On Saturday, February 2nd, a made-up DJ played to more than 10 million made-up characters in a made-up world. And the real-life music industry gasped in unison.
The fictional DJ has a name: Marshmello. No one truly knows his identity, thanks to his white bucket helmet with an unambiguous painted smile and crisscross eyes — although increasingly voluminous online scuttlebutt suggests the man under the plastic cranium is Chris Comstock, a 26-year-old producer hailing from Philadelphia.
The point, though, is that Marshmello could be anyone. He’s an entirely fictional creation, a...

Short of the DayHow far would you go to play this game?
Ar, or augmented reality, is the next big thing. As opposed to Vr, virtual reality, which completely conjures environments, Ar enhances your environment, adding elements instead of fabricating the entire conceit. Think Pokemon Go. What’s just percolating to the surface now will be everywhere in five years’ time, bringing with it new ways of interacting with technology and each other through technology, not all of which are going to be good. After all, if social media has demonstrated anything about society, it’s that we’re all just as comfortable interacting by a degree removed than we are in person, perhaps even more comfortable. Extrapolating off this, we’ve made “games” like The Sims, or Second Life, or No Man’s Sky that create entire universes into which people can disappear for extended periods of time.

See related Class: trailer for episode 4 Class episode 3 review: Nightvisiting Class episodes 1 & 2 review: For Tonight We May Die & The Coach With The Dragon Tattoo Doctor Who Christmas special: Moffat and Capaldi discuss superhero episode
In the gap between Black Mirror’s haunting Christmas episode White Christmas, and its first Americanised season on Netflix, I began to notice a lot of news articles pointing out the similarities between real life and the unsettling predictions that Charlie Brooker based his first seven anthology episodes around. Not least a certain situation involving a pig and a Prime Minister.
Eagle-eyed Den Of Geek readers may remember that I wrote an article about that. It was a lot of fun, in a terrified-for-the-future-of-mankind sort of way.

There’s never been a better time to be a fan of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. For those who have never had the chance to give it a spin, the Game of the Year edition is set to launch tomorrow, which includes both the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, along with all of the game’s free pieces of downloadable content.
These expansions are some of the best we’ve played in recent memory, but The Witcher 3 itself was one of the best game’s of last year. You can check out our original review, in which I gave the game 5 stars out of 5, which we only hand out to a handful of games each year.

Fortunately, Cmt rescued the series in time, renewing “Nashville” for a fifth season. “Supergirl” (2015-16 on CBS; 2016- on the CW) The DC Comics-based action/comedy was already in trouble of being canceled due to low ratings during its first season.

Gabriel Mascaro. Photo by Beto Figueiroa.Similarly to the “slow cinema” fad of international art-house cinema, the docufiction format and variations of the fiction and documentary marriage seem to be in high demand by festival programmers, judging by last year´s Locarno and this year´s Rotterdam programs. The plethora of films at the intersection of both realms, resulting in a blending of cinematic strategies, styles and codes of both formats, span a wide spectrum of options from audience-pleasers like Kaweh Modiri´s Bodkin Ras to avangardishly-tuned Pietro Marcello´s Lost and Beautiful. Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro also fits the label, currently dominating the festival circuit with award-reaping Neon Bull, which sees its release in the Us cinemas on April 8, followed by a retrospective devoted to the director at New York's Film Society of Lincoln Center. Mascaro was born in north-eastern region of Brazil in Recife, the capital and the...

The time has finally come – we are officially living in the future (so long as you set your calendar by excellent 80s movies, and why wouldn’t you?)
Back To The Future Part II made some pretty bold claims as to what the world would look like on the 21st October, 2015. This is usually the kiss of death that will open anyone up to be mercilessly mocked when the real future finally rolls around and it looks nothing like the predictions.
So how does the classic sequel measure up? Actually, not all that badly.
Hopefully we dress a little better than was predicted and we were mercifully spared the 18 Jaws sequels (although even Jaws 2 was a bridge too far to be honest), but now that the day has finally arrived, let’s take a look at how our 2015 compares to the late-80s version of events?

It’s time to observe a moment’s silence; PlayStation Home is nearing the end because, from tonight, the social gaming platform will be shut down for good.
Home launched to users on December 11, 2008 amidst a lot of industry fanfare and hype. It was championed by Phil Harrison, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, who painted an image of a slick, virtual 3D world where gamers could meet and talk in cyberspace, away from the competitive environment of online multiplayer.
It combined elements of the Sims and Second Life with popular RPGs, giving users a “home space” to customise and furnish with objects earned through playing mini-games. But interest in Home quickly started to wane as Sony struggled to capitalise on its full potential. More often than not, it was used by game studios to advertise their latest offering.

Steven Spielberg has been tapped by Warner Bros. to direct the long-gestating adaptation of the nostalgia-heavy Ready Player One. It's currently scheduled to be his next movie after The Bfg, which will be arriving in 2016 so don't expect this until 2017 at the earliest. Before all that, though, Spielberg has Bridge of Spies set to hit theaters on October 16, 2015. If you were born in the '70s or early '80s and consider yourself a film geek, you may want to pick up a copy of Ernie Cline's highly entertaining Ready Player One. It's about a billionaire game designer who dies and leaves his fortune to the first person who can solve all his clues and find the easter egg hidden inside his insanely popular Second Life-type virtual reality game. "I'm going to fight my way out of this world!" There seems to be an oncoming trend with sci-fi involving virtual worlds, e.g. Second Life, most likely thanks to growing interest in virtual reality via Oculus Rift. A new short film called Immersion, written & directed by Raphael Rogers, has debuted online and it's a techno-thriller (though I probably shouldn't call it that) kind of inspired by The Matrix and Tron, about a virtual gaming platform called "Immersion". This 7 minute sci-fi short starts out pretty good, then gets a little choppy in the second half, almost as if he's trying to give us hints at a bigger story in the full-length feature. Which may be what's really going on anyway, another unique short hinting at the potential of more. It looks pretty cool and I'm intrigued by the premise, though I wish the story in the short was a bit clearer.

It seems PlayStation Home will not exist at all next March. Two of the last remaining regions are confirmed to be shut down, and the last region will follow suit.
Sony is a big company so they make big decisions. Such as creating a somewhat Second Life style social platform that never really took off, and then shutting it down. More and more popular books are getting the big-screen treatment, and the latest to have its name up in lights is Sj Watson’s bestseller Before I Go To Sleep. With an A-list class that includes Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, and Mark Strong, it’s an engaging thriller that works hard to keep its audience guessing.
When we caught up with the author earlier this week, we quizzed him on what passage from the novel he was most looking forward to seeing on screen, what lessons he’s learned about his writing process, and plenty more.
How much did you know about amnesia and how much research did you do when you started writing the book?

PlayStation Home may be nearing it's last days as two big regions will be closed next year.

Geek news from Hollywood to keep us in anticipation. One of my favorite novels published in the last few years is Ready Player One, written by Ernie Cline, a fantastic adventure about a kid from 80s living in a dystopian digital future where everyone is playing a global Second Life-like game to win the game creator's vast wealth. It's filled with so many geeky references galore, but it's an awesome book, and it will make for a great movie, if they do it right (more on that later). While we've known for a while now that Warner Bros is planning to adapt the book into a movie, The Wrap is now reporting that they're pushing forward by hiring a prominent geek screenwriter, Zak Penn, to rewrite the first draft co-written by the author and Eric Eason. Here's another synopsis for Ernie Cline's Ready Player One, first published in 2011. Get your own copy.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of one of the most important years in film. The year 1999 truly changed how movies are made and perceived. Twist endings, low-budget pseudo documentaries, classic book adaptations, darker-than-dark comedies, and that loathsome Jar Jar Binks character: 1999 had it all. Not since the summer of 1989 (Batman, Lethal Weapon 2, Ghostbusters 2, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) has a year been more fruitful and transformative at the box office.
Why, exactly, there was suddenly a surge in creativity in Tinseltown during this particular year remains a mystery. Maybe the hysteria of the coming Y2K “apocalypse,” which, as we now know, never materialised, panicked Hollywood executives, and they took risks green-lighting more daring and out-there scripts (just think of Being John Malkovich). Whatever the reason, their anxieties were the movie-loving world’s gain. It’s hard to believe, but all of these...

Maylasia's James Lee doesn't appear to know how to take a break. Hugely prolific, with his work crossing multiple genre boundaries with his career bouncing back and forth between indie and studio work, Lee has taken a step back from features of late but that doesn't mean he's not still working at his customary pace. Nope, it's just that now he's focusing on a series of ultra low budget shorts films that he's releasing for free on his YouTube channel as a sort of exercise to prove to the local industry that there's more than one way to do things. And the results have been interesting.Take, for example, his latest offering, the trailer for an action short film titled Second Life. Yes, the budget limits...

She’s made many wise choices along her road to success, but Lily Allen really wishes she could have a mulligan for a bad call she made in 2009.
The “Smile” songstress tweeted about a time she was offered payment in Bitcoins to perform on the Second Life website, and she ended up turning it down.
Lily wrote, “About 5 years ago someone asked me to stream a gig live on second life for hundreds of thousNds of bitcoins, ‘as if’ I said. #idiot #idiot.”
According to current exchange rates, Allen’s take would have exceeded $100 million, given that Bitcoin has skyrocketed in value.
In career news, Lily has accepted a gig at Glastonbury in 2014- she gushed, “It got confirmed yesterday. That’s the first big thing I’m going to be doing. I’ll be doing 16 weeks of festivals over the summer and then tour.”...

The National Security Agency is taking its snooping virtual by infiltrating online games such as “World of Warcraft,” according to new documents leaked by the Military Industrial Complex’s favorite thorn in the side, Edward Snowden. Some may see the agency’s moves as a disturbing violation of privacy, but Stephen Colbert hailed the spying group’s actions as an exciting breakthrough for espionage on Monday’s edition of “The Colbert Report.” “Folks, the Nsa is just doing their job, and they’re just doing it in more places than you ever imagined,” Colbert said. ”That’s right — the Nsa is spying on ‘Second Life,...

GTA V is probably going to come out on top at the end of this year as 2013′s greatest game. In many (if not most) ways it is well deserved. Considering that there is a new generation around the corner, GTA V has serves as a welcome swan song for this generation of consoles, much like San Andreas did 9 years ago for its generation.
With each passing addition of GTA, the world has yearned for a multiplayer experience that works in harmony with the single player – One that stands up to its stellar solo campaign. With GTA Online, we are almost there…But not quite.
Feel free to disagree, but after just looking on a few forums it becomes quite apparent that most of the following points are issues everybody seems to have with GTA Online. All of these could be rectified with a patch and/or very little work.

In this weekly series, EW — and readers — weigh in on ways to rehab much-maligned characters on some of our favorite shows.
Clearly, Ike Barinholtz is a funny guy. He’s an alumnus of Chicago’s famed improv comedy scene; he’s had successful stints on MADtv and Eastbound & Down; he’s a writer as well as a performer, making him extra sensitive to what makes a good punchline. Last year, his talent even earned special notice from his boss: Mindy Kaling created nutty ex-con nurse Morgan Tookers especially for Barinholtz.
But who is Morgan, exactly? Well… he’s a nurse.

It’s Malala Day! The Pakistani teen who was violently shot by the Taliban continues to be an inspiration to all — on July 12 she visited the Un to deliver a heart-wrenching speech promoting education for young women. Watch it live below!
Most girls celebrate their 16th birthdays with big parties or maybe even new cars, but Malala Yousafzai isn’t most girls. On July 12, Malala’s 16th birthday, the Pakistani teen traveled to the United Nations to deliver an address as part of her new role as a global campaigner for education.
Malala Yousafzai Delivers Speech To The United Nations
Malala’s speech will be the first time she has spoken in public since the Taliban violently targeted her for promoting female education in Pakistan, shooting her in the head in October 2012 as she traveled home from school.
But the Taliban’s horrific and terrifying actions have not deterred Malala.

Oh my God, you guys, it’s happening. It’s actually happening. After all the thinking and sweating and cursing and crying and turning and reaching and waking and dying (Has anyone yet literally died on this show? Has anyone seen beloved Dev recently? Was Tom’s nightmarish vision of Naked Ellis actually an apparition from the spirit world, like that time I had that dream about my grandma leaning out and waving from one of the windows in the Joke Wall on Laugh-In and then when I woke up in the morning my parents called and told me she was dead?) Bombshell is finally — Finally! — opening on Broadway. Can you believe it? I almost can’t! And neither can dear friend and Second Life avatar Ivy Lynn, who is spending the final hours before she ascends into Broadway legend suffering a major crise de confidence. The curtain falls on...

Welcome to this week's roundup of new and notable iPhone and iPad apps – those released for the first time in the last week, as opposed to updates to older apps.
As ever, the price in brackets refers to the initial download, so some apps may include in-app purchases. The 30 best Android apps roundup was posted earlier in the day. For now, read on for the latest iOS releases worth knowing about:

Even Steve Jobs would've raised a sceptical eyebrow if you'd told him a few years ago that in 2013, people would be modelling digital-clay monsters on their iPads then getting them 3D-printed out. That's exactly the idea behind Autodesk's 123D Creature app though: you sculpt and paint creatures then export them as images and 3D models, or order a 3D-printed version from within the app.

Police are currently hunting for the suspected cop killer with a door-to-door search in Big Bear Lake, California, before he strikes again.
Christopher Dorner, the former Los Angeles police officer who is suspected of shooting three people dead, including an on-duty officer, sent Anderson Cooper a package on Feb. 1, which included a bullet-riddle coin and a plan to assassinate more police.
Christopher allegedly sent Anderson a coin, given to him by the previous Lapd police chief, who was allegedly responsible for firing him from the department in 2008, a DVD and notes, admitting his belief that he was fired by a “corrupt” police department. He also posted a 6,000 word message on Facebook, promising to seek revenge against the people he believes were responsible for removing him from the department.

Washington, Dec mber 27:In the virtual world of Second Life, female avatars expose substantially more skin than males, independent of their virtual body proportions, according to a new research.
The human tendency to cover up stems from climatic, environmental, physical and cultural constraints, so measuring people's propensity to reveal skin can be difficult in the real world.
To study human behavior free of at least some of these constraints, Matthieu Guitton and colleagues from Laval University, Canada analyzed how male and female avatars in the virtual, 3- dimensional world of Second Life dressed.

MTV has started up a battle of the Twi-stars, only here they’re pitting character against character and having you vote which one will make it on to the next round. They’re calling it “The Twi-Fight Saga – A Twilight Tournament”. Poor Kebi doesn’t stand a chance against Edward Cullen, and really it looks like anyone facing a Cullen is going down hard. Check it all out below:
NextMovie says:
Frontrunners
There’s no question that the “Twi-o” — or “Twifecta,” if you will — have a solid lead on the rest. The entire series has revolved around them, and the emotional attachment of the fan community to these three is unquestionable. Between them, Edward’s got that immortal swoon factor going for him, while Jacob’s still handily working his muscle-bound good guy routine. Bella, however, has literally transformed by “Part 2″ into this can-do vampiress who’s got some serious skills to bargain with. Not to mention, the bevy of Team Edward and Team Jacob voters may just cancel each other out a little bit.
Another major threat on the board is the fourth No. 1 seed, the ever-lovable Alice Cullen (Ashley Greene). From the very first book, her savvy for fashion, amazing attitude and über-helpful little talent stole our hearts, so she’s got a great shot at the win as well.
Finally, if the “Harry Potter” tournament’s results are any indication, book lovers sometimes fancy their villains just as much as their heroes, especially when the sinister surface is but a layer to their makeup. In the case of Aro (Michael Sheen), the films brought some real substance and enjoyability to the foe. He’s quirky but reasonable, vicious and yet somehow mannered and sympathetic. The “Saga” just wouldn’t be the same without his penchant for collecting valuable vamps and obeying the law above all, so he’s certainly a top tier consideration at the outset.
Dark Horses
Don’t count the good doctor out of making a serious splash in this competition. Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli), the handsome blonde leader of the coven, is one of the most refined and well-respected in the entire “Twilight” world, and if Facinelli brings even a fraction of his massive Twitter following into the fold, he’s quickly going to become the one to beat.
Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy), too, stands a shot at sneaking into the top spot. First of all, she’s the unlikely lovechild of one epic romance, and secondly, she’s an enigma for the ages. The world hardly knows what to make of the little girl, except nearly everyone falls in love with her at first contact. (Wouldn’t you? She’s so darn cute!) We’ll see if her mystery and the fanbase’s excitement over finally seeing her in action rings true with the vote.
And let’s not forget about little Bree Tanner (Jodelle Ferland). Sure, her movie close-ups were few and far between in just one installment (“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”) but Stephenie Meyer did devote an entire spin-off book to the girl. Through “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella” fans got to experience an entirely different side to the story we’d already known and step into the thirsty mind of a surprisingly intriguing new vampire. And perhaps Bree’s success here would point Summit in the direction of future “Twilight” movies.
Go vote in the “Twi-Fight Saga Tournament” at MTV here and be sure to check out more on the match-ups over at NextMovie here.
