Lionsgate Television has optioned the R.F. Kuang novel “Yellowface” with plans to develop it as a scripted series, Variety has learned exclusively.

Karyn Kusama is onboard to direct and executive produce the potential series. Captivate Entertainment, known for the Jason Bourne film franchise, and Constance Wu and Justine Suzanne Jones of Tempo Wubato Productions are also set to produce, with Ben Smith of Captivate executive producing. Adam Docksey, vice president of development at Captivate, is helping to oversee the project for the company. No writer is currently attached.

Ryan Murphy is back at it with another installation of his “American Story” franchise. The long-awaited “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” centers on the rise and fall of former NFL star Aaron Hernandez.

Supermassive’s hit video game Until Dawn is headed to the big screen with a horror movie adaptation from director David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle Creation, Shazam), and The Hollywood Reporter brings us the latest casting news this week. For starters, Peter Stormare will be reprising his role from the Until Dawn video game!

THR notes, “Insiders say that in a callback to the game, Stormare is reprising his role of therapist Dr. Hill.” Additionally, Maia Mitchell and Belmont Cameli have signed on.

AMC Networks announced that their horror anthology series The Terror will get a third season. Season three will consist of six episodes, which will debut on AMC and AMC+ in 2025.

The Terror: Devil in Silver is based on Victor Lavalle’s hit horror novel The Devil in Silver. Lavalle himself is co-executive producing and co-writing the series with Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire), and Karyn Kusama will direct the first two episodes, as well as co-executive produce. Kusama also directed Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation and two episodes of Showtime’s horror series Yellowjackets.

Also executive producing is Dan Stevens, who plays the lead role of Pepper. Pepper is an everyday working-class guy who is mistakenly committed to a mental institution called New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital, which is filled with “the people society would rather forget.”

Wes Craven solidified himself as a master of horror with "A Nightmare on Elm Street," a slasher with an ingenious hook: the killer targets teens in their dreams.

It’s been just a few hours since Nathalie Emmanuel has seen Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis for the first time, and she’s settling on the right words to describe the experience.

“It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen,” says the actress, talking over Zoom from London in late April, as she pauses for a second to collect her thoughts.

Coppola’s epic, which will have its red carpet world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, casts Emmanuel in a starring role opposite a stacked ensemble that includes Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Fishburne and Jason Schwartzman. “The movie feels like a real call to arms,” she says. “It asks big questions. In spite of all the horrible, hard and devastating realities of the world that we live in, how can we make it better? It feels like there’s hope or a possibility for something better.

Director Karyn Kusama has talked about her aborted Dracula movie at Blumhouse, claiming the film’s critical take on men was too much for the studio.

Go back three years or so and we were awash with projects based on Dracula. There was Last Voyage Of The Demeter, Renfield, Chloe Zao’s sci-fi vampire Western and Karyn Kusama’s Blumhouse project, all of which were set to offer varying takes on the Prince of Darkness.

As is often the case in Hollywood when lots of similar(ish) projects bubble up at the same time, not all of them made it into production. We did get Last Voyage Of The Demeter and Renfield (although the former never got a theatrical release in the UK) but some other projects have yet to materialise: Chloe Zhao ended up working on Hamnet, her take on Shakespeare and his wife dealing with the loss of their young son.

This past weekend was, without a doubt, one that several studios and pretty much every movie theater around the country (and much of the world for that matter) would like to forget. Several new releases hit theaters, including Guy Ritchie's "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," as well as Crunchroll's latest anime film, "Spy x Family Code: White." It was, however, Universal Pictures' horror/comedy "Abigail" that was the most high-profile release of the bunch. While the film did perform better than the other debuts, it fell well short of expectations and further cemented a point that has been quietly lingering for some time: Vampires are not generally good for business these days.

"Abigail" opened to just $10.2 million, coming in second place over the weekend to Alex Garland's "Civil War," which pulled in $11.1 million in its second frame. Overall, it was one of the worst weekends at the box office in 2024 to date.

American Psycho (2000) – Directed by Mary Harron: Based on the controversial novel by Bret Easton Ellis, “American Psycho” is a satirical horror film that delves into the mind of a wealthy investment banker with psychopathic tendencies. Mary Harron’s direction infuses the film with dark humour and unsettling tension. Near Dark (1987) – Directed by Kathryn Bigelow: Kathryn Bigelow’s stylish and unconventional take on the vampire genre is a cult classic.

Exclusive: Writer, director, and producer Jessica M. Thompson has signed with Verve for representation.

She directed the Screen Gems vampire movie The Invitation, which was made for $10M, grossed $38M worldwide and was profitable for Sony. That pic starred Nathalie Emmanuel and Thomas Doherty, and debuted at #1 at the box office in late August 2022 and #2 when it hit Netflix.

Thompson is currently writing Pharmaka, an original sci-fi thriller series for TriStar Television. She is also developing a period-drama with Maven Pictures about Dr. James Barry, a trailblazing surgeon who was erased from history.

Previously, her feature debut The Light of the Moon premiered and won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at SXSW. The film stars Stephanie Beatriz and heralds a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. She also was the lead director on the critically-acclaimed Showtime/Sky series, The End, produced by the Academy Award-winning See-Saw Films.

AMC has renewed its supernatural anthology series The Terror for season 3 – and this time, we’re heading for a possibly haunted psychiatric hospital. Jolly.

The first two series of The Terror are spine-chilling, superbly creepy thrillers, and it’s with great pleasure that we’re able to report that the show’s returning with another hair-raising story.

Deadline reports that The Terror has been renewed for season three by AMC, with the new series will based on Victor Lavalle’s novel The Devil in Silver. Lavalle will also write the new series of The Terror with Chris Cantwell.

If the name Lavalle rings a bell, that would be for a good reason. His novel The Changeling was recently adapted into a compelling, thrilling AppleTV+ series of the same name, starring Lakeith Stanfield.

The Devil In Silver follows a man named Pepper, who finds himself committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital.

'Historical horror' is not a term that's been especially popularized, but it's most effective when describing the delicious combination of historical events and fictional horror. This subgenre has been quietly enjoying a great run during the last decade or so: not only have there been several movies that brilliantly mix detail-heavy period settings with creepy goings-on but there have been a number of TV shows delving into historical horror with much success, such as Showtime's "Penny Dreadful."

Latest on the scene is AMC's "The Terror," a series that so far has been able to vary its period setting, themes, and even tone thanks to being anthologized season to season. After the first season, which was based on author Dan Simmons' novel "The Terror" (hence the series' name), the second season went on to tell an original tale set in and around the Japanese internment camps in America during WWII.

2024 Sundance marks something of a milestone in the documentary space for XYZ Films, best known for championing global genre fare like The Raid, Mandy, and The Invitation.

On Thursday opening night the Los Angeles-based company premieres two documentaries which it produced or executive produced. After years of relatively random engagement in the non-scripted format, producing the likes of Don Argott and Sheena M. Joyce’s Framing John DeLorean (2019) and Marq Evans’s 2021 Tribeca premiere Claydream (2022), the documentary division led by Tamir Ardon is in full flow, with multiple projects in the pipeline.

Now we’ll have to wait and see if that actually does turn out to be his next feature, because The Hollywood Reporter has just broken the news that Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn! David F. Sandberg, known for “Annabelle: Creation,” “Shazam!” and “Lights Out,” will direct the film adaptation of the PlayStation horror video game “Until Dawn” by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.

“It: Chapter Two” and “The Nun” screenwriter Gary Dauberman is doing the most recent pass on a script from “The Invitation” writer Blair Butler. The plot for the film is under wraps but is said to be an “R-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre.”

The PlayStation video game centers on eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat — only to discover they are not alone. They must navigate dread and fear to make it through the night in one piece. The video game, which starred Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere in motion-capture versions, was named in Variety’s 2021 list of games that deserve movie adaptations.

After making one of the most refreshing DC superhero movies in years, and also one of the worst, David F. Sandberg is finally returning to his horror roots. Unsurprisingly for IP-obsessed Hollywood, Sandberg's return is not with an original horror story, but with an adaptation of a popular title — a video game, to be exact.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sandberg has signed up to direct an adaptation of "Until Dawn," the PlayStation horror game, for Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions. The script was originally written by Blair Butler (who previously wrote the underwhelming vampire flick "The Invitation"), but "Annabelle: Creation" writer Gary Dauberman is reportedly giving the script another pass.

Though specifics on this adaptation are scarce, Screen Gems is reportedly describing the film version as an "R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast."

"Until Dawn" was first released in 2015 for the PlayStation 4 as an interactive horror game.

Gary Dauberman, the screenwriter behind hit horror franchises It, Annabelle and The Nun, is doing a pass on the a script originally written by Blair Butler, who previously wrote Sony’s vampire thriller, The Invitation.

Dauberman, who late last year signed a first-look deal with Screen Gems and Sony to deliver horror movies, is producing Until Dawn under his Coin Operated banner. Also producing are Sandberg and Lotta Losten via their Mangata shingle, as well as Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

Screen Gems horror movie Horrorscope had been set for theatrical release on June 28, 2024, a prime summer slot, but we’ve learned this week that Sony has re-dated the movie.

Horrorscope will now release in theaters on May 10, 2024.

Why the move? It may have something to do with the fact that A Quiet Place: Day One is currently dated for theatrical release on June 28, moving into that new date just last month.

Jacob Batalon (“Reginald the Vampire”), Alana Boden (The Invitation), Adain Bradley (Wrong Turn: The Foundation) and Avantika (Senior Year) will star alongside Humberly González (Nobody), Wolfgang Novogratz (Assassination Nation), Larsen Thompson (“The Midnight Club”), Harriet Slater (“Pennyworth”) and Olwen Fouéré (Mandy).

Anna Halberg and Spenser Cohen (Moonfall) wrote the script and will direct the movie.

Sony’s Screen Gems, behind recent horror movies including Insidious: The Red Door, The Pope’s Exorcist and The Invitation, is looking to make an even bigger mark on the horror space, The Hollywood Reporter informs us tonight. On that note, they’ve signed Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) to a first-look deal for the purposes of developing feature films in the genre.

THR notes, “The move comes as Sony seeks to rebuild Screen Gems, its division focused on lower-budgeted fare, into a more productive label, with horror being a top focus.”

As part of the deal, Gary Dauberman is said to be “creating projects for himself,” while also “curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

A new study released by USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative covering the top films from 2007 to 2022 has found that Hispanic/Latino representation both in front of the camera and behind has not improved in 16 years. And even when the community lands prominent roles, they’re usually stereotyped as immigrants or as having low income.

The initiative’s study, released Monday, examined 1,600 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2022 and more than 62,000 speaking characters. It found that there was not one year during that span that all film distributors released at least one movie with a Latino or Hispanic lead/co-lead.

Four of the seven biggest distributors had fewer than 10 films in 16 years with a Hispanic/Latino lead. Warner Bros had had worst record among the studios, per the study, with only three movies featuring a Hispanic/Latino lead or co-lead in the 16-year time frame.

SpectreVision, the production company behind horror films Mandy and Daniel Isn’t Real, and co-founders Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah have teamed up with streaming platform Pluto TV for a special Halloween treat: a horror movie marathon streaming event.

Wood and Noah are bringing their favorite horror and psychological films for Pluto TV viewers to enjoy for Free on Wednesday, October 18 on the Pluto TV Cult Films channel.

Earlier this year, it was announced that New Line Cinema had come out the winner in a bidding war over the haunted house project Occupant, which would be based on a 39-page short story by new writer Victor Sweetser. Now that the writers strike has come to an end, The Hollywood Reporter has discovered that New Line Cinema and producer Zach Cregger, the writer/director of last year’s Barbarian (watch it Here), have found the writer who will flesh Sweetser’s story out into a screenplay: Blair Butler, a former writer and on-air personality for shows like Attack of the Show who has gone on to work on several genre films. Her previous writing credits include The Invitation (the vampire movie that starred Nathalie Emmanuel), Polaroid, and Hell Fest. Butler was also a producer on the Marvel-inspired TV series Helstrom.

The Occupant purchase was part of Cregger’s year-long winning streak.

Earlier this year, New Line Cinema acquired the rights to a short horror story titled The Occupant, and THR reports today that Blair Butler has been hired to write the script. Previously announced, Zach Cregger (Barbarian) will produce the film.

Running just 39 pages long, the original horror story was written by Victor Sweetser.

THR notes, “New Line is keeping the logline of the take in the basement, but story is a spin on the traditional haunted house tale in which a family moves into a spooky home. In this case, when a mysterious, old house is moved to a small town, something sinister arrives with it.”

Roy Lee and Scott Glassgold will produce the film adaptation alongside Cregger.
