Grillo always make the B grade action movies looks better.. Yeah it's a cliche story but enough to you chill n relax in 90min..a little bit harsh if lower than 4/10... The careography of the action, the locations of the movie.. the camera.
Hounds of War" is a gritty action film that focuses on mercenaries involved in a conflict in a fictional country. The story delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the moral complexities of war. It showcases intense action sequences and character-driven narratives, exploring the personal motivations of those who fight for profit rather than patriotism. The film is noted for its realistic portrayal of combat and the psychological impact of warfare on the characters.

This is a bog standard B movie actioner with a surprisingly good cast. It is also pretty dark at times and cynical about politicians. The fight scenes are pretty good and the supporting cast is packed with minor martial artists from round the world.
Frank Grillo is always good value and Robert Patrick reprises his bad guy role from Season 3 of Reacher. He really does a good slime ball!
It clocks in at 90 minutes and is set in Malta which makes a change, although Accident man 2 was also filmed there so maybe they offer tax breaks. The only thing it lacks is Scott Adkins doing his terrible American accent to make it the perfect Friday night no brainer!

Wow. Every cliche under the sun -- times 10 -- and multiple plot holes large enough to hold the Titanic. I thought Frank Grillo could act (what was that movie again?)...but after seeing this I may have been wrong. And Rhona Mitra -- sweet sexy Rhona Mitra -- she should fire her agent. Stunningly bad.
It's not even worth detailing the many specific shortfalls, cuz they're all terrible. If you watch this -- and I don;t recommend that you do -- keep your finger poised on the fast-forward button. You'll be scrubbing forward looking for a redeeming scene...but you won't find one. Not even one.
You have been warned.

I think I'm being generous with this rating. Hounds Of War the latest film from prominent DTV director Issac Florentine and the second Grillo film of the year so far following Lights Out, is derivative, poorly paced and worst of all boring.
Robert Patrick can play roles like this in his sleep at this point. Same could be said for Rhona Mitra. Mitra and Grillo are supposed to play an ex couple here but without this movie telling you that you likely wouldn't know, since they have virtually no chemistry at all in their scenes together. Grillo even though he's the lead barely has any screen time or lines of dialogue for some odd reason. The action scenes feel drawn out and like pure visual noise to draw out the runtime and make up for the fact that this movie barely has a story.
Grillo has another movie, Long Gone Heroes also releasing this week. Hopefully it's better than this.

I walked into 'Hounds of War' expecting an adrenaline-fueled action ride, but what I got was a cringeworthy, poorly executed disaster. The 'acting' was laughable, with wooden spoon performances from the entire cast. The dialogue was stilted and clichéd, making it hard to take anything seriously.
But the real tragedy was the action scenes. Clunky choreography, awkward editing, and ridiculous plot. Made it feel like a bad parody of a Michael Bay film. The 'intense' set pieces were predictable and lacked any real tension.
The plot was convoluted and riddled with holes, making it impossible to become invested.
Avoid 'Hounds of War' at all costs unless you're in the mood for a hilariously bad action film. Even then, it's a stretch."
Rating Breakdown:

Underwhelming & boring right from start. Bad editing & audio effect; Most of the film sounded muffled with certain parts jumping up and down. The film is obviously another independent low budget relying on a couple B-list actors in order to help sell it. All the rest of the "actors" are just D-list nobodies with cringing acting. The first scene is just unrealistic..... the President would have more than just a handful of secret service visibly around. I just saw Gillo in another film that got released same day "Long Gone Heroes" which was slightly better; ratings between the 2 films proves it.
First let me say that I'm a fan of Grillo - he always holds his own and never needs cast direction, thus why even newb/terrible directors seek him out as he makes them look good. However, that also means he'll keep doing B movies, and I feel he deserves better than that, as he's been in a few of my top B films.
Yesterday I saw him in Long Gone Heroes and I was really disappointed in that movie. It was very slow and the long 2 hour runtime dragged on and felt much longer in a cliched storyline that was rather dull and boring. I rated that movie a generous 4/10.
Today I saw Hounds of War, and I enjoyed it much more. Sure it's not a perfect film, and there certainly were many plot and technical issues, bad editing, and the directing had some flaws, BUT the storyline kept me engaged (and sort of unique and not riddled with the typical cliches), and had excellent pacing and non stop action and suspense. The 95 min runtime flew by almost too fast. Even the action scenes (although not perfect) were much better than yesterday's movie. Plus the set/location shoots were beautiful, and I've never seen Malta as beautifully as it was shown in this movie. So from an eye-candy perspective, this movie was amazing, not to mention the beautiful and lovely Rhona Mitra was very easy on the eyes. Plus the soundtrack theme song at the end (Vladtoseeu - Nosence, you're welcome) was amazing, and I've already added it to my playlist.
So this movie had lot's going for it, and undeserving of all the current 1-3/10's from the wannabe critics. Go see Long Gone Heroes, that once certainly deserves those low scores. This is a very well done B movie and deserving of the 7/10 from me.

This isn't a bad film, but it's also not a good film. I don't really understand, as Issac has made a whole heap of fantastic movies. Ninja 2, Undisputed 2 etc, with this movie having scenes that go on for far too long.
The movie could easily drop 30 minutes and tell the exact same story. Scene for scene. The big fight scene in the middle ish of the movie.. sped up far too much. The pacing is off.
Again, it's not a bad film, but it's never going to be a great film. Shame. Frank and Rhona rock, as always, but that's not enough to save the movie. The camerawork is fantastic, great colour grading and the story isn't bad. Oh well. Next.

While the film is long winded in the exposition of locales at times, I think it's a solid B action movie. I'm not sure why anyone would call it trash as it's better than 90% of the stuff being made today. It has a solid cast, and the acting is on par with a film of its caliber, if not better. The action is well done and if it had any real fault, I would say it's the editing. There is a little too much filler to seemingly pad the runtime and I'm not a fan of starting a movie with a scene and then travelling back in time to see how the protagonist got to this point. It never works. I didn't like it in John Wick and I don't like it anywhere else. It's basically a movie spoiler shown up front.
Hollywood should stop being scared of making shorter movies. I would easily accept a 75-minute B movie with good pacing that kept you in the meat of the story.
Overall, this movie was enjoyable, and I watched it all the way through, which is more than I can say for a lot of other movies recently.

Despite the stale beginning and above average combat/action, the film has a unique storyline. There are some parts of the film that have some ups and downs, but mostly ups since Frank Grillo performed beautifully in some scenes during the film, whereas there are some characters that really need atleast a storyline for us to get a grasp of their presence.
I would have preferred the dialogues to be a little more enticing and fresh, but unfortunately some aren't that fresh. The overall pacing of the film is quite uneven, with some scenes dragging on while others feel rushed. This inconsistency can make it difficult for viewers to stay fully engaged throughout the entire movie.
However, the action sequences do provide some much-needed excitement and help to keep the momentum going. However, there are some scenes that are really entertaining and the action sequences are thrilling. All in all, the film is an enjoyable experience..

Everything looks low budget and low effort. They hired anyone that looks remotely muscular to play dress up military. Proceeded to do a night raid with no night vision. For a movie about a "military" guy, they looked like a bunch of hasbeens wearing any tactical gear they can find on amazon that fit the budget. On top that, they got all the dudes lined up with all of them checking the same angles like it wasn't already checked. To think the president would have more security. The attempt to make deaths all dramatic was so cringe. We got dudes swinging the rifle around blind firing and the gun muzzle flare effects looks like some brandonjla's muzzle flare effect from 14 years ago.
Patrick is well past his sell by date , that's a given . Grillo , on the other hand , has had multiple opportunities to push himself on , but he keeps pumping out the B list garbage ?
The Butler movie " Copshop " was right up his street and he excelled in the part . Now he is turning into the poor man's Bruce Willis as his career should be pushing beyond that garbage ? So , message to Frank look for material that suits your obvious talents and find another agent , because he only appears to be in this relationship to suit himself . Remember Warrior Frank ? It seems like the dim and distant past ?

I had high hopes for this film, especially since it starred Frank Grillo, who is usually captivating in his roles. However, even the first 10 minutes were a struggle. Right from the beginning, the scenes felt dull and lifeless, lacking any engaging dialogue or compelling visuals. The production quality seemed cheap, making it difficult to immerse myself in the story. As the minutes dragged on, I found myself increasingly disengaged. By the 20-minute mark, it became painfully clear that this film just wasn't going to captivate me. Instead of pulling me in, it left me feeling frustrated and bored. It's disappointing when a movie fails to deliver on its potential right from the start.

Bad acting, bad effects, bad filming, bad editing, bad sound , bad story line. It was like reliving "land of the lost" from the 80's. Seriously how did this film make it into a film can? Does this contain spoilers? Really? A full scale nuclear war would be better than this! At least it would be over faster! I've wasted money before and I was able to get over it pretty quick, but this investment will continue to haunt me till I die. My ancestors will probably talk about me as the uncle that bought that movie, you know "Hounds of War"!!! The cheesiness of this one could only be described as Lindburger that was forgotten in an old gym sock for a hundred years! I'm sorry I got caught up in my review....... Take a chance I dare you!
Frank Grillo delivers yet another stellar performance in this film, proving once again that he's a force to be reckoned with. The movie is fantastic, and his presence elevates every scene he's in.
One of my only regrets is that we didn't get to see more of the hounds before they were taken out of the story. A bit more time with them would have added an extra layer to the tension.
The cast is filled with exceptional talent, including some standout British action stars, which was a real treat. The fight scenes, while a bit too fast-paced for my taste, were still impressively choreographed and executed by these top-notch actors.
The stunning Malta backdrop adds a unique and picturesque element to the film, making it visually striking from start to finish.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and would highly recommend it to anyone. The ending ties everything together beautifully, but I'll leave the details for you to discover. Trust me, this is one movie you won't want to miss.
