There is no actor that defines late '80s and '90s romantic comedies more than Meg Ryan. Her irrefutable movie star magnetism, combined with an incongruous sense of relatability, gave her an alluring aura that lent an undeniable "America's Sweetheart" charm to the films in which she starred. From 1989's "When Harry met Sally" to 1993's "Sleepless in Seattle" and 1998's "You Got Mail" — which remains dated in the most fun way possible — Meg Ryan was essentially the face of rom-coms for well over a decade, and deservedly so.
But Ryan wasn't only known for romancing Tom Hanks. Though the actor became synonymous with romantic comedies following "When Harry met Sally" (still one of the best Meg Ryan movies), she also starred in a wide variety of Hollywood fare, from her small role in 1986's "Top Gun" to playing Jim Morrison's girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in Oliver Stone's...

Meg Ryan, 61, was spotted on a night out in New York City after news that her upcoming rom-com’s release date has been pushed back.
In a green dress and Dr. Martens Oxfords, with a stylish messenger bag, Ryan and her friend wandered around the busy Soho neighborhood. The actress looked happy despite how her rom-com’s release date was pushed back another month.
Ryan was recently in the news after fans expressed shock over photos of her at the premiere of Michael J. Fox‘s documentary where she looked utterly unrecognizable.
The film’s production company, Bleecker Street, announced that the premiere of Ryan’s highly anticipated return to rom-coms, What Happens Later, was delayed until after the release of Taylor Swift’s Era Tour concerts movie.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

If you’re looking for a documentary that tells you about David Bowie, the man, researched and presented with clear-eyed, journalistic rigour, then Moonage Daydream is not it. You won’t learn Bowie’s date of birth, the names of his first school or first girlfriend or children, his personal politics, favourite colour or even the nature of the disease that killed him. You won’t learn why he chose this or that film role or the meaning of this or that lyric. The words “David Robert Jones”, Bowie’s legal name for his entire life, are not mentioned once. The smattering of biographic detail we do get – a light-touch look at his relationship with his troubled half-brother and distant mother, his meeting second wife, Iman tell us little that a Bowie fan can’t find out from watching literally any of the dozens and dozens of Bowie documentaries produced over the years.

Plot: The life and art of David Bowie, as depicted through archival interviews, performances and footage.
Review: Moonage Daydream comes from director Brett Morgen. Over his long career, Morgen has tried to elevate the biographical documentary into an art form. He never uses talking head interviews, preferring to allow his subjects to do the talking for him. In The Kid Stays in the Picture, he had producer Robert Evans alive and well, allowing him to record narration for the film, which, as Patton Oswalt memorably described it, was like listening to Lucifer read his memoirs. In his Kurt Cobain doc, Montage of Heck, he had to get creative, creating musical montages and sound collages. His latest, Moonage Daydream, plays like a melding of the two styles. On the one hand, the movie has constant narration by its subject, the late David Bowie, cribbed from the endless amount of interviews he gave over his career,...

David Bowie’s “Beat of Your Drum” is reworked into bruising, majestic art-rock in a 2018 mix of the track. The new version appears on the Loving the Alien (1983-1988) box set, a collection of Bowie’s studio and live albums from that era.
Sawing strings and David Torn’s crashing guitars highlight the cut, which originally appeared on Bowie’s 1987 LP, Never Let Me Down. “Torn’s ambient guitars start the song that now lead into a much darker world than its shiny predecessor,” producer Mario McNulty said in a statement,...

The upcoming David Bowie box set Loving the Alien (1983 – 1988) has revealed its newly revamped take on “Zeroes,” a track off the full-album “2018 version” rerecording of the late icon’s 1987 LP Never Let Me Down.
Prior to his January 2016 death, Bowie expressed a desire to rerecord Never Let Me Down, “a bitter disappointment” as he called it, with less-dated production and instrumentation; this version of “Zeroes” strips off the Eighties synths and gated drum sound and fills in the void with newly recorded guitar work while keeping Bowie’s original vocal track intact.

Even though the fellow English crooners had a lot in common, David Bowie managed to leave Sting in awe. In an exclusive statement to People, Sting reflects on Bowie's death at the age of 69 on Sunday. For Sting, 64, the loss of music's history-making icon brought back a cherished memory he shares with wife Trudie Styler, 62. It’s been some time since Meg Ryan has lit up the big screen in a comedy. After abandoning her 80s persona initiated by her now-synonymous role in When Harry Met Sally, the actress dove into darker projects around the early 2000s. To be honest, who wouldn’t want to star in a gritty Jane Campion drama in just your birthday suit? Still, that was some ten years back, and following a dabble in forgettable fare such as The Women and Serious Moonlight, Ryan could be in line to rekindle her cinematic career with Fan Girl.
Under the direction of Paul Jarrett, the film will apparently follow a by-the-numbers teen movie formula. The story is “about a 15-year-old post-Millennial teen who lives for making movies and idolizing her favorite band. Given only a few days to complete a final film project, she comes up with an idea that could bring her two passions together.

She will also star in the film alongside Sam Shepard and Melanie Griffith, while Tom Hanks, who Ryan memorably starred alongside in Sleepless In Seattle and You've Got Mail, will be executive producer. 2013 will close out nicely for Bob Odenkirk, with the actor saying farewell to "Breaking Bad" and soon to be seen in Alexander Payne's "Nebraska." While he waits for things to get moving on that Saul Goodman spinoff, he's joining another TV show that is already getting all sorts of attention. FX's Coen Brothers produced "Fargo" series has finalized its cast with Odenkirk, Kate Walsh, Joey King and Oliver Platt joining Martin Freeman, Colin Hanks and Billy Bob Thornton in the show. Plot details thus far are being kept under wraps, but it's another "true crime" story with a Minnesota nice vibe. Production on the 10-episode series gets underway next month, and it will air in the spring. [Variety/Deadline] Remember Meg Ryan? Once the go-to rom-com actress, Meg Ryan has been little seen in recent years, with her last feature role in 2009's movie-you-forgot-about "Serious Moonlight" while more recently she's had...

Stone Faced: Rahimi’s Concept Bogged Down By Transparency
As he did with his 2004 film, Earth and Ashes, Afghan filmmaker Atiq Rahimi adapts one of his own novels, The Patience Stone, for his latest feature. A situational drama inspired by a native fable concerning the titular stone, Rahimi proposes a ‘what if’ scenario that unfortunately gets repetitively tiresome, even if its locale grants it a certain compelling fervor. What if a Muslim woman could speak her mind truthfully without fear of consequence, relay her innermost thoughts and emotions to a catatonic spouse that’s kept her under the harsh thumb of his oppression for a decade? Whatever agency our lead protagonist is able to establish for herself, there’s an arid hue of hopelessness surrounding her specific situation, and its dubious streak of fortune makes this feel like science fiction.

Porter Profiles Public Defense With Appreciative Probing
Before dipping her toes into the film world as an executive producer on films like Serious Moonlight and Showtime’s The Green, debuting director Dawn Porter worked as an attorney for ABC Television. So, it’s no wonder that with her first docu feature she approaches the legal system with a critical eye while paying tribute to the men and women that work in the paperwork-filled trenches of lawyership as valiant, but under-appreciated public defenders. Following a trio of Georgia and Mississippi based attorneys as they inventively fight for the freedom of their clients in the face of moral axioms, mounting caseloads and suffocating six-figure student debts, Gideon’s Army veritably asks, with such professional pressure and often thankless clientèle, is justice for all even possible?

Before embarking on her film career, documentary filmmaker Dawn Porter was an attorney at ABC Television. Since, she's gone to work in narrative features as an executive producer for films including "Serious Moonlight," which premiered in 2009 at the Tribeca Film Festival, and Showtime’s "The Green." She's at Sundance this year with "Gideon's Army." What's It About: "Young public defenders working in the deep south. They have low salaries, large case loads and little help." What's It's Really About: "Idealistic young people who want to help poor people. The criminal justice system is their Goliath and they have very limited tools to fight back. In the end being a good lawyer is not enough - they have to decide how much they are willing to sacrifice." My Chief Challenge: "The actual practice of law is not a very visually interesting thing - its a lot of computer research...

I came across a few images of Meg Ryan at the start of the weekend and nearly fell out of my chair. The actress has been away from the big screen for a little while (good idea), apparently getting ready to direct her first feature film. The last time I saw her was when she made a guest appearance on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and that was shocking enough. (By the way Larry, just when I thought you had gotten yourself into All the trouble, you did what you did last night...) But back to our girl Meg, Jesopus H. Godtopus, what has she done to her face? People are always talking about Nicole Kidman's botox; she's got nothing on Ryan. And of all the women out there doing stuff to their faces, I think I'm most disappointed in Meg. She was so damned adorable and she could have aged pretty gracefully,...

The 1983 Big Chill was directed by Lawrence Kasdan including Jeff Goldblum, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Kevin Costner as the dead character Alex.
Wendy Finerman and Nathalie Marciano will produce and Finerman will executive produce along Lisa Zupan. Finerman told Variety:

Meg Ryan will step behind the camera with the dramedy Into the Beautiful, her rep confirms to EW. As Variety reports, the feature is “being developed as a contemporary Big Chill with longtime friends reconnecting,” and as of now, there are no plans for Ryan to act in the film as well. But should she?
On one hand, this is material Ryan obviously connects strongly to, and if a role is right for her, it could remind audiences why they used to love seeing her onscreen. I think of something like Helen Hunt’s 2008 feature directorial debut, Then She Found Me,...

Meg Ryan will be making her directorial debut with Into The Beautiful, Variety is reporting.
The film is to be a comedy-drama, scripted by Anne Meredith, a relatively little-known writer, who was part of the team that wrote Rated X, the Emilio Estevez-directed TV movie about the notorious Mitchell Brothers, starring Estevez and his brother Charlie Sheen in the leading roles.
Ryan, who is approaching the big 50 mark this year with her birthday in November, has had a wealth of experience in comedy-dramas throughout her career, after her leading role in When Harry Met Sally… brought her international recognition back in 1989. Now, she has decided to step behind the camera lens for the first time, and I have to admit, I’m quite looking forward to seeing how this film turns out. Ryan’s expertise in the genre will almost certainly give her a great vantage point from which to start her directorial career.

For the first time, Meg Ryan will be the one to yell action and cut.
The star actress is going from in front of the camera to behind it, Variety reports, as she's set to direct her first movie. Titled "Into The Beautiful," the film centers on friends reuniting after a long time apart.
"I'm often drawn to pictures that make you laugh and cry," the film's producer Wendy Finerman told the trade publication. "I think this is the perfect project for Meg to bring to life. She's poignant and funny and heartfelt."
Ryan's career has slowed of late; best known for hit romantic comedies "When Harry Met Sally," "Sleepless in Seattle," and "You've Got Mail," she was last seen on the big screen in a less sucessful romcom, "Serious Moonlight," in 2009. She starred in another poorly reviewed effort, "The Women," in 2008.

Meg Ryan’s acting career hasn’t exactly been firing on all thrusters recently, so it’s understandable that she might want to take a crack at some other creative outlet. Like many actors before her, she’s decided that she really wants to direct, and will make her debut with Into The Beautiful. Not much is known about Cavedweller writer Anne Meredith’s latest script, except that it apparently focuses on a Big Chill-style reunion of old friends."I'm often drawn to pictures that make you laugh and cry," producer Wendy Finerman tells Variety. "I think this is the perfect project for Meg to bring to life. Screen writer Adrienne Shelly went for the gusto with Serious Moonlight. This 2009 dark comedy has such a mixture of genres, it's difficult to claim a specific category. With Serious Moonlight, you get comedy, crime, action, feel good scenes, more comedy, a little violence, only to be zapped at the end. What you thought was a predictable movie was anything but.The film begins with Ian (Timothy Hutton) as he drives out to his country home with roses. Displaying numerous bouquets in vases and throwing rose petals on the floor, the flick...

Yesterday, when I mentioned, once again, that the Veronica Mars movie was still basically dead, I wondered again what has happened to Kristen Bell and all that potential I once thought she had. Then, this morning, I see that Zach Braff is starring in an off-Broadway play (granted, an off-Broadway play directed by one of the Weitz Brothers), and then I thought: What happened to his career? Where did that Garden State potential go.
Those two examples, and the other three I'm offering below, just goes to show that no matter how beloved a television character may be, the actor depicting that character is not always well suited for the big screen. It's not for lack of trying in any of the five actors' cases. It's not really typecasting, either. I think what we have, in these five actors, are performers who simply cannot fill out a movie screen. Their presence is not "big" enough.

I just watched one of the most bizarre movies I think I’ve ever seen in the form of Serious Moonlight. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t say it was bad, just bizarre! It’s directed by Cheryl Hines and stars Meg Ryan, Timothy Hutton, Kristen Bell and Justin Long.
The movie opens with Meg Ryan’s character, Louise, a high-powered lawyer coming home to discover that her husband of 13 years (Timothy Hutton) plans to leave her and move to Paris with his new girlfriend Sara (Kristin Bell). She quickly decides that the only way to stop him from leaving is to smash him over the head with a plant pot and tie him up with gaffer tape!
I opened with the word ‘bizarre’ as this movie takes what could be an emotional trauma and makes fun of it. That said, writer Adrienne Shelley realises that this whole...
