Sam and Melanie plan a trip to Melanie's parents' house to announce that they plan to get married, and that she is pregnant. Unfortunately, Melanie's parents already hate Sam, and everything humanly possible goes wrong for him.
Sam tries to replace Dick's treasured bird after he accidentally kills it by feeding it avocados. Meanwhile, his first visit with his future sister-in-law does not go smoothly either.
Sam brings a friend to fix Dick's painting, and Melanie's sister falls for him. Meanwhile, Sam tries to make amends to Melanie's other sister by helping take care of her children.
A misunderstanding causes Dick and Melanie to think that the wedding is off, which causes them lose their gazebo reservation at the country club. Dick and Sam are forced to try and win it back from the person who now has it.
Sam loses the ring that Dick's mother has given them for the wedding, while Melanie is afraid to tell her mother that she thinks that the wedding dress she is giving her is ugly and that she doesn't want to wear it.
Sam and Melanie are nervous about the future in-laws meeting the day before the wedding. So they tell Sam's parents that Dick had a stroke and that Melanie has diabetes.
Dick and Angela consider renting the apartment above Sam and Melanie so they can have a place to stay when they visit, and Sam is forced by his new boss to fire a friend.
Sam talks Dick into buying Angela a car for Christmas, but Sam gets the car stolen before they make it home. Meanwhile, Angela unsuccessfully tries to keep Melanie from finding out what Sam got for her.
While Angela sits in as a temporary receptionist at Melanie's veterinary office, Dick gets locked out of the house. Meanwhile, Sam tries to weasel out of watching a graphic video in Melanie's childbirth class.
Sam and Melanie's nephew takes a photo of them in a compromising position, and Dick and Angela go behind Melanie's back and find out the sex of their child.
When Sam gives it his all to help the Claytons prepare for Dick's birthday party, he loses his pants and some dignity in his effort to make everything perfect.
