Waterloo Road School is actually a recently-closed school in Rochdale. Formerly Thornham Middle School, and later Hill Top Primary School. The latter closed in 2005, with the school being used as the setting for the drama from that summer.
As of 2012 filming moved to Greenock, Scotland taking over the former Greenock Academy school building.
Tom confirms in 4x12 that Mika went to University after graduating form Waterloo Road at the end of series 3. The official website says that Brett went with her.
