Directed by David Ren
Featuring Jason Yee, Samantha Streets, Ron Yuen, Sasha Grey and Dominique Swain
What happens when you clone a clone?
I used to think it would be some kind Brundlefly would spring forth and leave an indelible stamp on my psyche but then again, I hadn’t seen The Girl from the Naked Eye yet. A clone of a clone, apparently, limps around for a bit, tries to shock you then eventually. David Ren’s martial arts/film noir film follows Jake (Jason Yee, who also co-wrote) a man working for a pimp to pay off his gambling debts which is just as dull as it sounds. Jake befriends one of the prostitutes, Sandy, and seeks to avenge her death after she’s murdered. Shot and written in the style of Sin City with the fighting of a Hong Kong action film, it’s a truly odd combination that accomplishes neither objective.

The Girl From the Naked Eye (2012) Former martial arts competitor turned action star Jason Yee beats the shit out of a lot of people, shoots a few dozen more, and generally makes a menace of himself in director David Ren’s “The Girl from the Naked Eye”, a moderately budgeted action movie dressed up as a noir Detective story. The hero is one Jake, a driver for an escort service who falls (and vice versa) for his latest charge, the sweet Sandy (Samantha Streets). After Sandy is murdered, Jake makes it his mission to find her killer (or killers). This pits him against his buddy Simon (Ron Yuan, who also doubles as the film’s fight choreographer) and Simon’s slimy cop partner Frank (former Brit middleweight Gary Stretch, though disappointingly he never throws down). After a slow first 20 minutes, “The Girl from the Naked Eye” picks up noticeably, offering...

Title: The Girl From the Naked Eye Director: David Ren Starring: Jason Yee, Ron Yuan, Samantha Streets, Sasha Grey, Dominique Swain, Gary Stretch A pulpy, low-budget slice of film noir cross-pollinated with a martial arts flick, the curiously titled “The Girl From the Naked Eye” will certainly win no awards for great originality, but nonetheless serves as a stylish and engaging little vehicle for the surly charms of star Jason Yee, as well as its filmmaking team. The sophomore effort of director David Ren (“Shanghai Kiss”), the movie is a case of style over substance, to be sure, but boy is that style impressive on what must have been a shoestring budget. In the early days of noir filmmaking, even when a book was the source of the story, the films were made with a genuine sense of danger. Noir was still a new genre, and we didn’t exactly quite know the rules yet. That led to filmmakers essentially writing, shooting and performing what they knew, from the dangerous bar down the street, to the dame with whom they shouldn’t have trifled, to the backroom brawls that had the stench of sweat, desperation, and bourbon. It’s a cliché to point out that yesterday’s filmmakers actually lived life, but it’s true -- the internet hadn’t yet been invented.
It’s a broad and blind accusation to suggest that director David Ren, the man behind “The Girl From The Naked Eye,” hasn’t lived this sort of life. However, it’s clear from this modern pulp pastiche that...

Fans of the action films are often attracted to the genre for the extensive number of fights and stunts included in the narrative. But the new action romance thriller ‘The Girl from the Naked Eye’ takes a risky, but unique, chance by mixing a love story between the main characters with a stimulating vengeance tale after they’re separated by murder. ‘The Girl from the Naked Eye,’ which was directed by David Ren, follows Jake (played by Jason Yee), an ex-gambler who is trying to pay off a debt by working as a driver for The Naked Eye. The private gentleman’s club fronts for a prostitution ring, and Jake is stuck [ Read More ]...

And "Madagascar 3" with the upset! Last week, while everyone's chips were on Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," the animated sequel took out the rest of the competition with $60 million in ticket sales. Will kids flick make it two weekends in a row? Who knows. From"Men In Black" to "Snow White and The Huntsman," the box office has been quite fickle-hearted as of late. Now, with the release of the big-screen adaptation of "Rock of Ages," Noah Baumbach's family film may be the next one-and-done victim. (Although, don't count out Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg's comedy, "That's My Boy," as the surprise underdog.) Let's take a look at the all predictions and reviews in Moviefone's Weekend Movie Preview. Nationwide Releases "Rock of Ages" What's the story? Starring a bevy of stars -- Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Julianne Hough, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Alec Baldwin and Paul Giamatti -- the broadway...

Actor/writer Jason Yee shares a fight scene from "The Girl From the Naked Eye," one that pays tribute to one of his favorite scenes in "Old Boy." The film stars Yee as a man hell bent on finding the killer of a high-class escort he was entrusted to care for. Yee, a martial arts expert, did all of his own stunts and helped choreograph the fight scenes. "The Girl From the Naked Eye" opens at select AMC theaters this Friday, June 15. __________________________________ When I first saw the hallway fight scene in the Korean film, "Old Boy," I was intrigued by the simplicity of the single master shot and the fight choreography. But what really struck me was the raw emotion that came out in that scene. We wanted to do a scene like that, but with complicated fight choreography that can only be done by highly trained professionals -- yet...

Some people will do whatever it takes to avenge the wrongs that have been committed against their loved ones, even if it means putting their own life in danger. Director David Ren’s 2012 actioner “The Girl from the Naked Eye” is being billed as a film noir martial arts flick, though you won’t find much evidence of either in the latest promotional clip that’s currently making the rounds. All you get is a conversation taken completely out of context and a little bit of gunplay — that’s about it. Why release a promotional clip that doesn’t properly promote what your product is attempting to sell? If I didn’t already think this film had promise, I doubt I’d give it a second thought. Boggles the mind, it does. Enough bellyaching. Have a look at this synopsis/press release: When a high-class escort is murdered, her protector, Jake (Yee) stops at nothing to find her killer. Leaving a bloody trail in his path, Jake risks everything to uncover the truth and avenge the death of the woman he loved.

In the market for yet another stylish direct-to-video actioner than attempts to blend suspense, intrigue, naked women, and all sorts of martial arts-related mayhem? Then keep your eyes peeled for director David Ren’s romantic thriller “The Girl from the Naked Eye”, which is scheduled to arrive on DVD this July courtesy of First Look Pictures. And in case you were wondering, the film also features a performance prolific porn star-turned-prolific actress Sasha Grey. I’m sure that alone will garner the film plenty of attention. Before checking out the trailer, read this synopsis: Jake, an ex-gambler trying to pay off a debt, finds work as a driver for The Naked Eye. The Naked Eye is a private gentleman’s club that fronts for a prostitution ring. Jake tires of chauffeuring around call girls and roughing up deviants that don’t pay. Jake is stuck in this sad existence until he meets Sandy,...
