I’ve been lucky in my job at JoBlo to interview a lot of the legends I grew up watching on the silver screen, but until recently I never had the chance to chat with one of the all-timers, Liam Neeson. I was a monster fan of his from way back, even before he reinvented his career thanks to the breakout success of Taken. I grew up watching him in movies like Darkman, Rob Roy, Schindler’s List, and many others.
But, the thing is – when you interview a legend, there’s always that worry that they might let you down. Suffice it to say that was Not the case with Neeson, who proved to be an affable, friendly, and down-to-earth fellow. I had a very nice conversation with him about his latest movie, Absolution, in which he plays an aging thug trying to atone for past misdeeds. While our internet...

Two years have gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. More than a year has passed since the film had its world premiere at FrightFest… but now it’s ready for a wider release. Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has picked up Piper distribution rights and will be making it available to rent/own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, as of November 12th.
Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle...

Liam Neeson recently said that he’s planning to retire from the action revenge genre that injected his career with a second life, starting with “Taken” back in 2008. Neeson was 55 when he shot that movie — old enough to play a hardened former CIA operative, ageless enough that we believed in his strength and speed and badass vigor. In the 16 years since, the Liam Neeson vigilante B-movie with attitude became its own genre. I’m one of many who look forward to these films and enjoy, in theory, their no-frills sadistic mayhem. But the truth is that Neeson, with his towering presence and sinewy resolve, is always better than the movies themselves.
In memory, most of them blur together, and it’s amazing how much they all still feel powered by that speech in “Taken” (“I can tell you I don’t have any money. But what I do have are...

Plot: An aging gangster attempts to reconnect with his children and rectify the mistakes in his past, but the criminal underworld won’t loosen their grip willingly.
Review: Over the last sixteen years, Liam Neeson has consistently delivered a string of variations on his 2008 hit Taken. Outside of a handful of exceptions, the Oscar-nominated actor has made movie after movie about cops and soldiers using their particular sets of skills to take down bad guys who underestimate the elderly protagonist. As those projects have begun to blur together, Neeson has had some tricks up his sleeve with voice work in The Lego Movie, comedic turns in A Million Ways To Die In The West, and the occasional big-budget offering. The ones that utilize Neeson’s gravitas and everyman demeanor have stood out from the over fifty projects he has acted on or voiced during that span. You can add Absolution to that shortlist.

Sixteen years after “Taken” made him the most improbable action star on the planet, Liam Neeson has finally announced that he’ll soon be retiring from the genre that made him famous all over again — a career move he plans to implement by the end of 2025. To judge by the latest of the fun(ish) but frequently disposable B pictures that the lanky Irishman has built into a one-man cottage industry, Neeson is stepping away from his schlock at just the right time.
It’s not that “Absolution” is any worse than the awful likes of “Retribution” (quite the opposite), but this seedy crime saga makes it uniquely clear that Neeson’s special set of skills have taken him as far as they can. While even the most forgettable of his Redbox specials (see: 2022’s “Memory”) have found their own special way to iterate on the “aging tough guy with...

As 72 years old, Liam Neeson continues to be a force in the world of cheap action thrillers. Every so often, he has a bit of a hit, something that breaks free of the generic formula and continues to prove why the septuagenarian continues to be a force. Absolution is one of those films that turns Neeson’s action proclivities and age into a solid film about looking back on your regrets.
Absolution Review
Directed by Hans Petter Moland from a script by Tony Gayton, Absolution follows Neeson as a drunk, deadbeat father desperately trying to reconnect with his family, who doesn’t want much of anything to do with him. We punch through sustained moments of reflection with a few bursts of action. It’s a strong balance of somber drama and thrills.

Canary Black, starring Kate Beckinsale, delivers high-stakes action, intense espionage, and the thrill of watching a rogue operative outsmart her enemies against impossible odds. Directed by Pierre Morel, who also helmed Taken, this film introduces audiences to Avery Graves, a CIA agent forced to go underground after her husband is kidnapped by a group demanding sensitive intelligence. Unaware of her true identity as a spy, her husband’s kidnapping pulls Avery into a treacherous chase across Europe as she tries to retrieve the classified “Canary Black” file to save him. With relentless chases and plenty of stylish flair, Canary Black might have been something you wanted to see but did not get enough of because of the restriction that streaming brings with it. So, in the following list, I will not down 5 other movies that you might like if you thought Canary Black was interesting.

While Liam Neeson has proven himself a master of action thrillers like Taken, his latest film Absolution seeks to tread newer ground. In this 2024 crime drama directed by Hans Petter Moland, Neeson stars as an aging Boston gangster named Thug who receives a terminal illness diagnosis. Facing his mortality, Thug attempts to make amends with his estranged daughter and right the wrongs of his criminal past.
Thug finds himself in an unfamiliar role—seeking redemption rather than violence. Absolution marks Neeson’s effort to blend his talents in action films with a more serious dramatic storyline exploring family, regret, and coming to terms with one’s mistakes.
However, balancing these tonal shifts proves challenging. While Neeson delivers a committed performance, Absolution never fully delivers the catharsis of his best action films or the emotional depth of a serious drama.
With Neeson’s magnetic screen presence anchoring the film, Absolution shows...

An action movie starring the woman who took down the Predator in Prey and the man mountain lead of Prime Video's Reacher, written by the dude responsible for John Wick, and directed by the stunt co-ordinator for the likes of Logan and Avatar: The Way Of Water may sound like some kind of nutty genre fever dream, but it's actually very real — and it could be the next big action franchise. Per Deadline's reporting, Yautja ass kicker Amber Midthunder and actual Jack Reacher Alan Ritchson are set to team up on Painter, an all-new action movie poured from the pen of Derek Kolstad and helmed by genre veteran Garrett Warren.
Due to set sales at the American Film Market next week, Painter — per the description provided to Deadline — is set to centre around an expertly trained young woman (Midthunder) who's forced to put her skills to use when her father (presumably Ritchson) is kidnapped.

Unaware he’s married to a spy, Beckinsale’s husband is kidnapped – cue the baddies demanding a secret file, fancy action sequences, lots of gunshots and a nice trenchcoat
French director Pierre Morel oversaw the making of the first Taken film, the action thriller wherein former CIA-agent Liam Neeson pursues bad guys who kidnap his teenage daughter, and later abduct both the hero and his wife in subsequent sequels. So clearly someone thought there was no one better than Morel to direct what is effectively a remake of Taken, this time a story in which a female spy with a very particular set of skills must rescue her kidnapped husband, who knows nothing of her espionage career. The result is blandly generic with the gender flip not bringing much to the table apart from some cheerable lines where the heroine upbraids her opponents for using the slur “bitch” in the workplace.

From the director of “Taken” (2008) and “District B13” (2006) comes “Canary Black,” which follows a CIA agent who has to comply with a rogue agent’s demands and steal a top-secret file from a secure server to rescue her husband, even if that means going against her organization and risking inviting their wraths. If the story sounds familiar, that’s because it not only misses any familiar beats, it almost doubles down on them.
Even the action sequences are inconsistent. In some instances they utilize innovative camera work and coverage; in others, it still has the editing pattern that has characterized and plagued filmmakers from the Europa Corp school of filmmaking—rapid cuts, shaky cam, etc. Kate Beckinsale as the lead delivers a committed performance, while Ray Stevenson as her supportive mentor is decent, but for one of Stevenson’s final performances on celluloid, the film is a very bland affair.

Pressing play on an action movie like “Canary Black” is like ordering at McDonald’s. You’ve already agreed to lower your standards, so you don’t get to complain that it’s ultra-processed junk food. That’s what you signed up for. You were in the mood for middle-of-the-road comfort sustenance and that’s all you have any right to expect.
But we’ve all been to a fast food joint where, yes, you technically got what you paid for, but it was so greasy you could barely eat it. Or it got squashed for no discernible reason. Or it’s got a hair in it. Sure, you ordered off the dollar menu but even the dollar menu makes a few meager promises, and if they can’t even get that right… well, you have “Canary Black.”

Pierre Morel’s Canary Black stars Kate Beckinsale as CIA agent Avery Graves, whose life is turned upside down when her husband David is kidnapped. Forced to choose between country and loved ones, Avery embarks on a perilous mission to retrieve classified intelligence and save her spouse.
At the helm is French director Pierre Morel, known for pulse-pounding action flicks like Taken. Canary Black releases on Amazon Prime later this fall, and there’s potential for edge-of-your-seat thrills.
Yet Avery’s assignment may turn out more complicated than expected. Between betraying colleagues and eluding capture, she’ll face deception at every turn. Who can she trust as the line blurs between allies and foes? And how high will the stakes climb with a shadowy virus called “Canary Black” in the mix? Viewers will just have to hit play to see if Avery can keep her wits amid the danger and turmoil closing in around her.

Is Liam Neeson Retiring? Taken Actor’s Time as Action Star May Be Over - Main Image
From a Jedi Master in Star Wars to becoming Taken's legendary agent, Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson has become a household name in Hollywood. But is Liam Neeson retiring soon?
Considering his stellar roles in the past few decades, all good things must still come to an end someday. In this case, here's what Neeson has to say about his career's future.
Is Action Star Liam Neeson Retiring? What the Actor Recently Said
Best known for his 2008 government agent role in Taken, Liam Neeson barely had time to catch his breath as he went off to transform himself into an action icon.
Even in his 70s, Neeson has yet to take a pause from his butt-kicking time on-screen, some of which now requires help from his longtime stunt work collaborator Mark Vanselow.

Liam Neeson has been chatting – not for the first time – about giving up action films. But it seems he’s not done yet.
When Liam Neeson took on the role of Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jin in 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, it seemed like great casting. The film’s director, George Lucas seemed to have picked up on Neeson’s whole ‘strength in stillness’ energy that his characters often possessed, definitely the right vibe for a venerable and powerful jedi.
However, nobody really saw what was coming next, with The Phantom Menace's frenetic lightsaber duels and action sequences acting as something of a launchpad for Neeson’s new career as an action star.
By the time Taken released in 2008, Neeson’s newly acquired bona fides in the genre were legitimised and he’s since spent the better part of the two decades since making all sorts of action movies.

While he has perfectly proven his charms in other genres like 1993’s war-drama Schindler’s List, 1999’s family-sci-fi Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, and 2003’s rom-com Love Actually as well, Liam Neeson’s performance in the action genre still dominates all. To say the least, action films are the one thing he is better known for than most.

Over the years, he has had, perhaps, more action dramas than all the other genre films combined in his resume. And yet, with each passing day, the 72-year-old actor isn’t getting any younger. Even Neeson isn’t denying that he’s tired and running out of gas. That said, the action legend didn’t hesitate to signal the end of an era while sharing his retirement plans from action pieces.

Liam Neeson’s beloved run as an action movie star may be coming to an end next year. The Oscar nominee spoke to People magazine and teased his retirement from the genre that reignited the back half of his acting career. Neeson’s role in 2008’s “Taken” transformed him into an action icon, and he’s never stopped kicking butt on screen in the 16 years since. Even well into his 70s, Neeson continues to perform his own fight scenes with some help from longtime stunt collaborator Mark Vanselow.
“I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage,” Neeson told the publication. “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”
While Neeson has not yet set a specific date for his last action movie role, he did say that it will likely be in 2025, adding: “Maybe the end of next year.

Even Liam Neeson realizes he can’t rely on his “particular set of skills” as an action movie star forever, and it sounds like he’s finally ready to let go. In a recent interview with People, the actor said he would probably stop making Taken-style films by the end of 2025.
“I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage,” said Neeson, who does his own fight scenes, but leaves the tougher stunts to longtime collaborator Mark Vanselow. “You can’t fool audiences. I don’t want Mark to be fighting my fight scenes for me.”
Neeson added that he was considering an exit by “maybe the end of next year.” He continued, “I think that’s it.”
It’s worth noting that Neeson said he was moving on from action movies back in September 2017 — though he unretired just two weeks later. In 2022, the actor joked about still “getting away...

Liam Neeson will be taking a pause on starring in action films. The “Taken” icon, who has led the franchise since 2009, told People that he is planning to hang up his stunt-heavy leading roles in the next year or so. “Maybe the end of next year,” Neeson said of when he would exit the genre, referencing sometime in 2025. “I think that’s it.”
While Neeson is currently promoting yet another revenge-centric action film with “Absolution,” the actor admitted he is starting to feel his age. “I’m 72 — it has to stop at some stage,” Neeson said. “You can’t fool audiences.”
The “Love Actually” and “Schindler’s List” star added that the more intense stunt work required for his films is performed by Neeson’s longtime collaborator Mark Vanselow. Yet Neeson still does his own fight scenes, and when he no longer can, that’s when the actor has pinpointed his action movie retirement.

There was a time when Liam Neeson played a variety of roles, starring as the titular benevolent industrialist in Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List," for which he earned an Oscar nomination, and as Michael Collins in Neil Jordan's biopic of the Irish revolutionary. But somewhere along the way, the Irishman decided he was going to focus exclusively on playing grizzled badasses in a series of films that, honestly, have all coalesced into the same movie in this writer's head.
It started with "Taken," Neeson's hit 2008 actioner in which he portrayed an ex-CIA officer who is forced to go on a violence-filled quest to recover his kidnapped daughter. The film birthed two sequels, a TV series, and as Witney Seibold noted in /Film's ranking of the "Taken" movies, an entire subgenre: "the Post-'Taken' Liam Neeson-is-a-Violent-Dude subgenre." 2022's "Blacklight" is one example of this highly specific genre, and put simply,...

There’s the Black List, an annual survey of Hollywood’s most-liked unproduced screenplays that has been going on for nearly twenty years. For the last fifteen years, we’ve had the Blood List, a survey of unproduced thriller and horror scripts voted upon by industry professionals. In 2022, a website called the Stunt List was launched, “created as an artistic home to encourage writers to showcase their unique and original voices.” And last year, the Stunt List shared their first Dead List, a collection of “market-ready original horror screenplays.” The Dead List is back this year with 50 market-ready horror scripts, and you can check it out Here… and to spice things up, this year’s Dead List also features three “guest scripts.” The first of these guest scripts is The Overlook Hotel, a feature-length prequel to Stephen King’s The Shining that was written by former The Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara.

The Simpsons’ seasonal “Treehouse of Horror” episodes can get pretty spooky at times, featuring ghoulish creatures, gruesome murders, and, briefly, Bob Dole. But what about the show’s non-Halloween-themed offerings? Well, they could be pretty frightening too.
Over on Reddit, Simpsons fans are currently debating which non-“Treehouse of Horror” Simpsons scene is the scariest. For example, there’s the moment in which Homer’s face melts off (at least in Bart’s mind’s eye) after he forgets to pick up his son from soccer practice. It’s absolutely terrifying.
Or how about the time Lisa’s dentist showed her a computer simulation of her future without braces.
Another user suggested Bart’s “unwholesome” nocturnal kite-flying hobby.
And of course, there’s always toddler Bart’s freaky clown-shaped bed from the flashback episode “Lisa’s First Word.” Incidentally, this particular waking nightmare was based on a true story — Simpsons...

Before the sharp sentiments of “Schindler’s List,” the adventurous appeal of the “Star Wars” prequels, and the edge-of-the-seat thrill of “Taken,” Northern Irish actor Liam Neeson began his acting journey in theatre in Belfast. He moved to cinema in the 1970s with his debut performance in Ken Anderson’s “Pilgrim’s Progress.” Rapidly developing his filmography, Neeson left behind the innocent charm of his debut for more complex dramatic roles in films like “The Mission” and arguably his most well-known work, “Schindler’s List.” The latter earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor while solidifying his status as an A-list actor in Hollywood.
In his later career, Neeson moved away from the dialogue-driven dramas and towards the action thriller genre. His role as an ex-CIA father in “Taken” was the first of many action heroes the actor would go on to play. Though much of this period became tiring for his fans,...

In his previous collaboration with Romain Duris, “Our Struggles” director Guillaume Senez cast the Parisian star as a workaholic forced to spend a lot more time with his kids when their mother abruptly left home one day. Six years on, the pair have reunited to tell the opposite story of a father doing everything in his power to reunite with his daughter who’s been snatched away in another country.
If that conjures up memories of Liam Neeson growling into a phone, have no fear. The handiwork of “fellow French director, “Taken” director Pierre Morel is nowhere to be found. Instead, Senez takes a far more naturalistic approach to the streets of Tokyo, where a man named Jay (Duris) works as a driver for a private car service while searching for the daughter his ex wife stopped him from seeing nine years prior. Fresh off a Best Director win at the Venice Film Festival, “The Brutalist” has landed at A24. In a competitive situation, A24 acquired U.S. distribution rights following the film’s buzzy debut at Venice. The deal closed just after the first industry screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The three-and-a-half-hour drama stars Adrien Brody as a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who emigrates to America in 1947. By embracing assimilation, he wins a contract that changes the course of his life… but at what cost?
In TheWrap’s positive review out of Venice, critic Ben Croll wrote, “Taken as a whole, ‘The Brutalist’ both mourns and celebrates American ambition – the ambitions of an immigrant class trying for a new life with no guarantee of success, and the ambitions of a filmmaker filling a canvas with a lifetime of obsessions.”

Help! Now That I’m a Dad, I’m Having Trouble Jumping Across Buildings
Dear Remy,
I’ve been a stunt performer for 20 years, and nothing compares to the thrill of freefalling off a cliff or racing through a burning building. But last month, my career faced its biggest challenge yet: I became a father.
My daughter was much-wanted, and I had all these wild dreams of teaching her stunts when she got older. I even looked up toddler trapeze classes. My wife thought I was nuts.
But the moment she arrived, everything changed. She’s so tiny, so fragile, and suddenly, all I want to do is protect her. I used to be fearless, but now I can’t even think about doing the stunts I once loved.
I haven’t been back to work, even though my paternity leave ended two weeks ago. I’ve been ghosting my agent,...

Image Source: 20th Century Studios Plenty of people were taken, so to speak, by the premise of the 2008 film Taken — enough to make the film a big box office hit, spawn two sequels, and spin off a prequel television series. And, although Taken 3 was savaged by critics when it was released 10 years ago, there are still rumors about adding a fourth movie to the franchise. When we’ve spoken to Liam Neeson about the Taken films, he’s told us that he thinks people respond on a very basic level to his character and his motivations in the movies. (Click on the media bar below to hear Liam Neeson) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Liam_Neeson_Taken_.mp3 Taken and its sequels are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Sadly, this Loona story is winding down now that Finn freed Steffy and Chief Baker arrested Luna after Li overpowered her niece. While Luna still has more explaining and blaming to do, the Thursday, September 9 episode of The Bold and the Beautiful meant the end of the line for the once sweet and innocent intern turned murderous gold-digger. Now, it’s time to assess who the heroes and villains of this story were.
Heroes and Villains
Steffy (Hero): Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), witnessing Luna kiss Bill, sent this story into overdrive. Luna had no choice but to let her devious flag fly free as she drugged and then caged her cousin’s wife in an abandoned building that was about to be demolished. Steffy stepped up. Unfortunately, she paid the price.
Luna (Villain): She’s certainly not a hero. Luna is the villain of this story. However, her past doesn’t condone murder.
