How many times has a forgotten film found success on Netflix? Surely too many to count. The service has proven time and time again that, no matter how bad a movie is, if the public have been given long enough to forget it existed, it will more than likely see a resurgence in interest when fed into the streaming machine. Just take a look at the 2008 Keanu Reeves thriller "Street Kings," which had a renaissance on Netflix back in 2023. Or when Netflix breathed new life into the forgotten Aaron Eckhart-led action thriller "The Bricklayer" this year.
Now, it's Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's turn. Wahlberg is no stranger to a streaming resurgence, with the actor's "Shooter" making waves on Netflix in 2023. This time, though he's joined by Denzel (who only just found his way into Netflix's top charts last month thanks to "American Gangster") in 2013's buddy cop actioner "2 Guns.

The 2007 crime drama "American Gangster" began its life as a 2000 New York Times article called "The Return of Superfly," written by journalist Marc Jacobs. The article detailed the rise and fall of Frank Lucas, a Harlem drug kingpin who operated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Lucas was apprehended and jailed in 1976 and sentenced to 70 years in prison, but was able to get his sentence shortened by becoming an FBI informant. He was a criminal who took a job with the cops -- notably, Detective Richie Roberts -- who collared him.
Star screenwriter Steve Zaillian wrote a massively long adaptation of Jacobs' article and showed it to director Ridley Scott as early as 2002. Scott declined to direct it, however, choosing to work on his ancient war epic "Kingdom of Heaven" instead. The screenplay, called "True Blu" at the time, also crossed the desk of Brian de Palma. With nearly 60 films under his belt, it's easy to assume that Denzel Washington has already done it all. Sure, there are a few genres the actor hasn't totally dipped his toe into — he may never star in a Marvel movie, for example — but the 69-year-old Washington has learned to be choosy about the projects he selects nowadays.
"There are very few films left for me to make that I'm interested in," Washington recently admitted to Empire. Ultimately, the decision boils down to the director at the helm, and that's partially what inspired him to star in the upcoming "Gladiator II."
The film will see him reuniting with Ridley Scott, who directed him in 2007's "American Gangster." And it'll be Washington's first costume drama since "The Tragedy of Macbeth" in 2021. That should honestly be reason enough to get excited about "Gladiator," and most cinephiles understandably are. But when the first trailer dropped for the film,...

THR reports that John Ortiz, best known for his roles in Fast & Furious, American Gangster, Kong: Skull Island, Mayans Mc, and many others, has joined the cast of Nobody 2, which is currently in production in Winnipeg.
The sequel will see Bob Odenkirk return as Hutch Mansell, the mild-manner family man who keeps his past as a government assassin under wraps. Connie Nielsen is also returning as Hutch’s wife, Becca, as well as Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s father, a retired FBI agent. It was announced earlier this year that Sharon Stone would be playing the main villain of the sequel. Colin Hanks is also onboard as a “corrupt sheriff with none-too-nice ambitions.” It’s not yet known who John Ortiz will play in Nobody 2, but I always love seeing him pop up in projects.

“Blink Twice” (Amazon MGM), actress Zoë Kravitz’s feature directorial debut with Channing Tatum as a tech billionaire who invites a cocktail waitress to his private island, was a modest performer in theaters last month. Its opening weekend only reached #4 at the box office, earning $7 million, with the full run amounting to $22 million.
Flash forward a few weeks, and it is #1 for its debut week in PVOD. It jumped to the top even as three other new releases (all weaker performers) also made at least one of the two top 10 lists below.
Netflix continues to find appeal for its recent originals, with four films in its top five. A big part of the Netflix machine is the way in which it functions like a version of that Facebook "Memories" feature for films and TV shows. The service frequently throws up older media to an audience who've had more than enough time to forget about it, resulting in the phenomenon what we now know as a Netflix renaissance. We saw it with forgotten fantasy epic "Warcraft," which took over the Netflix movie charts earlier this year, and we saw it again when Netflix breathed new life into the 2008 Keanu Reeves crime thriller "Street Kings."
Now, it's Denzel Washington's turn. Ahead of his role as rich powerbroker Macrinus in Ridley Scott's "Gladiator II," a previous collaboration between the celebrated actor and esteemed filmmaker is making its way up the Netflix charts. The 2007 crime thriller "American Gangster" saw Washington play real-life criminal Frank Lucas — a heroin kingpin from Harlem...

Russell Crowe has repeatedly stated that neither Ridley Scott nor anyone involved with “Gladiator 2” reached out to him to consult on the upcoming sequel considering the follow-up’s storyline has little to do with the character he played in the 2000 original. Crowe won an Oscar for “Gladiator,” but his character, Maximus, died at the end of the movie. Scott recently told Empire magazine (via ScreenRant) that he hopes his relationship with Crowe is still in good shape after not reaching out about “Gladiator 2.”
“The plot, frankly, was right under our noses,” Scott said about the sequel. “I think it was so close under our noses that we thought it was too simple. I think [Russell Crowe] is still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope we do. As long as he doesn’t start bitching about how he wasn’t consulted.

A big-screen adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s dystopian sci-fi novel Uglies; Emily in Paris becoming Emily in Rome; Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre piece; the latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s grisly crime anthology series; Carrie Coon, Elizabeth Olsen and Natasha Lyonne playing sisters in a critically acclaimed family drama; and rom-com series toplined by the charming coupling of Kristen Bell and Adam Brody are some of the highlights among the new films and series hitting Netflix in September.

With a career spanning more than 40 years, nine Oscar nominations (a record for a Black actor) and a potential hit with Gladiator II, what else is left for Denzel Washington to accomplish on the big screen? As it turns out, maybe not so much after all, as the actor has indicated that he could possibly be nearing retirement as he nears 70.
Speaking with Empire as part of their new cover story for Gladiator II – in which he plays Macrinus, a broker who wants to take over Rome – Denzel Washington said that at this point in his career, he really needs to find a compelling project to even consider signing on. “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley…He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film.

Denzel Washington has hinted at retirement following the release of “Gladiator II” this November. While speaking with Empire for the magazine’s special issue built around the film, Washington, now 69 years old, noted, “There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley.”
“We had a great go-round the first go-round [on ‘American Gangster’], and here we are,” he added, shouting out his 2007 collaboration with Scott. The director is “engaged” and “excited about life,” Washington said, showing a bit of excitement for himself about the idea of working into your golden years. “We should all want to feel like that at 86.”

Is Denzel Washington considering retirement? Maybe so. Yes, he’s got “Gladiator II” coming out this November, a Spike Lee-directed remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “High and Low” in the can, and an epic re-teaming with frequent collaborator Antoine Fuqua on the horizon, but in a recent interview with Empire, the Academy Award-winning actor and occasional writer/director hinted that his career may be winding down, but it’s filmmakers like Ridley Scott that keep him interested.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” Washington said, referencing his experience on “Gladiator II.”
Washington shared that his previous experience working with Scott on “American Gangster” helped persuade him to take on the role of Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer in “Gladiator II” who “wants to be...

Renowned actor Denzel Washington hinted he may start taking on fewer acting jobs in the future, even as he commits to a leading role in director Ridley Scott’s sequel to the 2000 film Gladiator.
In a recent interview, the two-time Oscar winner said he’s becoming more selective in the projects he chooses and is focusing more on work behind the camera. However, Scott’s passion for filmmaking inspired Washington to take part in Gladiator II.
Washington said in an interview with Empire magazine that he’s interested in fewer acting roles as his career progresses. The veteran of over 40 years in the industry explained he’s drawn to roles that excite him. Despite this, the 86-year-old Scott’s enthusiasm for cinema made the upcoming Gladiator sequel too compelling to pass up.

Denzel Washington fans may be wondering if the actor is nearing retirement following his recent comments to Empire magazine.

Is Denzel Washington nearing an acting retirement from the big screen? In a new interview with Empire magazine to promote his role in Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator 2,” the two-time Oscar winner admitted the upcoming swords-and-sandals epic was one of the few movies left to make that still interested him. How many more of these roles exist Washington did not reveal.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker, and I was tremendously inspired by Ridley,” Washington said about agreeing to star in the “Gladiator” sequel.
It helped that Washington already had a great rapport with Scott from their time making 2007’s “American Gangster” together. The actor said: “We had a great go-round the first go-round and here we are. He’s engaged. He’s excited about life and his next film. He’s an inspiration.

The filmography of the late, great Tony Scott is packed with Denzel Washington favourites – from Man On Fire and Crimson Tide, to Déjà Vu and Unstoppable. The director and star had a real creative chemistry spanning years, right up until Scott’s untimely death in 2012. And now, for the second time, Washington is collaborating with Scott’s similarly legendary filmmaker brother Ridley, stepping into Gladiator II – their first work together since 2007’s American Gangster.
This time, Washington is donning ancient Roman gear as Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer who “wants to be Emperor and he’s willing to do anything to get there,” he tells Empire in the world-exclusive Gladiator II issue. Having worked with both Scott brothers, Washington has experienced their individual brilliance first-hand. “I don’t compare directors,” he says. “You see the different personalities. Exclusive: NBC’s Chicago Fire has cast KaDee Strickland for a recurring role in Season 13. The new season begins Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC and next day on Peacock.
She will portray Monica Pascal, the new Fire Chief Dom Pascal’s (Dermot Mulroney) estranged wife. As Deadline reported in July, Mulroney joined the popular firefighter drama as Boden’s (Eamonn Walker) successor following his exit as a series regular in the Season 12 finale.
Before Boden was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department, he had chosen Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) as his successor. The introduction of Dom Pascal would interfere with that plan, and Eigenberg earlier this month shared insight with Deadline as to why Herrmann may pass on the opportunity.

The “elevated” psychological thriller The Surfer, starring Nicolas Cage (who can currently be seen on the big screen in Longlegs), received a six minute standing ovation when it screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and now Deadline reports that a wider audience will have the chance to watch this ovation-inspiring film when Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions give it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Lorcan Finnegan (Vivarium) directed The Surfer from a screenplay by Thomas Martin. Here’s the synopsis: When a man (Cage) returns to his beachside hometown in Australia, many years since building a life for himself in the U.S., he is humiliated in front of his teenage son by a local gang of surfers who claim strict ownership over the secluded beach of his childhood. Wounded, “The Surfer” decides to remain at the beach, declaring war against those in control of the bay. But as the conflict escalates,...

On day one of the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump tapped Jd Vance to be his vice-presidential running mate. And with that announcement, a four-year-old movie — the Ron Howard-directed adaptation of Vance’s memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy” — leapt almost instantly into the Netflix top 10.
For many Americans, that chicken-fried Bildungsroman will be their introduction to a veep with less than two years’ government experience. In both the book and its middling Netflix adaptation, Vance portrayed himself as an Appalachian kid from poor stock who’d escaped the Rust Belt for an Ivy League education and a lucrative career.
It was that dimension of Vance’s narrative that clearly attracted director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer — both self-avowed liberals, who may have created a monster by legitimizing his origin story, much as “The Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett did by giving Trump a reality TV spotlight back in 2004.

Nearly 25 years later, Ridley Scott is revisiting ancient Rome, and it seems he picked up right where he left off.
Joseph Quinn recently opened up about his time working with the seminal director on Gladiator II, the followup to his 2000 epic historical drama, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and earned Scott a Best Director nod.
“He is a world builder,” he raved to Men’s Health of Scott, who marked his 86th birthday in November.
“He creates these films that utterly transport you, and that is a very rare thing to be able to do. I, like you, was a massive fan of his films: I remember watching Blade Runner as a kind of rite-of-passage with my Dad when I was younger; Gladiator was a really seminal film for me; Thelma and Louise, American Gangster, Alien, obviously. Josh Brolin has become quite a prominent figure in Hollywood. Having starred in some very critically acclaimed works, he has made a name for himself as an incredibly talented actor. While his face is mainly seen in films like Dune, No Country for Old Men, and Sicario, one of his most successful and acclaimed roles was in films where he did not even look like himself.

Famously playing Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he became the bane of every Marvel fan’s existence. However, long before he became the purple alien, Brolin was like any other actor in the film industry. That was until a Denzel Washington film saved him.
Josh Brolin—A Struggling Actor
Before an actor comes to the forefront of the media, it is a well-known fact that the profession does not offer a lot of benefits.

The MGM+ original drama series “Godfather of Harlem” has cast “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “How to Get Away with Murder” actor Rome Flynn as a recurring guest star during the show’s upcoming fourth season.
Flynn will portray Frank Lucas, a country boy from North Carolina who ventures to Harlem and, after initial friction with gangster Bumpy Johnson (Forest Whitaker), eventually rises to become Bumpy’s fiercest defender and right-hand man.
Academy Award winner Denzel Washington first portrayed Frank Lucas in the 2007 film “American Gangster,” which is loosely based on the criminal background of the real-life gangster who operated a drug empire in New York City during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the TV series, the character’s story will begin ten years earlier than in the film.

There are few actors as versatile and intensely arresting as Lakeith Stanfield. Since appearing in Destin Daniel Cretton's Short Term 12 upon graduating from high school, Stanfield has gone on to work with premier talents, including Ava DuVernay, Jordan Peele and Donald Glover. Most recently, he joined his contemporaries Jonathan Majors, Regina King and Idris Elba in Netflix’s thunderous Western The Harder They Fall.

There was something fitting about the setting.
Paramount Pictures unveiled the first trailer from “Gladiator II” on the stage of The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, a Las Vegas hotel that reimagines Ancient Rome in all its decadent splendor, albeit with a few more slot machines. Director Ridley Scott seems to be offering a bloodier version of that distant age, one that finds Paul Mescal entering the arena as a nobleman who has renounced his privilege and finds himself in a life-and-death struggle for the amusement of the Roman people.
Based on the footage that Scott brought to Sin City to share with cinema owners, “Gladiator 2” recaptures the first film’s epic sprawl and shattering action sequences. The teaser saw Mescal face off against a charging rhino, a horde of vicious baboons, and Pedro Pascal, among other threats to his chiseled physique. There were also naval bombardments, political intrigue aplenty...

The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

Hollywood star Russell Crowe broke both legs while filming ‘Robin Hood’ but didn’t realise it until a decade later when he began experiencing mysterious pain in his limbs. The 59-year-old actor recalled experiencing pain when he rushed through filming a scene which required him to jump onto “rock-hard” ground without the surface being properly prepared.
Speaking to People magazine, Crowe, who played the titular role in the 2010 movie, said: “I jumped off a castle portcullis onto rock-hard uneven ground. We should have prepped the ground and buried a pad but we were in a rush to get the shot done in the fading light.”
“With hundreds of extras around, arrows flying and burn pots setting the castle on fire, there was no pulling out. As I jumped, I remember thinking, ‘This is going to hurt’.”

Carla Gugino is amazing. From her early days co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law to indies with her partner Sebastian Gutierrez, including Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble, Gugino has shirked the traditional path many Hollywood actresses have taken. Wounded, he defies them and remains at the beach, demanding acceptance. As the conflict escalates, he is brought to the edge of his sanity, and his identity is thrown into question.” (via Deadline)

Writer, director, and producer Ridley Scott has been making movies for decades, but one of his earliest features was also apparently one of his most difficult. The man behind "Napoleon" (read our review!) is no stranger to directing historical epics, real-world dramas, and even existential science-fiction, but in an interview with Wired in 2007, he revealed that the most difficult film to create was his 1982 science fiction classic, "Blade Runner." Loosely based on the 1968 Phillip K. Dick novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," "Blade Runner" is a noirish sci-fi starring Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, who hunts down renegade android "replicants" in his job as a blade runner. In the course of hunting down a handful of such replicants that escaped from an off-world labor camp, he starts to question the very nature of humanity. It's heady, moody stuff, but it's also a deeply beloved film that inspired both a sequel and an animated series.

Gladiator 2: Ridley Scott reveals details about Denzel Washington’s character in the upcoming sequel
The strikes have subsided and Ridley Scott has been able to restart his production on Gladiator 2. The director isn’t one for sitting around while things were on hiatus, so he’s said he’s been working out certain production logistics during the time off. Scott recently caught up with Deadline to talk about his new film Napoleon, as well as reveal some new details on Gladiator 2. Scott stated that the production reconvenes in a couple of weeks and is hoping his actors have stayed at their fight weight during the downtime, “Paul Mescal is really very fit and stays that way. I haven’t seen the other ones yet, so I hope they’re not porked up.”
While speaking about the physical fitness of his actors, it was brought up that Denzel Washington is working out hard for this project. The interviewer throws back to Scott’s...

Ridley Scott’s career is marked first and foremost by its sheer prolificness. There are very few directors of any age who work frequently enough to have two films coming out the same year. Scott’s done it three times in 2001, 2017, and 2021; and those later two times were when he was past the age of 80.
Since he made his debut with the swashbuckling period drama “The Duellists” in 1977, Scott has been a steady, constant presence at the cinema. His longest break has been two four-year gaps between releases — “1492: Conquest for Paradise” and “White Squall” from 1992 to 1996 and “The Martian” and “All the Money in the World” and “The Last Duel” from 2017 to 2021, the latter gap widened by the pandemic. More frequently, Scott only goes two or even just one year before dropping a new film, resulting in an impressively robust 28 filmography.

Actor Denzel Washington managed to connect with audiences with his wide range of characters and films. But the reaction for his highest grossing film was one that even blew him away.
What’s Denzel Washington’s highest-grossing film? Denzel Washington | Tommaso Boddi/FilmMagic
Out of all the movies Washington’s done, American Gangster still reigns supreme as the actor’s top grossing film. The feature saw the Safe House star play real-life drug kingpin Frank Lucas, and grossed $267 million according to The Numbers. Washington was attracted to the role because it had an interesting dynamic with Russell Crowe’s character in the film. Crowe played a cop living a less than honest life, which had an interesting parallel to Washington’s Frank Lucas.
“That one man appears to be so straight and honest in his police work is so dishonest in his private life. Another man who seems to be...

Ridley Scott will turn 86 on November 30, and the man shows no signs of slowing down. The wildly prolific filmmaker's latest historical epic, "Napoleon," hits theaters on November 22, but he's already gearing up for his next massive undertaking.
I wouldn't say moviegoers were clamoring for "Gladiator 2" (except maybe for the period when musician Nick Cave was writing his evidently bonkers screenplay), but once Scott began casting the sequel to the 2000 Best Picture winner, many of us were suddenly all the way in. How's this for a powerhouse ensemble: Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Matt Lucas, Djimon Hounsou, Connie Nielsen, and Derek Jacobi (the last three reprising their roles from the first movie).
And, oh yeah, Denzel Washington.
This will mark the two-time Academy Award-winning actor's second collaboration with Scott after "American Gangster," and his mere involvement is enough to make this one of 2024's most anticipated films. But now that Scott...
