuratively.
The latter comes courtesy of writer/director Jacques Audiard and his audacious script, which delves deeply into the prisons we make for ourselves and for others based on expectations, perceptions, and self-deceptions. Netflix isn’t always keen to give its movies a substantial release in theaters, but Daniel Craig hopes they’ll make an exception for Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The actor told Variety that he hopes the third Knives Out film gets to play in theaters for longer than a single week, which is all Netflix gave Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
“You know I do,” Craig said. “Hopefully, Netflix will push it out a bit, and people will get to see it. The people I speak to — the fans, I suppose — all they want to do is take their families and go see it at the cinemas. That’s all they want to do. Hopefully we can give them that experience.” Wake Up Dead Man is slated to debut on Netflix in 2025 but doesn’t have an official release date, so there’s still plenty...

As HBO's Lanterns series continues to round out its supporting cast, the latest addition is an actor who has played numerous memorable roles over the years, Garret Dillahunt.
According to Deadline, Dillahunt will play a villain, but his character doesn't appear to be anyone we might know from the comics.
Described as a "modern cowboy," William Macon is a "a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade."
Dillahunt has a lot of experience playing villains, with appearances in the likes of The Last House on the Left, Looper, and HBO's Deadwood, in which he played two completely different characters (really three if you count his cameo in the movie).
Dillahunt joins the recently cast Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry, Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan.
Nexus Point News first reported that Dillahunt was in talks,...

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Across the River and Into the Trees (Paula Ortiz)
Hemingway’s work across novels and short stories has been adapted for film countless times over, yet Across the River and Into the Trees has never properly been rendered onscreen. Until now. Written by Peter Flannery and directed by Paula Ortiz, here is a handsome film that is decidedly modest in its endeavor. The best thing going for it is Liev Schreiber as Colonel Richard Cantwell, the lead of the picture. Schreiber is one of those actors who has somehow always been underrated, despite being capable of playing nearly any kind of part. A kind boyfriend thrust into an impossible familial situation (The Daytrippers)? Check. Tough-but-fractured fixer living on the edge (Ray Donovan)? Check.

Considered one of the best films of the Coen brother’s filmography, No Country for Old Men won several accolades on its release. The neo-Western crime thriller starred Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin together with Tommy Lee Jones and was based on Cormac McCarthy’s 2005 novel.
Bardem’s performance as the bold hitman Anton Chigurh was praised by the viewers and critics alike. However, the actor’s reason for greenlighting the script would surprise fans. The actor mentioned feeling out of place for the savage role until he saw the haircut they wanted for his character, the ridiculous get-up made him say yes.

After making her directorial debut Woman of the Hour, Anna Kendrick is donating her earnings to survivors of sexual abuse.
While opening up about the Netflix true-crime thriller, the Oscar nominee explained why she felt “gross” being paid for a film about ‘The Dating Game Killer’ Rodney Alcala‘s victims and survivors.
“Believe me, this was never a money-making venture for me, because all the resources went to actually making the movie,” she explained on the Crime Junkie Af podcast.
In addition to directing, Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles who finds herself courted by a serial killer (Daniel Zovatto) in the midst of a years-long killing spree, when they cross paths as contestants on popular game show The Dating Game.
“It wasn’t until the week before TIFF that I thought ‘Oh, the movie is going to make money,'” she added. “I went from being like,...

By Green Lantern’s light, no evil shall escape Kelly Macdonald’s sight as she joins DC’s Lanterns series. Known for her starring role as Margaret Thompson in Boardwalk Empire, Carla Jean Moss in No Country for Old Men, and the voice of Merida in Disney’s Brave, Macdonald joins the series to play Sheriff Kerry, a “no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town.” Hardened by a complicated past, Sheriff Kerry answers the call when her community’s secrets start bubbling to the surface. While not confirmed, Sheriff Kerry may be a love interest for Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan.
Chris Mundy (Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer and will co-write the series alongside Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers) and Tom King (Supergirl), who will also executive produce. James Hawes, a prolific TV director best known for Black Mirror and Slow Horses, will helm the first two episodes.

Confirming a recent casting rumor, the trades are reporting that Kelly Macdonald has now officially signed on for a supporting role in HBO's Lanterns series.
We had heard that the Scottish actress - who has appeared in the likes of Trainspotting, No Country for Old Men and Boardwalk Empire - was up for the role of Hal Jordan's love-interest, which led to speculation that she might be playing Star Sapphire.
While her character is expected to become romantically involved with Jordan, she doesn't appear to be playing an established DC Comics hero or villain.
According to THR, Macdonald will play Sheriff Kerry, "a no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town. Her resilience, shaped by a complex past that’s hardened her resolve, anchors her when the community’s secrets begin to surface."
Macdonald joins Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Hal Jordan.

If there's one thing Stephen King knows pretty well, it's villains. The prolific horror author has been writing basically nonstop since he released "Carrie," his debut novel, back in 1974, and his work has been endlessly adapted for both the big and small screen. In 2009, he even compiled a list of his favorite villains that he didn't create, and it's a pretty solid rundown — which certainly isn't surprising.
From literary icons to on-screen favorites to a villain with a confusingly familiar name — I'll clarify that whole thing when we arrive at that point — here are Stephen King's top ten villains of all time, whom he ranked for Entertainment Weekly at the close of the aughts. King ranked his top 10 from "least villainous" to "most villainous," apparently, so we've preserved that order here.

Production designer Jess Gonchor has worked on some of the most acclaimed and rewatchable movies over the last two decades, including every feature film directed by Bennett Miller, every Joel and Ethan Coen movie from “No Country for Old Men” through “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and notable one-off titles such as “The Devil Wears Prada,” Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise,” and John Krasinski’s recent hit “If.”
“To be a production designer, you have to become an expert in a subject in a very short amount of time. So when I get a job on something, I start researching it immediately,” Gonchor tells Gold Derby.
But for his latest project, Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” Gonchor was already well-versed in the material. The film is about the first-ever “Saturday Night Live” episode and unfolds in real-time as the clock hits 11:30 p.m. on...

Movies Like Woman of the Hour on Netflix: Anna Kendrick has been working in Hollywood for over two decades, mainly known for her performances in comedy-dramas like “Pitch Perfect” and her Oscar-nominated turn in Jason Reitman’s “Up in the Air“. Now, with “Woman of the Hour,” she steps in as a director of a dark, psychological thriller. The film revolves around Sheryl Bradshaw, a young aspiring actress from the 70s, who entered a reality television show to find her next date. She was supposed to choose someone from the three male contestants trying to woo her.
One of these suitors was serial killer Rodney Alcala, who charmed Sheryl enough to select him as her date. As the film follows her journey, it offers glimpses into Rodney’s past encounters with his victims and survivors. It alternates between these different stories to give us a sense of his personality...

As major releases continue to hit big screens, 2024 is shaping to be an important year for showbiz and the box-office. Countless conversations continue to cover pandemic recovery, nevertheless, Hollywood now has another pebble in its shoe – can it weather the aftermath of the 2023 Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes? So far, things seem to be picking up slowly, but not necessarily at the box-office.
Although the year has seen bright spots early on—like the success of Dune: Part Two—there have also been a slew of disappointments. While films like Madame Web and Furiosa managed to break even on the back of their production costs alone, they did ultimately become part of the financial disappointments when marketing expenses—which now run the risk of equalling the film’s production costs—are taken into account.

Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” has hit theaters nationwide, chronicling the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975, releasing on the 49th anniversary of the long-running sketch comedy on October 11. With this movie expected to be a contender at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards, let’s take a closer look at the filmmaker’s previous four Oscar nominations in three different categories for just two of his films.
After Reitman’s directorial debut in 2005 for “Thank You For Smoking,” he achieved commercial and critical success for his coming-of-age film “Juno” in 2007, starring Elliot Page as the titular teenage character who deals with her unexpected pregnancy and wants to give it up for adoption. Earlier this year, writer/director Rian Johnson got his latest film Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery – which, as you can glean from the title, is indeed the latest installment in the series of murder mysteries that Johnson began with Knives Out in 2019 and continued with Glass Onion in 2022 – through production. This time around, Craig’s co-stars include Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Josh O’Connor (Challengers), Glenn Close (Dangerous Liaisons), Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Kerry Washington (Scandal), Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3). In 2023, Austin Butler came pretty close to nabbing his first Oscar win, thanks to his immaculate portrayal of the King of Rock and Roll. But despite taking the Golden Globe accolade home, the actor ended up losing to Brendan Fraser in the race for Best Action at the 95th Academy Awards. With Dune 2 becoming one of the most acclaimed releases of the year, it seems The Bikeriders might be getting his second shot at the accolade.

Are you not entertained by this year’s exciting and unpredictable Oscar race? Well, you should be because Ridley Scott’s epic and potentially huge blockbuster sequel, “Gladiator II,” has exploded onto the scene following its first screening in Los Angeles in front of an audience of AMPAS and SAG voters.
The long-awaited sequel to best picture winner “Gladiator” (2000) is igniting the spark for Scott, its three-time Oscar-nominated director, to be in the running to win his long-coveted Academy Award. [Editor’s note: The following interview contains light spoilers for “Woman of the Hour.”]
When serial killer Rodney Alcala appeared on the hit game show “The Dating Game” in 1978, he was billed as one of three eligible bachelors competing for the affection of struggling actress Cheryl Bradshaw. Alcala ultimately won a date with Bradshaw, but the wily young woman refused to go out with him, mostly because she found him to be “creepy.”
She was right to feel that way: By the time of his appearance on the game show, Alcala had already killed at least five women, been listed as one of the FBI’s most wanted, and skipped his way around the country to avoid a variety of criminal investigations. “Creepy“? That was only the tip of the iceberg.
Such is the wild, horrifying true story at the heart of Anna Kendrick’s feature directorial debut (in which she also stars as Cheryl), “Woman of the Hour.” For screenwriter Ian McDonald,...

Spoiler Alert: This story contains minor spoilers for “Terrifier 3,” opening in theaters Friday.
Writer-director Damien Leone, the mastermind of the “Terrifier” series, is such an upbeat guy that, in another life, it’s easy to imagine him as a life coach, a trainer, a teacher. Conversation with him is peppered with lessons and inspiration that came to him through shooting his latest film, “Terrifier 3”:
“You never know where inspiration is going to hit you.”
“You have to go and make the quickest, best decisions you can.”
“I’ll pull him aside and say, ‘I’m literally feeling magic here. This is wonderful.’ And that doesn’t happen often.”
The other shoe drops when realizing that Leone’s positivity is in service of one of the goriest horror movies ever made. The unrated “Terrifier 3” unleashes the unhinged Art the Clown on Christmas, where he once again stalks...

We’ve seen vampires take many different forms over the years. We’ve got the more classic monster types and the more seductive, sexy types. As a big Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I’ve always liked a combination of both. Based on the 2010 novel of the same name, The Radleys follows a family in Britain as they try to hide the fact that they’re vampires. And I use the term vampire loosely because, while they may feature similar attributes, there are nearly just as many traits given to the vampires that don’t exactly fit the lore. I’m not sure I can ever jive with that style but those less into the horror side of things may get a kick out of it. While I loved some of the performances, the movie didn’t entirely land with me.
I talked to star Damian Lewis about his role(s) in The Radleys.
