The sci-fi subgenre where teens battle against a future dystopia was all the rage in the 2010s but seems to have gone out of style since then, or at least that seemed to be the takeaway from the Netflix movie Uglies, which came out the other month to applause from nobody. But The Hunger Games series, which kicked off the teen dystopia boom in the first place, is still going strong: the 2023 movie The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, a prequel about future dictator Coriolanus Snow Snow, did very well. When author Suzanne Collins revealed that she was writing another prequel, this time about Katniss Everdeen's mentor Haymitch Abernathy, Lionsgate announced it was making a movie version at the exact same time. Plucky teens will fight to the death and you'll like it!
Anyway, the prequel is called Sunrise on the Reaping, and it's set around 25 years before Katniss entered...

British artist-turned-filmmaker Steve McQueen is tired of being defined by other people. Since he broke out with 2008’s Irish prison drama “Hunger” — along with Michael Fassbender — each film has been completely different from the last. “Shame” (2011) was a provocative portrait of a sex addict (Fassbender), while Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave” (2013) turned Lupita Nyong’o into an Oscar-winning star and grossed $187.7 million worldwide. “Widows” (2018) was a less successful foray into an American genre picture. And back in Britain, his 2020 “Small Axe” limited TV series and 2023 documentary “Occupied City” earned raves.

Two years ago, it was announced that Sam Claflin, who may be best known for playing Oswald Mosley on Peaky Blinders, Finnick Odair in the Hunger Games franchise, and Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & the Six, had signed on to star in the supernatural thriller Bagman, from Hunger Games‘ home studio Lionsgate. The finished film received a theatrical release at the end of September, but it seems that few movie-goers noticed. Maybe Bagman will catch more attention now that horror fans will have the chance to watch it in their comfort of their own homes, as the film is set to receive a digital and VOD release this Friday, October 18th. It’s available for pre-order on Amazon, going for the price of $14.99.

Chef Ella works as a sous chef at Hain, a restaurant that’s not doing so well. When her boss, Chef Chico, the head chef, as well as the guy she’s interested in, falls into a coma, the survival of the restaurant falls on her shoulders. With the help of her fellow chefs, patrons, and a mystery man named Raymond in the mix, will Ella be able to save Hain from an inevitable disaster? Replacing Chef Chico is set in the fine dining restaurant Hain, which combines Filipino dishes with a special Hain experience that is like no other. Chico and Ella are actually poles apart, especially at work, but somehow, after work, everything is forgotten. This is the first time I’ve watched anything Filipino, and my initial reaction was surprise at the predominantly English dialogue of the show.

Aoy In Netflix’s ‘Hunger’ (2023), Explained: Why Does Aoy Return To Her Roots After Tasting Success?
Sitisiri Mongkolsiri’s Netflix movie “Hunger” is a play on the word, reflecting the literal and metaphorical sense of what Hunger can mean. For the poor, Hunger is the burning sensation of an empty stomach that craves succor so that sleep can arrive as an escape from the realities of poverty. For the wealthy, Hunger is the craving the elites have to exhibit their wealth to others and remind everyone of their social standing in the world. In Mongkolsiri’s movie, Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying plays the role of Aoy, a cook in her family’s restaurant who gets a ticket to escape poverty and achieve fame. Aoy does accept the offer, and for a while, she lives a life of success, but she chooses to return to her roots by the end of the movie. Let’s find out why.

In an array of “eat-the-rich” narratives, “Hunger” attempts to tell a similar tale mixed with the power of passion. From the trailer alone, “Hunger” gives off “The Menu” vibes, adding cultural context through a Thai lens, but unfortunately, it’s neither as entertaining nor as impactful due to its tedious pacing and on-the-nose presentation of the concept. Visually, it is charming, and Bangkok looks as dreamy as ever. The trouble is not the concept but the execution. The director of the hit series “Girl From Nowhere,” Sitisiri Mongkolsiri, brings out his thriller instincts in “Hunger,” drenching it in blood and darkness but failing to pack a punch, unlike the aforementioned series. Personally, I think there should’ve been more cultural involvement in “Hunger” than the blatant display of the class divide in Thailand.

Josh Brolin blames director Jimmy Hayward and studio interference for the failure of 'Jonah Hex'.The 52-year-old actor starred in the lead role of the 2010 comic book movie, which was a critical and commercial flop, and he thinks he "still owes" his co-stars an apology because of what the film turned out to be, which he blames on the filmmaker going "out partying" instead of devoting all his time to the project. He told Variety: "It was not successful creatively or monetarily. I mean, everybody knows how I feel about 'Jonah Hex'."But the biggest thing with 'Jonah Hex' is rushing into hiring somebody. I remember Jeff Robinov, who I’m still close with, who was running Warner Brothers at the time and he was like, look, you’ve got to get a director in the next two weeks, otherwise we’ve got to can this thing.

Sir Steve McQueen is warning his unflinching film on the Grenfell Tower disaster will leave audiences “disturbed”.The Oscar-winning ’12 Years a Slave’ director shot his movie of the burned out husk of the high-rise flat block from a helicopter – just before its charred remains were shrouded in white plastic emblazoned with a giant green heart – as a stark reminder of the brutal destruction the building represents – and of the fact not one person or firm has been punished for their role in the 72 deaths in the inferno there on June 14, 2017.McQueen told The Guardian he wanted to use the 24-minute film, soundtracked only by natural noise, to ensure people didn’t get “want to let people off the hook” when it came to the reality of the tragedy. He said: “You must understand that the violence that was inflicted on that community was no joke.“I didn’t want to let people off the hook.

"Do it until it's right!" Netflix has launched the official trailer for an intense thriller film called Hunger, made in Thailand about the food industry in Thailand. At first glance this reminds me of The Menu, but it also seems a bit more like FX's "The Bear" meets Eyes Wide Shut (yeah check it out). With a few sprinkles of The Platform thrown in. "Experience the kind of hunger you have never seen before... in Hunger." A woman running her family's noodle restaurant receives an invite to join the fine-dining industry under the tutelage of an infamous chef. Model Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying stars as Amy, a young woman who gets taken into a high society cooking company called "Hunger" and learns how insane people are up there. The film also stars Nopachai Jayanama and Gunn Svasti Na Ayudhya . This will be streaming on Netflix in April worldwide - I definitely need to watch this.

Elijah Bynum didn’t want to look the man in the eye. No one at the gym did. He was massive, a bodybuilder who inspired fear because of his size.
“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.
It was relatively early in the pandemic. Bynum had been thinking a lot about isolation, and wanted to craft a character forgotten by society. When he saw how people avoided this bodybuilder, something clicked: “You have an individual who is both feared and invisible — because of everyone around him. And I thought it was a really peculiar way for someone to move through the world.”
That was the genesis of Magazine Dreams, the new feature that debuted at Sundance last month and took home the creative vision jury prize. It is earning rave reviews for Jonathan Majors,...

Celebrated British filmmaker Steve McQueen’s Oscar-winning “12 Years A Slave” was released almost a century after D W Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation”, the first film ever to be screened at the White House, writes ‘Variety’. McQueen’s film, however, was not shown at the US President’s official residence. The director, who’s also a Camera d’Or winner for his 2008 film “Hunger”, spoke about it at an in-conversation event at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).
“It was just after that situation with Skip Gates,” said McQueen, recalling, according to ‘Variety’, the arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis ‘Skip’ Gates by Sergeant James Crowley. It was a suspected case of racial profiling that stirred a major controversy for then-President Barack Obama, who was accused of having allegedly taken sides by going public with his view that the local police department had acted “stupidly”.

This article contains major spoilers for "Pearl."
We may still have a few more months to go, but I think it's safe to say that director Ti West has pulled off what is possibly the greatest one-two punch of 2022. Folks like myself appreciated what the "House of the Devil" filmmaker did with "X," a gloriously smutty ode to '70s exploitation. To sweeten the deal even further, it turned out that West already had "Pearl," a colorful prequel about the bloody beginnings of the titular farm-bound slasher through the eyes of Golden Age Hollywood, ready for theatrical release less than six months later.
As if he wasn't already on fire, West has already been given the go-ahead by A24 to round out his "X" trilogy with the '80s-infused "MaXXXine," which has yet to secure a release date. While the "Innkeepers" filmmaker is certainly an important ingredient in bringing these films to the screen,...

James Cameron is a man who seemingly knows nothing but success in his illustrious filmmaking career. From "The Terminator" to "Titanic," the man has proved time and time again that seemingly nobody understands the moviegoing masses better than him. But his crowning achievement in that department remains 2009's "Avatar," which remains the highest-grossing movie in the history of the box office. It was dethroned for a short period by "Avengers: Endgame," only to take the crown once again last year thanks to a re-release in China.
That re-release helped get theaters in the country back on their feet in the wake of the pandemic. Similarly, Cameron looks to wake up the box office again later this year with the long-awaited "Avatar: The Way of Water," the sequel to his 2009 smash hit blockbuster. It is expected to be the first of four (count 'em four!) sequels that will be released in the coming years.

Mia Goth may not have a film school degree, but she’s well-versed in her cinematic influences.
The “X” actress made her film debut in Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” in 2013 and now lands her first screenwriting credit with “X” prequel film “Pearl,” in theaters September 16. To portray the titular teen dreaming of stardom, while hiding slasher tendencies, Goth looked towards Björk in “Dancer in the Dark” and Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?” as inspirations.
Pearl and West also drew from Michael Fassbender’s extended monologue from “Hunger,” directed by Steve McQueen, for a particularly taxing scene. But the scariest part of playing Pearl proved to be the loftiness by which Goth and co-writer/director Ti West set out to capture her breaking point, rather than her bloody outbursts.

Last fall the Amazon anthology series “Small Axe” blurred the lines between cinema and television. Consisting of five films that explore the West Indian immigrant community in the UK, it was a favorite of both film and TV critics. But will it be favored by the Emmys? Scroll down and follow the links to watch four in-depth interviews with below-the-line artists from the ambitious project.
“Small Axe” was directed and co-written by Steve McQueen, who became the first (and still only) Black producer to win a Best Picture Oscar when his film “12 Years a Slave” won top honors for 2013. He’s also known for the acclaimed films “Hunger,” “Shame,” and “Widows,” and film journalists were so impressed by his five-film achievement that the Los Angeles Film Critics Association made the unusual choice of awarding it Best Picture.

Filmmaker Dee Rees made history on June 29 when her debut feature “Pariah” joined the Criterion Collection, making the Oscar and Emmy nominee the first Black American woman to have her work included. Before Rees, Euzhan Palcy, who is from Martinique, was the lone Black woman to have a film (1989’s “A Dry White Season”) selected.
“It feels like a formal acknowledgment of the film’s impact to the canon and being a part of the culture,” Rees tells Variety of having her movie chosen. “Even though artists have to try to find your validation from inside, it’s nice to be seen.”
And as a Black filmmaker in particular, Rees adds, “it’s important to be included for future generations of filmmakers, if [Criterion] is the thing that’s being taught in schools.”

Exclusive: Sacred Hunger, the Booker Prize-winning novel by Barry Unsworth, is set for a small-screen remake.
Plan B and Marshall exec producer Chris Bongirne and his production company Smokestack Films have teamed up with financier Stephen Leist to acquire the rights to the book, which follows the journey of a struggling young English doctor aboard 18th century slave ship the Liverpool Merchant.
The book was published in 1992 and it shared the Booker Prize that year with Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient, which went on to become Anthony Minghella’s Oscar-winning film starring Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Sacred Hunger begins when the ship is stricken by disease, watching as its crew and their cargo of African prisoners, meant for the slave trade, unite in mutiny, a move that will ultimately free both from the period’s oppressive and dehumanizing grip of commerce and greed.

Joshua Ray Walker kicked off a tour with the duo Carolina Story on Wednesday night at City Winery in Nashville, delivering a tight 30-minute set of songs off his two stellar albums, Wish You Were Here and Glad You Made It. Alas, the Texas singer-songwriter’s cover of Lionel Richie’s “Hello” didn’t make the set list.
But Walker delivers the goods on Friday with a new studio recording of the 1984 hit, along with a cheeky shot-by-shot remake of Richie’s iconic music video.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller.
