At 77, Steven Spielberg isn’t holding back! The legendary director just dropped some truth bombs about his post-War of the Worlds flicks, admitting that the films that followed didn’t quite hit the mark. It’s not every day you hear a titan of cinema reflect so candidly, but Spielberg’s honesty shines through as he acknowledges a string of less-than-stellar projects.

Steven Spielberg never had any qualms about the industry he adopted as his own. Hollywood, known for its brutal behind-the-scenes studio politics and overarching artistic ambitions, has instead been a reservoir of Spielbergian dreams. Action, adventure, science-fiction, drama, tragedy, romance, and musical – the director has seen it all and done it all.

Meanwhile, the industry has progressed at a steady pace to produce avant-garde cinema. Visions of the scale of Star Wars and Blade Runner were a far cry from the Hitchcock-era thrillers just as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones were incomparable to George Lucas’ creations. Spielberg, born between the old and the new, witnessed the changes and contributed to the evolution of Hollywood, helping mold it into a postmodern model of ideas.

Fans of Hergé’s iconic comic book hero Tintin have reason to be optimistic, as Andy Serkis, star of the 2011 film “The Adventures of Tintin,” recently hinted at a possible sequel in the works. Speaking at the Ace Superhero Comic Con 2024, Serkis offered a tantalizing update on the long-awaited “The Adventures of Tintin 2.”
The original film, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson, was a groundbreaking achievement in motion capture animation. It won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and set a new standard for the technology outside of Pixar’s domain. Despite its success and initial plans for a trilogy, the sequel has been in development limbo for over a decade.
Serkis, known for his pioneering work in motion capture performance, expressed confidence about the franchise’s future. Reflecting on his collaborations with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Phillipa Boyens, Serkis stated, “I’m pretty sure...

More than a decade after the 2011 release of Steven Spielberg’s criminally underrated The Adventures of Tintin hit theaters, fans of Hergé’s beloved characters continue to wonder if we’ll ever see a sequel. Andy Serkis, who voices Captain Archibald Haddock and Sir Francis Haddock in the 2011 original, says Tintin producer Peter Jackson is still working on another film featuring the dynamic duo of Captain Haddock and Tintin. In October 2011, Peter Jackson said he would direct The Adventures of Tintin 2. However, the silence on the project has been deafening ever since.
Originally, Steven Spielberg wanted to release The Adventures of Tintin 2 in 2015, but the legendary filmmaker’s schedule had other plans. At the time, Spielberg said a follow-up to the 2011 animated film would adapt two books in the Tintin saga. Screenwriter Anthony Horowitz was reportedly working on a screenplay but left the project in 2018. Jackson and Spielberg have yet...

Steven Spielberg has been one of the most prolific filmmakers in Hollywood since the 70s. The director has tackled every genre and has shown that he can confidently execute them with conviction. It’s hard to believe that such diverse films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, and Minority Report came from one filmmaker.

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest directors currently working today. With 50 years of cinematic legacy to his credit, the director grasped the essence of movie magic in the early part of his career. Following his Hollywood debut with The Sugarland Express and then his breakout movie Jaws, the director gave one valuable lesson to aspiring movie directors.

Spielberg understands what it takes to be a movie director in Hollywood and thrive in the industry. Obviously, a successful movie requires immaculate vision to trigger the very emotions of the audience but the development of the vision comes from the understanding of the craft and the director who has made a whopping $8 billion fortune has one advice that can elevate the imagination of filmmakers.

If, like me, you grew up reading The Hardy Boys (or Nancy Drew) and The Boxcar Children, and you also have a soft spot for Twin Peaks and other comforting yet disturbing Lynchian dreamscapes, then you should find a lot to enjoy within the quaint and creepy pages of Kris Bertin and Alexander Forbes' Hobtown Mystery Stories Vol. 1: The Case of the Missing Men. Set in a secluded Canadian town where a group of teenage sleuths kill time by trying not to be killed while solving macabre mysteries, Hobtown Mystery Stories Vol. 1: The Case of the Missing Men is now available in color for the first time from Oni Press (following its previous black-and-white publication by Conundrum Press), and Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Kris and Alexander in a new Q&a feature to discuss their unique approach to the teen sleuthing genre, their eclectic cinematic and literary influences,...

The king has returned ... and he's bringing a very familiar collaborator along with him. It's been a long, painful year and a half since Steven Spielberg last blessed us with his work in "The Fabelmans" -- look, we'd take a new Spielberg joint every six months if we could -- but there's some light on the horizon once more. One of the most talented and prolific filmmakers in living memory is already looking ahead to his next production, which we now know will hit theaters almost exactly two years from this very moment in time.

Steven Spielberg’s legacy is a much-renowned one, unmarred by time and the arrival of new talent. His films have established a new era in Hollywood, through Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park. Despite the presence of evolved technologies and newer creatives, not many have been able to recreate the scale of Spielberg’s career or overthrow his status as a living legend.

Andy Serkis is one of Hollywood’s finest go-to actors for playing motion-capture roles in films. He played Caesar in the Planet of the Apes trilogy, Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, and the titular character in 2005’s King Kong. However, many fans wouldn’t be aware of his role as a Performance Capture Consultant in Gareth Edwards’ 2014 kaiju film, Godzilla. Serkis explained that it was not a full-on acting role like his other monster roles.

Historically, the relationship between Hollywood and European comic books has been fraught with mutual distrust and cultural dissonance. Not to disparage Steven Spielberg — one of our national treasures — but his 2011 adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin was a bit of a disaster. And when La Femme Nikita director Luc Besson fulfilled a childhood fantasy in 2017 by bankrolling Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets out of his own pocket, the most expensive independent movie ever made landed with the thud of a global box office bomb.
But there’s hope on the horizon. European comic books — specifically, the Franco-Belgian school spearheaded by the Tintin character and his creator Hergé — are both a multimillion Euro industry and a sumptuous art form with dozens of successful franchises waiting to be developed. N

First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Spoilers for "The Fall of the House of Usher" follow.
You might call Carla Gugino Mike Flanagan's secret weapon. The actor has worked with Flanagan on multiple occasions, from "The Haunting of Hill House" to "Gerald's Game," and beyond. Their latest collaboration is "The Fall of the House of Usher," an Edgar Allan Poe-infused series now streaming on Netflix. In the series, Gugino plays Verna, a mysterious, supernatural woman who has a habit of popping up seemingly everywhere in various forms. It’s not difficult to scorn John Chau. A 26-year-old evangelical Christian with a taste for outdoor adventure, he undertook a one-man mission in 2018 to North Sentinel Island, an extremely remote and unreached part of India, to bring the gospel of Jesus to the Sentinelese. Even if you don’t know the story, it’s clear from the start of the new National Geographic documentary The Mission that things did not go well. The film is a reminder that, from the non-missionary perspective, and even from a less reckless missionary perspective,...

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

Currently among Gold Derby’s top 10 films likely to receive Best Picture bids at this year’s Oscars are “The Color Purple” and “Maestro.” What both movies have in common is that they happen to be produced by Steven Spielberg. If they both get in as expected, this would be the first time Spielberg personally received Oscar nominations for two different movies in the same year.
“The Color Purple” follows Celie Harris Johnson (Fantasia Barrino), an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s. Spielberg was previously nominated for producing the 1985 film adaptation of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, which he also directed. This new movie, which is adapted from the 2005 Tony-winning stage musical iteration, is currently in fifth place for Best Picture with 11/1 odds.

Veteran Hollywood exec Katie Martin Kelley is joining Warner Bros.’ movie studio as executive vp of communications, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Wednesday.
Her arrival at the studio’s Burbank lot isn’t a total surprise, considering she worked closely with Warner Bros. Picture Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy when the duo ran MGM.
In her new role, Martin Kelley will lead media relations and corporate communications for the film group, including Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema and the newly rebranded Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. She’ll report to De Luca and Abdy.
In a twinned move, Wbd announced earlier on Thursday that Candice McDonough has been appointed to the newly-created role of executive vp of publicity and communications for DC Studios, the arm run by co-chairmen and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Steven Spielberg’s unprecedented five-decade stint at the apex of Hollywood owes as much to his versatility as his filmmaking talents. Since bursting onto the scene with “The Sugarland Express” in 1974, the director has proven himself capable of working in nearly every genre imaginable, oftentimes in the same year.
After helping to create the modern summer blockbuster with early hits like “Jaws” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Spielberg never rested on his laurels. He spent the 1980s alternating between family hits, like “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial,” and more dramatic fare, such as “The Color Purple,” while still finding time to direct the original “Indiana Jones” trilogy.
The most legendary example of Spielberg’s omnivorous approach to filmmaking came in 1993, when he managed to release “Jurassic Park” and “Schindler’s List” in the same year. The summer dinosaur flick became a cultural phenomenon and introduced the world to the miracles...

The miracle of friendship rather than the image of electric sheep is what occupies the subconscious of the charming android gleefully strolling through “Robot Dreams,” Spanish director Pablo Berger’s first animated venture. Fashioned into moving form from the graphic novel by Sara Varon, this hand-drawn buddy dramedy preserves both the cartoon strip aesthetic and lack of dialogue of the source material for a delightfully bittersweet animated wonder that embodies the medium’s most purely cinematic qualities. Now the fierce battle for the title of the best animated film of the year has a new strong contender.

Comic book movies are everywhere. At the beginning of the millennium, comic and graphic novel adaptations were uncommon, with the critical failure of "Batman and Robin" putting the breaks on many studios' plans for future superhero fare. Nowadays, we are spoiled by the veritable bounty of comic book re-imaginings, from the indomitable machine of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the many spin-offs of "The Walking Dead" to the Oscar-winning success of "Joker." We live in a time where even "Madame Web" is getting a big-budget film. Truly, our cup runneth over.
Of course, the trend is currently for superheroes and hasn't expanded much beyond that limited subgenre. Comic books are like any other artistic medium: they encompass seemingly limitless potential across styles, themes, genres, and intents. There are exceptions, from the mundane realism of "Ghost World" and "American Splendor" to the rip-roaring golden age adventuring of "The Adventures of Tintin.

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

The Pink Ladies of “Grease,” the most colorful Rydell High students, are back on April 6 on Paramount+. However, this won’t be the same collection of young women from the original film — or even its cult classic sequel. This round, we see how the popular clique got its start. The girls now have a show of their own: “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies,” a salute to 1950s teens who refuse to conform to conventional standards. The new musical series shows us Rydell High before Sandy and Danny start strutting down the halls. The show stars Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara.
Watch the “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” trailer:
Paramount+ is also producing an original series “Fatal Attraction,” based on the 1980s hit thriller. The TV version refocuses the lens, exploring a modern approach to women, infidelity, personality disorders, and coercive control. It’s...

When movie fans think of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, they tend to think of Edgar Wright's Cornetto trilogy. The British duo starred in a trio of beloved, farcical favorites — "Shaun of the Dead," "Hot Fuzz," and "The World's End" — in the 2000s and 2010s, with Pegg co-writing all three films. The Cornetto trilogy might be Pegg and Frost's comedic opus, but it's not the only wild, genre-bending comedy project they've done together. There comes a time in every comedy lover's life when they must ask, for better or worse: "hey, remember 'Paul'?!"
Part road trip buddy comedy, part weird science fiction, "Paul" might be the type of film the phrase "your mileage may vary" was made for. I remember laughing hysterically at some parts of the movie about a space alien (Seth Rogen) on the run from the Secret Service with a couple of geeks, but being put off by other parts.

For someone who is the most financially successful filmmaker of all time and reshaped Hollywood, Steven Spielberg is weirdly ignored by the Academy Awards. The man has a cavalcade of masterpieces under his belt, yet he has not won a Best Director trophy since 1999 with "Saving Private Ryan" or Best Picture since 1994 with "Schindler's List," which also happens to be the only film of his to have won that award. More time has elapsed between the release of his first theatrical feature film, "The Sugarland Express," and "Schindler's List" than between "Saving Private Ryan" and today, and in those 24 years, Spielberg has yet to display another Oscar on his mantle.
This year could have been the year to rectify that with "The Fabelmans." When his heavily autobiographical film won the Audience Award at this past year's Toronto International Film Festival, we all thought it was finally going to be his time again.

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, Steven Spielberg takes us to school with a one-shot masterclass in "The Adventures of Tintin")
Honestly, it's not even fair how good Steven Spielberg is at his job. You'd think that anyone would simply call it a day after breaking the mold and defining the very concept of the summer blockbuster, pumping out family-friendly classics one after another, capturing the country's post-9/11 fears with brutal succinctness, and taking a well-earned victory lap with the Oscar-nominated and semi-autobiographical "The Fabelmans." But noooo, the greatest filmmaker alive had to go a step further and conquer another medium altogether -- motion-capture animation -- and do so to incredible results.
Sure, "The Adventures of Tintin" didn't exactly light the world on fire upon release back in 2011, but time has been...

Taking home the Golden Globe for best animated feature film, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” just made Netflix the first streamer ever to win the category. Del Toro made history for himself, too, as the first Latino winner.
Accepting the Golden Globe, del Toro proclaimed that “animation is cinema,” continuing, “Animation is not a genre for kids, it’s a medium.”
Since the category’s inception in 2006, only four winners of the Globes’ animation category have failed to win at the Oscars: “Cars” (2006), “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011), “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “Missing Link” (2019). They lost to fellow Globe-nominees “Happy Feet,” “Rango,” “Big Hero 6” and “Toy Story 4,” respectively. Steven Spielberg’s “Tintin” is the only film to win the Globe and not receive an Oscar nom.

How the Editors of ‘The Fabelmans’ Helped Spielberg Convey the Emotional Truth of His Personal Story
When it came to editing Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical “The Fabelmans” (available to stream on PVOD), it didn’t matter to editors Michael Kahn and Sarah Broshar which story belonged to Spielberg and which to Sammy Fabelman, his onscreen alter ego. They merged into a single legendary tale, echoing John Ford’s “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” which figures prominently in the film. What mattered most was capturing the authentic spirit of the director’s origin story, a dramatization of his uprooted childhood and parents’ divorce, his journey West to the Promised Land of Hollywood, and embrace of movies and filmmaking for escape and empowerment.
“It’s gotta be a real story about Steven and why he picks the movies he does, but this is quite clear why he picked this one,” Kahn told IndieWire. He’s cut every Spielberg movie since 1977’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,...

Every 10 years, the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound magazine asks hundreds of film critics to name what they believe to be the 10 greatest movies of all time. From this, a master list of the 100 Greatest Films of All Time is compiled. Once released, there's a brief period of effusion followed by days of rage. How could "[insert masterpiece here]" rank below so many films that are clearly inferior, or, god forbid, miss the list entirely? For some, the final list is too esoteric while others find the list too beholden to tradition. Many correctly point out that there's historically been a decided caucasian male slant.

Previously announced additions to the upcoming fourth season are Susan Heyward (playing “Sister Sage”), Valorie Curry (portraying “Firecracker”) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as recurring guest star. We have a lot to cover in this, our last roundup of new and recent books on film and pop culture before year’s end—high-profile memoirs, the coolest collection of crossword puzzles in history, a dash of Mac & Me. So, let’s get right to it. Happy holidays, and happy reading!
Cinema Speculation by Quentin Tarantino (Harper)
Quentin Tarantino wrote one of 2021’s most notable film-related books, a tremendous novelization of his own Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He follows that success with what just might be 2022’s best film-related books, Cinema Speculation. It is a collection of essays built around films seen during his adolescence that impacted him greatly. Some, like Deliverance and Taxi Driver, are canon. Others, like 1973 crime drama The Outfit, are not. The experience of reading Speculation is akin to hearing Tarantino zip through his childhood movie habits—the text mostly focuses on films...

No more pencils, no more books, no more Oscar voters’ dirty looks! At least when it comes to accepting new forms of cinema.
Too often, the industry hears, “It’s good, but not for the Oscars,” or “That’s not something the branch will go for.”
As the Academy heads into the future with new leadership in place, CEO Bill Kramer, just-elected president Janet Yang and the 54-person Board of Governors have a chance to invite the casual movie lover along for the ride. The organization has the opportunity not only to broaden the appeal of its telecast but also to expand what it deems “worthy of achievement.”
Recently, we learned the Academy’s animation branch rejected Netflix’s “Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood” for consideration, stating it “does not feel that the techniques meet the definition of animation in the category rules” due to “extensive use” of live-action...

Every time someone takes a comic book character the world adores and decides to make an animated movie, there’s a risk they won’t do justice to the original designs. “The Adventures of Tintin” comes immediately to mind, since Spielberg and company made the bold choice of swapping artist Hergé’s appealing clean-line designs with appalling performance-capture zombies. Or 2019’s disappointing “The Addams Family” reboot, which effectively turned Charles Addams’ macabre sketches into benign, generic-looking balloon animals.
It’s a problem the folks at On Entertainment take seriously. They’re the ones who translated Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” to the screen, erring on the side of overdoing the CG equivalent in that case. Now, the same studio has done right by Jean-Jacques Sempé and René Goscinny’s Petit Nicolas — or Little Nicholas to English speakers, who are almost certainly less familiar with the source material (essentially...

Indonesian firm Msv Studio is well underway on production of “Ajisaka: The King and the Flower of Life,” the first of three hugely ambitious animated films it will work on this year.
Msv Studio is the animation division of Msk Pictures, which itself is part of the larger, Indonesia-based Amikom Group. Since 2015, Amikom says it has invested 20 million into the research and development of computer animation technology. Having readied its proprietary — and rapid — methods, it now plans to invest 100 million developing, producing and distributing up to 10 animated feature films over the next seven years.
Msk Pictures is led by Ario Sagantoro, producer of “Merantau,” “The Raid: Redemption” and “The Raid: Berendal,” the hit Indonesian action films written and directed by Gareth Huw Evans.
Deploying a 15 million production budget, “Ajisaka” tells an original story, recalling ancient times when the world was inhabited by three races: humans, Raksha (giants), and Vidya. The...

When thinking about our list of the 50 Best Action Movies of the 21st century so far, it became clear that action movies have taken two paths in the past couple of decades. On the one hand, most of the franchise IP blockbusters — especially superhero films — released to massive box-office hauls could qualify as action movies in one way or another, even if they’re less kinetic than pixelated. However, the action movies that depend less on fetishized source material have yielded some of the most personal higher-budget work around. When done well, an action movie can tell great character-driven stories through movement: drama made dynamic.
And that’s what defines so many of the movies on IndieWire’s list: Some are self-consciously quirky character pieces, from Jason Statham needing to keep his heart rate up at adrenalized extremes in “Crank: High Voltage” to Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci having sex...

Roland Emmerich, the blockbuster filmmaker behind “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and the upcoming “Moonfall,” credited “Star Wars” and superhero movies pumped out by Marvel and DC as “ruining” the film industry. Emmerich’s “Moonfall,” backed by Lionsgate and made on a reported budget in the $140 million range, is the increasingly-rare example of an original Hollywood tentpole.
“Oh yes,” Emmerich told Den of Geek when asked if the disaster genre has changed in recent years. “Because naturally, Marvel and DC Comics and Star Wars have pretty much taken over. It’s ruining our industry a little bit, because nobody does anything original anymore.”
Emmerich later added, “You should make bold new movies, you know? And I think, actually, Christopher Nolan is the master of that. He is someone who can make movies about whatever he wants. I have it a little bit harder, but I still have a big...

The disaster film has changed a great deal since Roland Emmerich first blew up the White House in Independence Day more than 25 years ago. Back then the genre had fallen relatively dormant following the glory days of Irwin Allen’s own golden age for cinematic mass destruction. But from the moment Emmerich’s on-screen aliens gleefully detonated the White House during a Super Bowl commercial in 1996, American and global audiences alike were ready for a new breed of spectacle.
Since that defining summer movie, Emmerich’s seen the genre ebb and flow, soar with humor and, in later years, reach for something a little more somber and sensitive. Yet when we sit down with him to discuss his latest bid in the format—this month’s high-concept sci-fi action-adventure, Moonfall—he’s reflective on just how hard it is to even make such a crowd-pleasing event that’s not based...
