Goober and the Cave Rescue
The Junior Woodsman are holding a 10-mile hike. Mike speaks for the five other boys in wanting a different location this year, Indian Caves. Sam mentions how it could be dangerous, as many of the cave systems are uncharted. Goober offers to be the guide, having played in them as a child and knowing the territory well. Club head Howard and Sam leads them on their adventure. They yield to Goober's directions as they go along. Upon reaching the caves, Goober gets separated from the others. Sam and Howard take the boys back to their homes and try to gather knowledgable help. The county geologist, Ted Barnsdale (Len Wayland), is considered the one in the area who knows the caves best, and has the necessary equipment. He can't come until the morning, however. Everyone else, including the police, feel it's too risky to go inside and search without an expert. Goober wakes up inside the cave to see light and follow a way out. He spots a remote shack, the home of "Old Man" Harvey Benson (the perfect "old man" character actor Burt Mustin). The only connection the old man has with society is his TV where they watch a solemn, sensationalized news report on Goober's cave rescue. After eating, Old Man Benson convinces him that he must go back into the cave to not anger and save face of his rescuers. Can things be that easy?
This episode is clearly inspired by "The Andy Griffith Show" episode "Barney and the Cave Rescue". The fact Goober is stranded in the dark, damp cave seems strangely downplayed by the characters. Personally, (and especially as a first responder), that makes the episode hard to watch at that point. It had its moments though, so it could have been a nice episode with a few things reworked.
