Exclusive: West Duchovny (Painkiller) and Scott Eastwood (Fast X) are in production in Austin, TX on Pearl, an indie drama written and directed by Marcos Efron (And Soon the Darkness), which will also star the Babylon duo of Lukas Haas and Ethan Suplee, along with Vincent Laresca (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood).

Inspired by pictures like Five Easy Pieces, The Sugarland Express, and Hell or High Water, the film follows a young musician, Pearl (Duchovny), who is stuck in an abusive relationship until she meets Eli (Eastwood), a bank robber on the run, who links up with her as he looks to evade law enforcement in rural Texas. Details as to the roles of the other actors are under wraps.

Producers include Chuck Pacheco of Lbi Entertainment, Lavinia Postolache, Vince Maggio, and Eastwood. Loren Albento is serving as executive producer.

Exclusive: Shout! Studios has acquired North American rights to the sci-fi dramedy Linoleum from Sub_Sequential Pictures, following a competitive bidding situation. The multi-platform entertainment distribution and production arm of Shout! Factory is planning a strategic launch of the movie across all major entertainment platforms, beginning with a theatrical launch later this year. Pic will be presented at the Cannes Film Market by Blue Fox Entertainment.

The film from writer-director Colin West (Double Walker) follows Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan), the host of a failing children’s science TV show called Above & Beyond, who has always had aspirations of being an astronaut. Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, and Jack Dylan Grazer have joined the cast for the upcoming feature at Sony Pictures, ‘Downtown Owl.’

Lily Rabe, Ed Harris, and August Blanco Rosenstein have also joined the film adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s story.

Set somewhere in rural North Dakota in 1983 is the fictional town called Owl where you won’t find cable or pop culture, but you will find downtown with a first-rate Chevrolet dealership, three bars and a new high school English teacher whose presence upends the lives of locals just in time for a white-out blizzard for the ages.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has set an all-star cast for its adaptation of Chuck Klosterman’s Downtown Owl with Lily Rabe, Academy Award nominee Ed Harris , Vanessa Hudgens, Finn Wittrock, Jack Dylan Grazer and August Blanco Rosenstein. Rabe will also be directing the pic with long-time collaborator Hamish Linklater, joining her as co-director. Linklater, who most recently starred in Midnight Mass, also adapted the screenplay. T Bone Burnett is doing the music.

The film was part of the Sundance Institute Creative Producing Summit and Talent Forum and will be produced by Bettina Barrow and Rabe of Kill Claudio Productions, Rebecca Green and Linklater. Laura Rister is exec producing as well as Lee Broda. Tom McLeod is co-executive producer. The pic is currently in production in Minnesota.

Three Point Capital is financing the pic. Initial artist support funding provided by Esme Grace Media.

Exclusive: Kyle Stroud and Frank Ponce of production and finance outfit Carte Blanche, which has credits including Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter, are partnering with Joey Tuccio and Dorian Connelley’s Roadmap Writers to launch a genre screenwriting competition.

Carte Blanche will greenlight and finance at least one feature that comes through the initiative at a budget of sub-1M, though this figure could be increased depending on the elements involved such as cast.

Scripts should have no more than five characters and five locations, and will focus on a contained, character-driven story. Projects including Timecrimes, Buried, and Monsters are all cited as comps, the producers said.

The competition’s jury will consist of producer Liz Cardenas of A24’s A Ghost Story, Carolina Groppa, who is in charge of production at Issa Rae’s ColorCreative, Giselle Johnson of Sony/Screen Gems (Don’t Breathe), and Pixar alumni Colin Levy.

West Duchovny has signed on to star in the upcoming Hulu drama series “Saint X,” Variety has learned.

Duchovny joins previously announced cast members Victoria Pedretti and Josh Bonzie in the show, which is based on the Alexis Schaitkin novel of the same name. It is described as a psychological drama, which is told via multiple timelines and perspectives. It’s a show about how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Duchovny will play Alison, described as a smart and charismatic young woman who is beginning to look at her own privilege through a critical lens as she vacations with her family at a beautiful island resort.

Exclusive: Producer-director Trudie Styler is set to wrap this month on under-the-radar documentary E Poi C’è Napoli (And Then There Is Naples), a film about the vibrant Italian city and its sharp contrasts.

Styler will direct the Italian feature, marking her third film as a director, and has amassed an impressive team of Italian collaborators.

Cinematographer is two-time Oscar-nominated DoP and industry veteran Dante Spinotti, whose credits include Heat, The Last Of The Mohicans, L.A. Confidential, The Insider and Ant-Man And The Wasp.

Editor will be Walter Fasano, known for his collaborations with Luca Guadagnino, including on Call Me By Your Name, I Am Love and Suspiria.

Producers include Italian companies Big Sur, Mad Entertainment and state broadcaster Rai Cinema. Producing are Luciano Stella and Maria Carolina Terzi.

Popular Italian rapper Clementino is writing a song for the film, which will also feature classic Neapolitan songs, and “a few surprises.

Exclusive: Actor and musician Eliot Sumner (No Time to Die) has been tapped for a recurring role opposite Andrew Scott and Johnny Flynn in Ripley, Showtime’s drama series based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling quintet of Tom Ripley novels, from The Night Of’s Steven Zaillian.

The series follows Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, who is hired by a wealthy man to try to convince his vagabond son, Dickie Greenleaf (Flynn), who is living a comfortable, trust-funded ex-pat life in Italy, to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. Dakota Fanning also stars as Marge Sherwood, an American living in Italy who suspects darker motives underlie Tom’s affability.

Sumner will play a friend of Dickie’s who becomes suspicious of Tom.

Zaillian will write and direct the entire first season of Ripley.

Depression isn’t rational, and the strongest aspect of “A Mouthful of Air” is its refusal to propose a one-to-one explanation for the cause of the common, and debilitating, condition. Writer/director Amy Koppelman’s adaptation of her 2003 novel of the same name charts the plight of new mom Julie (Amanda Seyfried), who unsuccessfully attempts to take her own life shortly before her child’s first birthday, and then strives to cope with negative thoughts and feelings she can’t shake. , and the latter will likely make it a tough sell when it debuts in theaters on Oct. 29.

Alternating between delicacy and preciousness, “A Mouthful of Air” begins with children’s novelist Julie caring for her infant son Teddy in the Manhattan apartment she shares with her husband Ethan (Finn Wittrock). Few things are harder to depict — or more urgent to recognize — than postpartum depression, so while Amy Koppelman’s “A Mouthful of Air” might be a low-budget drama shot with the simplicity of a first-time filmmaker who’s just trying not to trip over her own story, the degree of difficulty here is still off the charts. It’s a good thing, then, that Koppelman knows that story inside and out: Not only as someone who previously suffered from postpartum depression herself, but also as the author of the 2003 novel on which this movie is based.

Her intimate understanding of the shame and uncertainty born from such an inexplicable mood disorder (as well as the false promise of personal strength as a defense against depression) turns out to be the saving grace of . Sony Pictures announced a slew of release dates late Thursday, including its Whitney Houston and George Foreman biopics, children’s book adaptation Harold and the Purple Crayon and its acquired title A Mouthful of Air. The studio also moved back the opening of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile by four months.

I Wanna Dance with Somebody, TriStar’s story about pop legend and part-time movie star Houston, gets a December 23, 2022, opening slot. Naomi Ackie stars as the iconic singer with Kasi Lemmons is directing.

The Untitled George Foreman Biopic from Affirm Films, which tells the story of the former boxer’s rise from Olympic gold medalist to fighting Muhammad Ali and eventually becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in history, is set for September 16, 2022. Sony Pictures announced Thursday it has blocked out an awards-friendly spot on Dec. 23, 2022 for the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” starring Naomi Ackie.

Coming up first on Oct. 29 is the novel adaptation “A Mouthful of Air,” starring Amanda Seyfried, Finn Wittrock, Amy Irving and Paul Giamatti. Amy Koppelman wrote and directed “A Mouthful of Air,” about a children’s book author haunted by a dark secret. It’s produced by Mike Harrop, Koppelman, Amanda Seyfried, Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler.

Other dates announced include a Sept. 16, 2022 spot for the untitled George Foreman biopic directed by George Tillman, Jr. and stars Khris Davis and Sullivan Jones. Exclusive: Michael Gaston (The Leftovers) has been cast alongside Vera Farmiga, Cherry Jones, Adepero Oduye, Julie Ann Emery, Cornelius Smith Jr. and Molly Hager in Five Days at Memorial, Apple TV+’s limited series from John Ridley, Carlton Cuse and ABC Signature.

Written by Ridley and Cuse based on the acclaimed nonfiction book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheri Fink, Five Days at Memorial chronicles the first five days in a New Orleans hospital after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. When the floodwaters rose, the power failed and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions that haunted them for years to come.

Gaston will play Arthur “Butch” Schafer, an assistant attorney general with the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) has been tapped to star as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in HBO Max’s upcoming series based on the DC characters, from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith, Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner (Wittrock) and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.

Wittrock’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern is a hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism. And yet, Guy is somehow likable.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star and executive produce HBO Films’ The Days of Abandonment, based on Elena Ferrante’s best-selling novel. The film, which is currently in pre-production, hails from writer-director Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Portman and her MountainA Films, Maven Screen Media, Len Amato’s Crash & Salvage and Fandango. Ferrante also serves as an executive producer.

Written and directed by Betts, The Days of Abandonment revolves around Tess, played by Portman. When Tess, a woman who abandoned her own dreams for a stable home life, is in turn abandoned by her husband, her world is thrown off its axis. Oscar nominee Amanda Seyfried is set to star as Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu’s The Dropout. She replaces Kate McKinnon who in February exited the limited drama series based on ABC News/ABC Radio’s podcast about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and her company, Theranos.

Amanda Seyfried will be honored at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival with the 2021 Montecito Award, which recognizes an actor’s career achievements and is named for one of the beautiful and stylish areas in Santa Barbara.

Seyfried was recently nominated for a Golden Globe and a Critic’s Choice Award for her work in “Mank,” and she joins honorees at this year’s festival including Sacha Baron Cohen, Zendaya, Riz Ahmed, Vanessa Kirby, Maria Bakalova and more.

“Amanda gives one of the best performances of 2020 in ‘Mank’ and makes us do a double take about her whole career. This is a defining moment for her, and a rediscovery for us.” Sbiff’s executive director Roger Durling said in a statement.
