Season 10 of Chicago Med introduced a few new faces to the show’s ever-changing cast including actor Darren Barnet, who has joined the show as pediatric resident Dr. John Frost.
Right out of the gate, fans fell in love with Med’s new addition who made his debut fighting to help get his young patient the care she needed as his hospital prepared to close down. In just one episode, Dr. Frost quickly won over the fans, though we’re not surprised at all given the character is played by actor Darren Barnet, who exudes charisma and brings a likability to every character he plays.
So it’s no surprise that Chicago Med fans have quickly been won over and are eager to check out Barnet’s past roles! While Chicago Med marks his first series regular role on a broadcast drama, Barnet is no stranger to the industry and...

James Gunn is filling out the Daily Planet newsroom.
Mikaela Hoover and Christopher McDonald have joined the cast of Gunn’s Superman, the inaugural movie of DC Studios.
The feature is currently in production in Atlanta with David Corenswet starring as Clark Kent/Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan playing Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane.
The duo will have company on the news desk. Earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Saturday Night Live alum Beck Bennett had joined the production to play Steve Lombard, a blowhard and self-serving reporter who in the comics serves as a foil to boy scout reporter Kent.
Sources tell THR that Hoover is playing Cat Grant, who in the comics was a gossip columnist who had her eyes set on Kent. The character, created by Marv Wolfman and Jerry Ordway, has appeared in several TV shows, most notably in CW’s Supergirl in which she was played by Calista Flockhart.

There is no shortage of progressive, original holiday programming on Netflix this year (you’re welcome). Case in point: Single All the Way, Netflix’s first original gay Christmas movie, stars Michael Urie as Peter, an unlucky-in-love Los Angeles single whose family back home in New Hampshire decides to play matchmaker. The film is actually kind of revelatory, bypassing predictable (read: tired) coming-out narratives and instead illuminating what it’s like to be queer in a supportive family. (Maybe even too supportive? Watch it before reading any further.)
In another new holiday flick, Love Hard, a dating and relationship columnist thinks she has finally met her match; he just happens to live 3,000 miles away. Hijinks ensue, but, most importantly, the movie remixes/flips traditional rom-com tropes by making catfishing seem like a good idea. Both films are a total joy — you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll definitely call your mom.

Halfway into The Out-Laws, I was wondering if I should get a drink and watch the rest after getting a little buzzed because that would have certainly made this experience more profound. Not that it is any less than when you watch it dead sober. But there is one condition. You need to have a penchant for bad movies, like me. That is the only way you would enjoy The Out-Laws. It is a very obvious bad movie, which fits right into the “so bad that it’s good” genre. This is a movie where a man mistakes another man’s genitals for a ripcord while sky-diving. The same man repeatedly gets his buttocks grabbed by his fiancé’s parents as if nothing happened. Then, during an all-important heist, this man uses a water gun instead of a real one. Yes, it is that kind of movie. With the freedom of R-rating,...

NBC is getting into business with Heather McMahan.
The comedian and podcast host (and recent Hollywood Reporter Next Big Thing subject) is developing a comedy for the network. She has sold a script for I Can’t Right Now, based loosely on her own life, and is attached to star as well.
Universal Television and Annapurna are producing the multicamera project. McMahan is set to star as Heather McDaniels, who is juggling a budding comedy career with her mom, sister and boyfriend pulling her in every which way.
In addition to writing and starring, McMahan will executive produce I Can’t Right Now with Jen Zaborowski, Dan Levy (The Goldbergs), and Annapurna’s Patrick Chu and Ali Krug.
McMahan hosts the podcast Absolutely Not and is currently on a stand-up tour dubbed The Comeback Tour (after 2021’s Farewell Tour). She also has a self-produced stand-up special (directed by Zaborowski) in the works.

Moving into her mom’s basement was the best thing that’s ever happened to Heather McMahan. The comedian, who can be described as an auditory David Sedaris for the millennial set — she hosts the Absolutely Not podcast, where she works out emotional kinks on topics like friend breakups and traumatic celery juice regimens — recently started her second stand-up tour in as many years (she’ll do nearly 50 stops at major theaters by June). She’s also working on a pilot for NBC and putting the finishing touches on an hourlong special she produced herself. And, if you ask her, all of this came precisely because she left town.
McMahan had been living in L.A. and New York but returned to her native Atlanta with her husband to keep her mother temporary company (or so she thought) during the pandemic and amid the still-painful loss of her father to cancer.

‘Tis the season for Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, and Netflix.
The two basic-cable channels and the streaming giant notoriously go in on made-for-tv holiday movies, and this yuletide time will be no exception. But just how crucial to their respective (and very different) businesses is this type of programming, this time of year?
For Hallmark Channel, as is the case for its namesake greeting-card business, December is truly a time to be merry. This year’s “Countdown to Christmas” will premiere 31 new holiday films on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Hallmark Channel’s primetime viewership in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 54 percent higher than in Q3, 62 percent higher than Q2, and 27 percent higher than Q1, according to Nielsen data. The first quarter comes closest to the last for a few reasons: 1) Christmas-movie catch-up viewing, and 2) Another programming stunt: “New Year New Movies!”

When Willis witnesses a real crime, he falls down a rabbit hole of the secret history of Chinatown and the buried legacy of his own family. Jimmy O. Yang, who is best known for his roles in films like Crazy Rich Asians and the television series Silicon Valley, is set to star. Yang’s other past credits include his role as Josh Lin in Netflix‘s Love Hard, and he starred in and wrote on the since-canceled Netflix series, Space Force. Inside the corny chaos of the going-back-home lark “Easter Sunday,” starring comedian Jo Koy, is the point that families are messy. Of course, one doesn’t need to belong to a big Filipino clan like the movie’s onscreen Valencias to grasp that, and it’s almost quaint how that message is articulated for us at the end as some fresh bit of wisdom when, since scene one, relatives in various states of bickering aggravation have been the comedy’s go-to note.
A more lasting takeaway from “Easter Sunday” about what’s messy has to do with vehicles for stand-ups trying to break into movies. Koy, who’s been packing arenas for years with his rabbity energy and humorous windows into family eccentricities and Filipino culture, seemed as natural a fit as any to get some of his act’s lasting characters into a movie. Steven Spielberg certainly thought so...

Conversely, if your Easter time has proved somewhat sucky, there is comfort here. Snuggle up, fire up the streamers, and bathe your brain in endorphins, with this collection which ranges from modern classics to nostalgic delights.
Bridesmaids (2011)
You might remember it for the pooing in the street bit, but that moment far from defines a movie that is a celebration of female friendship, where Kristen Wiig calls a teenage girl the c-word. Paul Feig’s love letter to ladies is packed with a killer cast, it’s got songs, puppies, chocolate, booze, dresses, and everything else we females adore.

A total of 28 of the most popular films of 2021 met the criteria to receive the ReFrame Stamp, the designation that confirms a movie production crew is gender-balanced. That is off one pic from last year’s 29 films, the most ever.

In a movie-centric week, Netflix’s Red Notice outdid two earlier 2021 releases that have just surfaced on Disney+, Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings and Jungle Cruise.
Red Notice, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, drew more than 1.8 billion minutes of streaming for the week of November 8 to 14. That was far more than the nearly 1.1 billion for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and 908 million for Jungle Cruise, which also stars Johnson.
The latter two films had been released earlier in the year — Shang-Chi in September in theaters and Jungle Cruise in both theaters and as a Premier Access streaming title. Premier Access releases cost $30 on top of a Disney+ subscription during a limited window. The company established the release pattern in 2020 with Mulan, when theaters were closed in many parts of the world due to Covid. ‘The Harder They Fall’ Tops Nielsen U.S. Streaming Chart As Netflix Has Strong Overall Movie Showing
Netflix had a good week at the virtual box office from November 1 to 7, taking the overall streaming crown with marquee feature film The Harder They Fall.
Nielsen said the film racked up almost 1.2 billion minutes of streaming views. That was well ahead of any other series or film, as two-time champ You faded to the No. 2 spot at 994 million minutes of viewing and other shows also lost steam.
Two other original films performed well for Netflix. Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder’s zombie action outing Army of the Dead, collected 456 million viewing minutes. Love Hard, a dating comedy starring Nina Dobrev, scooped up 455 million. Along with Harder, they helped Netflix take the top three spots on Nielsen’s movie-centric chart.
Nielsen measures only viewing via a TV set, leaving aside mobile, delivering numbers from Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video after a month’s delay.

In Netflix’s second week of its top 10 most watched film charts (English), the streamer reports that Red Notice was the No. 1 movie for Nov. 15-21 logging 129.1M hours watched. “Red Notice,” the art-heist thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, is set to become Netflix’s most-watched movie in its first 28 days of release.
The film broke into Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular English Films of all time this past week, registering 277.9 million hours viewed since its Nov. 12 release — and it has hit the No. 2 spot in just 10 days. That puts it on pace to surpass the current No. 1 holder, Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” which scared up 282 million hours viewed in its first 28 days. In addition, for the second week in a row, “Red Notice” cracked Netflix’s Top 10 in all 94 countries.
Evidently boosted by the popularity of “Red Notice,” Johnson-starrer “Central Intelligence” (14.91 million hours viewed) and Reynolds’ “6 Underground” (7.77 million hours) both broke into the Top 10 English films for the week of Nov. 15-21.

“Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (Sony/$19.99) hits home platforms this week after its eighth weekend exclusively in theaters. It will very likely lead charts in upcoming weeks, with, among top titles still to come, Marvel’s “The Eternals” not announced and not likely to be available for home viewing before Christmas.
Meanwhile, two other top fall releases, both at $19.99, share the top position at the moment. “No Time to Die” (United Artists) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (Disney) both took #1 spots among the three charts below. Both were made available last week, with initially the Bond title atop across the board.
That makes sense for “No Time to Die,” especially because of its early (31-day) PVOD release and older, still theater-averse audience. But the strong showing of “Shang-Chi” stands out as a sign of strange times where decision makers look for guidance of what strategies to pursue.

Measurement replaces previous system reporting who watched at least two minutes of content in first 28 days.
Netflix has launched top 10 lists reporting its most popular films and shows around the world based on its new metric measuring hours viewed.
Starting today (November 16) the metric on Top10.netflix replaces the streamer’s previous measurement which recorded the number of accounts that watched at least two minutes of a piece of content in its first 28 days on the platform.
That system was frequently criticised for failing to reveal a meaningful picture of viewership, cherry picking highlights and not reporting who watched shows in their entirety.

Exhibitors who still believe that studios might settle on a 45-day minimum on theatrical exclusivity saw their hopes crushed by “No Time to Die.” A month after its release, United Artists debuted the title on Premium VOD at $19.99. The timing parallels Universal’s 31-day strategy for films that open over $50 million.
As anticipated, the latest James Bond immediately placed #1 on multiple charts, both those ranking by transactions and revenue (Vudu). The film remained at #4 in theaters over the weekend, with a 23 percent drop the second lowest among top 10 films. Once again, the home-viewing marketing push also appeared to benefit ticket sales.
Disney is #2 and #3 across the board, as represented by “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” ($19.99) and “Free Guy” ($5.99), respectively. Four other Disney titles, led by “Jungle Cruise” ($12.99) and “Black Widow” ($5.99), took 10 of the 30 positions on the charts. More impressive is that all but “Free Guy” now stream free for Disney + subscribers.
