When people want to watch horror movies for Halloween, one of the most popular is, of course, Halloween. Whoever gave the film that title was a genius because it made the movie requisite seasonal viewing for nearly 40 years. However, John Carpenter’s seminal slasher film doesn’t embody the spirit of October 31st as much as a later cult classic does. Here’s a look at the perfect film to watch at the end of this month.
John Carpenter’s ‘Halloween’ is scary but it isn’t darkly funny like another movie
Carpenter’s Halloween is plenty scary. It has a macabre central figure (Michael Myers), a blood pressure raising performance from Jamie Lee Curtis, who seems genuinely horrified for much of the movie, and a terrifying sountrack. What the film is missing is the season’s sense of mischief.
Enter Trick ‘r Treat. This 2009 horror comedy mixes all sides of the holiday: the childish,...

Gary Dauberman's "Salem's Lot" has had a bumpy ride. The Stephen King adaptation was originally supposed to hit theaters in 2022. Then it got delayed to 2023. Then it got pulled from the release calendar entirely. Since "Salem's Lot" is a Warner Bros. production, there was a growing fear that this vampire movie would go the way of WB's "Batgirl" and "Coyote vs. Acme" and never see the light of day. King got involved, taking to Twitter and pondering why the studio was sitting on the flick. "Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it's embarrassing, or anything," the master of horror said. Rumors eventually began to swirl that "Salem's Lot" might skip theaters entirely and go directly to WB's streaming service, Max. Sure enough, the studio finally announced that was the case: "Salem's Lot" is destined to stream on Max this October, just in time for Halloween season.

In a bit of an odd turn of events, a largely forgotten sports drama has been climbing the charts on Netflix as of late. 2014's "23 Blast," which is based on the true story of a remarkable football player named Travis Freeman, has made its way into the Netflix top 10 movie charts, right alongside recent hits such as "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Trolls Band Together." So, why now? How is it that this decade-old football movie is finding an audience on the world's largest streaming service when so many other movies are available for one to stream? It's a fascinating example of the unpredictable nature of the streaming world we now live in.
"23 Blast" is, as of this writing, sitting firmly in the 10th spot on Netflix's charts (via FlixPatrol). It centers on a high school football star who is suddenly stricken with irreversible total blindness. He...

Experience one of the country's largest haunts at this year's Six Flags Fright Fest, a terrifying event that will feature 11 haunted houses and nine scare zones!
One of the most notable additions to the 2024 line-up is a haunted maze experience based on the Netflix and Legendary 2022 slasher film Texas Chainsaw Massacre. While the film received mixed reviews from critics and fans, at least one scene in the 2022 film is still discussed to this day—the bus scene, where Leatherface boards a bus and slaughters almost everyone on board.
Based on the newly released photos for the upcoming haunt, it looks like Fright Fest will be recreating its own version of that titular set piece.

Parkgoers will get the chance to navigate the small, creepy town of Harlow, a "forgotten corner of Texas" with plenty of disturbing secrets, a place where Leatherface could be lurking around any corner.

Another Halloween season is almost upon us, and we’re still waiting for director Mike Dougherty to get the long-awaited sequel to his horror anthology film Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here) into production. Back in 2022, he said the sequel is in “very active development“ and last year he mentioned that there is a “really great script” in place that he wrote with his Krampus collaborators Zach Shields and Todd Casey… and yet we still haven’t heard anything about the sequel actually getting made. While we wait to find out what’s going to happen with the sequel, Arrow Video has announced that they’re going to give the first movie a limited edition 4K release! Pre-orders for the UK version of the 4K release are available at This Link, and the North American version of the release can be pre-ordered at This Link. October 27th is the UK street date,...

Arrow Video is set to deliver a thrilling array of horror films to the UK this Halloween season. Fans can anticipate the release of two versions of Exorcist II: The Heretic, Exorcist III in 4K, the darkly humorous anthology Trick ‘r Treat, and a seven-film J-Horror limited edition collection.
Exorcist II: The Heretic
Directed by John Boorman, Exorcist II: The Heretic is a visionary thriller that defies expectations with its unique approach. The film stars Linda Blair, Louise Fletcher, and Richard Burton, and features breathtaking cinematography and a standout score by Ennio Morricone. Following the exorcism that saved Regan MacNeil (Blair) and caused the deaths of two priests, Regan’s therapist, Dr. Tuskin (Fletcher), believes her memories are simply repressed and waiting. Father Philip Lamont (Burton), tasked by the Vatican to investigate Father Merrin, finds himself drawn into a spiritual battle that spans from Africa to New York and Georgetown.

The summer horror movie subgenre spoils us all with an embarrassment of riches, but this also means that whenever people come up with a list of recommendations, the same players make an appearance again and again. At this point, you shouldn't need an online list to tell you that "Jaws" is the ultimate July 4th viewing experience. And considering that "Midsommar," "Summer of '84," and "I Know What You Did Last Summer" have the season in the title of the movie, these are also no-brainer suggestions for summer horror movies. Summer is also the season for summer camp movies, so "Sleepaway Camp," the entire "Friday the 13th" franchise, parodies like "The Final Girls," homages like "Fear Street: 1978," and the entire roster of Cabin in the Woods horror movies are all easy picks.
Then there are the countless folk horror films in the vein of "The Wicker Man" that all scream "summer,...

The subgenre of "Christmas movies" has been a curious one of late. While new movies set during the holiday season or others explicitly concerning it are released every year (especially holiday horror), it feels like we haven't gotten a new classic, gotta-watch-this-every-year holiday movie in a while. That's because, in all honesty, most classics aren't made, they're grown; it takes a few years for most films to prove their durability, and some that are overlooked upon their initial release get rediscovered and slowly morph into seasonal staples.
Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is intimately familiar with this process, as it's happened to him at least twice with two movies about two different holidays. His anthology of Halloween hijinks, 2007's "Trick 'r Treat," barely got a theatrical release before word of mouth allowed it to gain a cult reputation strong enough that a sequel has been rumored for years, and may actually happen.

You better run, because the coolest horror shirt of the year just dropped.
Since 2023 has been the longest year ever, you may have forgotten that it all kicked off with the robotic monstrous femme supremacy of "M3GAN." Not only did M3GAN aerial cartwheel her way into our horror-loving hearts and immediately establish herself as the next great horror icon (greenlighting a sequel in the process), but she also absolutely slayed at the box office. As of publication, "M3GAN" is the third highest-grossing horror film of the year, just behind "Scream VI" and "Five Nights at Freddy's." Considering one of those films is a legacy sequel and the other is based on an insanely popular video game franchise, this makes "M3GAN" the most popular original horror film of the year. In honor of everyone's new best friend, the horror-themed apparel company, Cavity Colors, is releasing an officially licensed "M3GAN" shirt and zip-up hoodie.

‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:
I Come In Peace (1990)
It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat) made his mark on Christmas horror with Krampus back in 2015, a box office hit that was ripe with franchise potential. Much like Trick ‘r Treat, however, we’re still waiting for a sequel nearly ten years later. Does Dougherty have any plans to bring the holiday beast back to the screen any time soon? It sounds like he might…
Speaking with Collider after a recent screening of Trick ‘r Treat, where he also teased Trick ‘r Treat 2, Doughtery noted that he and his team have discussed Krampus sequel plans.
“We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too,” Dougherty explained.
“It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere,” the filmmaker continued.

Oh, how exquisite it feels to confirm Eli Roth's Thanksgiving is stuffed with holiday horror goodness. Fans have been rabid for a feature treatment of Roth's fake-at-the-time Grindhouse trailer, now rewarded with the new gold standard for Thanksgiving horror flicks. It's a violent throwback to bloodthirsty 80s slashers that's drowning in scrumptious gore, smothering the story's anti-capitalist frustrations in deep red juices that ain't cranberry sauce. Roth oven-roasts even the tiniest Turkey Day themes and signatures to perfection, indulging in macabre festivities on par with Michael Dougherty's work on Trick' r Treat and Krampus.
Roth and screenwriter Jeff Rendell hatch a vengeful story that starts with a deadly Black Friday shift in Plymouth, Massachusetts. RightMart shoppers rush the department store like a dashing zombie horde from 28 Days Later, causing multiple casualties in a brutally staged open. A year later, high schooler Jessica (Nell Verlaque) and her friends...

Making a movie that turns into a holiday classic is no easy task. What's even harder is to make a classic so primed to be turned into a franchise as "Trick 'r Treat" and just ... stop after one movie. Although it was originally meant to arrive in theaters in October of 2007, Warner Bros. pushed back Michael Dougherty's directorial debut indefinitely. After a successful run at genre film festivals around the world, "Trick 'r Treat" ended up getting unceremoniously dumped two years later on home video. It wasn't until 2022 that the film even got a proper theatrical release.
Still, the film has endured as a staple of Halloween, with fans eager to learn about Dougherty's plans for a sequel — which has been a long time coming. Now, we finally have some solid information that not only is "Trick 'r Treat 2" still happening, but there's been genuine progress in its development.

With Halloween now just days away, America’s thoughts turn increasingly to witches, demons, the paranormal and scaring the heck out of ourselves. And of course, few things accomplish this goal better than horror movies, a genre the United States has largely claimed as its own. To get everyone in the spirit, the website bank-locations.net launched a state-by-state study of Google to discern (based on searches) which Halloween-themed flicks were most popular in each state of the union.
To generate its conclusions, the research team analyzed 200+ top-rated horror films from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes, then studied specific searches for each movie. For example, for “The Shining,” they gathered keywords like “watch the shining,” “the shining full movie,” “”the shining streaming, “The shining netflix” and “where to watch the shining.”
Horror movies were split into two groups: those before 2000 and those after. More than half of the states (27) preferred Googling...

Director Mike Dougherty is slowing pushing forward Trick ‘r Treat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his horror anthology film Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here). Last year, he said the sequel is in “very active development“ and this month he mentioned that there is a “really great script” in place that he wrote with his Krampus collaborators Zach Shields and Todd Casey. Now, while speaking with Collider, Dougherty added that Trick ‘r Treat 2 is going to give the film’s little icon Sam a “proper nemesis” to face off with.
Sam is a supernatural creature that walks among trick-or-treaters with a burlap sack on his head, making sure people show the Halloween holiday its proper respect. If they don’t, Sam deals out the consequences. Some of the characters in Trick ‘r Treat find that out, most notably an old man played by Brian Cox, who does battle with...
