Karl Williams, the longtime Paramount Pictures publicist who was integral in campaigns for the studio’s Transformers, Iron Man, Star Trek, Indiana Jones and other franchises, died Sunday of liver complications at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Il. He was 52.
For those like me who worked with Karl, he was a hysterically funny, good-guy, cinema savant and ultimate fanboy — a trailblazer in digital PR before any studio employed such experienced flacks in the current Twitter/YouTube/Facebook/Snapchat-obsessed promo era. For reporters, he was the face of the studio he worked with, notably Paramount, where he spent the bulk of his career. And for those who annually spent time with Karl at Burning Man, he was that groovy guy who ran camp.
Even when Karl was the assistant to a bigger PR exec, he had the answers and the access, whether it was getting you into a screening or possibly getting you into a premiere.

Shia Labeouf may only be 34 years old, but his filmography already stretches back over 20 years and he seems to now be in the midst of the fourth distinctive stage of his always interesting career.
Having started off as a child star, showing up in productions like Even Stevens, The X-Files, ER and Holes, he soon found a steady career making big budget box office hits after leading Michael Bay’s first three Transformers films, Eagle Eye and Disturbia. Of course, along the way also came supporting roles in high profile efforts like I, Robot, Constantine, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
It wasn’t long, though, before he sort of went off the rails, constantly making headlines for bizarre and eccentric behavior. And though recent years have seen him reinvent himself as an acclaimed dramatic talent, it seems he’s now...

Having broken out as a child star and appeared in the likes of Even Stevens, The X-Files, ER and Holes, he became a fixture in big budget box office hits after leading Michael Bay’s first three Transformers movies, Eagle Eye and Disturbia, along with snagging supporting roles in I, Robot, Constantine, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Maybe Movies’ “Zombillenium” and ”Champions,” from Spain’s Morena and Películas Pendelton, feature among 90 series lined up to participate at this year’s Cartoon Forum which is scheduled to take place on site in France’s Toulouse over Sept. 14-17.
France’s Maybe Movies, producers of “Calamity,” this year’s Annecy Cristal best feature winner, along with 2 Minutes will adapt “Zombillenium,” a 2017 feature directed by Arthur de Pins and Alexis Ducord. The series will unspool in a creepy theme park whose employees are all actual monsters.
The “Champions” series is another spin off, this time from Javier Fesser’s same-titled live-action feature “Champions,” a local box office smash hit and Spain’s 2019 Academy Award submission. It turned on a basketball team of adult players with intellectual disabilities. The series will follow a group of kids with various levels of disability as they go to class and face growing up.

Shia Labeouf may have risen to fame in Disney Channel’s Even Stevens before becoming one of the most promising actors of his generation thanks to a string of hits like Holes, I, Robot, Eagle Eye, Disturbia, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the first three Transformers movies, but it wasn’t long before he took a turn down a troubled path that saw him quickly fall out of favor with Hollywood, leading to him walking away from blockbuster filmmaking and focusing more on indies.
There’s no denying that Labeouf’s behavior is often more than a little eccentric, but with the right material he can still be an incredibly magnetic and enjoyable screen presence. He’s well known for fully throwing himself into his characters and his next role looks to be no different in that regard, with the actor already turning heads for...

Over the last little while, Shia Labeouf has probably become better known for his strange performance art rather than his acting talents. After securing a string of box office hits early on in his career like I, Robot, Constantine, Disturbia, Eagle Eye, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Michael Bay’s Transformers trilogy, his future seemed incredibly bright, with a rise to the top of the A-list all but assured.
But Labeouf soon turned his back on blockbusters after becoming disillusioned with both the process of making them and the resulting fame that came with starring in such big films. Recently, he’s been taking on smaller projects that let his performance do the talking and the 34 year-old has begun to build up a pretty diverse and eclectic list of credits lately, with critically-acclaimed turns in Fury, American Honey, Borg vs. McEnroe, The Peanut Butter Falcon and the semi-autobiographical Honey Boy.

In recent years, Shia Labeouf has arguably become better known for his bizarre performance art and spawning a thousand memes in the process rather than his acting ability. However, Labeouf eventually turned his back on big budget studio movies entirely after growing disillusioned with both the process and the resulting fame, and over the last decade he’s focused mostly on smaller projects that let his performance do the talking, instead of being surrounded by green screens and CGI.

Lynn Cohen, a veteran stage and screen actor who played Magda on “Sex and the City,” died Friday. She was 86.
Magda was Miranda Hobbe’s (Cynthia Nixon) housekeeper and eventually her nanny, and Cohen also appeared in both film adaptations of the show.
She talked to Cosmopolitan about her role in 2018. “It showed a woman of a different age who was smart as the devil, very bossy, and also understood sexuality, and they needed that. It enlarged the canvas on which they were working, that they would not have a typical old lady molding away in some retirement home somewhere, but a woman who worked, and didn’t suffer fools,” she said.

A spinoff to The Expendables starring Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas is reportedly in the works.
According to a report by The Illuminerdi, the film has been in “active development” for some time, and is not just in the various stages of non-production in which The Expendables 4 seems to have existed for several years. It’s tentatively titled The Expendables: A Christmas Story, because there really is not enough done with the pun potential of the characters’ ridiculous names, and will see Statham take center stage instead of his usual second-in-command position, with Stallone being relegated to more of a minor presence, although one whose influence will still be felt throughout.
Also attached to the project are a returning Arnold Schwarzenegger as rival mercenary leader Trench Mauser and Tony Jaa as a new character, and given the actor’s expertise in Muay Thai, it’ll doubtless involve the kind...

Brian Tyler was shaping up for a career in the Education field, studying for his Masters at Harvard University, but his love of music took over his soul and entire being. During his student days in Boston, if you were trying to find him on campus, you’re best bet was checking in the practice rooms at Harvard’s Cambridge campus or even the Berklee College of Music. Music was always with him, whether he was writing it, playing in an orchestra or being a session drummer with a band.
While in Boston, he composed a Requiem piece, a piece of music that would change his life. Word about the composition floated West and Tyler soon received a phone call from motion picture composer agency Gorfaine-Schwartz. The rest is history.
“I can connect the dots from that piece I did early on, all the way to today,” says Tyler. Off the Requiem piece,...

Paramount is in talks with “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage” director D.J. Caruso to take the reins of its movie adaptation of the Nickelodeon horror series “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
The project was unveiled last year with “It” writer Gary Dauberman hired to write the script. Matt Kaplan is producing along with Dauberman, who’s a co-writer on both “It” movies, and “The Conjuring” and “Annabelle” franchises.
“Are You Afraid of the Dark?” was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel and ran as an anthology series on Nickelodeon between 1992 and 1996. Exclusive: CBS’ military drama series Seal Team has tapped writer-producer John Glenn (NBC’s Allegiance) as new showrunner for the upcoming second season.
Created by Benjamin Cavell, Seal Team was run by veteran Ed Redlich under a one-year deal he had signed for Season 1, with both serving as executive producers. Cavell and Redlich are departing the series as it is making a creative direction adjustment for Season 2.

The companies made the announcement Tuesday. Diesel had said in early 2017 at the “Return of Xander Cage” premiere in London that Paramount execs had expressed interest in the fourth movie, but those plans were never solidified.

George Clooney wrote a letter to three student journalists from Parkland, Fla. and applauded Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school students for the work they've done surrounding March for Our Lives. The three students—Emma Dowd, Lauren Newman and Rebecca Schneid—took over The Guardian's website on Friday to help run coverage for the march. The young journalists attend the school where 17 victims were killed in a mass shooting, and are the co-editors-in-chief of the student newspaper the Eagle Eye. When the student journalists asked Clooney for an interview as part of their Guardian project, the 56-year-old actor declined the request but submitted a letter. In the note,...

Last summer, just as "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" was arriving in theaters, news emerged that director Michael Bay would produce and maybe direct an adaptation of the James Frey/Joby Hughes young adult novel "I Am Number Four," the first in a series of six planned books about an alien in hiding on Earth -- Ohio, to be precise -- while forces unknown hunt him.
Two months later, it was revealed that Al Gough and Miles Millar, creators of TV's "Smallville," had been hired to adapt the book into a usable script. The latest word is that Bay won't be directing; if I had to guess, it's because he's busy with the next "Transformers" movie. D.J. Caruso will step in to take the reins instead, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

James Tiberius Kirk already cheated his way to victory in the Kobayashi Maru test, and now he's putting his fast-thinking talents towards making money — well, his real life persona is, at least.
According to Variety, "Star Trek" actor Chris Pine is teaming up with "Eagle Eye" director D.J. Caruso for "The Art of Making Money," an adaptation of reporter Jason Kersten's fact-based novel "The Art of Making Money: The Story of a Master Counterfeiter." Frank Baldwin — no apparent relation to Alec, Daniel, William and Stephen — is writing the script.
The title refers not just to the creative component of moneymaking, but also to the story's central figure of Art Williams Jr., presumably played by Pine. The novel focuses on the real-life counterfeiter who conjured millions of dollars in false bills thanks to his amazing attention to artistic detail.

Moviegoers came back for a second helping of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but the new items on the menu, Surrogates and Fame, didn't fly. That led to a weekend that was off seven percent from the same timeframe last year when Eagle Eye landed. Standing as the only broadly appealing movie among recent releases, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs dissipated by a mere 19 percent, generating an estimated $24.6 million and lifting its total to a solid $60 million in ten days. Its drop was less than such comparable titles as Open Season, Meet the Robinsons and Chicken Little, though it may have a steeper decline in its third weekend, when the Toy Story double feature will claim much of its 3D attention. Surrogates plugged in with an estimated $15 million on approximately 3,600 screens at 2,951 sites, or a fraction of what the similar I, Robot started at. The science fiction thriller...

Shia LaBeouf's ideal girl is someone just like his mum - because his mother is the "sexiest woman" he's ever known.
In a candid upcoming Playboy magazine interview, the Eagle Eye actor recalls his mum's "goddess-group time" when she and her hippie pals would parade around the family home in the nude.
He explains, "It's literally a bunch of naked women tracing auras around one another's bodies with incense and then sitting together and humming for prolonged periods of time."
Although slightly embarrassed by his mother's free-spirited nature as a child, the grown-up Labeouf has learned to appreciate her naked form.
He adds, "Probably the sexiest woman I know is my mother. She's an ethereal angel. Nobody looks like that woman. If I could meet my mother and marry her, I would. I would be with my mother now, if she weren't my mother, as sick as that sounds."...

The eagle has landed -- at the top of the national home video charts for the week ending Jan. 4.
Paramount Home Entertainment's release of DreamWorks' "Eagle Eye," an action thriller that grossed $101.1 million in the U.S., soared to the top spot on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine's rental chart its first full week of release.
The film had been released with a Saturday street date, so its first chart appearance was last week, after just one day in stores (Dec. 27).
On the sales chart, "Eagle Eye" rose to No. 1 from No. 16, ousting Warner's "The Dark Knight" from the top spot. On the rental chart "Eagle Eye" jumped to No. 1 from No. 4, replacing the Universal Studios comedy "Burn After Reading" as the week's most in-demand rental title.
On the Blu-ray Disc chart, also from Nielsen VideoScan, "Eagle Eye" shot to No. 2 from No.

Fox is bringing "Romancing the Stone" to the big screen again, swinging into development a remake of the 1984 adventure movie and tapping Daniel McDermott to write it.
The original movie helped launch Robert Zemeckis as a director, turned Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito -- then best known for their TV work -- into film stars and established Kathleen Turner as a romantic lead.
Written by Diane Thomas, "Romancing" told the story of a repressed romance novelist who travels to Colombia to find her missing sister only to meet up with an American soldier of fortune. The two embark on a cross-country adventure involving a map, a jewel and a private police force. Thomas wrote the script while working as a waitress in Malibu. It turned out to be her only produced screenplay; she died in a car crash the year after the film's release.
No producers are attached to the remake.

Christmas arrived early for Disney as teenagers the world over swarmed to "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," celebrating the first big-screen sequel of the acclaimed Disney Channel originals with a weekend take of $41 million from 3,163 screens in 19 countries.
It was the biggest October opening ever in the international market and the biggest-ever overseas bow for a musical (beating "Mamma Mia!'s" $26 million debut), according to Disney International. It also claimed an average market share of more than 40% in each of its markets.
In the U.K., where the telefilms and best-selling album established a massive fan base for the franchise, "HSM3" hit the top with $13.7 million from 494 screens. Germany pulled in $5.9 million from 547; Spain, $5.1 million from 547; France, $3.8 million; Brazil, $1.7 million from 212; Denmark, $1.2 from 93; and Norway, $1.1 million from 90.
Whether the teen appeal of "HSM3" can help it reach the heights obtained by the female-driven "Mamma Mia!" remains questionable. At the moment,...

Talk about downsizing. IMAX, which has long touted massive screens as tall as eight stories, is introducing a new generation of smaller auditoriums it says provide an equivalent viewing experience.

Paris -- "Eagle Eye" screenwriter Travis Adam Wright will bring his "Harlem Hellfighters" to France in a World War I drama directed by Canadian helmer Yves Simoneau, Wright said Tuesday.
"Lord of the Rings" producer Rick Poras has signed on to co-produce with Wright and help to secure financing for the project.
Co-written by Robert Davenport, "Hellfighters" tells the true story of black soldiers from Harlem who brought jazz music to France when they were sent to fight there during World War I.
Wright hopes to shoot the project in the U.S. and in Gaul with a cast assembled of "the greatest living black actors," he said in an interview.

As a batch of less-than-blockbuster titles vie for attention during the postsummer downswing at the overseas boxoffice, Paramount's "Eagle Eye," Universal's "Burn After Reading" and Fox's "Max Payne" were among newcomers displaying moderate promise in early dates.
"Eagle Eye," the action thriller starring Shia Labeouf, took command of the international market with a weekend score of $11.1 million from 3,483 screens in 42 markets, its advance largely due to seven new openings led by a pair of No. 2 bows in Japan ($2.5 million from 306 screens) and the U.K. ($1.9 million from 361).
The Coen brothers' crime comedy "Burn," a split-rights overseas release involving Universal and territorial distributors, took in $8.7 million over the weekend, with Uni markets accounting for $6.6 million from 943 screens, chiefly from No. 1 openings in the U.K. ($3.5 million from 396) and Australia ($1.3 million from 215).

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe Director: Ridley Scott Release Date: October 10, 2008 Running Time: 128 min MPAA Rating: R Distributor: Warner Bros. - - - Yes, you've seen it before. It was only a couple of weeks ago that Eagle Eye, the Shia Labeouf flop, used the same device to drive its plot to hell, but unfortunately not back again. That movie’s characters had insight on how to defeat the odds of their fate thanks to people who could see them but they couldn’t see where their help was coming from. For the second time in a row since its release on October 3, Walt Disney Pictures' talking dog tale "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" has led the weekend box office chart. Staying firm at the #1 position, the Raja Gosnell-directed comedy adventure brings to the table an estimated $17.5 million to add to the total of $52.5 million over the past ten days of screening.
On the success of "Chihuahua" maintaining the top slot, it is suggested that one of the possible factors for the flick's triumph may come from the fact that the movie in which Drew Barrymore lends her voice is the only light comedy amidst the vast release of drama films.
Additionally, Chuck Viane, Disney's head of distribution, mentions that another potential reason may come from the entertainment factor. "But they're telling us we're getting more unaccompanied-by-children adults coming on their own. They're looking for a little entertainment," he shares. "The axiom...
