Ahead of the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival beginning on Wednesday in Los Angeles, Netflix has announced new stand-up specials from seven comics: Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, Ali Wong, Jo Koy, Bert “The Machine” Kreischer, Deon Cole, Fortune Feimster and Michelle Buteau.
Iglesias has set two new specials, with one taping at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Fla. this July and another with details yet to come. These mark his fourth and fifth Netflix specials, following “Stadium Fluffy” (2022) — taped at a sold-out show during the inaugural Netflix Is a Joke that made him the first-ever comedian to perform at Dodger Stadium — as well as “One Show Fits All” (2019) and “I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry” (2016). Iglesias also starred in and executive produced the multi-cam comedy series “Mr. Iglesias,” which ran on Netflix for two seasons from 2019 to 2020.

The Golden Globes displayed a fair amount of consensus with the Recording Academy when it unveiled its first Golden Globe nominations for Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, giving nominations Monday to such recently Grammy-nominated comedians as Chris Rock, Wanda Sykes, Trevor Noah and Sarah Silverman.
Rock was nominated for Netflix’s Selective Outrage, which was certainly the most discussed special of the year given its kickoff of a livestreaming initiative for the service, as well as Rock’s long anticipated dissection of his altercation with Will Smith at the 94th Academy Awards, when Smith rose from the audience and slapped Rock on stage after a joke made at the expense of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jane Krakowski had one musical number in Season 1 of Apple TV+’s “Schmigadoon!” and she performed it from behind the wheel of a cramped convertible. It wasn’t much of a stage, but the Emmy nominee and musical theater veteran used every inch of the leather interior to sell her wistful yet seductive song, eventually wedging her high heel into the steering wheel to steady herself for the climatic high note.
The performance is proof that no number is too small for Krakowski. But series creator and Emmy-winning songwriter Cinco Paul wanted to give her more to do in Season 2, which puts the series’ central couple Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) on the seedy streets of Schmicago, inspired by 1960s and ’70s musicals like ”Chicago” and “Cabaret.”

Join in the cosmic cantata, and take a trip to Schmicago!
On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 3, Josh gets groovy with the hippies, Melissa meets the residents of Quick Street, and Bobby razzle-dazzles the courtroom.
It's so consistently impressive how much they cram into 30 minutes and still come up with a coherent narrative.
Cinco Paul's cleverness with lyrics comes into play in every song here. He's got internal rhymes up the shoobie-doobie, and the double meaning of "The Worst Brats In Town" -- sausages and children -- is just too good.
On Quick Street, we have Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth as Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett... er, Dooley Blight and Miss Codwell, who is also Miss Hannigan from Annie.
Cumming leans into the melodrama of Dooley Blight, evoking more sympathy than menace. Vocally, both of them are at ease with the weird intricacies of the Sondheimesque score.

“You can never return to Schmigadoon,” rasps Tituss Burgess in a new “Schmigadoon!” Season 2 trailer. “Welcome to Schmicago!” The new “first look” trailer from Apple TV+ then drops viewers into a darker, sexier musical pastiche than the candy-coated first season. Watch the full video above and then read on to dive into the smorgasbord of Broadway references hidden in this exciting sneak peek.
“As the high of Schmigadoon starts to wear off, the realities of life start to set in,” reveals Cecily Strong during a behind-the-scenes interview. It seems that the spark of romance her character Melissa experienced with Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) has begun to dissipate after leaving the world of Golden Age musicals. Josh has the idea to return to Schmigadoon in order to reignite their romance and sense of fun, but the couple is instead transported to a town inspired by musicals from the 1960s and 70s.

Last week, Gold Derby’s Tom O’Neil pointed out that Michelle Williams has become the top pick among Experts to win the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress Emmy for her stunning performance as Gwen Verdon on FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.” At the time, 10 of 19 Experts predicting had Williams at No. 1, but the number has now grown to 12 out of 20. And that figure, along with her overall odds, may keep on rising as more and more people catch up and realize just how much Williams slayed on a show nominally called “Fosse/Verdon,” but slowly morphed into The Verdon/Williams Show.
The “Fosse/Verdon” producers, a team that includes Steven Levenson, Thomas Kail, Joel Fields and Lin-Manuel Miranda, have repeatedly discussed how their desire to give Verdon her due was the spark for the series. A four-time Tony winner and a pioneering dancer, Verdon is a Broadway legend, but her name is rarely uttered these days.

According to page six, Michael Riedel's book, Razzle Dazzle, which was released last fall is set to get miniseries.Razzle Dazzle is a provocative, no-holds-barred narrative account of the people and the money and the power that re-invented an iconic quarter of New York City, turning its gritty back alleys and sex-shops into the glitzy, dazzling Great White Way-and bringing a crippled New York from the brink of bankruptcy to its glittering glory. Michael takes readers into what was at the time a seedy symbol of New York's economic decline, Times Square. Two men, Bernard Jacobs and Jerry Schoenfeld, transformed the collapsed theater district by taking over a crumbling theater company that became one of the most successful entertainment empires in the world and revitalized Times Square.

In the early 1980s, despite their previously long-running friendship, Broadway director, producer and choreographer Michael Bennett and fellow jack-of-all-trades on the Great White Way Tommy Tune, entered into what many consider the greatest face-off in Tony Awards history. Michael Riedel, writing for Vanity Fair, examines this rivalry between Dreamgirls and Nine in an adapted excerpt from his book Razzle Dazzle for the magazine's October 2015 issue.

The much-anticipated Manila premiere of Broadway's longest-running American musical, Chicago, razzle-dazzled audiences with its hard-hitting numbers All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle, which speak of passion, treachery, murder, and glossed-over celebrity, on opening night. Leading the pack of an all-American cast of Broadway veterans is Bianca Marroquin who rocked Solaire Resort and Casino's The Theatre with her multi-faceted portrayal of accused murderess Roxie Hart. The strong ensemble, while writhing, gyrating, and exploding to John Kander's music, provided the backdrop to Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse's dark satirical commentary of the 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. When the audience rose to a standing ovation at the end of the show, it was palpable that even in these modern days, it is impossible to convict good looking murderesses.

In a festival whose dedication to celluloid is readily apparent, why not declare it directly? And so one of the Vienna International Film Festival's Special Programs this year is a bastion of that most wonderful format, 16mm film. Programmed by Katja Wiederspahn and Haden Guest with an admirably variegated range, the programs were gathered around collective films, war films, sex films, expanded cinema, and more. Key to the section's expanse, which begins in the 1920s and touches every decade between here and there, is also in highlighting new work done in this increasingly outmoded, "out of date," and unprojectionable format. Included amongst these are films every bit as exciting as the history and canon "Revolution in 16mm" touches on: Jodie Mack's Razzle Dazzle (written about here), Richard Touhy's masterpiece of color Ginza Strip, and, most excitingly, a quartet of new films by Nathaniel Dorsky, the film poet who makes...

I think everyone has decided to agree that Comic-Con was a little bit disappointing this year, and I am jumping on that bandwagon. Of all the disappointing disappointments, the Marvel Television panel was the disappointingest. Last year the panel was called Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this year it was titled "Marvel Television Presentation," which meant I was hoping that there would be casting announcements for any of the Defenders, or maybe a sneak peek at some early Daredevil footage. The random people sitting near me in Ballroom 20 shared my high hopes, which were cruelly dashed by Jeph Loeb (Marvel Television President) and his lanyards.
Look, it’s not like Loeb was eating babies on the dais, it’s just that last year’s surprise screening of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot set the bar higher than a blooper reel, which is what they showed. Nothing wrong with that, I just wanted some Marvel Razzle Dazzle.

For those who are fans of the seminal 1985 time travel spectacular Back to the Future, but maybe thought it needed more singing and dancing, today’s your lucky day. Bob Gale, the screenwriter who brought all three films of the Future trilogy to the screen, has announced that he, along with Robert Zemeckis, is bringing a Back to the Future Musical to London’s West End Theater. In the announcement, posted on Bttf.com, Gale said that he and Zemeckis have been working on the musical for over a decade, and have created a show that “captures the spirit of the film without being a slavish remake.” You will give us an Enchantment Under the Sea dance break, Gale. You will give it to us now. Director Baz Luhrmann has been known for making visually pleasing and heavily stylized films, which simply means that he was born to eventually direct the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic The Great Gatsby. And boy does he direct it; filling the film with lush photography and a general grand presentation that turns the timeless classic into an epic on-screen event that absolutely must be viewed in 3D. Unfortunately, The Great Gatsby also suffers from a director going overboard with his visual flare, while not focusing enough time on the film’s numerous detestable characters, played with a varying range by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire.
The film follows a young and aspiring writer by the name of Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he ventures off into the big city with hopes and dreams of making it. Things don’t really pan out for Nick at first and he puts...

Plot: A bondsman (Maguire) becomes witness to a love triangle involving his cousin (Mulligan), her husband (Edgerton), and the wealthy rich man of mystery (DiCaprio) who lives in a mansion next door. Based on the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Who’S It For? Fans hoping this movie will honor the spirit of the novel should probably not bother; this film adaptation has its own spirit, one highly directed towards viewers who simply want opulence.
Movie:
The actual story of Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” isn’t all that great. That is a fact of literature; what elevates the novel to its prestige is its vision, its imagination with words.

Chicago – God, I want to love “The Great Gatsby,” on Blu-ray and DVD from Warner Bros. tomorrow, August 27, 2013. I adore “Moulin Rouge!” and think Baz Luhrmann’s approach to the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic was a daring one. And, watching the film again at home, in a great 2D/HD transfer instead of a garish 3D one, I found more to respect here. The film’s flaws were amplified in 3D and they’re allowed to blend into what works on Blu-ray. The special features also amplify the work by illustrating the incredible amount of detail and work that went into the production. I still can’t get over some of the mistakes made, like nearly every decision made by Tobey Maguire, but the Blu-ray gets me closer.
Rating: 3.0/5.0
From my theatrical review:
“I wanted to love “The Great Gatsby.” I’m a fan of Baz Luhrmann’s passionate, romantic view of cinema.

When I read The Great Gatsby in AP English back in 1975, I knew it was considered a literary classic but didn’t fall in love with it, despite East Egg’s source material, Great Neck, was nearby. It was a world of the wealthy and decadent that didn’t make sense to me. More recently, though, I reread it for the first time in preparation for my teaching career. With some experience, age, and wisdom, I came to see F. Scott Fitzgerald’s prose in a new light. I certainly got to appreciate that this was a fresh take class, wealth, and The American Dream.
So, when I heard director Baz Luhrmann was going to bring his visual sensibilities to bringing the novel to the silver screen, I thought this could be a wonderful treat, matching the imaginativeness of his Romeo & Juliet and verve from Moulin Rouge. The casting — from...

With summer just around the corner, the music industry is poised to start dropping tons of new tracks in hopes of bringing the heat -- but what to listen to on the days you don't feel like sweating it out on the dancefloor? To craft the perfect soundtrack for beating the heat, ETonline has turned to Haley Strode, star of Nickelodeon's newest hit series, Wendell & Vinnie.
"This is a compilation of what I consider to be necessary summertime tunes," Strode tells ETonline, "meant to be listened to in this order."
Tobias Froberg, Somewhere in the City
"There must be a party ... somewhere in the city." These rad lyrics help inspire a carefree summer.
The La's, There She Goes
This songs is nostalgia at its core, summer in middle school, knee socks and all.
James Brown, It's a Man's Man's Man's World

The Accused: “Exposé,” an episode from the third season of Lost which focused entirely on the much-despised new characters Nikki and Paulo.
The Crimes: The first half of Lost’s third season incited a now-legendary storm of fan rage. The show had plenty of legitimate problems. Half of the characters were imprisoned, for reasons that were initially nebulous and then just stupid. The mysterious Others were suddenly characters, and they were almost uniformly boring. Has an Australian filmmaker finally cracked the rarely attempted romantic comedy genre? Colin Delaney visits the set of Not Suitable for Children to find out if Oscar nominated, first time feature director Peter Templeman’s flick about testicular cancer has the balls to make it big at the box office.
A mismatched collection of twenty somethings loiter in front of a large old house in Eveleigh, south of Sydney’s Cbd. Goths, surfers, hipsters and stoners make up the group. Inside it’s shoulder-to-shoulder with revellers filling hallways and stairwells. The event is not just thrown together either – flashing lights and disco balls suggest the members of this household take their parties seriously. And the amount of drugs and alcohol circulating certainly deem the environment unsuitable for children.

The big topic of conversation around the AfterElton employee break room this week — other than snicks stinking up the microwave with his damn tuna melts — was: "What is your favorite guilty pleasure movie?"
Some of the responses we heard were surprising, giving a disturbing glimpse into the twisted dark souls of some of our writers. Meanwhile, some responses (like, you know, mine) just stand as excellent movie recommendations. We thought we'd round up all the various answers in this new feature we're trying out called "AfterElton Trending Topics."
But we don't want to just hear from the Ae writers. As you might have noticed, most of them are blowhards. In the comments, we'd love to hear from our readers too. What is the biggest guilty pleasure in your DVD collection?

I don't know why the writers decided to call their show Regretfully We Give You Cougar Town because it's more like a present to open every Wednesday night.
On tonight's episode, "When The Time Comes", Jules prepares to have Thanksgiving at her place. Trav and his roommate come home for the occasion. Did anyone really think Trav wouldn't be there? That would have been an interesting turn of events that the writers could have taken.
In any case, these two new lovebirds have to spend the holiday apart. And like most sickeningly cute couples, they Skype with each other. But not just any old Skyping...dance Skyping! This not only was pure brilliance, but is something I will try out the next time me and my boo are apart. Yes, I said boo.

In honor of the opening of the film Burlesque, starring Cher, Christina Aguilera and Stanley Tucci, the Movie Geeks are presenting what we feel are the best motion picture musicals.
Honorable Mention: Mary Poppins
“Practically Perfect in Every Way”, this is how the incomparably magical nanny Mary Poppins describes herself with nary a boastful smirk on a revealing tape measure in the still-charming 1964 Disney classic musical set in post-Victorian London circa 1910. Mary Poppins is the first movie I can remember seeing in a theater as a child I still feel genuine warmth about this movie as an adult. Such was the impact of Julie Andrews in her big screen debut, as she epitomizes the title character with equal quantities of starch and sugar. There are so many delightful scenes in Mary Poppins that it’s hard to choose which to highlight, though one of the best ones has to be...

"Razzle them. Dazzle them. Razzle dazzle them!" This is the mantra of Michael Shannon's central character in a mad, loosely based on a true crime story movie directed by so-called "rogue filmmaker" (I prefer the term "awesome filmmaker") Werner Herzog and produced by David Lynch. What he means by it, in the story, is ambiguous, but obviously a central point to his being, judging from the fact that the first time we meet him, the first words he says are exactly that, while holding a coffee mug that says it too.
This is how Herzog approached yet another crazy killer profile. He's not so interested in the motive, nor is he particular about the details of the case. He's simply interested in the poetry of the murderer and his murderous actions. To follow the coffee mug's urging, with us being said "them."

In lieu of a traditional review of Rob Marshall's Nine, which opens Friday in limited release and then expands a week later for the Christmas box office rush, I've opted for random thoughts, nine of them, strung together. This is a survival tactic. I've spent so long obsessing on the movie prior to its release (prior to even its casting given my enthusiasm for the mid-Aughts Broadway revival) that a review proper couldn't contain me. It would kill me. I got no choreography, I'll just have to spit out my words however they come out. Picture them flying from the blog like sand from Fergie's fingers
