Writer/director, Richard Chandler, had never intended for there to be a Rachel character in Sons of Perdition. Instead, the character of Melinda was supposed to have died in Rachel's place during the film's final scene. Chandler was unable to coordinate actors moving to varying states, and with the film's small budget, the production team could not pay for temporary room and board. The characters and their respective deaths had to be re-analyzed.
Due to a conflict in schedule the original Night Crawler was made into a minor character and the gas-mask version of Night Crawler was then written into the script.
The scenes at the Vatican where actually intended to take place within several churches but the idea was given a no-go by the director due to the vulgar content of the film.
Sons of Perdition is the indirect sequel to Our Kingdom Come and has several re-occuring characters.
