When Nicole Holofcener was coming up in the ’90s, she was celebrated as that rare thing: a female writer-director. Today, she’s no longer a rarity, and she’s still delivering sharp, funny observational comedies about flawed middle-class New York women. But somehow, the breadth and potential of her talent remains elusive.
Hollywood gives her scripts to write and rewrite and polish (for the big bucks). She wrote, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” for Ridley Scott, crafting the Jodie Comer character, and the Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh roles in Marvel’s “Black Widow.” She made more on that three-week assignment than three of her movies combined, she said at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which tributed her this year, playing three of her films for an audience unfamiliar with her work. She’s currently writing for Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in Disney’s latest iteration of “Tron.

Opening night at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival often lures a top talent to accept the Kviff President’s Award, in this case Viggo Mortensen, the writer/director/star of his sophomore film, western “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” co-starring Vicky Krieps, which will open in the Czech Republic on July 4.
Every year, Kviff presents a new black-and-white short film at the opening night ceremony, to serve as a trailer of sorts for the festival. This year’s main protagonist is Oscar-winning actor and producer Benicio del Toro (“Traffic”), recipient of the Kviff President’s Award in 2022. The short film was written and directed by long-time creator of Kviff trailers Ivan Zachariáš. Del Toro took time off while shooting Wes Anderson’s new film in Berlin to work with Zachariáš, who collaborated on the trailer with cinematographer Jan Velický and editor Filip Malásek, and composed the music.

Nicole Holofcener’s latest comedy “You Hurt My Feelings” received a warm bear hug of a reaction from critics and audiences at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The A24 film, which just opened in theaters, certainly isn’t not going to hurt the Memorial Day box office of Disney’s blockbuster “The Little Mermaid,” but it’s perfect counter programming.
“You Hurt My Feelings” revolves around a long-married couple Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who teaches writing and is an essayist, and Don (Tobias Menzies), a shrink going through a mid-life career crisis. Their marriage hits a snag when Beth overhears a conversation Don is having where he admits he didn’t like her latest book even though he had told her it was good. “The film never doubts or questions their love for each other,” noted Variety. “That’s part of what allows it to explore, with sneaky intricacy, the...

It’s no surprise that Nicole Holofcener prides herself in thinking that she can always tell when people are lying to her about her work. For decades now, indie filmmaker Nicole Holofcener has been delivering sharply observed, bitingly hilarious, empathic, complex comedies about the human condition, family, and life’s ordinary struggles. Often compared to Albert Brooks, Woody Allen, and Walt Stillman, filmmakers of somewhat similar urbane comedies, Holofcener’s always had a tenderness and humanity that maybe seemed a little too far out of reach of those dudes, and yet, never dulling her comedic blade.

While our summer preview is around the corner, one of the major stand-outs is the latest film from Nicole Holofcener, You Hurt My Feelings. Featuring a reunion with Julia Louis-Dreyfus after Please Give, along with the ensemble of Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins, Arian Moayed, and Jeannie Berlin, the Sundance selection follows a novelist whose long-standing marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband give his honest reaction to her latest book. Ahead of a wide Memorial Day weekend release from A24, the fist trailer has now arrived.
I said in my Sundance review, “In a landscape that has mostly lost its taste for comedy, every Nicole Holofcener film feels like a revelation. While she has more on her mind than just making audiences laugh, her gift for humor is undervalued, and her latest, You Hurt My Feelings, is as perceptive, insightful, and funny as her best work. The stakes may be considered low,...

It is always a time for celebration when we get a new Nicole Holofcener film, and that is especially true of her latest one that stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus. You Hurt My Feelings, which had its premiere Sunday night at Sundance, is the pair’s second collaboration, with 2013’s Enough Said co-starring the late James Gandolfini being the first. That film, and other Holofcener writing-directing efforts such as Friends with Money, Lovely & Amazing and perhaps my favorite, Please Give (not to forget the wonderful Can You Ever Forgive Me? which she co-wrote), focused on the quirky nature of our relationships with others in our lives. Holofcener just has always had a knack for getting right to the heart of things, often with a witty, wise and truthful touch.
This film is one of her best — with themes of trust, honesty, truth and lies at its center. Louis-Dreyfus plays happily married Beth,...

Amanda Peet has joined the cast of Fatal Attraction, Paramount+’s series reimagining of the classic 1980s psychosexual thriller film. She joins previously announced series leads Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson.
Written by Alexandra Cunningham from a story she co-wrote with Kevin J. Hynes, the Paramount Television Studios and Amblin Television series explores the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes towards strong women, personality disorders and coercive control.
Peet will play Beth Gallagher, a loyal wife, loving mother and successful small business owner whose world unravels when her husband Dan’s (Jackson) indiscretion threatens to destroy their life together.
Caplan plays Alex Forrest.
Cunningham serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Hynes as well as Amblin Television presidents Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.
As an actor, Peet most recently starred in season 2 of the true crime anthology series Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story.

The cast for Paramount+’s upcoming “Fatal Attraction” series is getting bigger.
Amanda Peet is joining the cast as Beth Gallagher, the loyal wife of Dan Gallagher (Joshua Jackson), who uncovers her husband’s sexual indiscretion with Alex Forrest (Lizzy Caplan). Peet’s character was originally by Anne Archer in the original 1987 film.
Paramount describes the new series as “a deep-dive reimagining of the classic psychosexual thriller and ‘80s cultural touchstone, the new series will explore fatal attraction and the timeless themes of marriage and infidelity through the lens of modern attitudes toward strong women, personality disorders and coercive control.” In other words, this will be a more nuanced approach than “sexy woman crazy,” which is the general, problematic sentiment of the original (admittedly still wonderful) film.

If acting is part journalism, part investigation, and part psychoanalysis of the character, actor Rebecca Hall embodies them all. Throughout her career, which began early on with the big bang of Christopher Nolan’s “The Prestige”—which she bagged just on the strength of a video audition she sent in herself— and then quickly lead to head-turning performances “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” “Frost/Nixon,” Nicole Holofcener’s “Please Give,” Ben Affleck’s “The Town,” Joel Edgerton’s “The Gift,” and Antonio Campos’ startling “Christine”—she has demonstrated the uncanny ability to be charming, but also emotional, vulnerable and absolutely convincing in everything she does.

The tone of this year’s Film Independent Spirit Awards was set early, when host Aubrey Plaza kicked off the annual awards ceremony with a girl-powered pre-taped show opener, which featured Hollywood heavyweights like Marcia Gay Harden, Rosanna Arquette, Christina Ricci, Sharon Stone, and Marisa Tomei playing at summoning indie film-fueled power in literal witch garb. Putting the focus on women and their impact on the industry isn’t exactly groundbreaking these days, but the Spirits weren’t just going for cheap gags in service of a laugh or two.
Unlike other awards season to-do’s, the Spirits nominated plenty of women, including in the Best Director category, a space that still doesn’t typically find room to recognize the work of creators who happen to be female. Plaza’s opening monologue pointed out that 60 percent of the ceremony’s nominated directors were women, and though she admitted that really...

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” stunned us all with a Writers Guild of America Awards win for Best Adapted Screenplay on Sunday. Can it pull off another shocker this weekend — not at the Oscars, but at the Independent Spirit Awards?
The Spirits only has one screenplay category that combines original and adapted scripts. “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, written by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty, is in second place in our combined odds behind Paul Schrader‘s “First Reformed,” and ahead of “Private Life” (Tamara Jenkins), “Sorry to Bother You” (Boots Riley) and “Collette”. “First Reformed” is the safe pick, as the film got a co-leading four nominations, including Best Picture unlike “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”, and it’s a chance to honor Schrader, the scribe behind classics like “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull.”

Netflix has released the trailer for “The Land of Steady Habits,” the latest film from “Enough Said” and “Please Give” director Nicole Holofcener. Ben Mendelsohn and Edie Falco star in the Tiff-bound drama, which follows the midlife crisis of a man whose attempts to improve his life end up doing the opposite.
Here’s the synopsis: “Feeling trapped in the stifling, wealthy enclave of Westport, Connecticut, Anders Hill (Ben Mendelsohn) retires from his job in finance and leaves his wife (Edie Falco) in the hopes that it will renew his lust for life. However, he’s quickly faced with the startling reality of his choices; he spends his days looking for things to decorate his empty shelves, sleeping with strangers and feeling terribly lost. Missing his ex-wife and on the outs with his troubled 27-year-old son (Thomas Mann), Anders befriends a drug-addicted teen (Charlie Tahan), sending him down a path...

The following contains spoilers for the Season 4 premiere of How to Get Away With Murder.
Sorry, Carmen Sandiego. After that How to Get Away With Murder premiere, we’re more concerned with someone else’s whereabouts.
The ABC drama returned for its fourth season on Thursday, and of the many questions we were left with after the episode, one of them is especially worrying: Where is Laurel’s baby?
Laurel, who’s already having a sufficiently miserable year, kicks off the episode by announcing to her father — aka the man responsible for Wes’ death — that she was pregnant, but had an abortion weeks ago.

The Last Jedi figures of Luke and Rey were sold as a part of the Black Series collectibles this past Sdcc. Rey is labeled as a Jedi in training, sporting a blue garment that looks the traditional garb of the knights. She comes complete with Luke’s lightsaber and her quarterstaff. Luke, labeled as Jedi Master, is wearing is the same cloaked white outfit that he wore at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with a distinct emphasis on his grown beard and metal hand.
With the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive label that these figures will likely never go on sale to the public, so diehards will have to purchase them from the people lucky enough to purchase them on third party sites.
