The 27,000 residents of Shuckton, Ontario are awaiting word via a letter if they have been chosen to host the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. The town's chief booster is the mayor, Larry Bowman, with his faithful wife Marilyn and doting son Rampop by his side. The life of the Bowmans behind closed doors is however a different matter. While the townsfolk eagerly listen to the Mayor announce the official decision of their Olympic bid, Death has come to town in the form of a bike riding Drifter. Following the Olympic announcement, Death takes its first victim in Shuckton.

Following the murder of Mayor Larry Bowman, Dusty, the coroner who was a very very close personal friend, and the police investigate. In the police's mind, everyone, including themselves, are suspects. They question among others the Mayor's wife Marilyn Bowman, who reacts in her usual manner. Being breaking news, the local news team arrive on the scene, however without their regular camera person Shaye, and their regular on-air reporter Corrinda Gablechuck, both of who are indisposed. Filling in for Corrinda is Heather Weather, the on-air weather girl. This situation brings to the forefront Heather's professional intentions and her professional limitations. Approaching the funeral, Marnie tries to talk Ricky into attending, although Ricky doesn't think the Mayor would have wanted him there because of their past history. Eventually, the police think they've found the murderer with blood on his hands. But Death has another Shuckton resident as his next target.

People are making preparations following Mayor Bowman's death. As Marilyn holds the wake, she prepares for the funeral and is comforted by a grief counselor, but is more comforted by the things she pours down the sink. At the reading of the will, Marilyn learns of an unusual bequest to her. Ricky, with Marnie's assistance, tries to figure out who killed the mayor. Dusty shows his true feelings toward the mayor during the autopsy, which in turn may make the mayor miss his own funeral. And the breaking news team does a piece about the upcoming burial, but Heather is more concerned about certain aspects of Corrinda's personal life which may affect both their professional lives. As all this is happening, Death takes a break at some old haunts while the next victim is chosen.

The trial of Crim for the murder of Larry Bowman will soon get underway, with the lawyers on both sides making preparations. Crim's lawyer, Sam Murray, has other more pressing issues on his mind. Orchestrated by Heather for her own professional and personal gains, news of Corrinda's pregnancy spreads throughout Shuckton. Despite not wanting a child, the one person who does not seem phased by the news is the father, Shaye. And Marilyn takes over her new duties as the Mayor of Shuckton. When Marilyn learns what the Green Committee entries in Larry's day planner are, Marilyn believes she has a new suspect for Larry's murder. But Ricky also believes he's getting closer to figuring out the murder, especially after he receives a note on his front lawn. He also makes a decision about his own life.

After a discussion with Doc Porterhouse, Corrinda decides what to do about her pregnancy. During this time, Heather continues her professional manoeuvrings. Things take an unusual turn at Crim's trial for Larry's murder. Those in the viewing area include Marnie who is Ricky's eyes and ears as he investigates the murder, and Death himself. Absent are Marilyn who has more important things to do, and Dusty who would rather be intimate with Larry himself. And Sam would rather be with his semi-comatose cat. After day one of the trial is over, Death finally manages to take his second victim in Shuckton.

After Heather is found murdered, her arch rival Corrinda is taken in for questioning as a suspect. An unusual piece of evidence weakens the case against Corrinda. As Heather's murder is deemed similar to Larry's and possibly done by the same person, some question Crim's guilt for Larry's murder, Crim's trial which is still proceeding and he who was in custody at the time of Heather's death. With the trial, Dusty provides some testimony which inadvertently jeopardizes his much wanted and unknown alone time with the deceased Larry. And as Ricky and Marnie continue their own investigation into Larry's death, Ricky learns some information about his own past. Ricky learning this information may be just the catalyst that Death wanted for Ricky.

After previously finding out that Larry was his biological father, Ricky learns who his birth mother is and the true story behind his birth and infancy leading to being dropped off at the Shuckton Orphanage. Dusty's relationship with Larry comes to an end after being caught with his pants down in Larry's coffin with Larry also in it. Crim's trial for Larry's murder continues with closing arguments on both sides. However, Sam is preoccupied by thoughts of Buttonhole to pay much attention to his closing statement. Ricky and Marnie think they've located the instrument used to kill Larry. And Death learns that he has more work to do in Shuckton, but doesn't yet know the target of that work.

Death has three more murders listed to commit before he leaves Shuckton. One of those is Ricky, who has been one of his targets since he arrived in town. Death reveals why he has been after Ricky. Another on the list is Crim, who has been tried and convicted of Larry's murder. With Marilyn and the judge's reinstatement of the death penalty within Shuckton, Crim is scheduled to be executed, the event which Marilyn plans on using as an economic development tool. But with Marnie and Ricky's evidence of the murder weapon in hand, Larry's real murderer confesses. But before Death leaves town, he receives an unusual request from one Shucktonite, and another Shucktonite decides to take the matter of his own eternal future into his own hands.
