I stumbled upon the 2020 sci-fi horror movie "Cyst" here in 2021, and I must admit that I was immediately interested in watching the movie given its title and its cover. Yeah, I am a sucker for cheesy horror movies, I know.
However, while "Cyst" from director Tyler Russell certainly was cheesy and watchable, it just was a mediocre movie foray. Sadly so, because "Cyst" definitely had the potential to be a lot more than what it turned out to be.
The storyline told in "Cyst" was following a pretty basic formula really, so this wasn't revolutionary to the horror genre. Sure, it was fun to watch the concept of a cyst growing big and becoming an animated monstrocity, but that was about all that there was to it really. How so? Well, because the storyline didn't really have much else to offer. So writers Tyler Russell and Andy Silverman didn't really impress much here.
Visually then "Cyst" was fun enough to watch. The effects were good enough and served their purposes well enough. This wasn't, however, not top of the line special effects that will blow you away or bedazzle you. So don't get your hopes up.
"Cyst" was a movie that came and went without much of a ruckus. And it just doesn't have enough contents to it to warrant more than just a single viewing. I will say that if you enjoy cheesy horror movies, then by all means "Cyst" is worth sitting down watching a single time, but just don't set yourself up for a grand over-the-top movie experience.
My rating of "Cyst" lands on a mediocre and bland five out of ten stars.

Has a very ok-ish to bad acting cast, but overall it was entertaining to watch. Cyst delivers massive amount of disgusting scenes and some disgusting characters.

This film was so disgusting in every way sure it was a bit fun in some parts and made me laugh a little but in general it was pretty boring for me the characters were also stupid, I would suggest it if you have nothing else to do though.

It has zero tension and zero atmosphere.
I fast forwarded some scenes.
Mayb such kinda movies ain't my cup of tea.
In fact revisiting the 50s n 60s monster movies are much better than this lousy one.

This movie is of course extremely bad and boring but I do like that the acting is so boring it reminiss of the b movies from the 80s plus the poster is nice.
I give it 5/10 which in my opinion means "worth a watch"

I started watching this fully expecting low-budget indie-horror. I like these movies; even if the production doesn't match up to the ambition, you can often still appreciate what they were aiming for.
I went into this film expecting a low-budget sci-fi body-horror, because that's what every official description had led me to belive this was. In actual fact, this is a gory comedy-horror.
And, when you view it in that light, it works well. It's ridiculous and over-the-top, and features more than its fair share of gore and pus.
It's just a shame that it's not promoted honestly. It would actually find its audience more easily if it was tagged as "comedy", but the creators have chosen not to do this.
It's a really enjoyable film, but because of how it is presented online, it may not be what you expect.

My rating for "Cyst" is probably too generous, and the praising words in the user-comment you are about to read are undoubtedly far too favorable. Please look elsewhere for a more objective review, because I have a giant weakness for genuine and authentic throwbacks to ancient B-movies. Nowadays, 50s Sci-Fi movies and 80s slashers are merely just being spoofed and ridiculed, while the pretentious directors have the nerves to call it meta-horror or homages. They are not! "Cyst" is a true homage. Writer/director Tyler Russell took the effort to come up with an actual plot (and a real good one, too), the gore and splatter effects are 200% handmade craftmanship, and some of the names in the cast are a dream come true for every fan of legendary bad cinema!
Set in 1961, the one and only George Hardy (a hero from "Troll 2) shines as Dr. Guy; - a medical authority for the removal of thick and icky bodily cysts chock-full of pus. His lifework is the Get-Gone; - a revolutionary medical device that vaporizes cysts via laser technology. There's only one minor problem, though... Dr. Guy can't get his machine patented because it always fails at critical times. For his last chance to persuade the medical committee, Dr. Guy saddles up his assistant with a gigantic cyst to give a proper demonstration, but the cyst develops into a monster and goes on a bloody rampage.
Everything about "Cyst" is exquisite! During its short & sweet running time (barely 70 minutes) there are great things happening. The gooey cyst-juice erupting out of human bodies, the giant tumor wiggling through the sinister hospital hallways, the old-school use of bright colors and extreme close-ups, ... It's simply delicious! Apart from George Hardy, there are also remarkable roles for Eva Habermann (who starred in a German sort of remake of "Troll 2"), Greg Sestero (known from Tommy Wiseau's "The Room") and Gene Jones (who even worked with Tarantino in "The Hateful Eight"). "Cyst" is a must-see for true fans of the horror genre, with a particularly big heart for low-budgeted but imaginative monstrosities.

Loved this. For a short running time of around 70 minutes it's a great fun flick before you go to bed. We get a mad scientist, bloody disgusting handmade effects, funny scenes and dialogues and a whole feeling of watching a trash movie from the 50ies. Eva Haberman is great as the lead nurse having a bad last working day. Prepare more to laugh instead of being shocked. I really appreciate what they did here.
Don't forget to stay after the credits roll - can't wait for "Cyst 2: The Revenge" if it will ever come ;) After the ending we even get some outtakes from the making of the movie. So don't switch of too early.

Oh man what a great little film, defiantly hits the nostalgia buttons
is genunily funny, the practical effects are good, the actors are good,
if you love cheesy 80's/90's horror comedys this is well worth a watch.

Terror strikes in a small American town in the early 60s when a mad scientist unleashes a giant cyst on himanity. Can nurse Patty save the world? Cyst is more of a comedy than a horror film. It is a very lovingly made hommage to 50s/60s b movies. It contains all typical elements of such films and combines the for comedic effect. It has lots of funny vignettes and allusions to classics. Inspite of the (deliberately) cheap monster, the film works surprisingly well. Executive Producer Eva Habermann gives a great performance as nurse who battles the monster. You get the general impression that the cast were having fun shooting this film.

Produced on a fairly low budget, with cheap special effects and featuring George Hardy of the infamous Troll 2, Cyst is a film that has the soul of those B movies that had their time of fame in the 50s and 60s. It is from those old monster movies where only props were used and were very enjoyable to watch. Here we are offered a 100% handmade creature with some gore to make the experience more grotesque. They managed to make something that honors that type of film with its short duration. It's only almost 70 minutes and the cyst doesn't appear until halfway through the movie, but the wait is worth it to see the bug doing its thing. It is not a horror film per se because it is quite oriented towards black humor. With a small cast of actors who overact a lot, the film is really entertaining and manages to generate laughter with its absurd humor. Cyst is ultimately a fun dark comedy film that deserves a place in the world of B movies. My final rating for this film is a 7/10.

You should know what to expect with a name like "Cyst". It doesn't disappoint! I appreciated the practical effects a lot. The actors seemed like they were having a great time! As soon as I heard the doctor speak, I said "that's the dad from Troll 2" and it was! It was all around a fun gory movie. Enjoy!

It's a good horror comedy actually. Some scenes just made me laugh, some parts were gross, but horror movies can't be about flowers and butterflies. Actually it's hard to create good horror comedies, but this one it is GOOD!!!

This is itchy! I am so itchy! I wish Ester didn't talk me into these polyester dresses. I enjoy wearing fine silks and furs for a reason.
However, the gold filigree pattern against the emerald green is stunning on me.
I think this cheap polyester has reacted poorly with my flawless skin. As I walk to the clinic Ester recommended, all I can feel is a New York Yankee sized baseball on my right inner thigh. It has been bothering me for weeks. Ester says it's probably from chaffing and she gets it too. What does that silly cow know? She's the one who never stays away from the lemon squares after Sunday Mass.
Every luncheon for weeks, Ester hasn't stopped yammering on about the doctor I am seeing at the clinc.
Some 'Dr. Guy'. Apparently he has been working on a machine that removes bumps painlessly with ease. I finally took her up on the advice and made an appointment.
Walking into the clinic, I notice a disheveled and nervous nurse 'Patty'. She ought to clean up, she looks unprofessional. As I wait in the waiting room I hear a males voice yell 'One last push!' and I wonder if I stepped into an Obstetricians office by accident.
I have waiting been quite awhile. It will be worth it though to see Dr. Guy. I trust Ester even if she is a daft cow.

CYST is exactly what you think it is, which is a movie about a killer cyst that runs amok in a 1950's doctors office.
Not to mention we get bad movie icons George Hardy and Greg Sestero!

So, I have avoided this movie since it was released. It looked trashy, cheap, low budget and very much a B movie.
I was hard up for something to watch today so I flicked it on as a background movie while I worked.
It IS a cheap, low budget, trashy B movie, but also it's funny, original, and well made.
It is a movie that knows its place and hams it up to the max. Absolutely loved it. Highly recommended. My favourite part was probably the office fight between the nurse and the doctor lol Watch after the credits too.
People giving this 2 and 3 stars or less do not appreciate the fun B movie approach. Perhaps they should go back to watching the dreadful hereditary type movies.

My what a glorious little comedy/horror piece. It deserves more praise. Idiots putting it down, need putting down. Reminded me a lot of re-animator... Good stuff indeed.

From the opening credit roll, an eagle eyed viewer can tell this film is already not taking itself to seriously (check the producer credit next to the (c) MMXX )... It pays homage to the likes of the blob, house on haunted hill, the thing without a face, and even re-animator with doses of from beyond... (though those came way later). Put all that in a blender, add the over the top gross out and ridiculous situational comedy that this story put our characters in and you get this wonderful gift of a film that looks and feels like a 60s film but has the detail and production value of a 2020. 8* as there are some flaws / story loopholes which I will leave for you to spot :3.

Its always a good start when I'm covering my eyes, gagging. I'm so glad I didn't put any cream in my coffee.
I'm left gushing, its the fun creature nonsense that I love. Mad Doctor, strong feisty nurse, a disgusting deadly creature, and a lot of blood, body parts & pus.
Lead me to your merchandise!

I was able to check out Tyler Russell's CYST during a recent screening in Alabama, and I must say that it had everything you would want in a horror/comedy!
Not to mention, you get Greg Sestero and George Hardy on the same screen!
This film was made not to be taken seriously, but made to be enjoyed by fans of cult films like Troll 2 and The ROOM, with a touch of Twilight Zone!
