Anchor Dana Bash did not seem thrilled on Tuesday when mentioning how Musk — whom she called the “Disruptor in Chief” — changed his X handle to “Harry Bōlz.”.

Hollywood Icelandic mogul Joni Sighvatsson, producer of David Lynch’s Palme d’Or winner “Wild at Heart” and head of L.A.-based Palomar Entertainment, has partnered the Scandinavian powerhouse The Global Ensemble Drama and South Africa’s Diprente Media for the feature adaptation of Jonas Jonasson’s best-selling book “The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden.”

The majority English-language project in development will be directed by high profile South-African talent Kagiso Lediga from a script by Karabo Lediga, both credited for Netflix’s first African series “Queen Sono.”

“The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden” is the second Jonas Jonasson movie adaptation for Sighvatsson, after the executive produced “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” which grossed over $51 million worldwide.

A panel of top Netflix executives touted 10 years of the global streamer in such key European territories as France, Germany and Italy on Tuesday.

At Content London, vp of content Emea Larry Tanz, vp of content France Pauline Dauvin and vp of content Italy Tinny Andreatta spoke during a fireside discussion celebrating big milestones for Netflix, with the 10-year anniversary this year in France and Germany and more dates to mark in 2025 in Italy and Spain.

During the session, Tanz shared that between 2020 and 2023, Netflix invested €6.5 billion ($6.8 billion) in European, non-English series and films, including some of the service’s most popular series and films, such as Society of the Snow (Spain), Troll (Norway), Borgen (Denmark), Under Paris (France), High Water (Poland), and The Hand Of God (Italy).

“That’s great for our members from films and series they get, but also for the industry,” Tanz said. “That has resulted in 60,000 jobs just in Europe.

In cinema, horror movies are unique in the continuation of their franchises. It's uncommon for a traditional film series to have more than a few titles, but when it comes to scary stuff, it seems normal for there to be five, or even more installments. For the most part, an overextended lifetime for a franchise doesn't do it any favors. Oftentimes, studios will try to squeeze as much content out of an idea as they can, which leads to an overall drop in quality.

One of Norway’s biggest export names, whose credits include Juliette Binoche starrer “1,000 Times Good Night” and Golden Bear nominee “Utøya- July 22,” director Erik Poppe will kick off the Norwegian Film Festival in Haugesund on Aug. 18, with his much-anticipated drama “Quisling – The Final Days,” ahead of the film’s international premiere at Toronto’s Special Presentations.

Although set in Norway during WWII, the film explores today’s pressing issue of the rise of right wing extremism and its threat to democracy.

It centres on the last days before his execution on Oct. 24, 1945, of the infamous Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling, whose name has become a byword for traitor. As Quisling sits in his dark cell, he receives the visit of the priest Peder Olsen. Their encounters – documented in a diary written by Olsen that served as a key source for the script – turn into a psychological battle between the humanist and the fascist.

Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder both managed audience boosts last week to reclaim their spots atop the Netflix streaming charts.

The Spongebob spinoff movie managed 13.4M views, making it the most-watched title of the week, while A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder churned out 8.4M views — up a million from the week prior and good enough for No. 1 in TV.

The film in second place was Ferdinand with 7.3M views.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 debuted in second place among TV, also with 8.4M views. The series returned for its final season on August 8 and, seeing as it is already rivaling the first place title, it’s likely that The Umbrella Academy will take the lead in the coming weeks.

"Under Paris" is one of Netflix's most popular non-English movies, ranking third of all time. The film's success globally indicates an inevitable sequel, as disaster films like this tend to entertain viewers. A potential sequel was teased in the post-credits scene, hinting at a continuation of the shark invasion storyline.

Out of all the foreign Netflix movies released over the years, Under Paris has been an overwhelming success for the streaming service, leading one to believe that a sequel is in the cards. The 2024 French survival thriller film, directed by Xavier Gens, chronicles a shark outbreak in the unlikeliest of places Paris, France. Lilith, a shortfin mako shark, travels from the Pacific Ocean to the River Seine in Paris, threatening the citizens of France's largest city. Under Paris' "Sharks in the Seine" premise may seem ridiculous, but the movie's horrors and thrills seemingly drew a substantial crowd in.

Since its debut in June, Under Paris has been steadily climbing up the Netflix Top 10 list, but the shark thriller could end its run as the most popular non-English movie on the streaming service.

Under Paris is currently sitting in third place on Netflix’s most popular non-English film list with 96.6M views, behind only Society of the Snow (98.5M) and Troll (103M). The film still has roughly a month left in its 91-day premiere window, so it could easily overtake Troll to take the number one spot.

It appears to have been a bit of a slow week on Netflix, with the most-watched title racking up just 12.8 million views. That was Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, ranking atop the English films list.

On the TV side of things, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder made its debut with 7.4M views, which was good enough to send the YA mystery series to No. 1 on the English TV chart.

Cobra Kai Season 6A seems to be losing steam, cutting its viewership by more than half this week, with just 4.1M views. Still, that put it in second place. Meanwhile, Simone Biles Rising had a good week, rising to No. 3 with 3.8M views, which is up just slightly from the week prior, likely aided by her stellar performance at the Paris Olympics.

Elsewhere in TV, Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam took fourth with 3.5M views, while Season 6 of Too Hot To Handle moved down to No. 6 with 2.7M views.

Netflix’s latest standup special, Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats, managed No. 7 with 2.5M views after its Saturday night debut. That’s a strong showing for the comedy special, which will likely rake in a larger audience this upcoming week, since only about 24 hours of viewership were accounted for during this measurement window.

Back to film, Find Me Falling dropped to No. 5 this week, down from the top spot the week prior, drawing just 5.6M views. Thats about a third of the audience it had in the previous interval. Kids animation appeared to be the strongest winner this week with three spots in the English film Top 10 — Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie at #2 (7M views), Trolls Band Together at #4 (5.9M views), and The Bad Guys at #8 (4.2M views).

Under Paris is still going strong on the non-English film list, claiming seventh place with 1.7M views. It has already made its way onto Netflix’s most popular list with more than 95M views since it debuted, but it has about a month left in its 91-day premiere window, meaning it could very well surpass Troll to be the streamer’s most-watched non-English language film of all time.

Also, the eighth and final season of teen crime drama Elite moved into the top spot on the Non-English TV List, clocking 3.9M views.

From Aug. 17-23, the charming coastal town of Haugesund, Norway, will showcase 76 films and 21 shorts in the newly renovated Edda film hub, offering two extra screening rooms, bringing the total halls to seven.

“We are looking forward to using the two new luxury halls and giving both the films and the audience a quality experience,” said festival honcho Tonje Hardersen.

Many of the high-quality features will screen in the festival’s main program, including several Cannes entries making their Norwegian premiere, such as “All We Imagine as Light,” “The Substance,” “Wild Diamond,” “The Girl with the Needle” and “When the Light Breaks.”

As far as movies go, the Amazon original Jackpot! arrives on Aug. 15 starring Awkwafina and John Cena. Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Netflix added nearly 30 million global paid subscribers in 2023, though it might have watered down its hit pool in the process.

According to a new study by British streaming-data company Digital i, Netflix had fewer than half the global hits in 2023 (10) than it had in 2022 (22). Digital i defines a “hit” as an original movie or a series that was watched by at least 30 percent of Netflix’s subscriber base in North America, EU, and Latam.

Screen International has unveiled the shortlist for the second edition of the Global Production Awards which celebrates outstanding and sustainable work in the world of film and TV production, locations and studios.

The awards recognise organisations and companies working in the film and TV industry including studios, production companies, film commissions, location, suppliers and manufacturers and any services involved in film and TV production.

Among the companies shortlisted are Universal, Warner Bros, Fremantle, BBC and Sky.

Let’s begin with one category with some heavy hitters – Netflix’s lineup of English-language movies.

Just after Spaniard J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-shortlisted “Society of the Snow” opened on Netflix to a massive 55.8 million hours watched over Jan. 4-7 – the second best bow ever in watching time for a non-English Netflix movie – Icex Spain Trade & Investment, the country’s powerful export and inward investment board, has unveiled a new deal with Parrot Analytics.

Under the agreement, Parrot Analytics will make its services available at a discount to Spanish producers, furthering their titles’ platform potential, and chance of co-production and sales.

The deal makes a lot of sense. Parrot Analytics uses a bouquet of engagement metrics across social media and streaming numbers to establish the demand and value of IPs at a regional, territory and platform level. It estimates it analyses the behaviour of 2 billion consumers worldwide.

The agreement comes as “Society of the Snow” 55.8 million hours watched in only bested among Netflix non-English films by Norway’s “Troll.

Madrid-based Rock & Ruz – the production company of Netflix’s “Nowhere,” which has just been confirmed by Netflix as its most-viewed Spanish-language movie of all time – has pacted new projects with Italy’s Leonardo Fasoli, a head-writer of “Gomorrah” and creator of “ZeroZeroZero,” and Spain-based Alejandro Hernández, a co-writer on Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and “La Fortuna.”

As 2023 hits its final straights, Spain’s “Nowhere,” a mother-baby survival thriller, rates as the most-viewed non-English title – film or series – of 2023, with 77.9 million views. It also ranks as Netflix’s second most-watched non-English movie of all time, currently punching 141.6 million hours, bettered only by Norway’s “Troll.”

“Nowhere” also has legs: No other non-English Netflix movie has punched 1.6 million views on its seventh week of release.

That achievement is all the more remarkable given that “Nowhere” is also the first title by the film’s producer Miguel Ruz and exec producer Jordi Roca at their new Madrid-based production company Rock & Ruz which they launched after the success of their first film together, Mario Casas-starrer “The Paramedic” (“El Practicante”), also on Netflix.

Having seen success with last year's rocky adventure Troll, Roar Uthaug, the director of The Wave, is ready to bring the world another instalment. Netflix has ordered a sequel to Troll.

The original film chronicled the aftermath of an explosion in the Norwegian mountains, which awakens an ancient troll. The story revolves around a fearless paleontologist who embarks on a journey to stop the troll from wreaking deadly havoc.

Troll quickly became Netflix's most popular non-English film of all time, with a record-breaking 103,000,000 views in its first 91 days.

"Making Troll was a lifelong dream come true, and the reception our Norwegian movie has received around the world has been unbelievable," says Uthaug. No plot details have been revealed for the movie, other than it will explore similar fairytale territory.

The actress, 56, told Women’s Health in a new interview that she’s in the middle of menopause, but is her “best self” now that she’s reached her mid ’50s.

Berry shared, “The most important thing about owning your sexuality as a woman is accepting the station you’re at—and embracing that.

“And I say that because I’m smack dab in the middle of menopause. And I am challenging everything I thought I knew about menopause. Things like: ‘Your life is over.’ ‘You are disposable.’ ‘Society no longer has a place for you.’ ‘You should retire.’ ‘You should pack it up.’
