It began with 2008’s “Iron Man,” a film that introduced the world to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark with the hint that he could be part of something greater. Over 30 films later, the story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still being told, albeit with various tributaries and detours that introduce new characters and new worlds that may or may not cross paths one day. Each film in the MCU stands on its own to some degree, but like building blocks, they all connect as part of one interconnected universe. And in that way, watching the Marvel movies in order tells one grand story.

Superhero movies produced by Marvel Studios have been among the biggest tentpole blockbusters in Hollywood for years. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely become ubiquitous with the superhero genre, with its projects often featuring the biggest names in entertainment in various starring roles. With their global reach, Marvel movies can provide their actors with the largest possible audience as far as modern cinema goes. However, not every actor has readily accepted the opportunity to join Marvel films, even for the most prominent parts in the MCU.

Whether due to not particularly connecting with the material or matters outside of their control, numerous A-list actors have turned down Marvel movie roles. Shane Black's 2016 neo-noir buddy comedy "The Nice Guys" has become something of a cult classic, despite being less than a decade old. You might think it's a bit premature to label Avengers: Doomsday as the most hotly-anticipated movie of 2026, but considering we're talking about an Avengers movie that will kick off the final chapters of the Multiverse Saga, I think that is a pretty fair assessment. Marvel Studios bring their A-Game when the Avengers get together, with all four previous installments of the subfranchise within the Marvel Cinematic Universe all surpassing $1 billion (two of them surpassed $2 billion). A fraction of that would be a huge win for any other franchise.

And Marvel really is pulling out all the stops to ensure that this one makes itself at home amongst the other Avengers movies. We'll not say that the franchise's best days are all behind it, but the MCU has struggled to make the current saga as seamless and must-see as the Infinity Saga, so you can bet they are committed to making...

Many characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are far different to their Marvel Comics counterparts, and, in some cases, this is a very good thing. Since the MCU kicked off with 2008's Iron Man almost 17 years ago, Marvel Studios has adapted dozens of notable characters from Marvel Comics into live-action, building a vibrant universe full of many complex and believable people. While many of these MCU characters are very comic-accurate, Marvel Studios has made huge changes to others, but this has often been for the best.

The likes of Steve Rogers' Captain America, Tony Stark's Iron Man and Loki, among many others, have always stayed very faithful to their depictions in Marvel Comics. However, because of the modern setting and realistic nature of the MCU and in the name of simplifying some convoluted backstories, Marvel Studios has altered many aspects of some notable Marvel Comics characters when bringing them into the MCU.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has done a great job with major villains from the comics and obscure foes, with some of them rising to a level of their own, striking fear into the hearts of some of the franchise's best heroes. Sadly, many of the McU's best villains have come and gone. The franchise does have a problem of killing evil characters in their first appearance, which is something Marvel has continuously received criticism for.

However, that does not mean that the MCU does not know how to handle villains well. From Thanos to Loki and more, Marvel has focused on several different types of villains, with some being fully evil while others are more complex than that. The McU's upcoming movies will introduce some exciting villains, like Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom, and they could learn a lesson from the villains in the franchise who made even heroes fear them.

In the time since they last worked together, the two have put years on their respective careers, with Pearce adding titles like Iron Man 3 and Mary Queen of Scots to his filmography, while Jones put in career performances in The Theory of Everything and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

One look at Guy Pearce’s filmography and it’s clear the actor has largely stayed away from big Hollywood studio fare over the years. One would have to go all the way back to 2013’s Marvel movie “Iron Man 3” to find Pearce’s last sizable role in a studio tentpole, although he did have smaller appearances in “Prometheus” and “Bloodshot.”

Pearce has stayed busy over the years with indie dramas and international fare, which he recently told GQ magazine was somewhat of a reaction to the bad experiences he had with a few studio films. After the success of “Memento,” Hollywood tried and failed to mold Pearce into a studio leading man with projects like 2002’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Time Machine.” The latter film, loosely based on H. G. Wells’ novel of the same name, was a notorious critical flop and a pain for Pearce to make.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe scored a massive win with its Venom franchise with a total box office that beat three of the Avengers' in the MCU. Sony is reportedly halting production of its Spider-Man Universe movies after Kraven the Hunter landed poorly with critics, earning a paltry 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and earning just $26 million globally during its opening weekend. This is a far cry from the early days of Sony's Spider-Man Universe, where Venom raked in $856 million worldwide. The cancelation therefore stands to reason as Sony appears poised to cut its losses after a significant downward trend.

Venom's success can be largely attributed to the character's overall popularity with Marvel fans, with his star power being beaten only by Spider-Man himself and most (but not all) of the McU's charismatic cast. It's no surprise that Sony would lean into this popularity with two sequels, Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance.

Moana 2’s third-week box office success sets the course for Disney repeating a feat from 2019. Before completing its first month in theaters, the sequel already beat the first installment’s five-month worldwide grossing of $643 million. Moana 2’s new and returning cast is key in sparking a renewed interest in the franchise, as adding new characters has given a fresh perspective while expanding on familiar dynamics that made the original great. The demigod twist in Moana 2’s ending effectively sets up future installments, not to mention the confirmed live-action and possible sequels and TV shows about characters like Maui and Simea.

Despite Moana 2’s reviews being considerably worse than the first, its early box office numbers surpass the first movie by a lot, positioning it to become the studio’s favorite franchise in the years to come.
