“Single Residence Occupancy,” a creative short from creators Omer Ben-Shachar and Belinda Huijuan Tang, has been named the first-place winner of the From Minutes to Movies ShortFest competition.
The social-first short film festival from Imagine Entertainment, Adobe and The Film Zone received almost 4,000 submissions and encouraged filmmakers and creators looking to cross over into longer formats to reach new audiences.
“Single Residence Occupancy” is about a Chinese immigrant living in cramped confines with her family when her application for better housing is denied, leaving her to grapple with how to share the news with her children. Imagine Entertainment will mentor creators Ben-Shachar and Tang on how to develop this short-form concept into a series or feature for distribution. As the first-place winners, they will be awarded with a cash prize of $7,500.

Vertical has revealed the official trailer for a film titled Lola, marking the feature directorial debut of actress Nicola Peltz Beckham (formerly known just Nicola Peltz - most will recognize her from her role in Transformers: Age of Extinction or on "Bates Motel"). Not to be confused with the other indie sci-fi film titled Lola from last year, this is an entirely different one. Peltz Beckham also stars as the titular Lola James. Lola works to save enough money to get her little brother, Arlo, out of their toxic home. Arlo keeps her hopeful, until one tragic night, when her whole world gets uprooted. From that moment on, nothing will ever be the same. The cast includes Virginia Madsen, Trevor Long, Luke David Blumm, Raven Goodwin, Sunil Narkar, Stephen Graybill,...

It always piques the curiosity when an entertainer makes the leap to behind the camera. The latest to do so is Nicola Peltz Beckham, best known for her performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s ill-fated adaptation of “The Last Airbender” and her tabloid presence as a member of footballer David Beckham’s extended family. With the soon-to-be-released film, “Lola,” Peltz Beckham pulls triple duty, playing the titular character in the movie, which she also directs and wrote the screenplay for.

I was a big fan of 2021’s Medusa, aka Medusa: Queen of Serpents, mainly down to the brilliant performance from Megan Purvis in the lead role of Carly and Sarah T.Cohen as her friend… and the fact the film was unlike anything producer Scott Jeffrey had been involved with at the time. For Medusa was a topical drama, wrapped up in the skin (pun intended) of a horror film; like the best of the genre the film was much more than skin deep (pun intended again), offering a layered tale about how women are treated in society. The film was all the more remarkable as it felt like one of the smallest productions Jeffrey and co. had put together.

We all know that Adam Sandler likes working with people he knows. The movies he produces with his production company Happy Madison regularly feature Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and other cast members from his Saturday Night Live days. Many of his movies also feature supporting turns from guys you only see in Happy Madison flicks, like Alan Covert and Peter Dante. And, of course, he loves to cast Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore as his love interests.
So it’s no surprise that Sandler’s latest Netflix movie You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzah sees him once again paired with Idina Menzel, who played his wife in Uncut Gems. But Sandler isn’t the star of You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, a comedy based on the 2005 YA novel by Fiona Rosenbloom. TikTok is surpassing rival platforms in terms of influencer marketing, but a new report argues that some brand sponsors may not have clean intentions. DeSmong, an activist website that reports on climate change, called out the creators who have launched influencer marketing campaigns alongside “big oil” firms like Shell, Bp, and Conoco.
According to the DeSmog report, more than 100 influencers around the world have promoted oil and gas giants on their channels. Those campaigns have reached billions of viewers. The creators on that list include Brooke Schuern, Lizzy from Lizzy’s Nail Art, and “granfluencer” Nora Capistrano Sangalang. For her partnership with Shell, Sangalang praised the brand’s fuel rewards program. “Low key this program sounds lit,” she said.

Andrew Legge’s directorial debut Lola treads the line between the pitfalls of invention and the blessings that initially surround the same. One minute, it’s a seemingly ahead-of-its-time musical trying to capture the imperceivable hues of two sisters in the helplessly limited 16mm black and white frames. And in the blink of an eye, the symphony of love transforms into a heated brawl against the war-torn backdrop of a fictional Britain. To plate up something refreshingly original—a film that would’ve been deemed a masterpiece had it been made around the same time as the narrative is set—is an laudable achievement for a debut director who’s evidently in awe of the bleak nuances of time travel.
Spoilers Ahead
Plot Synopsis: What Happens In ‘Lola’ Film?
The leap of faith that Legge’s narrative opens with is quite extreme. You could turn your screen off right after...

See an exclusive clip above.
The latest film from acclaimed documentarian Steve James, A Compassionate Spy, comes with a fascinating subject: the spy who leaked nuclear information from the Manhattan Project to the Soviet Union, therefore ensuring that America could not establish a nuclear monopoly on the world. It’s easy to see why James would be drawn to the spy, Theodore “Ted” Hall, and his wife Joan as he has often been interested in using individuals as the framework to explore larger societal issues. Utilizing a hybrid of recreations, archival footage, and modern-day interviews, James crafts a portrait of a man, a relationship, and the sheer weight of the decision to betray your country to save the world.

"Lola was never meant to be an instrument of violence..." Dark Sky Films has revealed an official trailer for Lola, a strange B&w indie film creation from young filmmaker Andrew Legge. This premiered at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival last year and also played at FrightFest, and the Melbourne & Edinburgh Film Fests. Set in 1941 in England, two sisters invent a machine that intercepts broadcasts from the future. With World War II dawning, they use it to change history. The story follows Thom and Mars, who build the machine they call Lola, that can intercept radio & TV broadcasts from the future. "While Thom becomes intoxicated by Lola, Mars begins to realize the terrible consequences of its power." Uh oh. The indie film stars Emma Appleton and Stefanie Martini as the two sisters, Thom and Mars (Thomasina and Martha), with Hugh O'Conor, Rory Fleck Byrne, Ayvianna Snow, and Aaron Monaghan. This looks like a very intriguing experimental creation,...

One of the more compelling discoveries we came across on the festival circuit last year was Andrew Legge’s directorial debut Lola, a faux found footage film that plays with historical and science fiction. Starring Stefanie Martini, Emma Appleton, Rory Fleck Byrne, and Aaron Monaghan, the film follows two sisters in 1941 Englad who invent a machine that intercepts broadcasts from the future. With World War II dawning, they use it to change history. Picked up by Dark Star Films for a U.S. release in theaters and on VOD on August 9, the first trailer has now arrived.
Here’s the official synopsis: “1941, sisters Thom and Mars have built a machine, Lola, that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. This allows them to listen to iconic music before it has been made, place bets knowing what the outcome will be and embrace their inner punk well before the movement came into existence.

Samuel L. Jackson says he’s been well aware of the growing role and impact of AI in Hollywood, which is why he doesn’t sign contracts that let projects use his likeness “in perpetuity.”
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Secret Invasion star and recent Tony nominee opened up about his support for the writers strike, why Secret Invasion wasn’t exactly the thing he was pulling for in the MCU and working with Brie Larson, “a stronger person than people give her credit for” amid online harassment from “incel dudes who hate strong women.”
During the conversation, Jackson also opened up about the SAG-AFTRA negotiations and the role of AI in Hollywood, noting that it was a topic he had already been thinking about since his Star Wars prequel days. “People just started worrying about that? I asked about that a long time ago.

If it seemed like The Beatles could do no wrong during their career, that’s because it was pretty much the case. After some struggles with their earliest singles, their debut album, Please Please Me, rocketed to the top of the charts in England. (So did every studio album through Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band). Even their lousy A-side songs became hits. Still, The Beatles dealt with a few BBC bans, including their video for “Hello, Goodbye.”
Paul Mccartney’s talent couldn’t stop the BBC from banning The Beatles music video for ‘Hello, Goodbye’
Kenny Lynch, a musician who toured with the Fab Four in the early 1960s, called Paul McCartney and John Lennon idiots when they struggled to write a song. Soon after, he set a record by becoming the first person to cover one of their songs. He must have sensed what the future would hold.

Sooner or later, the lead actor of the movie-within-a-movie being made in “A Brighter Tomorrow” jokes, disgruntled director Giovanni (self-referential cornball Nanni Moretti’s latest on-screen avatar) was bound to make a movie that ended with its protagonist’s suicide — the implication being, the world wouldn’t be so surprised to find the helmer putting a noose around his own neck.
Well, he does and he doesn’t go that far in a high-concept meta-comedy that presents its director’s personal disillusion with art, love and the state of the world, before becoming a “just kidding” group hug for his fans. That’s a sizable public in Moretti’s native Italy, where this welcome return-to-form has already been a commercial success. The director’s not nearly as big a deal abroad, however, to the extent that few may care whether the Cannes regular (who won the Palme d’Or for...

The captivating opening sequence of Nanni Moretti’s A Brighter Tomorrow (Il Sol dell’Avvenire) watches as a dusty old Fiat passes Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome and pulls up next to the Tiber. A man with a can of red paint and a rope steps out and scoots halfway down the stone wall that hugs the riverbank, neatly painting the words of the title. The whimsical music instantly alludes to Fellini, an homage confirmed soon after by the arrival in town of a Hungarian circus, and for all intents and purposes, the film is Moretti’s Otto e mezzo. Or at least it wants to be.
More than 20 years after winning the Palme d’Or with his shattering grief drama The Son’s Room, Moretti is back with his 14th feature for his regular appointment with Cannes. But after decades of wildly varying success attempting to stretch beyond his signature auto-fictions,...

Dark Sky Films has acquired North American distribution rights to Lola, the science fiction drama from writer-director Andrew Legge and starring Stefanie Martini (Prime Suspect 73, The Last Kingdom) and Emma Appleton (The Witcher, Pistol). The film will be released in early August.
Giles Edwards, head of development and acquisitions at Dark Sky Films, is currently on the ground in Cannes and negotiated the distribution agreement with Yana Georgieva, head of sales for Bankside Films.
Lola is set in 1940 in England, where enterprising sisters Thomasina “Thom” Hanbury (Appleton) and Martha “Mars” Hanbury (Martini) have built a machine, Lola, that can intercept radio and TV broadcasts from the future. The device gives them an exciting preview of the world to come, including music by the likes of David Bowie and the Kinks. But with World War II escalating, the sisters decide to use the machine as a weapon of intelligence, with world-altering consequences.

It’s been an interesting year for cinema thus far, and that won’t be slowing down in April.
There’s Leonor Will Never Die (7 April) – a meta love letter to Filipino cinema, led by the marvellous Sheila Francisco – and also Lola (7 April), a Second World War time travel drama whose low budget shows that you can do impressive things with very little. Albert Serra’s Pacifiction (21 April) is an intoxicating descent into danger and, as with the Spanish filmmaker’s previous films, it may be divisive, but demands to be seen – even if just to form your own opinion.
Ben Affleck directs and stars in Air (7 April), which follows Nike’s revolutionary partnership with a young Michael Jordan. Affleck’s receiving some of the best reviews of his career for the film. Meanwhile, grisly horror Evil Dead Rise (21 April) has generated word-of-mouth hype since its premiere at South by Southwest.

In their latest edition of “First Drafts of Rock,” Kevin Bacon and Jimmy Fallon have taken on the Rolling Stones’ 1966 hit “Paint It, Black.” In the clip, filmed for The Tonight Show, Bacon embodies Mick Jagger while Fallon becomes Keith Richards.
In their “first draft” of the rock song, the pair croon, “I go to Michaels/ And I ask, ‘Where is the paint?’/ They tell me, ‘Aisle 6’/ That’s where they keep the paint.” Later, the lyrics get even more meta: “I see a can of paint/I want to paint the paint.

Fourth entry in franchise sets record.
Updated: Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 dominated the North American box office over the weekend with a spectacular confirmed $73.8m that delivered the rarest of things – a franchise record from a fourth instalment.
In fact Chapter 4 kept a remarkable feat going – every successive instalment in the nine-year Keanu Reeves assassin series has opened stronger than its predecessor.
Buoyed by strong reviews the film directed by Chad Stahelski is expected to become the highest grossing entry in the franchise and looks a strong bet to overtake the $171m final gross set by 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.

To no one’s surprise, Edward Berger’s epic WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front is the front runner for this year’s German film awards. The Netflix feature, which picked up nine Oscar nominations and won four — both records for a German movie — received 12 nominations on Friday for Germany’s top cinema honor, known as the Lola.
The film, the first German-language adaptation of the Erich Maria Remarque classic 1929 anti-war novel, is the clear favorite going into this year’s Lolas. During the 1960s, American music was taken over by artists from the U.K. This era became known as the British Invasion, with U.K. pop and rock artists dominating the American charts. Many of these artists came and went, but others were wildly successful and remain in the pop culture zeitgeist today.

The fate of All Rise is, once again, up in the air.
Deadline reported Thursday that Warner Bros. Television has released the cast of the legal drama.
OWN, which picked up the show from CBS after the network canceled it after two seasons, has yet to schedule the second half of All Rise Season 3.
The show has been off the air since early August, so the lack of updates on when the rest of the season would air has been a major cause for concern.
Deadline notes that OWN will not make an official decision on a pickup for a potential fourth season until the next batch of episodes air.
The outlet believes the episodes will see the light of day later this year.
However, there's a good chance the cast will have moved on to new projects, meaning that assembling everyone again for a potential All Rise Season 4 will be a difficult task.

Gina Birch has been creating punk art her entire life—but she’s just getting started. What could be more hardcore than dropping your first solo album at 67? She became a legend with the Raincoats, the London punk band she started in 1977, four renegade women inventing their own kind of racket. But she’s got that same rebel spirit on her new solo debut I Play My Bass Loud, on Jack White’s Third Man Records. It’s a statement of purpose, and one of the year’s freshest, funniest rock albums so far.

The film is set in Colombia in 1960, just a few days after the Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann was caught by Mossad agents in Argentina. Polsky, played by Hayman, is a lonely and grumpy old man, living in the remote Colombian countryside. He is a survivor of the Holocaust. He spends his days playing chess and tending his beloved rosebushes.
