Exclusive: Vertical has snapped up U.S. rights to Elevation, a new sci-fi thriller starring Anthony Mackie (Captain America franchise) and Morena Baccarin (Deadpool franchise). Directed by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) and produced by Brad Fuller, the film will be released in theaters later this year.

Elevation is set in a post-apocalyptic Rocky Mountains, where a single father and two women venture from the safety of their homes to face monstrous creatures to save the life of a young boy.

Also starring Maddie Hasson (Malignant) and Danny Boyd Jr. (Bruised), the film was penned by John Glenn (Eagle Eye), Jacob Roman and Kenny Ryan (Seal Team). In addition to Fuller, producers included Nolfi, John Glenn, Lyrical Media’s Alex Black and Natalie Sellers, Jeremy Kipp Walker, Joel Viertel and Mackie. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg served as executive producer, with his company leading the development, production, and financing of the project.

The Crown star Helena Bonham Carter is to narrate an animated Channel 4 adaptation of Clown, a kids story written and illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake.

Channel 4 has commissioned Eagle Eye Drama, the production company recently launched by the team behind global drama streamer Walter Presents, to make the 30-minute special using hand-drawn animation techniques.

Quentin Blake’s Clown will bring to life the adventures of a little toy clown, thrown away with a load of old discarded toys, as he goes on a journey to find a new loving home for himself and his friends.

Accompanying the program will be a short making-of feature, which will include contributions from Blake, Bonham Carter and the key animators and executives.

Channel 4 head of drama Caroline Hollick commissioned the special and it is supported by a grant from the BFI’s Young Audiences Content Fund.

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has commissioned six-part crime thriller “Before We Die,” starring Lesley Sharp (“Bob & Rose), Vincent Regan (“300”) and Patrick Gibson (“The Oa”), an adaptation of the hit Swedish series of the same name.

The Bristol, England-set drama follows a detective who becomes deeply conflicted when she discovers her son is playing a crucial role as an undercover informant in a brutal murder investigation. Croatian actor Toni Gojanović, who starred in HBO Europe’s series “Success,” also has a significant role in the show.

The adaptation is from Eagle Eye Drama, formed by Walter Iuzzolino, Jo McGrath and Jason Thorp, the creative team behind the global drama company Walter Presents. France’s Maybe Movies, producers of “Calamity,” this year’s Annecy Cristal best feature winner, along with 2 Minutes will adapt “Zombillenium,” a 2017 feature directed by Arthur de Pins and Alexis Ducord. The series will unspool in a creepy theme park whose employees are all actual monsters.

The “Champions” series is another spin off, this time from Javier Fesser’s same-titled live-action feature “Champions,” a local box office smash hit and Spain’s 2019 Academy Award submission. D.J. Caruso, who’s helmed such films as Eagle Eye, Disturbia, I Am Number Four, and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, directed Redeeming Love, which is slated to hit theaters spring 2021. Cindy Bond produced the romance project, through her Mission Pictures International label, alongside Simon Swart and Wayne Fitzjohn, via their Nthibah Pictures production banner as well as Michael Scott, David A.R. D.J. Caruso is in post-production on an adaptation of the classic Francine Rivers romance novel “Redeeming Love” that is a co-production from Pure Flix Entertainment, the faith-based distributor announced Wednesday.

“Redeeming Love” stars Abigail Cowen, Tom Lewis, Logan Marshall-Green, Famke Janssen, Nina Dobrev and Eric Dane and completed its principal photography in March in Cape Town just before much of the world started seeing shutdowns due the coronavirus.

Pure Flix produced the film with Nthibah Pictures and Mission Pictures International with “I Can Only Imagine” producers Cindy Bond and Simon Swart re-teaming on the project. The producers are in conversations with distribution partners and are eyeing a Spring 2021 theatrical release.

Veteran screen and stage actor Lynn Cohen, who was best known for her role as “Magda” on HBO’s Sex and the City and its two film versions, died today at age 86. No cause of death was given in the announcement by her management company.

Cohen’s television resume includes recurring roles on the shows Damages, Nurse Jackie, The Affair, and Law & Order. She also guest-starred on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, God Friended Me, Chicago Med and Master of None.

In film, Cohen co-starred as Golda Meir in the Academy Award-nominted Steven Spielberg film Munich. She also appeared in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Eagle Eye, Across The Universe, and Vanya on 42nd Street, among others.

Lynn Cohen, a veteran stage and screen actor who played Magda on “Sex and the City,” died Friday. She was 86.

Magda was Miranda Hobbe’s (Cynthia Nixon) housekeeper and eventually her nanny, and Cohen also appeared in both film adaptations of the show.

She talked to Cosmopolitan about her role in 2018. “It showed a woman of a different age who was smart as the devil, very bossy, and also understood sexuality, and they needed that. It enlarged the canvas on which they were working, that they would not have a typical old lady molding away in some retirement home somewhere, but a woman who worked, and didn’t suffer fools,” she said.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1933, Cohen had a wide-ranging career with dozens of credits in film and television and the stage. Among her most well known roles, she portrayed Golda Meir in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich,” Mags in “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” and also appeared in the films “Across the Universe,” “Eagle Eye,” the 2014 comedy “They Came Together,” and Charlie Kauffman’s “Synecdoche, New York,” among many others.

Her numerous television credits include appearances on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Nurse Jackie,” “God Friended Me,” “Master of None,” Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “The Affair” and “Chicago Med.”

According to a report by The Illuminerdi, the film has been in “active development” for some time, and is not just in the various stages of non-production in which The Expendables 4 seems to have existed for several years. Zoe Lister-Jones is writing, directing and executive producing the reimagining of the 1996 film. The story centers on a teenage girl and high school outcast who falls in with three other girls who practice witchcraft. As they cast spells and curses on those they dislike, they soon face the consequences of those actions. David Duchovny, Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, Zoey Luna, Nicholas Galitzine and Julian Grey also star.

Jason Blum is producing for Blumhouse, while Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing for Red Wagon Entertainment. Wick also produced the original film. Disney Channel actor Cameron Boyce, who co-starred in the network’s Descendants films and the TV series Jessie, died Saturday at the age of 20.

Boyce died due to an “ongoing medical condition,” his family said.

Paramount is in talks with “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” director D.J. Caruso to take the reins of its movie adaptation of the Nickelodeon horror series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”

The project was unveiled last year with “It” writer Gary Dauberman hired to write the script. Matt Kaplan is producing along with Dauberman, who’s a co-writer on both “It” movies, and “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” franchises.

“Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and ran as an anthology series on Nickelodeon between 1992 and 1996. It followed a group of teenagers who called themselves the Midnight Society and would meet weekly at a secret location in the woods to tell a scary story. The show was revived in 1999 for two more seasons.

Exclusive: CBS’ military drama series Seal Team has tapped writer-producer John Glenn (NBC’s Allegiance) as new showrunner for the upcoming second season.

Created by Benjamin Cavell, Seal Team was run by veteran Ed Redlich under a one-year deal he had signed for Season 1, with both serving as executive producers. Cavell and Redlich are departing the series as it is making a creative direction adjustment for Season 2.

Seal Team has been a solid ratings performer for CBS, tied as the network’s No.1 new drama in adults 18-49 and earning an early Season 2 renewal.

“Seal Team has strengthened our Wednesday lineup – routinely winning its time period with over 10 million viewers and allowing us to build an even more powerful night,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said at the time of the renewal, adding that the series also has been a top streamer on the company’s digital platforms, including CBS.

Production on Vin Deisel’s fourth installment of “xXx” is slated to go into production this December as DJ Caruso also returns as director, it was announced Tuesday.

Diesel and The H Collective have also purchased full franchise rights from Revolution Studios. Revolution Studios retains its rights to the first three films.

Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce with Diesel, Samantha Vincent for One Race Films and The H Collective.

The response from the Chinese box office was unprecedented. Bringing the next installment of the xXx franchise to The H Collective complements our diversified slate and mission to produce content for a global audience.”

Diesel has starred in and produced the five highest-grossing films in the massively successful “Fast” franchise. He voices ‘Groot’ in both the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films and will also appear in Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War” this April.

The H Collective and Vin Diesel’s One Race Films have acquired rights from Revolution Studios to the “xXx” film franchise and plan to begin shooting the fourth film in December.

Revolution Studios retains its rights to the first three films. D.J. Caruso, who directed “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” will return to direct “xXx 4” with Diesel reprising his role as Xander Cage. Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum will produce with Diesel, Samantha Vincent for One Race Films and the H Collective.

The companies made the announcement Tuesday. Diesel had said in early 2017 at the “Return of Xander Cage” premiere in London that Paramount execs had expressed interest in the fourth movie, but those plans were never solidified.

According to Variety, "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine is teaming up with "Eagle Eye" director D.J. Caruso for "The Art of Making Money," an adaptation of reporter Jason Kersten's fact-based novel "The Art of Making Money: The Story of a Master Counterfeiter." Frank Baldwin — no apparent relation to Alec, Daniel, William and Stephen — is writing the script.

The title refers not just to the creative component of moneymaking, but also to the story's central figure of Art Williams Jr., presumably played by Pine. It turned out to be her only produced screenplay; she died in a car crash the year after the film's release.

Paris -- "Eagle Eye" screenwriter Travis Adam Wright will bring his "Harlem Hellfighters" to France in a World War I drama directed by Canadian helmer Yves Simoneau, Wright said Tuesday.

"Lord of the Rings" producer Rick Poras has signed on to co-produce with Wright and help to secure financing for the project.

Co-written by Robert Davenport, "Hellfighters" tells the true story of black soldiers from Harlem who brought jazz music to France when they were sent to fight there during World War I.

Wright hopes to shoot the project in the U.S. and in Gaul with a cast assembled of "the greatest living black actors," he said in an interview.
