After getting a taste of prestige true crime television with “The Act” and “Escape at Dannemora,” Patricia Arquette has set her next miniseries event at Hulu.

The streamer gave a limited series order to an “untitled Murdaugh murders” project on Friday. The show is “based on Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s stranger-than-fiction family drama, a riveting account drawing from countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular ‘Murdaugh Murders Podcast’ – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years spent following the case,” per the official description.

In June 2021, Maggie and her 22-year-old son Paul were found murdered on their family’s South Carolina property. In a twist, it was discovered that patriarch Alex, who called in their dead bodies, was actually found guilty of the crime. Additionally, more murders have since been linked to the Murdaughs.

Patricia Arquette is set to star in a new as yet untitled Hulu limited series about the Murdaugh Murders from co-creator and showrunner Michael D. Fuller and co-creator Erin Lee Carr.

The series tells the story of Maggie and Alex Murdaugh’s “stranger-than-fiction family drama, a riveting account drawing from countless hours of reporting by Mandy Matney – journalist and creator of the popular Murdaugh Murders Podcast – as well as exclusive, insider knowledge from years spent following the case,” details a release from the streamer.

Arquette will star as Maggie Murdaugh, a wife and mother whose husband Alex Murdaugh was convicted of her murder and that of their son Paul. The patriarch is currently serving two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His attempt to get a new trial was denied in January.

Nick Antosca and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat will executive produce alongside with Mandy Matney. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

The project reunites Arquette with Eat the Cat, Hulu and UCP following their collaboration on the limited series The Act. Arquette received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work on the project.

Arquette’s upcoming projects include The Last Disturbance of Madeline Hynde, opposite Jodie Comer and directed by Kenneth Branagh, and They Will Kill You, opposite Zazie Beetz. Her recent TV credits include Severance, High Desert and Escape at Dannemora, for which she won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Awards.

She is repped by Gersh, 3 Arts Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.

Colin Hanks has joined the bone-crunching, skin-splitting cast of Nobody 2, Universal’s sequel to the 2021 surprise hit produced by 87North.

Bob Odenkirk is reprising his role as mild-mannered family man who is secretly a former government assassin, while Sharon Stone is cast as the stone-cold villainess of the piece. Connie Nielsen and Christopher Lloyd are reprising their roles of the family man’s wife and father, respectively.

Plot details are being kept secret, but sources say that Hanks will play a corrupt sheriff with none too nice ambitions.

Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto, known for his horror and action fare such as May the Devil Take You and segments of the V/H/S installments, is directing the feature, which shoots this month. The screenplay is by Derek Kolstad, Aaron Rabin, Odenkirk and Umair Aleem.

Odenkirk is also producing the action thriller, joining Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, who are producing via their Universal-based 87North.

Robert Taylor will step into the late, great Ralph Waite’s shoes by playing dad to a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs in CBS’ upcoming NCIS: Origins prequel series.

TVLine has learned that the Australian Longmire vet has been tapped to fill the recurring guest star role of Jackson Gibbs, the hard-nosed father of one-day NCIS team leader Jethro, who of course was played on the original series by Mark Harmon. (As previously announced, Austin Stowell, whose TV credits include Secret Life of the American Teenager and Peacock’s A Friend of the Family, will play the younger Gibbs in NCIS: Origins.

Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.

Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?

It's a winning formula -- literally.

Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?

She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.

The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

NCIS: Origins will follow Gibbs during his early days as an NCIS agent. The show, which received a straight-to-series order earlier this year, will premiere during the 2024-25 broadcast season.

Stowell’s previous TV credits include A Friend of the Family, The Hating Game, and Breathe. He also starred in Hulu’s limited series Catch 22, the Steven Spielberg anthology series Amazing Stories, and Public Morals. His feature film credits include Battle of the Sexes, Bridge of Spies, This Tempting Madness, 12 Strong, and Whiplash. Stowell also appeared in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles.

A new NCIS spin-off debuts this fall that will tell stories from the earlier days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

The downside for some fans is that Mark Harmon won’t star in the show, even though he does have extensive involvement.

While Mark won’t appear on screen, he will narrate and executive produce NCIS: Origins.

Mark’s son Sean is also involved in the project. Sean played Gibbs during several flashback episodes of NCIS.

Now we know who will play the (new) younger version of Gibbs.

It has been confirmed that actor Austin Stowell will star as Gibbs on NCIS: Origins.

The news comes from CBS Studios and ends months of speculation from fans.

As a reminder, NCIS: Origins begins in 1991 when Gibbs and Mike Franks work at a Camp Pendleton office.

CBS has found its young Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Catch 22‘s Austin Stowell has signed on to play Gibbs in the NCIS prequel, NCIS: Origins, which was given a series order in early January 2024.

“NCIS: Origins, produced by CBS Studios, is the newest chapter in the NCIS franchise, exploring Gibbs’ early years. Narrated by Mark Harmon, the new series begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS, and follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs,” reads CBS’s synopsis. “In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.”

Harmon originated the character and played Gibbs for 19 seasons, beginning in 2003. In addition to narrating, Harmon will be involved in the prequel as an executive producer.

Austin Stowell (Peacock’s A Friend of the Family) will play the younger version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in NCIS: Origins, which is set in 1991 and will look at the early days of Gibbs’ career in the Navy’s criminal investigations branch. The show’s time frame, 12 years before NCIS began, and Stowell’s real-life age, 39, track with that of Mark Harmon (51) when he originated the character on NCIS predecessor Jag in 2003.

NCIS: Origins is set to be part of CBS’ 2024-25 schedule, as the network gave the show a straight-to-series order in early January. The franchise from CBS Studios currently encompasses the main series, which is in its 21st season; 3-year-old spinoff NCIS: Hawai’i; NCIS: Sydney, the first international edition of the show; and a forthcoming Paramount+ spinoff that will feature the return of former regulars Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly.

Peacock has ordered a limited scripted series about notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Variety has learned.

The announcement was made during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena. The series is inspired by the 2021 Peacock/NBC News Studios docuseries “John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise,” with the scripted series sharing the same name.

Patrick Macmanus will serve as writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the show. Macmanus previously created the first season of the Peacock true crime series “Dr. Death” and the Hulu true crime limited series “The Girl From Plainville,” with Macmanus also serving as showrunner on both shows.

Macmanus will executive produce via Littleton Road Productions along with Kelly Funke, with Noah Oppenheim and Liz Cole of NBC News Studios also executive producing. UCP, where Macmanus is currently under an overall deal, will serve as the studio.

Macmanus is repped by UTA and Cartel Entertainment.

Nick Antosca’s production company Eat the Cat is bolstering its executive ranks.

Gemma Levinson has joined the company as vp development. She’ll take charge of day-to-day development for the company, headed by Antosca and Alex Hedlund, and also help grow Eat the Cat’s roster of TV and film projects.

Despite the cold temperatures forecasted for Kansas City, the NFL says tonight’s AFC wild card game between the Dolphins and Chiefs will take place as scheduled (the league had earlier postponed the Bills vs. Steelers matchup to Monday due to extreme cold).

As for tonight’s AFC game, it will be a rematch between the two teams, who most recently faced off Nov. 5, 2023, in Frankfurt, Germany, where the Chiefs beat the Dolphins 21-14.

Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg are heading back to Cape Fear.

The two legendary directors are executive producing a new “Cape Fear” series currently in development, IndieWire has confirmed; one that offers a new twist on Scorsese’s 1991 film with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte and the 1962 classic with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum.

The show doesn’t have a network just yet, but it is a hot property currently fielding bids from several interested buyers, making it the first major TV series auction since the writers and actors strikes ended. Bidding is said to be in early stages.

Nick Antosca is the creator and showrunner on “Cape Fear.” Antosca is developing it under UCP, which is a division of Universal Studio Group, and producer Amblin Television. Antosca is also executive producing alongside Alex Hedlund for their Eat The Cat banner, and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey will executive produce for Amblin Television.

At one point in time, Steven Spielberg was set to direct the thriller Cape Fear, while Martin Scorsese was attached to direct the historical drama Schindler’s List. Then Scorsese decided to step away from Schindler’s List, a choice that coincided with Spielberg deciding that Cape Fear was too violent for him. So the directors traded movies – resulting in Scorsese directing Robert De Niro and Juliette Lewis to Oscar nominations for Cape Fear and Spielberg turning Schindler’s List into a Best Picture winner. Now Deadline reports that Spielberg and Scorsese are teaming up to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Cape Fear, with Nick Antosca on board as executive producer and showrunner.

Antosca’s previous credits include Hannibal, The Forest, Channel Zero, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Antlers, The Act, Candy, and A Friend of the Family.

In 1991, director Martin Scorsese remade 1962’s Cape Fear, based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald, for Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. It appears they’re returning to the IP: Deadline reports that Scorsese and Spielberg have teamed with “Channel Zero” creator Nick Antosca for a new series that’ll take an unconventional approach.

“Cape Fear” marks the first ever TV collaboration for Scorsese and Spielberg, who are executive producing the project from creator, executive producer and showrunner Nick Antosca.

The series is described as a “a tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. In it, a storm is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison.”

In every iteration of Cape Fear so far, the plot sees a lawyer’s family tormented by the criminal he helped put in prison.

The true crime drama was created by Nick Antosca, with Emmy nominee Jake Lacy (“The White Lotus”) portraying Robert “B” Berchtold, a close friend and neighbor of the Brobergs, a close-knit family with strong Christian values that prove to be all too forgiving and naive. In 1974, after B kidnaps their daughter, Jan Broberg (Grace) at age 12, he relentlessly pursues a relationship with her and shockingly manipulates his way back into their good graces and then kidnaps her again at age 14.

“I am just so proud to have gotten to tell Jan’s story and gotten to play her and portray her,” the actress revealed in our webchat.

Musical tag-teaming doesn’t have results much more fruitful than what came about when the showrunners of “A Small Light” picked Ariel Marx to compose the score for the limited series and Este Haim to serve as executive music producer. Neither Haim nor Marx was in a position to take anything about the job lightly, given that the eight-episode series for National Geographic and Disney+ tells the story of a Dutch woman, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis. Yet, in their very separate roles, both found ways to bring musical light or even levity into a drama that inevitably skews toward tension.

Over the next three weeks, Vizio’s free streaming hub WatchFree+ will host a selection of free episodes from more than 16 fan-favorite movies and series from NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service. Vizio owners will be able to watch the select episodes for free on WatchFree+ and connect directly to Peacock in order to upgrade to a subscription to watch even more.

The partnership kicks off on Wednesday, June 14, and the select Peacock episodes can be found on WatchFree+’s Peacock Preview Channel. The nine-part limited series premiered on streamer Peacock last October, telling the story of Jan Broberg and her family. In the 1970s, Broberg was a young girl and adolescent who was systematically groomed — along with her parents and younger siblings — by her next-door neighbor, a charismatic, master manipulator sociopath and pedophile named Bob Berchtold. NBCU Launch is unveiling two new below-the-line diversity, equity and inclusion efforts aimed at boosting representation in key production roles within the TV industry.

The Below-the-Line Traineeship and Production Assistant Initiative will offer opportunities for paid on-the-job experiences on NBCUniversal TV productions to qualified talent from communities historically marginalized within the industry. In 2021, 15-year-old Mckenna Grace broke new ground as the first child ever nominated for a guest acting Emmy. The notice came for her performance as Esther Keyes on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which could bring her another Best Drama Guest Actress bid this year. She also currently has a shot at a nomination for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress for Peacock’s “A Friend of the Family,” which would make her the all-time youngest performer with mentions in multiple Emmy categories.

Grace, whose 17th birthday will precede the 2023 Emmy nominations announcement by 17 days, appears on “A Friend of the Family” as Jan Broberg, a future actress who was kidnapped at ages 12 and 14 by her neighbor, Robert Berchtold.
