At the end of a bumper year for film-making, Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw unveils the contenders for his very own – imaginary – film awards
Most critics compile year-end roundups in a mood of shrugging acceptance that not every year can be great. But actually 2012 has been vintage, with some really brilliant films from the biggest names doing their best work – and some fascinating documentaries. So once again, I have created my imaginary awards nominations in the following categories: best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress, best documentary and best screenplay. You will have to imagine me, in full tuxedo-style evening wear announcing the Braddies at the Dorchester. (I have put Seth MacFarlane, Michael Haneke and Kylie Minogue on my table.)
So, the nominations are …
Best film
Amour (dir. Michael Haneke)
The Master (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
Holy Motors (dir. Leos Carax)
Killing Them Softly (dir.

And so continues my blow-by-blow account of Film4 FrightFest the 13th at the Empire Leicester Square (23-27 August, 2012). Click here to read Part One.Day 3 - Saturday, 25th August Eurocrime! The Italian Cop And Gangster Films That Ruled The 70s (Dir. Mike Malloy, USA) There have been a spate of documentaries in recent years - think Mark Hartley's Not Quite Hollywood, Jake West's Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape and Alex Stapleton's Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel - that appear to crack open the fabric of the known cinematic world and expose a gaping wound literally oozing with rough, rewarding gems about which you previously knew almost nothing at all. As was especially the case with Hartley's film, Malloy will have you...

Disappointed that the History mini-series "Hatfields & McCoys" is already over? Well, if you happen to be in Los Angeles this month, you might want to make your way down to the L.A. Film Festival, where the impressive-looking western "Dead Man's Burden" will be making its world premiere.
We're happy to unveil the pretty gorgeous trailer for the directorial debut of Jared Moshé. The film features a roster of rising talent including Barlow Jacobs (Jeff Nichols' "Shotgun Stories), Clare Bowen (ABC's upcoming "Nashville"), and David Call (Lena Dunham's "Tiny Furniture") to tell the post-Civil War tale about a brother and sister whose relationship is tested when a mining company expresses an interest in buying their land. If Moshé's name isn't familiar, you've likely seen something he's produced, as he's been behind the celebrated documentaries "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel," "Kurt Cobain About A Son" and "Beautiful Losers.

Producer Jared Moshe ("Silver Tongues," "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel") makes the leap to the director's chair with his debut feature "Dead Man's Burden." The Western, starring Barlow Jacobs ("Shotgun Stories"), David Call ("Tiny Furniture") and newcomer Clare Bowen, is making its world premiere in the Narrative Competition at the upcoming Los Angeles Film Festival (June 14-24). Below check out two exclusive photos of the film. Here's the official synopsis: The year is 1870, and a fragmented America still strains to pick up the pieces from a savage Civil War. Martha (Bowen) and her husband Heck (Call) are living on a homestead Martha’s father purchased on the rural New Mexico frontier and struggle to make ends meet. When a mining company expresses interest in buying their land, Martha and Heck see their ticket to a better life. Their hopeful plans are soon complicated when...

Flavorwire's Jason Bailey put together this excellent 3:36 video featuring famous actors in their film debuts in honor of the DVD and Blu-ray release of the excellent documentary Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, which gives good reason as to why they began with Jack Nicholson in Corman's 1960 feature Little Shop of Horrors. As for why they chose the other 35 actors featured I have no idea, but it is a fun watch nonetheless. Below the video I have included the list of actors featured in order of their appearance. And if you haven't yet made it a point to add Corman's World to your Netflix queue do so right now. I wrote down a few of my thoughts on it back in December as well as in my DVD column yesterday. Starring (in order of appearance): Jack Nicholson, Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage, Anthony Edwards, Eric Stoltz, Woody Harrelson,...

Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel
In 2009, producer-director Roger Corman was given an Honorary Academy Award. He'd been making movies since the mid-1950s, starting with titles such as Monster From The Ocean Floor right up to modern schlock like Sharktopus.
Obviously, the Oscar wasn't for these contributions to the art of cinema, rather for what Corman achieved away from the camera. Corman's studios provided a crash course in film-making for hundreds of young hopefuls. His films were made fast and cheap, and if he took you under his wing you wouldn't get rich but you'd soon know how to make a movie – one that played to the enthusiastic drive-in and grindhouse circuits. His companies were officially studios, unofficially they were film schools, and the list of graduates is stunning: Jack Nicholson, James Cameron, Peter Fonda, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, Robert De Niro and hundreds of others.

The Woman In The Fifth (15)
(Pawel Pawlikowski, 2011, Fra/Pol/UK) Ethan Hawke, Kristin Scott Thomas, Joanna Kulig. 84 mins.
Mysteries abound in this sombre, 1970s-style drama, and so do women. Hawke's emotionally wracked American in Paris is plagued by them – not just the seductress of the title (Scott Thomas) but also his estranged wife and daughter, and the pretty Polish waitress. Plus some dodgy (male) gangster types. If it all seems too good to be true, it is, but this doesn't show its hand till very late on – maybe too late – and maybe too many cards, or too few.
Hadewijch (12A)
(Bruno Dumont, 2009, Fra) Julie Sokolowski, Yassine Salime, Karl Sarafidis. 105 mins.
Boldly drawing connections between (Christian) religious devotion and (Muslim) religious extremism, this radical but naturalistic drama follows a rejected nun whose search for spiritual solace takes her far out of her central Paris comfort zone, and deep into the paradoxes of faith.

Well, folks, 2011 is officially in the can, and surprisingly it wasn't such a horrendous year. It was definitely better than 2010, which was a huge step up from the putrid 2009. We laughed, we applauded, we were left dumbstruck, and of course we were infuriated. Read on for our cheers and jeers!

And don't be lazy by just reading along! Get off of your asses and give us your lists in the comments section below. We wanna hear from you if only to compare notes. Lots and lots of notes.

These are times to get your hands dirty.

We're living in Corman's World.

It's hard to overestimate Roger Corman's significance. As the director of low-budget fare like It Conquered the World and Creature from the Haunted Sea, Corman is often regarded as a schlockmeister. And though that may be true, Corman is also a groundbreaking filmmaker without whom the landscape of contemporary cinema would look very different.
Thankfully, to remind us of Corman's immense importance to Hollywood comes Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, an in-depth new documentary from Alex Stapleton — and I cannot think of a better Christmas gift.
Corman got his start back in the 1950s, working extensively for American International Pictures, the independent production house responsible for so many of the B-movie drive-in flicks made during the '50s, '60s and '70s. Along the way, he shepherded the careers of budding filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.

There is entirely too much punctuation in the titles of this week's crop of releases. We've all been making fun of the beast that is "Mission: Impossible- Ghost Protocol; Cruise & Renner + Pegg" but what about this "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" nonsense? "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked"? Even "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel"? There just isn't enough marquee space for all those colons and subtitles. Especially with the glut of holiday time prestige movies. Does the slate seem even more overloaded than usual? I can barely keep up! Phew. Here's what's new in theaters this weekend if you're all caught up on your new releases. I'll be seeing "Shame" this weekend, but I'm not gonna lie, that "Ghost Protocol" (those are nonsense words, we all realize that right?) is looking kinda badass... Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return as Holmes and Watson for their.

In Alex Stapleton's dazzling, honest, oddly emotional new documentary "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel," Roger Corman, the now-85-year-old filmmaker behind such films as "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Death Race 2000," is depicted as a doggedly independent, skinflint-y genius. Through a series of lively interviews with some of Corman's most talented protégés (among them Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Ron Howard and Jonathan Demme) and even livelier clips from his films, the case is made that Corman not only trained and equipped the current batch of living auteurs but that he fundamentally reshaped the Hollywood landscape in profound ways that are still felt today. Like a Corman movie itself, 'Corman's World' starts small and unimpressively, with some behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from a recent Corman joint, the Syfy Channel original "Dinoshark." Everything is...

With Christmas nearing, the holiday blockbusters are upon us and this week sees two big tentpole sequels ("Mission Impossible" and "Sherlock Holmes") make their way into theaters. They're not the only releases opening this packed weekend. See what's opening (and what's worth your money) by checking out the reviews published this week on Indiewire and the blog network. "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel" Indiewire: B+ Through their testimonies (in addition to those of the 80-year-old Corman himself), the movie delivers a compelling argument for appreciating the filmmaker as a major artist who's both largely responsible for many mainstream Hollywood cinema trends while somehow remaining superior to them. "Cook County" Indiewire: C A focus on the daily habits of meth addicts is the main strength of this otherwise murky work, which lacks focus but maintains a grim outlook that...

The holiday rush officially starts this weekend as a handful of the big Christmas blockbusters are hitting theatres today before the floodgates fully open next week. The two biggest releases are Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, both of which are expected to reinvigorate the box office, while Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol is also debuting in IMAX theatres before opening wide next week. Slowly rolling out to more theatres as well is Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody's Young Adult, which runs the risk of being lost in the shuffle because they simply waited too long to promote it, and in select theatres we also have Roman Polanski's latest film Carnage and the documentary Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel. What will you be watching this weekend? What do you think will be the big winners this holiday season?...

Nicholson Tears Up During Corman Tribute
Jack Nicholson fought back tears as he paid tribute to the director who gave him his big break in the late 1950s during a recent documentary chat.
The movie legend agreed to sit down for 20 minutes for director Alex Stapleton's Roger Corman film, Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, but according to The Hollywood Reporter he became emotional as the memories ticked by.
He ended up spending hours chatting to Stapleton, who says, "After we finished, Jack told me, 'I've only gone on camera one other time for something like this - for Stanley Kubrick.'"
Nicholson's first movie role was in Corman's 1958 movie The Cry Baby Killer.

Director, producer and distributor Roger Corman's world seems suspended between magnetic poles: At true north he could be described as the godfather of independently produced and independent-minded film; way down south is the Corman who looks more like the godfather to Don Simpson, a crude flipper of hot cake flicks who originated the high concept, sensation-pummeling mainstream cinema we're stuck with today. Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, director Alex Stapleton's annotated filmography of the filmmaker's wildly tentacular career, is less an attempt to reconcile those poles than to show how neatly and necessarily they are bound together, by both the financial nature of filmmaking and the stubborn question of taste.

Director Alex Stapleton shares a scene from his documentary "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel," which delves into the life and legend of Roger Corman, the indie filmmaking trailblazer. Here, Martin Scorsese and Paul W. S. Anderson reflect on their first impressions of the man. "Corman's World" opens in limited release on Friday, Dec. 16. Roger Corman definitely proves true the old phrase, "Don’t judge a book by its cover." When I first met Roger, I was expecting to meet a cigar-smoking, gold medallion-wearing, very hairy, overweight loudmouth producer. You know, the cliche of what a master of low-budget, genre pics would be like. What I got was the complete opposite. He was refined, well-mannered and stately in his appearance and his speech. I met Roger for the first time in 2006 while interviewing him for a pop culture/arts magazine called Tokion. I had this plan that immediately after our interview I would.

There isn't a splashier or more sensational documentary subject than Roger Corman, a man who has produced hundreds of exploitation and genre movies over the years, answering to no one but himself. In the process of churning out drive-in (and now direct-to-video) fodder, he's launched the careers of countless big time directors, actors, and producers (quickly, among them: Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Joe Dante, Ron Howard, Gale Anne Hurd, James Cameron, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, and Peter Fonda). First time feature director Alex Stapleton took it upon herself to make the definitive Roger Corman documentary "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel" (out this week) and she succeeded, big time. We got to talk to her about her inspiration for the film, how she shaped a 90-minute version out of a six-hour rough cut, and what it was like working with the French duo Air for the film's score.

Critically overlooked and always underappreciated, Roger Corman, the king of exploitation cinema, is just the kind of character that practically screams for his own documentary. Thankfully, filmmaker Alex Stapleton has done just that, and this weekend, "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel" (which premiered at Sundance before going on to play Cannes and the New York Film Festival), will be released in limited release. Corman is a grandfatherly figure now in his 80s that is still able to churn out some vile, whacked-out shit. It's pretty impressive. We got a chance to speak to Corman himself about the documentary, what surprised him about it, and what gonzo stuff he's got coming up. In explaining the process of the documentary, he said it was all Stapleton: "Alex Stapleton, the young woman who made the documentary, approached me a number of years ago, with the idea to do it," Corman said.

Roger Corman has maintained a reputation as the B-movie master for half a century, but it's a distinction that has come at the cost of wider appreciation. "Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel" looks to counter that conclusion by exploring Corman's influence on contemporary American filmmakers ranging from Martin Scorsese to Ron Howard and Peter Bogdonavich, not to mention the acting careers of Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson. Through their testimonies (in addition to those of the 80-year-old Corman himself), the movie delivers a compelling argument for appreciating the filmmaker as a major artist who's both largely responsible for many mainstream Hollywood cinema trends while somehow remaining superior to them. Initially, it's a tough argument. Corman's fast-and-loose Diy approach opened the floodgates for numerous ultra-cheesy efforts from the late 1950's, when he produced movies with titles that told you the whole story,...

I wrote about Project Nim last time (read that here) and since then I have watched six more documentaries, trying to close the gap on the number of documentaries I missed out on seeing over the course of 2011. As a result, I have now seen five of the 15 documentaries shortlisted by the Academy for Oscar consideration and unfortunately I don't have access to the other ten, though I still have the much talked about Senna and Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss yet to watch. Beyond all that, however, I have six documentaries to briefly discuss today so let's no waste anymore time... Undefeated Undefeated is hands-down, without a doubt fantastic. Yet, at the moment, two things piss me off about it. The Weinstein Co. hasn't done anything to promote it. There isn't a clip; there isn't a trailer; and the poster I used to the left is some rush...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Anchor Bay has released this fantastic new trailer for a documentary they are distributing that tells the story of hardcore action B-movie director Roger Corman. The doc is called Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel and it includes footage from several of his awesome films, as well as interviews with several big Hollywood players such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Eli Roth and Jack Nicholson.
I've see a ton of Corman's films over the years, and good or bad they were always entertaining and fun to watch, and in the end that's all that really matters. This looks like a great documentary and anyone that enjoys watching action flicks should enjoy a doc like this.

A one-man movie factory, Roger Corman is now the subject of a film himself. The 'pope of popular cinema' speaks to Xan Brooks in Cannes
Down at the Cannes Marché du Film, the stalls sell monster flicks and "erotical thrillers", gun-toting revenge dramas and a film about a band of kung-fu ninja girls who join a beach volleyball team ("very romantic," insists the sales agent). It is a jumbled, lively place, teeming with circus barkers and recalling a bygone B-movie heyday when you could escort Betty-Sue to the drive-in, watch some screaming teenagers being chomped by a radioactive crustacean and still have change from a dollar. If Roger Corman walked in now, they'd probably hail him as a god.
Instead, I find Corman a little further up the prom, resting his bones in a hotel salon. He explains was up until 3am the night before, attending a reception on Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's yacht,...
