Prime Video will explore the realm of near-death experiences in its latest drama project.
The Amazon-owned streamer is developing a thriller called The Orpheus Project, centering on a group of young doctors who conduct dangerous experiments on themselves that skirt the line between life and death. The project, from writers Dee Johnson (Fellow Travelers) and Paul Keables (Nashville), is based on an Israeli series titled Metim Lerega that ran on that country’s Hot platform.
Johnson and Keables will executive produce with Jack Tar Pictures’ Marc Resteghini (Prime Video’s upcoming Young Sherlock) and Paper Plane Productions’ Alon Aranya (Your Honor, Tehran). Amazon MGM Studios is producing.
The Orpheus Project will center on “a group of young doctors saving lives by day and conducting dangerous experiments on themselves at night,” the show’s logline reads. “While these experiments are helping them solve complex medical cases, they come at a dark cost,...

Is there another modern horror movie as influential and enduringly terrifying as The Exorcist?
Some might make a case for the atmospheric chill of works that preceded it, like Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby or Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now. Others perhaps will point to subsequent hits — the brutal shocks of John Carpenter’s Halloween, for instance, or the mercilessly ratcheted suspense of Ridley Scott’s Alien.
But few, if any, horror films have left such an indelible impression, not only on the genre but on broader popular culture, as the 1973 demonic possession thriller that marked the peak of director William Friedkin’s long career.
Two years earlier, Friedkin, who died Monday at his home in Los Angeles, aged 87, had already reinvented the police procedural with The French Connection, a bristling neo-noir that to this day has few equals in its hurtling car-chase action, its viscerally immersive camerawork, its...

Exclusive: Bess Rous will round out the cast of Chris McKay’s Universal monster movie, Renfield.
She joins an ensemble that includes Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina, Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez and Shohreh Aghdashloo, as previously announced.
The film based on an original story outline by Robert Kirkman centers on Renfield (Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).
Bess will play Caitlyn, a member of a support group for people in toxic relationships.
Ryan Ridley penned the script. McKay is producing the film shooting in New Orleans with Skybound Entertainment’s film team, including Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst and Sean Furst, with his producing partner Samantha Nisenboim exec producing.

Emmy Award-winning hair department head Araxi Lindsey has worked as Regina King’s personal stylist for years after the two crossed paths on the set of “Southland.” But despite frequent attempts to connect on another project, Lindsey was always too busy with her responsibilities on “Black-ish,” the hit ABC comedy that won her recognition from the Television Academy, to collaborate with King again. So when Lindsey got a call from famed producer James Lassiter (numerous Will Smith films including “Ali” and the forthcoming “King Richard”) to join the new Netflix film “The Harder They Fall” starring King as a villainous outlaw, she jumped at the chance.
“We’ve never seen Miss King in this role,” Lindsey tells Gold Derby about King’s character, “Treacherous” Trudy Smith, who serves as the right-hand of Rufus Buck (Idris Elba), the film’s main antagonist. “That was one of the main things I wanted for her.
