There are no capes and there is no spandex in Dampyr, the fantasy horror film by Italian director Riccardo Chemello. But the English-language feature, which has been a surprise hit on Netflix, is the first entry in what you could call the Bonelli Cinematic Universe.
The vampire-hunter tale, starring Wade Briggs, Stuart Martin, Frida Gustavsson, Sebastian Croft, David Morrissey and Luke Roberts, is the first of a new wave of comic-book adaptations from Bonelli Entertainment, the Italian publisher billed as Italy’s answer to Marvel.
The film, which cracked the top 3 on Netflix’s US service, is the origin story of Harlan Draka, a Serbian dampyr, or half-breed offspring of a vampire dad and human mother, whose blood has the power to kill the undead. Draka was first introduced to Italian comic fans 20 years ago — the collapse of the former Yugoslavia and the 1990s Balkan war is the comic’s...

Christopher Nolan rightly is credited as a champion of the theatrical experience. And the success of “Oppenheimer” (Universal) in theaters, and as a superior experience both in presentation and as part of a communal event, is one of the great cinematic successes of the year.
That began on July 21, the same day of course that “Barbie” (Warner Bros.) opened. Greta Gerwig’s film of course was even bigger (domestic gross $636 million to $325 million for “Oppenheimer”). But apart from the difference of degree of their respective huge successes, after their parallel debut, their release strategies veered.
“Barbie” had a 52 day window before being released to PVOD (at $24.99 to rent) on September 12. “Oppenheimer,” with Universal catering to Nolan’s preferences, waited 120 days, and at $19.99 to rent.
It’s an interesting case study on the value of a delayed release. A look at each film’s theatrical run and subsequent home play suggests WB made the smarter move.

You must have surely heard about vampires, but have you got any idea what a ‘Dampyr’ is? I certainly had no clue that characters like Blade belonged to the Dampyr category. Riccardo Chemello, the director of the 2022 film Dampyr has tried to bring the legendary creature into popular culture with vigor, and his effort doesn’t entirely miss the mark. The film is a story about Harlan Draka, who doesn’t know that his birth is the result of the union between a vampire and a human. In the Balkans, war is raging, and when the army is attacked by a bunch of vampires, Commander Kurjack brings in Harlan to see if he is a dampyr, a vampire hunter.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In The Film?
Many moons ago, a woman gave birth to Harlan after she had been impregnated by a ‘Master of the Night’ named Draka.

Japanese manga series “Tiger Mask” is being adapted into a live-action feature for the international market by Italy’s Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box and Japan’s Kodansha.
The popular manga, which follows a ruthless professional Japanese wrestler named Naoto Date who after making it big in the U.S. returns to his country and fights against evil forces, previously inspired an anime TV series made by Japan’s Toei Animation.
“Tiger Mask’ is a long-beloved figure both in Japan and Italy, where he’s been [considered] a strong, cool and timeless hero since the series’ first release in 1969,” Yohei Takami, head of Kodansha’s media business rights division, said in a statement.
“We are excited to be able to bring a new ‘Tiger Mask’ to global audiences, partnering with respected Italian filmmakers sharing the love and passion for ‘Tiger Mask’ with us, like Fabula Pictures and Brandon Box,” he added.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” executive producer Niels Juul is in Cannes with several projects based on IP from the vault of Italy’s storied Cecchi Gori movie company that include a remake of the Dino Risi-directed classic “Il Sorpasso” and “Kafka,” a script about the turbulent love life of Franz Kafka by John Briley (“Gandhi”).
The IP and some other assets of the movie company that once dominated Italy’s film industry and collapsed in the mid-1990s were acquired late last year by a group of Italian investors under the new management of Rome-based CEO Federico Canfora and U.S-based Javier Balliero Madrid. Madrid is president of the new company, which is backing a partial relaunch of the Cecchi Gori brand, which is behind such Oscar-winners as “Life Is Beautiful,” “Mediterraneo” and “Il Postino.”
They have a producing agreement with Los Angeles-based Juul, who is a former Cecchi Gori Pictures CEO.

“Dampyr,” an ambitious live-action movie adaptation of the eponymous cult fantasy franchise from Italy’s independent publisher Sergio Bonelli is launching Oct. 28 in Italian cinemas and opening Lucca Comics & Games, the unique event dedicated to cosplay and comics held in the medieval Tuscan town of Lucca.
Based on the first two comics in the “Dampyr” series, which runs to 300 issues, this 15 million English-language action thriller marks the first feature from the Bonelli Cinematic Universe, which Lucca chief Emanuele Vietina describes as “Italy’s Marvel.” Watch exclusive international clip, above.
Set during the Balkan wars of the early 1990s, the series follows Harlan, who is haunted by nightmares as he wanders the countryside making money pretending to be a Dampyr – half human, half vampire – ridding villages of what residents believe are evil monsters. When summoned by soldiers who are under attack by real vampires, Harlan finds out the truth: he is a real Dampyr.
The “Dampyr” comics were created by Mauro Boselli and Maurizio Colombo and written by Giovanni Masi, Alberto Ostini, and Mauro Uzzeo.
In the movie Wade Briggs (“Please Like Me”) plays Harlan, the Dampyr; Stuart Martin (“Jamestown) is Emil Kurjak, a former soldier who is Harlan’s sidekick; and Frida Frida Gustavsson (“Arne Dahl”) plays Tesla, a vampire who is Harlan’s partner.
The cast also includes Dvid Morrissey (“Good Omens”) as Gorka, Sebastian Croft (“Game of Thrones”) as Yuri, and Luke Roberts (“300: Rise of an Empire”) as Draka.
“Dampyr,” which was shot in various locations in Romania, is helmed by first-timer Riccardo Chemello, who cut his teeth directing commercials for, among others, Red Bull, Disney, and Armani.
A seasoned crew includes Giorgio Gregorini, who won the Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling for “Suicide Squad,” Vladimir Furdik (”Skyfall”) as fight choreographer, Lubomir Misak (“Game of Thrones”) as stunt coordinator, and Giovanni Casalnuovo (“Wanted”) as costume designer.
The producers are Roberto Proia for Eagle Pictures, Vincenzo Sarno for Sergio Bonelli Editore and Andrea Sgaravatti for Brandon Box.

If you were looking for someone who relishes the notion of kicking ass, it’s hard to imagine anyone more willing to do so than Swedish model turned actress Frida Gustavsson, who plays Freydis Eriksdotter on Vikings: Valhalla. Freydis is a character from The Vínland Sagas, which were probably based on oral histories of earlier historical events. According to these poems, she and her brother Leif left Iceland for Greenland, and then sailed further west to “Vínland,” which we now know as North America. In The Saga of the Greenlanders, Freydís is something of a violent troublemaker, but in The Saga of Erik the Red, she is a badass defender of her colony who can fight off invaders while eight months pregnant.
As for Frida, she enjoyed an extensive career as a model for fashion magazines and brands and is generally credited as the...
