By any measure, this was a flat-out no-good, very bad, horrible box-office weekend. This weekend’s #1 film “The Invitation” (Sony), grossed just 7 million. On the same weekend in 2019, it would have placed #7. Even a year ago, when theaters were considered to be still in recovery mode, it would have been #3. In 2021 the #1 film was “Candyman” — a horror film like “The Invitation,” but it opened to 22 million.
It’s easy to blame studios for not releasing more movies to fill the void, but the reality isn’t that simple. Covid upended production schedules, an increased reliance on special effects led to a massive production backlog, and the capacity for theaters to deliver grosses commensurate with 2019 or earlier isn’t there. When major releases demand a minimum of 30 million in marketing, studios lose incentive for theatrical releases.

Once again CineSavant becomes intrigued by a minor genre opus normally dismissed in a sentence or two; this Roger Corman production may fall short of his other early efforts because it tried to be too cerebral and then ran afoul of the Hollywood Guilds. David Kramarsky is listed as director but it’s hard to know how many of the credits are accurate — or simply bogus. Monstermaker extraordinaire Paul Blaisdell apparently came to the rescue with 11th-hour special effects to give the ambiguous, invisible alien menace more substance. Scorpion’s release has a new transfer and a commentary by Tim Lucas.

The studio has today announced that the two movies, whose titles and plots are currently unknown, will drop on February 26th, 2021 and February 17th, 2023, respectively. Both will be written and directed by Shyamalan.
To commemorate the announcement of their continued partnership with the director, Universal president Peter Cramer said the following:
“M. Night Shyamalan continues to create exciting, highly original stories that keep global audiences on the edge of their seats. Pop quiz: A science fiction landmark; a beloved classic rescued from obscurity by public television; two screwball comedies directed by the same Hollywood master 15 years apart; an almost ethereally beautiful western; an apocalyptic sociopolitical parable; a disemboweled silent epic; two gorgeous and epically scaled tales both taking place where politics, social upheaval and romance converge; a nearly unparalleled humanist drama; a hugely influential surrealist fantasy/romance; and two of the greatest horror films ever made– What do all of these films share in common?

Men wanted to be him, women loved him and he is one of the actors that comes to mind as one we lost much too soon.
Patrick Wayne Swayze was born on August 18, 1952, in Houston, the second of five children. His mother owned a dance studio, and Swayze became an accomplished dancer, although he was bullied in school for his training in classical ballet. As a teen, he honed several skills besides dance, including ice skating, acting in school plays, martial arts and football. His hopes for a football scholarship were dashed when he injured his knee.

Disney+ is developing a TV series based on “The Sandlot,” Variety has learned.
David Mickey Evans, the co-writer and director of the 1993 film, is attached to write and executive produce the series. It is said to take in 1984 and would focus on the children of the original characters.
The first “Sandlot” film took place in the summer of 1962 and followed a group of friends who spent their days playing baseball while also dealing with a menacing dog that lived next to the titular sandlot that they referred to as The Beast. The film starred Tom Guiry, Mike Vitar, Karen Allen, Denis Leary, James Earl Jones, Patrick Renna, Chauncey Leopardi, Marty York, Brandon Quintin Adams, Grant Gelt, Shane Obedzinski, and Victor Dimattia. It grossed just over $33 million at the box office and has gone on to become a cult classic. Two direct-to-video sequels were produced in 2005 and 2007.

His origin story begins modestly…The camera dwells on an unassuming man, white, balding, his head resting against the window of a speeding train as the world blurs by. When an alluring woman catches his attention, this man, indolent and unamazing, slyly tugs from his finger the wedding ring, that golden noose. He makes small talk, the laconic banter of the lonely. It’s almost painful to watch. The listless flirtations of this poor mundane man are captured in one long, unobstreperous take. There’s a patience to the scene, an unembellished sense of banality to this brief, unimportant moment in the lives of two strangers. Cut to the hospital, another wide, patient shot, the lumpy shape of something—a body?—blurry in the foreground. This unamazing man, David Dunn (Bruce Willis), sitting stoically on a gurney, is told by a befuddled doctor that he is the lone survivor of a catastrophic train wreck,...

Director M. Night Shyamalan has finally finished his Eastrail 177 Trilogy - which consists of Unbreakable, Split, and, now, Glass - wrapping up the stories of superhumans David Dunn (Bruce Willis), Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), and Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy). The latter suffers from dissociative identity disorder, with 24 individual personalities living within his psyche, making McAvoy's performance nothing short of astounding.
While sitting down with Fandango, the director explained how one of Kevin's many personalities, a Southern man identified as "Luke," is actually a nod to the film's real-life editor, Luke Ciarrocchi. Apparently Ciarrocchi has a notorious habit of spoiling the ends of films for his friends, which is why Shyamalan has McAvoy-as-Luke say in Glass, "Everybody knows the priest dies at the end of The Exorcist."

The fundamental problem with anticipation is that what we see as an active engagement with something is actually just the uncontrollable force of our own desires filling a vacuum. When we say that we are looking forward to receiving or experiencing something—a gift, a date, a new piece of art—what we perceive to be a vote of confidence and support is actually just a selfish hunger based off what we believe we will receive. We anticipate a present because we suppose that when we unwrap it the gift will be something we want. We anticipate the date for the promise of a fulfilling romantic encounter. We anticipate art because we hope to receive from it the same things we received from the artist’s previous works. Looking forward to something is a judgment on what came before, and is more of a curse to the promised “next” than...

M. Night Shymalan’s “Glass,” starring Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis, earned $3.7 million in Thursday night previews on 3,200 screens. It will open on 3,841 North American locations over the four-day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend.
The follow-up to Shymalan’s “Split” is being released by Universal and is projected to make as much as $64 million over the four-day weekend, with the studio projecting a more conservative $50 million.
That would still put it ahead of the opening for “Split,” which surprised audiences during the same weekend in 2017. That film earned $2 million from its Thursday previews and opened to $40 million before grossing $278 million worldwide, all on a $9 million budget.

After just returning home from the theater and sitting with our thoughts we can’t help but feel a bit robbed after much anticipation for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film “Glass”. The film gets off to a strong start as we are re-introduced to fan-favorite characters from both 2000’s “Unbreakable” and 2016’s “Split”, but later the film takes a turn that leaves us both baffled and bewildered. Overall, it just runs out of steam.
From “Unbreakable”, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from “Split” is James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within. Following the ending of “Split”, “Glass” finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman personality of The Beast in a series of dangerous encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator...

David Dunn: You killed all those people…
Elijah Price: But I found you. So many sacrifices, just to find you.

Elijah Price: Now that we know who you are, I know who I am. I’m not a mistake! It all makes sense! In a comic, you know how you can tell who the arch-villain’s going to be? What a difference a couple decades makes. When M. Night Shyamalan dropped Unbreakable on an unsuspecting world back in 2000, the new Spielberg on the block was told that superhero movies were still a post-Burton/Batman novelty. As the man himself recently admitted, his what-if project about an everyman who discovers he may be a closet Superman was never to be referred to as a “comic-book movie” if he wanted to get it made. Just call it another psychological thriller. Or maybe sell it as a Bruce Willis star vehicle costarring Samuel L. Jackson.

Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (Glow) founder David McLane is bringing back his other league, Women of Wrestling (Wow), to TV on Friday. And when it returns, his promotion won’t have the “demeaning” branding of female pro wrestlers that he sees elsewhere.
“They’re branded as ‘Superheroes,'” McLane told TheWrap, explaining his family-friendly, character-driven approach to marketing his athletes. “You know, you’ve got another wrestling league that brands them as ‘Knockouts.’ You have another wrestling league that’s branded women for I don’t know how many years as ‘Divas.’ I think it’s demeaning, both words are demeaning.”
McLane’s “Superheroes” include The Beast, The All Natural, Eye Candy, The Governor’s Daughter, Fire, and Jungle Grrrl, among others.

Not many filmmakers are, in and of themselves, a brand name. To be certain, M. Night Shyamalan is one. You have a certain expectation when you go into one of his movies. Sometimes, he meets them, while at others, he falls well below them. Two years ago, Split was heralded as a return to form for him, while also connecting to one of Shyamalan’s most well regarded previous works, Unbreakable. Well, hitting theaters this week is Glass, the follow up that brings together both of those flicks. Unfortunately, it’s a total letdown and a mess. This is hardly on par with Unbreakable. Sadly, it’s closer to Lady in the Water than anything else, and that’s not a compliment. The film is a follow up to Split, also functioning as a long in the making sequel to Unbreakable. At the outset, David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is on...

You know what the scariest thing is? To not know your place in this world. To not know why you’re here. That’s just an awful feeling… and a sentiment shared by Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) at both the ending of Unbreakable and Glass. The first time he said those words 19 years ago, he was trying to explain to David Dunn (Bruce Willis) why he felt the need to seek out a real-life superhero who unknowingly walked among us. When he says them in 2019, it is after he has sliced open the throat of a chatty orderly, one acting like he meant Elijah well while nevertheless denying him his gifts.

I’ve got a new featurette for M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming film Glass for you to watch today. It gives you a little rundown of the story and the characters that fill it.
I loved Glass. If you haven’t read my review yet, you can read it here. I know there are some critics out there that didn’t like the movie. But I thought the film fell right in line with the story that Shyamalan told in his last two films. It’s was a natural progression of those films, and the way it played out made complete sense to me.
I’m not sure what other people were expecting, but this is a pure Shyamalan film. If you are hoping to see something like what Marvel and DC are doing in Glass, that’s not what you’re going to get. Glass is a completely different...

The output of Glass helmsman M. Night Shyamalan hasn’t always earned the most affectionate of responses, with his run from 2004’s The Village to 2013’s After Earth yielding one critical dud after another. Nonetheless, if the reception to 2015’s The Visit was mixed-to-positive, 2017’s Split officially put the filmmaker back in the good graces of critics. And when the James McAvoy-led horror hit teased a subsequent crossover with 2000’s Unbreakable, it looked like Shyamalan was all set to keep the momentum going.
Sadly, it appears as if the filmmaker’s triumphant comeback may have hit a snag, with early reviews of Glass suggesting a messy and dated work. Just take this new write-up from Inverse’s Eric Francisco, who suggests that the long-awaited follow-up to Unbreakable has come along many years too late:

M. Night Shyamalan’s films tend to exist on the extremes; for many viewers, they are either very good or very bad, with almost no middle ground. After his breakout success with “The Sixth Sense” and “Unbreakable,” Shyamalan disappointed moviegoers with dud after dud, including “The Happening” and “The Last Airbender.” In the past few years, Shyamalan has made an extraordinary comeback with the one-two punch of “The Visit” and “Split.”
With “Glass,” Shyamalan closes a story loop that he started 19 years ago with the critically acclaimed “Unbreakable.” This new sequel finds that movie’s protagonist, David Dunn (Bruce Willis), taking up a side gig as a vigilante superhero with the help of his son Joseph. Still using the ominous-looking green security guard poncho from his old job, Dunn decides the next villain to track down is the very troubled Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy), whose 24 personalities include a super-powered monster known as The Beast.

According to Shyamalan, the movie will incorporate footage from Unbreakable. He wouldn’t get into the nitty gritty details of it because he didn’t want to spoil anything, but he did say:

Ever since Split ended with the whopper of a twist that the movie was actually set in the same universe as 2000’s Unbreakable, M. Night Shyamalan fans have been waiting for the follow-up film that promised to have Bruce Willis’ superpowered David Dunn face off against James McAvoy’s monstrous The Beast – as well as mixing criminal mastermind Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.

We’ve got a brand new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass for you to watch today. It offers us a little more insight into the intentions of some of the main characters, especially Sarah Paulson‘s character, Doctor Ellie Staple and Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass.
There’s so much that we don’t know about the film, but we all know there’s going to be a big twist reveal at the end. I have no idea what that twist will be, but as I’ve been thinking about it, the more I think that there’s something more to Paulson’s character. I don’t know what her true nature is, but I don’t think it’s what these trailers are making it out to be.
As you know, Glass is the sequel to both Unbreakable and Split, and in it, Mr. Glass teams...

In a year full of superhero movies, next January’s Glass offers a different, sideways take on the comic book team-up film. Uniting Bruce Willis’ David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson’s Mr. Glass from 2000’s Unbreakable with James McAvoy’s The Beast from 2017’s Split, the movie ends a loose trilogy that director M. Night Shyamalan has been cooking up for almost twenty years now.
And it sounds like this really will be the end for these characters, as Shyamalan revealed to Digital Spy that he’s not planning a Glass 2 in any shape or form. That’s because he doesn’t want to keep offering his audiences the same old thing and intends to resume his usual tactic of making “original thrillers” once the story he began in Unbreakable is completed.

Glass, the sequel 18 years in the making, finally arrives this coming January and sees the return of Bruce Willis as superheroic David Dunn and Samuel L. Jackson as his nemesis Elijah “Mr. Glass” Price from 2000’s Unbreakable. Not only that, but it’ll pair them up with James McAvoy’s Kevin Wendell Crumb, the psychopathic kidnapper from 2017’s Split. Can director M. Night Shyamalan knock it out the park though with his own unique take on the superhero crossover movie?
We sure hope so, and every piece of the marketing for Glass is getting us more and more hyped for it. For instance, we now have these three new international posters, one for each of the central trio of characters: previous promotional material has referred to them as The Overseer (Dunn), The Mastermind (Price) and The Beast (Crumb).
As you can see below, these one-sheets feature Willis, Jackson and McAvoy...
