European production-distribution giant Studiocanal is teaming with Spain’s Mr. Fields and Friends and Bambú, both led by producer Ramón Campos, on dramatic comedy “Rondallas,” written-directed by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo.
Sánchez Arévalo, one of Spain’s foremost crossover filmmakers, is coming back with “Rondallas” to a movie project oriented to classic cinema theater exhibition and distribution, after creating and directing a feature film and a TV series for Netflix.
Studiocanal will handle worldwide sales on “Rondallas,” scheduled to roll from March in Galicia, Northern Spain, with a still undisclosed cast.
“Rondallas” is produced by Campos, creator and executive producer of flagship Spanish TV dramas such as “Gran Hotel,” “Velvet,” “Cable Girls” and “Fariña,” all set up at his Madrid-based Bambú, one of the most game-changing of TV production companies in Spain, and partially owned by Studiocanal.

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks has nabbed worldwide rights to Spanish filmmaker Chiqui Carabante’s black-comedy whodunnit “The Fortress” (“La Fortaleza”) and is debuting its trailer ahead of the Cannes Film Market.
The film centers on the death of Arturo Viaplana and its aftermath as his offspring, hoping to inherit a great fortune, discover that instead of leaving them the estate, their father has devised a macabre, posthumous game in which his children must first locate his body and bury it themselves in a specified location. Working together to carry out their father’s instructions and pass a series of tests, the siblings are forced to come to terms with a deeply hidden family secret.
“The Fortress” is “the story of an inheritance” about a “game orchestrated by the deceased. The last one he performs with his children,” added Carabante, whose credits include “12+1, una comedia metafísica.”

Canal Plus Group-owned Studiocanal and Spain’s Bambu Producciones, producer of “Cable Girls” and “Velvet,” have teamed for “13 Exorcisms,” which looks to be one of Spain’s biggest genre movies in 2022.
Studiocanal is launching worldwide sales on the horror movie at Toronto.
New Spain-based distributor Beta Fiction will release “13 Exorcisms” theatrically in Spain Nov. 4.
Set in 2015 and starring María Romanillos (“Riot Police”), the title is the feature debut of Jacobo Martínez, who worked with Bambú on Netflix series “Jaguar.” It turns on Laura who, shy and highly sensitive, struggles to fit in at school. On Halloween, she takes part in a seance. From that day on, she is assailed by dark presences, horrifying visions, ominous voices and painful marks on her skin. The Jimenez family have sold all their belongings, packing what is pretty much one bag per member, and moved to Madrid to start a better life. Having landed an apartment for a great deal the family settles down and the parents start new jobs. Daughter Amparo looks after her little brother Rafael and their abuelo Fermin while her parents work. Her brother Pepe should be out looking for work as well. You know what they say about something that is too good to be true? Mysterious goings on begin to happen and take a real sinister turn when whatever is haunting this family sets itself on a specific target. We went into the screening of Malasaña 32 (we will use the Spanish title in this...

32 Malasana Street is a fantastic film to include on your October programming slate. Bravo, Nightstream! And bravo, Shudder, who will be releasing this film on their streaming platform on October 22nd. A fun haunted house story with plenty of scares, it’s perfect Halloween viewing.
Directed by Albert Pintó and set in the 1970s, the story follows the Olmedo family. They have sold off everything they own in their small town to come to Madrid for a new start. Despite their world having been entirely upended and finding themselves in a strange place, they are still excited for the change and are hopeful that this new chapter will bring them the prosperity and security they have always dreamt of.
They find a beautiful apartment, fully furnished and at a low price. Yes, it seems way too good to be true and like a potential recipe for sleepless nights, but they are optimistic nonetheless.

Last month we shared the hopeful news that our friends at MotelX, the kick-ass genre film festival in Lisbon, Portugal, were prepping a live edition of their next festival. With some changes to their format and an extra couple days tacked on to maximize safety protocols they're ready to go in a couple weeks. So it's time to announce their full lineup of films! Spanish horror flick Malasaña 32 and Dave Franco's indie horror The Rental will open and close the festival respectively. Cristian Jesús Ponce’s History of the Occult from Argentina is a film that I am very interested in seeing since hearing about it last year and seeing an unreleased trailer not too long ago. That looks to be having its...

Exclusive: Some international box office markets that are up and running — even if not at full steam — saw increases this weekend while others faced drops given good weather in some spots and an overall lack of new product. However, Disney floated Kristen Stewart-starrer Underwater into Korea for the first time with a No. 1 start at $402K which is one of the better overseas openings for the underperformer that began rolling out globally in January. Disney/Pixar’s Onward also continued to lead Taiwan in its second week.
Local titles in Germany and Czech Republic were still atop the charts and the former continues to see strong drive-in business. Overall, however, there’s evidence that new releases — scant though they may be — are the ones drawing the most attention from moviegoers. (See market snapshots below.)

Despite dramatic times, there is room for some encouragement in recent moves by the Spanish film industry. Basque global hit “The Platform” proved the most-watched movie on Netflix in the U.S. The Mediapro Studio is upping film production with high-profile projects such as the Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas drama “Official Competition.” Meanwhile, Mr. Fields and Friends, headed by Bambú founders Ramón Campos and Teresa Fernández-Valdés, debuted with “Malasaña 32,” as well as plans to produce three to five movies every two years. Powerhouse Morena Films is in production with “Historias lamentables,” a drama from the team behind Spanish box office smash “Champions.”

San Sebastian — Warner Bros. Pictures Intl. has grabbed near-worldwide distribution rights to “El verano que vivimos,” a romantic melodrama directed by “Fariña” Carlos Sedes and co-produced with Atresmedia Cine, Bambú Producciones and La Claqueta.
