A few years ago, Adam Sandler’s one massive hit comedy was reportedly getting a sequel. The plans even extended to developing a franchise out of it. But plans for You Don’t Mess With the Zohan 2 never took off. Sandler discussed his hilariously funny movie with podcast host Joe Rogan, and even touched up why the sequel is on the shelf now.

The satirical film was the fourth collaboration between Sandler and director Dennis Dugan. The film was released in 2008 and has some scenes that wouldn’t sit well with the audience today. But that wasn’t the main reason why Sandler, who made a film like Hubie Halloween in 2020, didn’t dare attempt to play Zohan again.

Mark Molloy's "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" succeeds in large part because it is unabashedly formulaic in a way many mainstream programmers are afraid to be nowadays (though we're not all fans here at /Film). Yes, superhero movies and four-quadrant family entertainments contain obligatory elements like Easter eggs for the properties' hardcore fan base and mid- or post-credit scenes to juice excitement for the next installment, but, narratively, the brand managers (i.e. filmmakers) feel a need to overdeliver. It's no longer enough to deliver a simple, well-told story. This is how ephemeral studio/streaming tentpoles wind up with bloated runtimes and obscenely inflated budgets. When viewers look up from their phones to check in on "Red Notice," they expect to see something of significance happening.
"Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F," which mercifully clocks in a shade under two hours (with credits), has its share of fan service, but story-wise,...

Back in 1988, the world saw the success of an action flick following a one-man war against a gang of ruthless thieves. The first Die Hard movie made Bruce Willis one of the most demanded genre’s actors and started the successful movie franchise.
Die Hard’s legacy lives on to this day too, as there are many attempts to ride the same hype train or to mock the genre’s classic tropes. These include quite a controversial action flick that is now reigning supreme in Prime Video’s global top.
Its plot revolves around an actor who faces a career crisis and sees a way out in his idea to make a brand new action movie that can rekindle people’s interest in him. However, you can already guess that everything doesn’t go according to his plans.

David E. Diano, a veteran camera operator with credits including Tombstone, The Fast and the Furious, Wedding Crashers and Spider-Man 3, has died. He was 71.
Diano died Jan. 22 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena of coronary issues after a battle with prostate cancer, his wife, still photographer Gemma Lamana, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Diano served as president of the Society of Camera Operators from 2003-04 before deciding not to run for a second term.
“To write that David was a one-of-a-kind friend to those of us who worked with him would be an understatement,” Soc historical chair Michael Frediani said in a statement. “His kindness, artistry and boyish smile endeared him to countess friends and fellow industry colleagues — and that is what set him apart from many,”
Diano shot 17 movies for cinematographer William Fraker, a six-time Oscar nominee, from 1983-2002. Those films included War Games (1983), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Baby Boom (1987), Memoirs of an Invisible Man...

Women’s History Month may be over, but that doesn’t mean that women aren’t leading many of Hulu’s top picks for April. The month begins with the premiere of Vanderpump Villa, a Hulu Original reality series that follows Lisa Vanderpump and the hand-selected staff members employed at her lavish French estate, Chateau Rosabelle. This next chapter in the Vanderpump saga is sure to be full of drama, decadence, and debauchery as the staff caters to Vanderpump, her wealthy guests, and their own desires.
Hulu Original Under the Bridge, based on the 1997 true-crime novel of the same name, also premieres this month. This limited series follows the investigation of Reena Virk’s disappearance –the fourteen-year-old left to meet some friends and never returned home. When the name of Adam Sandler is associated with a film project in the industry, the first thing that comes to the audiences’ mind is the genre of it being another comedy from the star, and rightfully so. For almost two decades, the star has constantly provided Hollywood with some of the most hilarious and comical films in history,
But unfortunately, the star has also given the world some of the most throwaway pieces of cinema in the process.

Besides Adam Sandler’s baggy polo and basketball shorts, there’s something else that people find quite fascinating about him, and that is the impressive box office numbers he holds. Truth be told, he is indeed a pioneer of a certain type of comedy in Hollywood.
Consequently, his films have carved out a unique space for themselves despite not being favored by critics. Well now, criticism may come and go, but Sandler’s got his finger on the pulse of his craft. There’s something about Sandler that people might never figure out, but one thing’s for sure, the Sandler magic is real.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

Comic Nick Swardson is following up a disastrous performance in Colorado with a promise to “make it up” to the town where he was escorted from the stage 20 minutes into his stand-up set.
On Sunday at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, an admittedly inebriated Swardson, 47, was removed from the stage to the sounds of an angry crowd booing him after he stammered through what appeared to be a nonsensical opening during his headlining appearance. On Tuesday, the Grandma’s Boy actor issued a statement about the incident.
“Just casually woke up on TMZ,” he wrote on X, referencing the news website’s article about the tanked performance. “Travel tip: don’t drink and take edibles in high altitude. F—ing brain diarrhea. I’ll make it up to you Beaver Creek!”
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to representatives of Swardson for further comment on the incident,...

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. It’s almost impossible to escape once you get involved with the mob, and if I were Emile Hirsch‘s Bobby Belluci, I’d start learning how to swim with the fishes. Vertical Entertainment proudly presents an Inside Man trailer depicting a bloody tale of deception, dangerous liaisons, and a disturbing body count. Based on actual events, Inside Man tells the story of Bobby Belluci, a disgraced police detective seeking redemption by going undercover to expose a violent crime syndicate. However, as Bobby sinks deeper into the mob, the price for absolution may be higher than he can afford.
Danny A. Abeckaser directs from a screenplay by Kosta Kondiloppulos. Taking place during the 1960s and 1970s, Inside Man stars Lucy Hale, Jake Cannavale, Ashley Greene, Vincent Laresca, Kyle Stefanski, Greg Finley, and Bo Dietl alongside Hirsch.

Actor Mike Batayeh passed away at the age of 56 at his home in Michigan on June 1. The cause of death has just been announced as “asphyxia hanging.”
His family originally announced that his cause of death was a “massive heart attack,” but this proved to be untrue. Steve Owens, Batayeh’s manager, also reaffirmed this statement.
His sisters spoke about their brother’s death, “He was a kind, sensitive, intelligent, and gifted soul. This is such a devastating loss of a huge life and Mike will be missed by us and so many people in all parts of the world.”
The police were called after he committed suicide, but it has not been released who called the police. They reported to his apartment on the third floor of his building based on a call for a “possible suicide.”
All that is known about the caller is that they are a male relative of Batayeh.

Mike Batayeh, who portrayed the laundromat manager Dennis Markowski in Breaking Bad and performed comedy sets around the world, has died. He was 52.
The actor died June 1 of a massive heart attack, his family told The Hollywood Reporter.
“It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that my sisters and I announce the passing of our dear brother,” his family wrote in a statement posted to Facebook. “He will be greatly missed by those who loved him and his great ability to bring laughter and joy to so many.”

Free streaming platforms like LG Channels seemingly add new channels all the time. There are more than 1,500 free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels available in the United States alone, and the amount of time consumers spent watching these channels increased in April, despite it normally being a period where TV watching decreases across the industry.
One thing Fast platforms don’t normally offer, however, are a lot of is live sports. But users of the free streaming service LG Channels will see that change this month, as the service is adding several live events to the schedule on the NCAA Championships Channel (channel 100), including tennis, lacrosse, and track and field events from both the NCAA’s Division II and Division III.
The live sporting events coming to the NCAA Championships Channel starting May 17 include:
Date Time (Et) Event Wednesday, May 17 12 noon Diii Women’s Team Tennis Finals Sunday, May 21 2 p.m.

Jennifer Aniston has named her favourite Adam Sandler film – and the choice is rather unexpected.
The actor has reunited with the comedian for Murder Mystery 2, a sequel to their comedy that broke streaming records for Netflix in 2019.
Both actors are doing the promotional rounds for the film, which is released later this month.
As part of this, Sandler participated in an interview with The Washington Post, which featured commentary from entertainment figures to have worked with the actor since his rise to fame in the 1990s.
It was for this interview that Aniston selected the Sandler film she thinks is the best.

The actor has reunited with the comedian for Murder Mystery 2, a sequel to their comedy that broke streaming records for Netflix in 2019.
Both actors are doing the promotional rounds for the film, which is released later this month.

Adam Sandler treated a delighted Gotham Awards audience Monday night with a rollicking stand-up session, thanking the org for a Performers Tribute after a long career with two guiding principles, “that people in prison need movies too, and TBS needs content to show between all those basketball games.”
He claimed the speech was written by his two teenage daughters, who were upset he hadn’t prepared one. He said he promised them he would, and he did by delivering it in a goofy Southern accent. “Thank you for givin’ our daddy, Mr. Adam Sandler, this prestigious lifetime, all-time prime time achievement tribute award. It means a lot to him, seeing as most of his awards are shaped like popcorn buckets or fake mini-Oscars that say ‘Father of the Year’, which he sadly purchased himself.”

Alright everyone, we’ve got all the spookies of October out of our system. Time to turn our eye to Hulu’s list of new releases for November 2022 to celebrate a new fall tradition of…hunky male dancers?
That’s right, Hulu’s biggest original title for November 2022 is Welcome to Chippendales on Nov. 22. This limited series stars Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the real life founder of the original Chippendales club of exotic male dancers. After hits like The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, Hulu likely has high hopes for this one.
The other big original series of note this month is FX’s Fleishman is in Trouble on Nov. 17. This is based on a 2019 novel of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as the titular Toby Fleischman in crisis. Before that, Hulu is teaming up with ABC for some true crime docuseries like Where is Private Dulaney?...

In February of this year Hulu unleashed the true crime limited series “Pam & Tommy.” The Emmy-nominated series prompted audiences to look at the nature of celebrity culture, misogyny, and complicity in the wake of the infamous 1990s sex tape that shaped the internet. This month Robert Siegel, one-half of the creative team that brought “Pam & Tommy” to screens, returns with a similar true-life story: “Welcome to Chippendales.”
“Welcome to Chippendales” follows Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s (Kumail Nanjiani) rise and fall in the adult entertainment industry. Matt Shakman directs the series, with Nanjiani, his wife Emily V. Gordon, co-showrunner and writer Siegel, co-showrunner Jenni Konner, and writer Rajiv Joseph among the executive producers.
Per the official synopsis, the sprawling true crime saga “Welcome to Chippendales” tells the outrageous true story of Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire. The series...

Training Day, Iron Man, The Master, Munich, Ford v Ferrari, The Bling Ring, Nightcrawler, Ray, Birds of Prey, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, Syriana, The Conjuring 2––meet Michael Bauman, the man who’s lit it all. That’s not even a quarter of the credits to his name, almost all of which, since 1994, list him as gaffer or chief lighting technician. Different productions have different titles, but it’s essentially the same job: he’s in charge of light. Where it goes in or out of frame, how it’s sourced, how it plays on screen, the strength, the tone, the hue, the shadow, all of it. In a medium created to capture light, that’s a vital role. He characterizes frames through details that guide our viewing experience, creating thematic throughlines with color, or heightening specific moments with dynamic shading, or falsifying daylight, or something else we take for granted.

Chicago – Dennis Dugan, in directing Adam Sandler (“Happy Gilmore”), Chris Farley (“Beverly Hills Ninja”) and John Ritter (“Problem Child”), can rightly be considered a comedy director icon. He also for his latest film, “Love, Weddings & Other Disasters,” developed the story and wrote the screenplay for the first time.
An impending wedding is the backdrop for the film, as it weaves multiple storylines regarding the search for love by a colorful group of characters. They include an inexperienced wedding planner nicknamed “The Wedding Trasher” (Maggie Grace), a fussy celebrity caterer (Jeremy Irons) negotiating a “blind date” (Diane Keaton) and a Duck Boat tour guide (Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor) looking for his Cinderella. It all comes together, connecting the love encounters and the nuptials. The film also features Melinda Hill, Jesse McCartney and even director Dugan takes a role.

Sometimes, it seems like everything Adam Sandler touches turns to gold. People just can’t get enough of the renowned comedian. Indeed, on top of his classic films like Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and many more still being quoted regularly to this day, his newer work has also been (mostly) beloved by the masses.
His latest original for Netflix, Hubie Halloween, was a huge hit with fans and quickly rose to number one on the platform’s charts, no doubt prompting everyone involved to get to work on a sequel. We also learned that his 2008 comedy You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is about to get a new chapter as well.
The 54-year-old actor clearly has a face that can make folks laugh even when he’s not trying to be funny. In fact, audiences don’t always need to see him to start cracking up. The Hotel Transylvania franchise,...

On top of being one of the funniest men alive, Adam Sandler might also soon be known as the sequel king of Hollywood. We’ve already heard that the Netflix original Hubie Halloween is about to get a new chapter, while the comedian’s Hotel Transylvania franchise is reportedly mapping out its fifth installment a year before its fourth even hits theaters, too.
However, these aren’t the only cinematic follow-ups currently in the works for the 54-year-old. According to insider Daniel Richtman, You Don’t Mess with the Zohan is also about to become a franchise as well, as a continuation to the 2008 action comedy is said to be in the early stages of development.
Despite getting panned by critics, the flick was a massive hit at the box office and more than doubled its $90 million budget by pulling in $204.3 million worldwide. The public may not be clamoring for more of the ridiculous titular character,...

There’s a load of great content coming to Netflix in November, but just as is always the case, there are also a bunch of titles being removed from the streaming service at the same time. Next month, the platform is losing 53 movies and TV shows. There are some classics amongst them, too, unfortunately, so you might want to fit in a last minute rewatch before they vanish from Netflix’s library.
On the first day of November, four titles are being removed, including horror remake Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, children’s animated sequel Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil and Gerard Butler action movie Olympus Has Fallen. 2017 horror Death House is also leaving on the 4th, while drama Into the Forest departs Netflix on the 6th and Jamie Foxx vehicle Sleepless is among those disappearing the following day.
Here’s the full list of everything leaving in November:...

Adam Sandler and Kevin James seem to be joined at the hip, and you rarely see one of them without the other following close behind. Sandler gave James his first role in a live-action movie when the latter was handed the glamorous part of Factory Worker in 2004’s 50 First Dates, back when he was still best known as the star of sitcom The King of Queens, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
Over the last fifteen years, Sandler and James have co-starred in the three entries in the Hotel Transylvania franchise, two Grown Ups movies, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Zookeeper, Pixels and Sandy Wexler, while James showed up as himself for an uncredited cameo in You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.

It seems like you can’t navigate through any of Netflix’s menus or functions without stumbling across at least one Adam Sandler movie, with the actor becoming an almost ubiquitous presence on the streaming service since first signing an exclusive deal to produce a string of original films that are generally terrible, but also hugely popular with subscribers.
Netflix plan on riding the Sandler gravy train for a while yet, too, following reports that they’re keen to tie the 53 year-old down for even longer even though the two sides only renewed their agreement in January of this year, with Happy Madison Productions picking up $275 million for their near-constant contributions to the Top 10 most-watched list.
The past few years have shown both sides of Sandler, with the critically-acclaimed Uncut Gems featuring his undoubted talents as a dramatic actor, while Murder Mystery saw him revert back to type and headline...

June 2020 is going to be an interesting month on Netflix, as the streaming giant tries to stave off a sudden influx of new competition (led by HBO Max) by offering a deep grab bag of new and licensed content that showcases the company’s unrivaled ability to offer just about anything it wants.
It’s hard to scoff at a slate of Netflix Originals that includes new films from both Spike Lee and Olivier Assayas (“Wasp Network”), especially when those films are served up alongside other contemporary finds like Sam de Jong’s “Goldie,” which had not found proper American distribution until Netflix picked it up.
Meanwhile, a small clutch of absolute classics are joined by some more contemporary comfort food, and an A24 treasure that splits the difference between the two (“Lady Bird”). Here are the seven best movies new to stream on Netflix in June 2020.

As the weather gets hotter and the film industry continues to face an uncertain future, one thing is crystal clear: There will be plenty of new movies to watch this summer — good ones, in fact — but there isn’t going to be a Summer Movie Season. There isn’t going to be a major blockbuster that makes you feel like a kid again (unless “Tenet” surprises); there isn’t going to be a silly comedy that you’ll associate with the smell of artificial popcorn butter for the rest of your life; there isn’t going to be a small movie with mass appeal that plays in arthouse circuit until the end of August. And it breaks our hearts.
So in lieu of a Summer Movie Season this year, we’ve decided to program our own — the single greatest Summer Movie Season that never happened.
